BulletBoys exploded onto the scene in 1988 with their self-titled debut, produced by Ted Templeman (famed for his work with Van Halen and David Lee Roth). The album went gold, fueled by hits like “Smooth Up in Ya” and a blistering cover of The O'Jays' “For the Love of Money.” With comparisons to Van Halen swirling, it was no surprise when Marq eventually struck up a friendship with Eddie Van Halen himself — stories of which he shares with candor and admiration.Torien opens up not just about Eddie, but also his encounters with others like Dave Grohl, members of KISS, and many more. With nearly four decades in the music business, he remains fiercely independent, constantly evolving the band and touring .Beyond nostalgia, BulletBoys continue to bring new material and fresh energy to the stage — with Marq Torien's signature vocal firepower leading the charge.

This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store

In early 1990, Nirvana were ready to start working on their second album. Their label Sub Pop recommended a producer named Butch Vig, who had produced heavier underground bands like Laughing Hyenas and Killdozer. They met up with Butch at his Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin to begin recording, laying down eight tracks before they had to head out on tour for six weeks. When they returned home, they made the difficult decision to fire their drummer Chad Channing. Around the same time, Kurt and Krist were thinking of leaving Sub Pop, as the label was facing some financial trouble. When it came up that Sub Pop had begun talking to major labels about some kind of deal, Kurt and Krist felt they might be better off just signing directly to a major label. While in L.A. for label meetings they caught a gig by a punk band called Scream. Kurt and Krist were impressed with their drummer Dave Grohl and they kept in touch. When Scream broke up, not long after, they called up Dave to fly out to Seattle and jam with them. Within two minutes of playing, they knew Nirvana had found their new drummer. Gary Gersh at Geffen Records was one of the record executives looking to sign Nirvana. He had seen them play in New York with Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, who Gersh had signed to the label. Thanks to their encouragement, Geffen signed Nirvana to a deal on April 30, 1991. Nirvana managed to convince their new label that Butch Vig was still the best producer for the next album, and with a budget of $65,000, they headed to Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California to make it. This is the story of lead single Smells Like Teen Spirit, with newly unearthed audio from the band! Written by Cam Lindsay for iHeartRadio Canada.

In late May 1997, former Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl, embarked on a new phase of his career by releasing an album with a new band he called Foo Fighters. It proved to be a massive success and helped make the Foos one of the biggest bands in the world. Randy has the story behind that album on the latest edition of the Chronicles of Rock.
In this week's Mixtape Rewind, we revisit our new music mix from May of 2023. Durand Jones immediately transports listeners to the golden era of soul with vocals that would sound right at home on classic Stax Records. Meanwhile, Foo Fighters return from tragedy with "Rescued," a song that not only references the loss of Taylor Hawkins but features Dave Grohl returning to the drums in a powerful musical statement. Ww discover Kesha's transformation from pop princess to vocal powerhouse on the haunting "Eat the Acid" and celebrate Florence + the Machine's darkly hypnotic "Mermaids." Even established artists like Matchbox Twenty make a welcome return after a decade-long hiatus, proving their songwriting relevance hasn't diminished.Greta Van Fleet continues their masterful 1970s rock recreation, while The Linda Lindas bring Gen Z energy to punk traditions. Megan Maroney incorporates Instagram references into country music that would otherwise feel timeless, creating a perfect snapshot of music's ongoing evolution. The mix concludes with Joy Aladokun and Noah Cahan's deceptively upbeat "We're All Gonna Die," a song that uses mortality as a lens for gaining perspective—much like how this entire collection uses musical history as a foundation for creating something entirely new. Whether you're nostalgic for classic soul, 90s alternative, 70s rock, or early 2000s pop, this mix offers something familiar yet fresh that will become part of your regular rotation.https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/new-music-may-2023/pl.u-76oNlEbCvLa5bzJhttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/2ZUHQtGPVUPqTWfsaa9a7Q?si=edb2105b7ef047c31. Föstudagsgestur Mannlega þáttarins í þetta sinn var Karl Olgeirsson tónlistarmaður. Hann hóf nýlega störf sem organisti í Ástjarnarkirkju og þar stofnaði hann kirkjukór. Hann hefur samið tónlist nánast frá því hann fékk hljóðfæri fyrst í hendurnar. Við fórum með honum aftur í tímann á æskuslóðirnar í Hlíðunum, til Svíþjóðar og aftur heim og fórum svo á handahlaupum í gegnum lífið til dagins í dag. En hann er í nýju hlutverki á morgun þegar hann er aðalsöngvarinn í dagskrá þar sem flutt verða bestu lög Steely Dan og Donald Fagen í Hörpu. Í matarspjalli dagsins með Sigurlaugu Margréti héldum við svo áfram að skoða skrýtnar og óvenjulegar samsetningar á mat og fórum í gegnum nokkra tölvupósta frá hlustendum þess efnis. Og svo skoðuðum við hvort þessar breytingar í veðrinu hafi áhrif á matarval okkar. Tónlist í þættinum í dag: Smells Like Teen Spirit / Raggi Bjarna og Milljónamæringarnir (Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl og Krist Novoselic) Gríptu draum / Sigríður Eyrún Friðriksdóttir og Karl Olgeirsson (Karl Olgeirsson) I.G.Y. / Karl Olgeirsson og Reykjvik Tribute Orchestra (Donald Fagen) UMSJÓN GUÐRÚN GUNNARSDÓTTIR OG GUNNAR HANSSON

