Fever Dreams is a miniseries featuring works of fiction, essays and non-fiction read without embellishment or analysis. Literature was my first great artistic love, and I regard it as possibly the richest art form, with its ability to showcase the dark interior of humanity, and traverse time, place and space unlike any other medium. Fever Dreams features a selection of the macabre and the mundane, the fantastical and the concrete, works that have struck me in a meaningful fashion, and that I feel are worth sharing. Our sixth dream (and final for this season) is What is a podcast? by Anselm McGovern. In Episode 19, after an extended life update, I discuss the passing of manga-ka Kentaro Miura and the way that cultural reactions show the range of ways that people respond to such news (in some ways better than others). With this event as a heuristic for contemporary culture, I posit a different way of viewing artists - as people first, separate from their work, and irreducible to the sum total of their creations - and speak about the power and impact of Miura's Berserk series. In this special episode, I am joined by my sister Ebony who creates in a range of mediums from fashion design, collage, and film, and we discuss subjectivity in art, the power of raising questions without positing answers, and the magic of viewing art out in the real world. We touch on a range of film work, including Citizen Kane by Orson Welles, Memories of Murder and Parasite by Bong-Joon Ho and the work of Wong Kar Wai, as well as discussing the importance of curating your own taste, making your art your way, and the necessity for curiosity. In Episode 17 of The Mirror, I extol the virtues of a practice of reflection and lingering as part of a meaningful life, and a healthy approach to creating art. This extensive look at my own practice is a recap on the previous 6 months of changes in my life, from quitting social media and developing a healthier relationship to communication technology, as well as expanding my artistic horizons through watching films and reading fiction literature. I offer in this episode how all of this has informed my practice for the better, along with my view of what separates humans from mere animals, before sharing some insights from Frank Herbert's brilliant novel Dune.Support my work on Patreon - patreon.com/justinreidBecome a sustaining member, and support independent art and film for as little as $4 a month. The Mirror looks at cultural production through a critical and philosophical lens, emphasising the importance of historical understanding, deep reflection, and true situational awareness for developing higher levels of craftsmanship and discipline in artistic practice.Subscribe to my YouTube channel for full episodes and exclusive segments featuring original, meditative imagery: Justin Reid - YouTubeThe Mirror Theme is written, produced and performed by Annalisa Vetrugno, with drums contributed by Giacomo Greco. You can find their work here:Annalisa Vetrugno - Commissions | InstagramGiacomo Greco - InstagramView my portfolio, get in touch or enquire about commissions via my website: www.justinreid.com.au Hosted on Acast. Episode 16 of The Mirror is a special episode, one devoted entirely to discussing Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, a film from 2012 that is both a wonderfully crafted work of cinema, and a powerful lens through which to look at our highly-subjectivised times. The Master, in both cinematography and performance, exemplifies a rare restraint in Western cinema, and takes a beautifully naturalistic approach, finding more in common with the European arthouse than contemporary Hollywood cinema. This study is spoiler free, and goes into detail in the form and process of cinema.Support my work on Patreon - patreon.com/justinreidBecome a sustaining member, and support independent art and film for as little as $4 a month. In Episode 15 of The Mirror, I talk about the importance of taking risks as an artist, being prepared to fail, to do things that are unpopular, and to experiment - especially in the homogenised desert of our contemporary culture. I detail the 5 year-long making of David Lynch's debut feature film Eraserhead, and the long, lingering process of the painter Antonio López García, as well as discussing the impact of early silent cinemas innovators and the importance of sharing your work with others as a way of understanding what makes you unique in your process and final works.Support my work on Patreon - patreon.com/justinreidBecome a sustaining member, and support independent art and film for as little as $4 a month. The Mirror looks at cultural production through a critical and philosophical lens, emphasising the importance of historical understanding, deep reflection, and true situational awareness for developing higher levels of craftsmanship and discipline in artistic practice.Episode Links:David Lynch: Eraserhead Stories (Making of Documentary)Antonio López García (Painting)Stormzy - Wiley Flow (Music Video)Metropolis - Fritz Lang (1927) - Full MovieA Trip to the Moon - Georges Méliès (1902) - Full MovieAV Festival 12: Slow Cinema Discussion with Ben Rivers and Lav DiazSubscribe to my YouTube channel for full episodes and exclusive segments featuring original, meditative imagery: Justin Reid - YouTubeThe Mirror Theme is written, produced and performed by Annalisa Vetrugno, with drums contributed by Giacomo Greco. You can find their work here:Annalisa Vetrugno - Commissions | InstagramGiacomo Greco - InstagramView my portfolio, get in touch or enquire about commissions via my website: www.justinreid.com.au Hosted on Acast. This essay details the mental health suffering of