While working in the studio and writing new music, Lucius started discussing the loops they get stuck in, the rabbit holes the mind goes down, and the voices (usually not their own) that reaffirm where they fall short. They leaned into that theme, but wanted the track to have drive and uplift us so they turned to their friend Adam Granduciel (The War on Drugs) to rev up the song “Old Tape.”

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of Lost In The Dream, The War On Drugs put together a special long-form episode of their Super High Quality Podcast to tell the behind-the-scenes story of how the record was made. Between sessions in Hoboken and North Carolina, Adam Granduciel worked regularly with engineer Jeff Zeigler in Philly adding “paint” to a collection of songs that would be widely hailed as the band's first masterpiece on its release in March 2014. As the band struggled against the repetition and inevitable distractions of working close to home with local friends and collaborators, as the recordings took shape, Adam  was simultaneously struggling with the unpredictability of his own mental health. In candid conversations with the key players, and using previously unheard early mixes and demos, we'll follow the work in progress from the first sessions in early 2013 through the late summer and early fall when the songs took their final form during mixing.  We'll also ride shotgun with Adam on his journey home from the mastering studio to the shoulder of I-95 in a fitting conclusion to the making of Lost In The Dream. “One of 2014's Truly great records. In January 2022, The War On Drugs kicked off a world tour in support of their latest album, I Don't Live Here Anymore.  At a time when there weren't a lot of bands on the road as pandemic restrictions eased, TWOD packed multiple road cases with PPE and Covid tests, and headed to Austin TX to begin a six week tour of the US.  After the 4th show, singer/guitarist Adam Granduciel tested positive for Covid, shows were cancelled, and the band and crew found themselves quarantined in North Little Rock AR, uncertain of the tour's fate.  However, with Adam back to full health, the tour resumed, and in spite of additional sicknesses and some very unforgiving winter weather, the band completed the first leg of the tour in Phoenix AZ 28 shows later.Host: Dominic EastGuests: Adam Granduciel, Dave Hartley, Robbie Bennett, Charlie Hall, Anthony LaMarca, Jon Natchez, Eliza Hardy-Jones, Craig McQuiston.Cameos: Josh Goldsmith, Jimmy Russo

For nearly two decades and across five albums, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/the-war-on-drugs-driving-music-for-the-american-dreamscape (The War on Drugs)' founder and frontman Adam Granduciel has narrated our complex modern lives while his band has scored our dreams. The captivating moods of their music, much like us, morph from dense melancholy to saturated, swirling madness and everywhere in between. Granduciel often layers his Springsteen-meets-Young proletariat prose atop a post-rock soundscape, but the heartbeat of their impressive, expansive live shows is their gear and how it is implemented. “I could play the whole tour with two or maybe three guitars—a https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/1958-gretsch-6136-white-falcon (White Falcon), Strat, and maybe a Jazzmaster—but I bring all these out just for fun,” he says with a laugh as he considers his trove of axes. So, let's have some fun already! Before a full evening of The War on Drugs' jams in support of 2021's I Don't Live Here Anymore, PG was invited to Nashville's historic http://ryman.com/ (Ryman Auditorium). We covered Granduciel's growing guitar collection, got the skinny on how Jerry Garcia's monstrous setup played into the bandleader's theatre rig, and we took in a cockpit view of his stompbox squadron full of tone ticklers, sizzlers, and wigglers. In addition, bassist David Hartley showed off a trio of Ps, an armada of Ampegs, and demo'd a fuzz that has ended his quest for razing tones. Over 5 days in March 2018, during a short break in the band's heavy touring schedule, Adam Granduciel took bassist Dave Hartley and multi-instrumentalist Anthony LaMarca to an Upstate New York studio.  Decamping to Outlier Studios with Philadelphia friend and engineer Nick Krill, the four quickly realized that the session was becoming more productive than a typical demo session.  With the added focus provided by the remote setting (immortalized on the cover of the new album I Don't Live Here Anymore), the sweet “engine room” of this stripped-down configuration of The War On Drugs, set the course for the development of Adam's next batch of songs.  In Part 1 of this season's SHQ Podcast, Adam, Dave, Anthony, and Nick discuss their time at Outlier and revisit the four songs that were uncovered as the 3-year journey to IDLHA began.Host: Dominic EastGuests:  Adam Granduciel, Dave Hartley, Robbie Bennett, Charlie Hall, Anthony LaMarca, Jon Natchez, Nick Krill