One of the most famous acoustic guitars in rock history – Kurt Cobain's Martin D-18E – will go on show at the Royal College of Music Museum in London as part of a landmark exhibition exploring Nirvana's groundbreaking MTV Unplugged performance. Opening on 3 June 2025, the Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition will be the first time Cobain's iconic guitar has been shown in the UK. Booking for Kurt Cobain Unplugged opens on Wednesday, 30 April. Visitors can join the waitlist to be among the first to know when tickets go on sale and receive updates and event highlights related to the exhibition. Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition delves into the musical legacy of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. It traces the remarkable journey of this iconic guitar, which became the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction in 2020 when it was bought for over $6 million by Australian entrepreneur Peter Freedman AM. Peter is the founder of RØDE Microphones, founding supporter of the Royal College of Music's Australia Commonwealth Scholarship and has generously loaned the guitar for this special exhibition. Peter Freedman commented: ‘When I purchased this guitar, my intention was to have it begin a worldwide tour of exhibitions, to support performing artists. I am delighted that this intent will be premiered at the Royal College of Music, London, with the first exhibition of its kind and will support talented musicians worldwide.'The exhibition also reunites the guitar with another piece of rock history – Cobain's famous olive-green mohair cardigan, worn during the 1993 Unplugged performance. This marks the first time these two legendary items have been displayed together. Alongside these items, a carefully curated selection of Nirvana memorabilia will provide insight into the band's influence, Cobain's songwriting, and the enduring legacy of Nirvana and their MTV Unplugged performance. Key highlights of the exhibition also include: A selection of Nirvana gig posters featuring a 90s punk/grunge aesthetic.A selection of collectible Nirvana vinyl in its original shrink wrap. The top portion of a Soundboard of another guitar from the same series. The exhibition has been curated by Alan di Perna – one of America's foremost rock journalists, and Royal College of Museum Curator Gabriele Rossi Rognoni. Alan di Perna's work has appeared in titles including Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Classic Rock and Billboard amongst others, and he has interviewed iconic artists including Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, Courtney Love and Pat Smear. Alan Di Perna says, ‘I'm delighted to be a part of the Royal College of Music Museum's first-ever rock music exhibition. MTV's Nirvana Unplugged in New York was a landmark event—a stand-out performance by a group that changed the course of rock history in the 1990s.' Gabriele Rossi Rognoni hopes the Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition will extend the profile and reach of the work of the Museum and Royal College of Music, opening cross dialogues with students of different backgrounds and creating bridges between historical and contemporary music. He says: ‘One of the treasures in the collections of the Royal College of Music Museum is the world's oldest guitar. I am thrilled that this exhibition will build on our extraordinary heritage, connecting it with a monument of today's music such as Kurt Cobain. I look forward to the dialogues, musical encounters and new ideas that this exhibition will spark among our visitors and the top-class musicians that study at the College.' A series of events will accompany the exhibition including new works and performances by RCM students inspired by the guitar alongside family friendly workshops and concerts. This episode marks the end of The Cobain 50 and El Cancionero de Kurt. After going through all 50 albums from Kurt’s list, we celebrated with an event in KEXP’s Gathering Space with a packed house of fans of Nirvana and the podcast to reflect on the series, what it’s meant to us, and what we’ve learned going through all of this music. Below find translations of the Spanish and Portuguese clips aired throughout the episode. Thank you to everyone who has supported our podcasts. We love you so much, it makes us sick. CLIP #1: Luis Carlos Calanca: “Maybe it made him explode, again in Brazil and worldwide it was Kurt Cobain when the band Nirvana came here. Months later, when Kurt Cobain saw them here, he started saying that the band was sensational. And then all the kids wanted to know about Os Mutantes. Lucinha Barbosa: “That’s how, word of mouth, I think, until '98, the big ones started to pay attention because there was no one to stay, no major record company that advertised didn't have that exactly through the fans themselves, word by word.” CLIP #2: José Bellas: Yes, that's right. The next day interviews were scheduled. I had to interview Dave Grohl. and I spent some time before the show at the house of one… one of the two managers of Los Brujos that was Alejandro Almada and he gave me a record for them. I took it there and I gave it to him (Dave). Anyway, another thing that was going around was that, during Los Brujos' soundcheck, Grohl showed up and went to backtages singing the song, people were saying that before Nirvana went on. CLIP #3: Jorge Francisco Soto Flores: Seattle could be any city in Chile. Seattle is a remote place, a rainy place, a place of forests. We (Chileans) are the end of the world, we are the outsiders. We have barriers that could be the Andes Mountains, the desert, the ice, the Pacific Ocean… It happened at a specific time in the 90s. We were returning to a pseudo-democracy. There is also something about representation with the lyrics in every aspect from pessimism now knowing what is going to happen next and also added to to the fact that Chileans love rock music. They are fans of rock and metal. What reason is there for people to be so fanatical about Chris Cornell that here is a god? About Cobain who is a god; that Eddie Vedder, who is a god; Mark Lineman who is a god. I think that’s the only explanation. I don’t see any other, honestly. The hosts then offer their unfiltered take on Hailstorm's new single "Darkness Always Wins," appreciating the band's talent while questioning the experimental direction of this particular track. The conversation naturally flows through a landscape of music news, from Dave Grohl's surprise Coachella appearance to Billy Idol's collaboration with Avril Lavigne and Alice Cooper's reunion with his original band after five decades. Throughout these discussions, Jay's deep industry knowledge shines through, particularly when he breaks down what makes truly great music: the perfect combination of songwriting, performance, and production. What truly sets this episode apart is the hosts' chemistry and willingness to get personal. Their "Question of the Day" segment asking for the best songs to "make whoopee to" generates hilarious responses from listeners, ranging from Nora Jones's romantic ballads to Metallica's aggressive "Enter Sandman." This playful interaction perfectly balances the more technical discussion where Jay explains different mixing philosophies, comparing the clean precision of engineers like Mike Shipley with the rawer "leave it all in" approach of others.Whether you're a music industry professional, an aspiring artist, or simply someone who appreciates the stories behind the songs, this episode delivers entertainment, education, and inspiration. As Tiffany reminds us at the end: "Every track you love was once just an idea. Don't be afraid to chase yours."LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/ Support the show