the writer and cultural critic Mark Fisher, whose work has been incredibly influential over the past decade in left-wing thought, as well impacting the culture through his relationship with musicians and artists like The Caretaker and Burial. In Good For Nothing, Fisher ties his own experiences to the collective depression we all experience under contemporary capitalism, making the necessary connection that our mental health crises are political. This essay was published in 2014 via The Occupied Times. Tragically, Mark Fisher took his own life in 2017 after a lifetime of struggling with debilitating depression. His work remains as poignant and prescient as ever and his book Capitalist Realism is essential reading. On a very personal note, this essay describes nearly exactly the reality of my life as I have experienced it, so for this reason as well, Fisher's work is incredibly important to me.Support my work on Patreon - patreon.com/justinreidBecome a sustaining member, and support independent art and film for as little as $4 a month. The Mirror Theme is written, produced and performed by Annalisa Vetrugno, with drums contributed by Giacomo Greco. You can find their work here:Annalisa Vetrugno - Commissions | InstagramGiacomo Greco - InstagramView my portfolio, get in touch or enquire about commissions via my website: www.justinreid.com.au Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. From a small slice of paradise, in Episode 13 of The Mirror, I discuss my personal experience that led me to the path of becoming an artist, and pose the questions I feel one must ask themselves when determining if the art life is just a hobby, or a complete lifestyle choice. I get very philosophical, attempting to describe art and it's role for humanity, as well as the benefits of working with physical mediums, and the many various forms that cinema can take. I have shared in the episode links a selection of incredibly experimental, avant-garde, and revolutionary films from throughout film history, that I feel any artist would get a lot from. Following a free-form narrative thread centred around our seeking of pleasure and catharsis within entertainment, Episode 12 of The Mirror is the strongest manifesto yet of my beliefs about art, the current cultural and material conditions we find ourselves in, and the alternatives available to us. I speak about the political cooptation of art by commercial interests, and the way this limits our imagination of the forms that art can take, as well as how our lives have become completely mediated by the frictionless fantasies offered to us by the Internet. Touching on the film work of Bela Tarr and Michael Haneke, which form a counterpoint to the dominant commercial format and language of Hollywood Cinema, I return to the necessity of needing to develop your own craft, beyond the reach and influence of the monoculture.Support the project at www.justinreid.com.au/support.Become a sustaining member, and support independent art and film for as little as $40 a year. The Mirror looks at cultural production through a critical and philosophical lens, emphasising the importance of historical understanding, deep reflection, and true situational awareness for developing higher levels of craftsmanship and discipline in artistic practice.Episode Links:How TV Became Respectable Without Getting Better - Matt Christman (Current Affairs)Forward Left: An Interview with Matt Christman of Chapo Trap House - Lucy Schiller (Counterpunch)The Turin Horse - Bela Tarr (2011) - Complete FilmFunny Games - Michael Haneke (1997) - Complete FilmSubscribe to my YouTube channel for full episodes and exclusive segments featuring original, meditative imagery: Justin Reid - YouTubeBecome a sustaining member and support the creation of compelling works of art and film, while receiving a range of great benefits, including:Access to exclusive films, artworks and behind the scenes material on my Membership platform that you can't experience anywhere elseA 10% discount across my store, including all of the premium films I produce, andHigher tier subscribers even get free access to all of my premium films before anyone elseSign up now at www.justinreid.com.au/support.The Mirror Theme is written, produced and performed by Annalisa Vetrugno, with drums contributed by Giacomo Greco. You can find their work here:Annalisa Vetrugno - Commissions | InstagramGiacomo Greco - InstagramView my portfolio, get in touch or enquire about commissions via my website: www.justinreid.com.au Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. In this special episode, we look at the life, work and philosophy of Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. Tarkovsky and his films have been a major inspiration for me, and I share with you the story of his life, as well as exploring his philosophy on cinema as an art form through a series of speeches and writings taken from throughout his career. Tarkovsky viewed cinema as an art form that is as important to humanity as painting, poetry, music, and philosophy, and this is evident in his films as well as in the way he lived his life. We finish our Dosing Culture reading series with the second part of Chris Crawford's illuminating essay, which delves deeper into how contemporary modes of creative production are built around our psychotically-networked culture, as well as situating the historical role of art as that which points to universal truths and the possibility of a truly human world. As with the previous episode, I'd highly recommend you read both parts of the essay in full, linked below, and make some time to reflect upon how this relates to your own consumption habits and creative process. In