Half Waif, the indie-electronic-folk project led by Nandi Rose, returns to Montclair for a special homecoming show at Outpost in the Burbs on February 22nd. This marks the band's first full performance at the venue, following a mini-set at a “new bands” festival in 2016. Since then, Half Waif has released a string of acclaimed albums, including the latest, See You at the Maypole (2024). Ahead of the show, we spoke with Nandi Rose about the power of art, creativity, and nature in navigating life's challenges and transformations. Episode also features "Figurine" from the new album.
And now for something a little different. This is the first episode in what I hope will be an ongoing "subseries" of Meet Our Makers, called We Meet Again. Today, we talk (again) to Half Waif, aka Nandi Rose. In this series, I will be interviewing people a second time, only this time, we can cut through all the noise and background and introductions. Instead, we can get right to it. We (sort of) already know each other, so let's just dive in, right? We get to really dig into Nandi Rose's newest (startlingly personal) Half Waif record, my personal AOTY, See You At The Maypole. Content warning: This episode DOES contain some explicit language about miscarriages, so consider that before hitting play. I think this is actually a better conversation than the one we first had almost three years ago, and I'm so happy we got to do this. Thanks Nandi. And thank YOU for diving into this new venture with me. There will be more of these (and more regular episodes!) to come.
Will and David discuss the latest releases by Half Waif, Wild Pink, and Office Dog, plus multiple live reports and bonus songs.

In this episode, we get to meet Nandi Rose, who records music under the alias Half Waif. Under the Half Waif name, Nandi has been putting out albums for quite some time, including last year's excellent The Caretaker. This year, she has a new one, Mythopoetics, coming in July. In this chat, we discuss the new album, as well as her connection to nature and healing, her desire to demolish the line between "celebrity" and audience, as well as how good it feels when you allow yourself to be proud of your work. Please enjoy, and thank you for listening.

Hello Friends and welcome to EP 43 of BORP! Our show has settled comfortably into middle age by now. We are no longer sure of what is hip in music anymore or even what day it is really, although that may be quarantine related. Lots to cover in this episode, including why exactly Mickey has a case of Caribous in his fridge. Elsewhere, Tristan has let his hair grow out and let's just say its a good thing you can't see what it looks like. As we try out some beers (7:00) we learn where Modern Times Brewery gets it's name from and a selection from Deep Cove Brewing segues into learning about which countries produce the most beer hops. For our album pick (29:00) we listened to the early 2000s indie dance, disco electronica debut album from Metro Area. We spend some time discussing how their pioneering efforts helped pave the way for underground dance music as know it today. For our film pick (1:32:56) we watched, not Judge Dredd, but the 2012 reboot Dredd, in all of it's brutally efficient glory. In the discussion, Tristan accidentally admits to enjoying the original 1995 version and almost gets himself fired from the show, again. For New and Noteworthy (2:25:20) we check out new music from Deeper, Half Waif, Ariane Roy, and Nicolas Jaar. For Three questions for Tristan (2:50:27), we somehow end up extolling the virtues of a tire swing, but you'll have to listen to find out why. Find the show on Spotify, iTunes or on our website Midrange. You can also find all of the tracks we discuss on our EP43 playlist on Spotify or Apple Music. Thanks for listening mates!

Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer. For our second season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. Thanks to the powers of the internet, we got to catch up with musician and producer Nandi Rose aka Half Waif during our very first week of post modern pandemic panic. We talked about her new album The Caretaker and how she was inspired by the ideas of slowing down and the act of how to care for one’s self and the world around us, which is particularly poignant for our troubled times. Her love of bird watching and quiet observation is a lesson to us all to slow down and tune in while we have the chance. Thanks again for listening! On this prelude to a very special 200th episode, boice collects three of his favorite past episodes with music photographer Mel D. Cole and musicians Half Waif and Rue Snider. Episode 026: To label Mel D. Cole a music photographer seems too thin a description. Yes, he was dubbed as one of Complex magazine's 50 Greatest Music Photographers. Yes, he's the "house photographer" of The Roots crew and Questlove hailed him as his favorite contemporary photographer. And of course, his exquisite black and white photos perfectly capture the performances of artists like Lauryn Hill, Nas and Common. However, Mel is equally adept at travel, nightlife and street photography. His talent is as immense as his creative choices regardless of the setting or subject. To see for yourself, visit him at his website http:// www.meldcole.com or on the blog http://villageslum.com Episode 118: Isn't it the greatest gift when an artist shares their interior world through their chosen medium? An objective Nandi Rose Plunkett had decidedly been working towards through the experimental pop music of Half Waif. Half Waif is the solo project of the Brooklyn-based singer/ songwriter in which she eventually realized her intention with lyrics that have became more lucid and unguarded over the span of her recording career. The paring down of barriers to their core innocence. Since the 2011 inception of Half Waif, Nandi's released two EP's, two full-length albums and form/a, her stunning new EP consisting of six meditations that reflect on her childhood, relationships and the wages of bare honesty. [This episode includes "Frost Burn" and "Night Heat" from form/a in their entirety.] Visit Half Waif online: http://www.half-waif.com Episode 166: Indie singer-songwriter Rue Snider’s music is a feat of grit and perseverance. And while those are admirable traits, they might all be for nothing if they weren't backed up with a sheer talent for strong hooks. The Brooklyn-based musician’s third full-length album, City Living, is the evidence with its inspiration rooted in a New York story of struggles and a love for 80s rock. [This episode features “Don’t Lose Heart” and “Tripping on a Raft with Girls” from City Living in their entirety.] Visit Rue Snider online: https://www.musicbyrue.com boice is the host/producer of a brand new podcast. Producer and Remix Artist Carl Bahner teamed up with Semblance singer and guitarist Maeve Gorman to produce an amazing remix of the Half-Waif song “Every Animal” (originally recorded for Weathervane Music’s documentary video series Shaking Through in 2018). Their approach brings the song to a completely new place, while at the same time somehow providing a deeper appreciation for the original. Through Remix Access, Weathervane Music allows the supporting members of this unique non-profit community to download, remix and share the multitracks and mix-stems from Shaking Through recordings. This podcast episode with Bahner and Gorman marks the first installment in what will be an ongoing series in the Weathervane Podcast of conversations with exceptional remix artists. And here’s another little surprise… Carl Bahner himself will be curating and hosting these future conversations.
On Signal Flow, Loudon Stearns and Erin Barra listen to the Brooklyn trio’s cinematic “Lavender Burning” and unpack the track's use of broken beats and rhymes to create a disorienting effect. This episode was engineered by Darcy Davis.
The band's songs, stripped here to their essence, are particularly peaceful and calm — and sometimes chilling.