What happens when a band ditches thrash just as it goes mainstream… and dives headfirst into French poetry, industrial noise, and orchestral arrangements? You get Into the Pandemonium by Celtic Frost, a boundary-shattering 1987 album that still divides, bewilders, and inspires. In this episode, we dig deep into this genre-defying masterpiece that blurred the lines between black metal, gothic atmospheres, and avant-garde experimentation. Was it ahead of its time or just too weird to work? Either way, it's unforgettable. We explore the album's fascinating backstory—from label resistance and chart failure to its underground cult status and lasting influence on extreme music. Along the way, we unpack everything from Baudelaire lyrics and Bosch album art to dive-bomb guitar solos and operatic vocals. If you're into the darker corners of 80s metal or love when bands break all the rules, this one's for you.If you're a fan of Ministry, Bauhaus, Slayer, or the experimental side of Metallica, hit play.

Matt's birthday-inspired journey through debut albums from 1995 reveals the remarkable beginnings of artists who would shape music for decades to come. The mix includes everything from Alanis Morissette's record-breaking "Jagged Little Pill" to Dave Grohl's post-Nirvana reinvention with Foo Fighters. The mid-90s represented a pivotal moment in music history. Grunge was evolving, electronic music was gaining mainstream traction, and powerful female voices were reshaping rock and pop. We dive deep into tracks that showcase these shifts – like Garbage's ironic commentary on angst in "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" and The Chemical Brothers' groundbreaking electronic soundscapes on "Exit Planet Dust."What's particularly striking is how many of these artists continue creating vital music today. Ben Folds, Guster, The Chemical Brothers and others have evolved their sound while maintaining the creative essence first displayed in those 1995 debuts. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/matt-2025-birthday-mix/pl.u-EPWWTVMmxr1.