Episode 9 of The Mirror, I share with you an essay by Chris Crawford about the way contemporary culture is produced and consumed in an endless stream of doses, and the psychological effects this has on us. I read the first part of this illuminating and fantastic essay in full, and then share my thoughts and reactions to it, going into detail how after first reading it I had a coming to god moment in regards to my own life, habits and experience of consuming culture. This work truly puts into words that which I have felt but could not articulate, so I'm excited to share it with you and I hope you get something from it as well. In Episode 8 of The Mirror, I ruminate on the double-edged sword of entertainment, touching upon the work of Sigmund Freud and his Pleasure Principle, and how this affects the way we both view and create contemporary works of art. One of the dangers of our entertainment-based culture is a watering down and limiting of our imagination, and the creations that are birthed from it. For the main portion of the episode, I then outline my approach to making space in your life for Intentional Art Experiences - how I've largely extricated myself from the endless streams of content in search of richer, more rewarding and challenging works both screen-based and in the material world that inform my own practice and imagination. Strap in for a massive episode - in Episode 7 I'm joined by my good friends Erick Flores and Jaden Joslin from the band Native Tongue, consummate gamers both, to delve even deeper into CD Projekt Red's 'Cyberpunk 2077'. We chat about the actual experience of playing the game from its earliest release, as well as discussing the production of it through the lens of the current gaming industry, which has a lot in common and shares a lot of the same problems as the mainstream film industry, and the cultural industries at large. We cover the game's strengths as a work, the challenges of birthing such a juggernaut into the current culture that is both trying to be an open world RPG and tell a compelling story, and opine for what we specifically look for in games and cinema that our hegemonic culture seems to completely lack. This was an exciting episode to record as we touch on a range of subjects relating to the production of contemporary art, including the film 'Parasite' by Bong Joon-Ho and its resonance with Western audiences, the shift in the gaming industry from strong storytelling and artistry to the games-as-a-service model that relies on DLC and has heralded the death of complete projects, as well as the impact of Japanese video game auteurs like Hidetaka Miyazaki and his 'Dark Souls' series, and Shinji Mikami and his horror series 'The Evil Within'.Check out Native Tongue's latest song and music video 'Buffering', directed by yours truly: Buffering - Music VideoSupport the project at www.justinreid.com.au/support.Become a sustaining member, and support independent art and film for as little as $40 a year. The Mirror looks at cultural production through a critical and philosophical lens, emphasising the importance of historical understanding, deep reflection, and true situational awareness for developing higher levels of craftsmanship and discipline in artistic practice.Episode Links:Buffering - Native Tongue (Music Video)Evolution of a Filipino Family - Lav Diaz (Available on MUBI)Il Maestro - Martin Scorsese (Essay)itch.io - Independent Video Game Platform/CommunityThe Engoodening of No Man's Sky - Internet Historian (Video Essay)Lars Von Trier Interview: The Burden from Donald DuckArtworks Mentioned:Video GamesCyberpunk 2077The Witcher 3Dark SoulsDemon SoulsMass EffectFable: Anniversary SeriesStar Wars Knights of the Old RepublicUntil DawnRed Dead Redemption 2Final Fantasy 7Resident Evil 1,2,3,4,6,7Resident Evil: Code VeronicaThe Evil WithinDOOM 3ANTHEMFortniteFight CrabThe AvengersDestiny 2Dead SpaceThe DarknessDante's InfernoAsura's WrathThe Last of UsSuper Meat BoyHollow KnightManeaterShenmue 3Mighty No. 9Assasin's CreedRainbow Six: SiegeFar CryHellblade: Senua's SacrificeCall of DutyDOOM EternalResident Evil 8: VillageFilms and Television SeriesEvolution of a Filipino Family - Lav DiazParasite - Bong Joon-HoThe Revenant - Alejandro González IñárrituMarriage Story - Noah BaumbachBreaking Bad + Better Call Saul - Vince GilliganStar Wars: Sequel Series - JJ Abrams, Rian JohnsonSpawn - Mark A.Z. In Episode 6 of The Mirror, I examine the role of the audience in contemporary art creation, through the lens of CD Projekt Red's behemoth video game 'Cyberpunk 2077' - and all the fallout of its release, failure to live up to the expectations of its marketing and PR, and how it won't be remembered as the flawed yet potentially brilliant work that it is. With the game as a starting off point, I explore the ways that we as artists also fall into similar traps as do giant companies when creating and promoting our work, and trap our with a deep fear of how our work will be perceived - leading to dishonest representations of our work. By trying to please everyone, we end up pleasing no one, and create work that is less impactful, less enjoyable and with less to say - so I hypothesise a way of viewing your work, through honesty, self-awareness and the ultimate way to respect your audience.Support the project at www.justinreid.com.au/support.Become a sustaining member, and support independent art and film for as little as $40 a year. The Mirror looks at cultural production through a critical and philosophical lens, emphasising the importance of historical understanding, deep reflection, and true situational awareness for developing higher levels of craftsmanship and discipline in artistic practice.Episode