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Maia Stern | November 1, 2021 In their Tiny Desk (home) concert, The War On Drugs gather in their packed studio in Burbank, CA to let us in on the fun and intricate inner workings of their craft. After opening the show with “I Don't Live Here Anymore,” which shares the same title as their new album, frontman Adam Granduciel introduces the band and asks if anybody has a capo. Suddenly a very thoughtfully crafted tiny desk with drumsticks for legs (and topped with a tiny lamp too!) slowly lowers down into the space, delivering said capo. Granduciel smiles, and the group continues with three more tracks from the new record: “I Don't Wanna Wait,” “Old Skin,” and “Change.” Although the band's big sound is fit to fill an arena, we're lucky to get to hear it reverberating in this cozy setting. The War On Drugs' fifth album, released Oct. 29, presents new songs that feel familiar and true to their sound. Originally based in Philadelphia, PA, the band's members are now spread out across the country, but they came together to jam, demo, and ultimately record this album as a kindred unit. The new songs are about reconnection, change, and uncertainty. This line from the title track resonates with me in the context of the daily unknown the pandemic has brought: “Time surrounds me like an ocean / My memories like waves / Is life just dying in slow motion / Or getting stronger everyday.” There's beautiful tension and a lot of joy in these classic ballads. Writer/Director Paul Harrill, along with several other crew members, leads a self-moderated Q&A following an opening weekend screening of their new film, LIGHT FROM LIGHT. Recorded live at Landmark's NuArt Theatre on 11/8/19. Single mother Sheila (Marin Ireland, “Sneaky Pete”) is gifted with sometimes-prophetic dreams and a lifelong interest in the paranormal, but her talent has not improved her life. She works in a dead-end job at a car rental agency and raises her teenage son Owen (Josh Wiggins), sometimes moonlighting as a paranormal investigator. When a priest seeks out her help, she reluctantly agrees to investigate a potential haunting at a Tennessee farmhouse. There she meets Richard (Jim Gaffigan, Them That Follow, Being Frank), a grieving recent widower who believes his wife may still be with him. Trying to bring him comfort, she carefully investigates the phenomena that are disturbing him, bringing in her son and his sweet classmate Lucy (Atheena Frizzell) to help. What they discover forces them all to confront the mysteries of their own lives. Light from Light is subtle and understated, yet casts a powerful atmospheric spell. Featuring original music by Adam Granduciel and Jon Natchez of The War on Drugs. Written and directed by Paul Harrill; executive produced by David Lowery (A Ghost Story).

We're at the end of The War on Drugs —- at least, until they release another album! (Which, god help us, should absolutely happen, but probably won't until like 2021 or so)  Anyway, here's their (for the moment) last album, A Deeper Understanding. The production's a bit thicker, the melodies are catchier but less desperate-sounding, and the flow of the album is better than the excellent Lost in the Dream. Is this a winner all the way through? We go through it song-by-song, so you'll be able to judge right along with us.Cosmic America is a podcast about music, hosted by Galen Clavio and Alex McCarthy. Feel free to hit us up on Twitter @doctorgc and @akmccarthy with ideas, suggestions, and questions.

We're back with more music talk. Cosmic America rolls on through the discography of The War on Drugs, tackling their breakthrough hit, Lost in the Dream for this episode. We take a look at the increasingly mature and almost gauzy production values, the increasingly isolated lyrical content, and the exciting yet somewhat uneven pacing of this 60-plus minute musical odyssey. You can contact us on Twitter at @akmccarthy or @doctorgc. Back for more Cosmic America, as we continue our deep-dive into The War on Drugs. This LP, entitled Slave Ambient, broke The War on Drugs more fully into the national consciousness, featuring many of the key characteristics that made their music so interesting and attractive to so many people. We cover it track-by-track, giving anecdotes and details for all of the songs.Be sure to subscribe to Cosmic America on iTunes, and give us a positive rating if you're feeling charitable. Alex and Galen are back, and this time we're reviewing the entire discography of The War on Drugs. This musical collective animates the lyrics and tunes of Adam Granduciel, and we start with our reviews at (almost) the beginning, with a look at 2008's Wagonwheel Blues. Kurt Vile is still in the band, and the whole enterprise sounds more Bob Dylan than Bruce Springsteen at this stage of things. As with all Cosmic America podcasts (at least, all since June of 2018!) we review the whole studio catalogue, album by album, track by track. So settle in and enjoy.

Shawn Everett Probably Recorded Your Favorite Album

Even if you don't know the name Shawn Everett, it's very likely that you've enjoyed an album that he's produced, engineered, or mixed in the past several years. In 2015, he rose to prominence for his work on Alabama Shakes' Sound + Color, possibly the best-sounding rock record of the decade, which garnered him two Grammys. Everett won his third Grammy earlier this year for The War On Drugs' A Deeper Understanding, an album he helped to construct with Adam Granduciel in some of the finest studios in Los Angeles and New York City.  Everett's resume doesn't stop there — his recent clients run the gamut of indie rock, pop, and country, including Grizzly Bear, John Legend, Perfume Genius, Kesha, The Killers, Hinds, Mike Gordon, The Voidz, and Kacey Musgraves. But no matter who he works with, Everett applies a personal aesthetic that melds the best of traditional recording techniques with big-eared adventurousness that always feels modern.  I invited Everett on the podcast to talk about his recent experiences in the studio, and to also help clarify the mysteries of record production. Fans love to talk about how records sound, do we really know what we're talking about? What exactly does a producer or engineer do, aside from simply pressing the "record" button and capturing what musicians perform naturally? Everett provides a lot of insight into his process, while speaking in terms that anyone can understand.

On Friday, The War On Drugs' released their fourth LP, A Deeper Understanding, and it's one of my favorite albums of the year. How did The War On Drugs get to this point, with a brilliant new LP that has many critics calling them America's next great band? I called up Dan DeLuca, long-time music critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, to talk about the band's career, its roots in Philly, and the formative influences on frontman Adam Granduciel. We also discuss whether A Deeper Understanding is even better than the band's 2014 breakthrough, Lost In The Dream. Sponsored by ZipRecruiter, Blue Apron and SeatGeek

Fans of Shaking Through will remember Adam Granduciel as the curator and producer of the Purling Hiss Shaking Through episode, and as guest guitarist on the Torres Episode with Sharon Van Etten. To those of us here in the Philadelphia indie music scene, The War on Drugs have been a prime example of creative endurance. He’s stuck it out and with the enormously successful 2014 album Lost in the Dream, it’s now paying off.
