Philly music producer Brian McTear talks about working with artists such as Dr. Dog and the Dead Milkmen, praises the "best lyricist I've ever worked with" on a new Christmas project, and shares his earliest memories of Dave and the Hooters.
Producer and Remix Artist Carl Bahner teamed up with Semblance singer and guitarist Maeve Gorman to produce an amazing remix of the Half-Waif song “Every Animal” (originally recorded for Weathervane Music’s documentary video series Shaking Through in 2018). Their approach brings the song to a completely new place, while at the same time somehow providing a deeper appreciation for the original. Through Remix Access, Weathervane Music allows the supporting members of this unique non-profit community to download, remix and share the multitracks and mix-stems from Shaking Through recordings. This podcast episode with Bahner and Gorman marks the first installment in what will be an ongoing series in the Weathervane Podcast of conversations with exceptional remix artists. And here’s another little surprise… Carl Bahner himself will be curating and hosting these future conversations.
Dover-DE based band Hoochi Coochi is a four-piece group with Danielle (Brown Sug) Johnson on vocals, Fatz Hawkins on guitar, Chelsea Grant on drums, and Mark Reed on bass. Originally Danielle and Fatz got together at a few open mics just to have fun with some blues based songs as a change of pace from what they were each doing individually -- but they had so much fun and the crowd enjoyed it so much, they decided to make a real thing out of it. Thus, Hoochi Coochi was born out of $3 bottles of wine and songwriting sessions. The band is currently working on new music, planning to go into the studio this summer, and officially release their latest single, BBW, in July. You can listen to a preview of their original recording of BBW with Weathervane Music here.Listen to the interview with Danielle of Hoochi Coochi where she talks about some of her influences, how the band gets along, how the scenes in Dover and Wilmington compare to Philly, some of their favorite Philly & Delaware bands to watch live and hang out with, their fave venues to play and much more.
In the second part of the conversation Dan and Brian talk more about Philly and it's music, Weathervane Music, and get into Brian's approach and philosophies towards recording and working with bands. And, of course, some good ol' geeking out about bands like Fugazi and Dr. Dog, to name just a few.
Dan went to Miner Street Recordings to talk with owner/producer Brian McTear, and it went so well, it became a two-part episode. In Part 1, Dan and Brian talk about Brian’s early days in the Philly music scene, the rise and fall of trends/attitudes/bands/venues, opening his own studio, and forming the non-profit Weathervane Music in ‘09 amidst a failing economy. Enjoy an acceptable amount of name checking, nerding out on gear, and great stories about the people who were there at the right time along the way.

My guest today is Ryan Earnhardt, a video creator and studio owner who produces a YouTube show called Creative Sound Lab. It covers recording-focused topics and out-of-the-box topics such as DIY effects. He recently built a Pooper Time Cube (A delay made from 4 inch drainage pipe) and created a reverb out of a garden hose. Creative Sound Lab stresses fundamental recording techniques and capturing real sounds such as using re-amping during mixing or using echo chambers for vocals - even if that chamber is your living room! Ryan has also partnered in teaching with Brian McTear of Weathervane Music and author Eric Sarafin aka “Mixerman”. Ryan started Creative Sound Lab in 2013 because he saw a need for something different than computer screen videos that mostly covered mixing topics. He currently has over 37,000 subscribers and hosts over a dozen online courses at Creative Sound Lab.tv Hear more on Youtube If you love the podcast then please Leave a review on iTunes here Want to learn more about mixing? David Hartley’s project Nightlands is outstanding, though he’s probably best known as the bass player for The War on Drugs. Shaking Through fans will remember him for his roles in episodes with Torres, Steven A. Clark, and the 2009 pilot episode featuring BC Camplight. His career has had him working on his own music, as well as filling out roles in other peoples’ projects, not to mention a unique early recording experience he had with the late Andy Johns. After graduating from Drexel University’s Music Industry Program, Jon Low got his start as the first intern at Miner Street Recordings, the studio where we produce Shaking Through. Over the years he’s grown into quite a respectable young engineer and producer, working on projects with The National’s Aaron Dessner, not to mention producing records for bands like Restorations, The Menzingers, Carroll and many, many more. Kristin Thomson is a co-founder of the non-profit, The Future of Music Coalition, which among other things has conducted studies about how musicians earn revenue. Back in the 90s she played in the indie-band Tsunami, and co-ran the DC label Simple Machines, which put out records for Ida, and Dave Grohl’s Pocketwatch, plus they wrote and distributed “The Mechanic’s Guide“, a DIY handbook for independent labels that was way, way ahead of its time. Clap Your Hands is celebrating 10 years since the release of their first self-titled record, one that was quite ground-breaking for the fact that Alec managed to promote it through MYSPACE, selling hundreds of thousands of copies through a distribution deal he made directly with a major distributor. Since then, Alec’s produced many records, played countless shows, and found new love in playing house shows in peoples’ living rooms across the country. Fans of Shaking Through will remember our episode with Hop Along in Spring 2013. As the band’s front person, Frances is both relatable and enigmatic all at once. Since that episode released, they’ve signed a record deal with Saddle Creek Records and released the long awaited LP, “Painted Shut“. Fans of Shaking Through will remember Adam Granduciel as the curator and producer of the Purling Hiss Shaking Through episode, and as guest guitarist on the Torres Episode with Sharon Van Etten. To those of us here in the Philadelphia indie music scene, The War on Drugs have been a prime example of creative endurance. He’s stuck it out and with the enormously successful 2014 album Lost in the Dream, it’s now paying off.