Links:David Bowie - Never play to the galleryCyberpunk 2077 - An open minded review - NeverKnowsBestGone Home - Video Game (Trailer)The Art of Editing and Suicide Squad - Folding IdeasStalker - Andrei Tarkovsky (Full Movie)Subscribe to my YouTube channel for full episodes and exclusive segments featuring original, meditative imagery: Justin Reid - YouTubeBecome a sustaining member and support the creation of compelling works of art and film, while receiving a range of great benefits, including:Access to exclusive films, artworks and behind the scenes material on my Membership platform that you can't experience anywhere elseA 10% discount across my store, including all of the premium films I produce, andHigher tier subscribers even get free access to all of my premium films before anyone elseSign up now at www.justinreid.com.au/support.The Mirror Theme is written, produced and performed by Annalisa Vetrugno, with drums contributed by Giacomo Greco. You can find their work here:Annalisa Vetrugno - Commissions | InstagramGiacomo Greco - InstagramView my portfolio, get in touch or enquire about commissions via my website: www.justinreid.com.au Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Recorded on an intimate rainy day in North Queensland, Episode 5 involves a freewheeling series of updates on current projects, musings on my plans for the future, as well as reflections on some films I viewed recently that resonated with me, including Gaspar Noé's 'Love', and Ridley Scott's 'Alien'. I touch on the masterful ways these films employ the artifice of cinema, both provocatively and subtly, as well as discussing the many different forms that cinema takes, from the maximalist Hollywood approach, to the slow and artful expressions of mundane stories. Why do our best ideas always seem to come at the unlikeliest of times? How can we tell which ideas are truly worth listening to? Whether we're in the shower, driving to work or in bed unable to sleep at 3am, how can we create a life where we can capture these ideas that strike? In Episode 4 of The Mirror, I talk about my own experiences with this, about fighting pragmatism with your emotional instincts, and how often an idea that has been gestating in my subconscious hits me, and takes me in a direction I did not expect. I offer suggestions on how we can create a life built around allowing ideas to come, and being able to tell which ideas feel worthwhile pursuing.Support the project at www.justinreid.com.au/support.Become a sustaining member, and support independent art and film for as little as $40 a year. The Mirror looks at cultural production through a critical and philosophical lens, emphasising the importance of historical understanding, deep reflection, and true situational awareness for developing higher levels of craftsmanship and discipline in artistic practice.Episode Links:David Lynch in Conversation - QAGOMADavid Lynch - The Art Life (Clip)Pollinate - Justin Reid (Artwork)This Jungian Life - Creative Depression (E19)Subscribe to my YouTube channel for full episodes and exclusive segments featuring original, meditative imagery: Justin Reid - YouTubeBecome a sustaining member and support the creation of compelling works of art and film, while receiving a range of great benefits, including:Access to exclusive films, artworks and behind the scenes material on my Membership platform that you can't experience anywhere elseA 10% discount across my store, including all of the premium films I produce, andHigher tier subscribers even get free access to all of my premium films before anyone elseSign up now at www.justinreid.com.au/support.The Mirror Theme is written, produced and performed by Annalisa Vetrugno, with drums contributed by Giacomo Greco. You can find their work here:Annalisa Vetrugno - Commissions | InstagramGiacomo Greco - InstagramView my portfolio, get in touch or enquire about commissions via my website: www.justinreid.com.au Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. In Episode 3 of The Mirror, I delve into the relationship between discipline and creative freedom in our artistic practice, highlighting the limits of “hard work” and hustle culture, and looking towards a healthier approach at developing your craft by following the threads that feel right to you. Importantly, I work towards uncovering what freedom even really means in our art production, and how near impossible it has become for creative freedom and commercial goals to be aligned. In Episode 2 of The Mirror, I discuss the ways in which social media and online content platforms have shaped the way we approach creating art, before we even put pen to paper or paint to canvas. I posit a new way forward, by disconnecting from the online space and finding more meaningful expressions and outlets for our art, through mastery and making time for boredom.Support the project at www.justinreid.com.au/support.For a limited time only, the first 20 people who sign up can save 10% with the promo code THEMIRROR at checkout. Welcome to Episode 1 of The Mirror - a meditative series of audio journals reflecting on the creation of contemporary art and cinema, hosted by filmmaker Justin Reid. In the first episode, I lay the foundations of the project, casting a look back at the year that was 2020, and the new path I've forged from its ashes. I discuss the commercialisation of art, the relationship between social media and my arts practice, and sketch out my vision for finding meaning not only in your creative work, but in your life beyond.Support the project at www.justinreid.com.au/support.For a limited time only, the first 20 people who sign up can save 10% with the promo code THEMIRROR at checkout.
