Danielle DePalma is a world-class mixing engineer, the production manager of the legendary Bowery Ballroom in NYC, and a dear friend. She's toured with, recorded, mixed, and produced concerts for practically everyone you can name so it was tough to pick only a few, but in this episode we focus on the music of past and current collaborators Mercy Bell, Sharon Van Etten, Hailey Wojcik, Field Mouse, Christina Picciano, and Emily King. Danielle also pens eye-opening articles on concert management and production on SoundGirls.org, and we get into the important conversation of representation in the music industry. Her attitude toward prioritizing personal well-being extends beyond herself and benefits the artists she works well and the concert-goers who have the good fortune of experiencing one of her productions. You can read more about Danielle and her time at Purchase College (which we somehow didn't touch on in our brief interview) in Women in Sound, written by Madeleine Campbell.

In our final video of this series Claire Murphy, guitar tech, tour manager, and former musician, leaves us with some great tips for living on & off the road as a touring professional. Based on Claire's book, Girl on the Road: How to Break into Touring from a Female Perspective, Claire lays out a strategy for becoming freelance and leaving your regular job, with real world recommendations of who to contact and resources to use. Her book won't tell you how to become a sound engineer or how to re-string a guitar, but it will tell you how to get that first job on tour where you can put your skills to use or simply learn on the job. While this book isn't intended just for girls, it does address some female specific issues. But it can certainly be applied to ANYONE looking to break into the world of touring. Claire Murphy has worked for bands such as Vance Joy, Elle King, Lord Huron, Babes in Toyland, The Raveonettes, ABC, Go West, Tony Hadley, Therapy? and many many others, playing in venues from bars to arenas, and 80,000 capacity stadiums. She has toured in splitter vans around Europe, flown in for shows in Russia, South America, Australia and Japan, and toured in buses around the USA and Canada. She mentors women trying to break into the live music industry via the organization SoundGirls.org and often welcomes them to come shadow her for a day on tour. SoundGirls Living History Project - Tana Douglas - Interviewed by Juliet (Surely Lorraine) Tana Douglas is known as the first woman roadie and got her start working in Production in 1973 when Philippe Petit rigged a steel cable between the towers at the northern entrance to the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Without realizing it she had just done her first gig. This was followed by a meeting with a well-known Australian Tour manager Wane “Swampy” Jarvis, who piqued her interest in the production side of the Music Industry. This led to her first paying gig with a band called Fox, setting up and looking after their stage equipment known as the backline. After taking that job and relocating to Melbourne, an offer to work for a different band came along in the middle of 1974. This band was AC/DC. Throughout Tana's four-decade career she has worked in backline, sound, lights, logistics, production, and tour management. More on Tana Douglas https://soundgirls.org/ground-breaker... iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon “I'm not just a Bass Player, I'm a Sound System” As bassist for the legendary rap label Sugarhill Records backing Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five to the pioneering Living Colour, Doug Wimbish has lent his innovative and creative bass grooves and sounds to a roster of world-renowned musicians. Considered a pioneer in Hip-Hop bass playing and in the use of bass effects, alternate tunings and extended hand techniques, Doug's mastery of the bass is unparalled. As one of the most versatile session and touring bassists in the industry, Doug moves readily from pop and mainstream rock to hip-hop, funk, metal, symphonic metal, reggae, R&B, electronic, world and experimental music. Doug Wimbish is probably best known as the cutting edge lead bassist in the Grammy Award-winning hard rock band Living Colour, but looking beyond the obvious, one quickly sees that Doug's influence and impact on the world's musical culture is much more vast and significant than often written or realized. Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five's “The Message”, listed by Rollingstone.com as the #1 Greatest Hip Hop Song of all time, featured Doug's bass lines as do many other Sugarhill Records classics including “Apache”, “8th Wonder” and “White Lines”. Wimbish wrote the bass line on The Sequence's “Funk You Up”. To get an idea of the respect Doug has earned within the music industry, consider that in one week in 1991, Doug received personal phone calls from Living Colour, Bruce Springsteen and Seal, all asking him to work with them. Doug made the decision to work with Living Colour and joined the band, becoming its permanent bassist. He actively records and tours today with his band mates Vernon Reid, Corey Glover and Will Calhoun. The group's latest album, “Shade”, was released in September of 2017. In addition to his work with Living Colour, Doug's highly regarded career spanning all musical genres has also included recording, producing and touring with many world renowned artists including The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Herb Albert, Annie Lennox, Madonna, Carly Simon, Seal, Al Green, Billy Idol, George Clinton, Depeche Mode, Talib Kweli, Kanye West, James Brown, Mos Def, Tarja Turunen, Ronnie Wood, Freddie Jackson, Michael Bolton, Schiller, Cheb Khaled, Hari Haran and Peter Wolf, to name a few. From his early days as one of Hip-Hop's earliest architects in the Original Sugarhill Records Rhythm Section, to his long-time membership in Living Colour, TackHead, Little Axe, Jungle Funk, HeadFake, and then on to more recent collaborations including DMD the Vibes with Daru Jones & Marcus Machado, Doug continues to prove himself as one of the world's finest, versatile and most sought after bass guitarists. iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon Greg Jacobs: One of these things is not like the other ... Author, Band Manager, Photographer, Record Label Employe…… Insurance Agent?? In 1980, during high school, I was swallowed up by punk rock in Southern California. That scene was a creative incubator where I developed my vision and passion. It started with photography and expanded from there. Later in the 1980's, I worked at several record labels (SST, CRUZ, Enigma, Cargo and even Capitol for 1 day). Throughout most of the Nineties I took a hiatus from photography – I moved to San Diego, had a book published (Hell On Wheels 1994) and was managing bands (Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Big Drill Car, Supernova), then in 2001, it was over. I moved to Long Beach, CA, and got a straight job. Bored with my straight job, (yet maintaining it) I started photographing live music again. I started contributing my photos to a few magazines, record covers, websites and music videos. And, in 2020 I started working on a revised version of my book Hell On Wheels. Working on the book during the pandemic was a great distraction and I found that many of the musicians I was trying to connect with were available since the pandemic left them unable to tour. I'm very proud of this book and can't wait for others to read it. The fan-boy in me wants to list all of the bands right here and now ...But I guess I should wait until we are closer to the release date. There are 50 new bands and 54 new stories. The book will be released by University of Hell Press in the Spring of 2023. From the list of jobs above, I still consider myself active in all of them except “Record Label Employee” but who knows what the future may bring? Her early years were spent “on the other side of the glass” as a musician, but the realization of how recording could manipulate sound slowly took over her passions and she soon began exploring her fascination with all things audio. She left the east coast for Los Angeles and spent 10 years with Larrabee Studios as a Recording Engineer until 1983 when she moved into the field of Post Production Mixing. Throughout her career, she has worked with an array of outstanding talent in both music, television and film. Her passions for music and sound have only grown throughout the years and she enjoys mentoring and giving back to the industry whenever possible. The SoundGirls Living History project is a collection of interviews with audio industry veterans. The project seeks to highlight the careers and achievements of women and underrepresented groups in audio. Interviews are conducted by SoundGirls members, with guidance from experienced interviewers in the audio industry. Interviews will be available publicly in our Living History Project and for educational use and research and through our social media, YouTube channel, and The SoundGirls Podcast. The oral history interviews are typically unedited and will be archived in their original form. Dr. Rebecca Mercuri's life and career have been an eclectic mix of music and technology, with Bachelor's degrees in Classical Guitar (University of the Arts), and Computer Science (Penn State), Masters degrees in Science (Drexel) and Engineering (UPenn), and a Ph.D. in Computer and Information Systems (UPenn). She also holds honorary alumna status from Harvard in recognition of her fellowship year at Radcliffe Institute. In the 1980s, following her undergraduate education, she became an Associate Member of Technical Staff at RCA's David Sarnoff Research Center. Projects there included the development of music software for a personal computer project and the design of the first computer-controlled interactive software and hardware for the RCA VideoDisc player. While in graduate school, during the 1990s, Rebecca was employed at AT&T Bell Laboratories where she pioneered the integration of a holophonic audio system into a collaborative and interactive virtual videoconferencing system. Later, at the University of Pennsylvania, her dissertation, "Electronic Vote Tabulation: Checks & Balances" received immediate attention, as it had been defended 11 days before the 2000 Bush v. Gore election. Dr. Mercuri continues to provide expert testimony on election controversies, and her recommendations about better ways to ensure accuracy, integrity, and believability in election results have been sought and adopted internationally. Notable Software, Inc., the company Rebecca founded (in 1985) to develop and market educational and music-related software under the Apple Certified Developer Program, now (since 2005) provides a wide range of digital investigative and expert witness services for civil and criminal matters. iTunes Spotify Youtube Patreon April Tucker, Caroline Losneck, and Christoph Gelfand are the filmmaking team behind LIVING SOUND: A Documenatry About Ethel Gabriel The film began in early 2019, when April Tucker was researching early women record producers, and discovered an article about Ethel Gabriel–someone she'd never heard of before. Co-directors Caroline and Christoph interviewed Ethel for SoundGirls, an organization that supports women and underrepresented groups in the audio industry. They are currently in production and have interviewed Ethel, Ethel's family, former RCA colleagues and friends, and significant figures in the recording industry today. They have visited SONY archives and have access to Ethel's personal archives, and continue to uncover more information about Ethel's career. Ethel Gabriel broke barriers throughout her sweeping career in the music industry. Gabriel was the first woman record producer for a major music label (RCA) and the first woman A&R producer in the industry. But her contributions and achievements have been mostly unrecognized. Living Sound portrays how this remarkable woman–and the music and technology she ushered in during her five-decade career–has persevered. Gabriel's story has never been told until now, just as the music industry is starting to reflect on its own deeply entrenched issues with inclusion and diversity. Music has always been the throughline for Ethel Gabriel's life and career. Despite obstacles, she found a way to turn her love of music into a successful career. The film follows her early life as a trombonist and bandleader (playing for wounded soldiers during World War II), and her early years at RCA, where she affixed labels and packed records at the RCA Victor Camden plant. In the 1950s, Ethel worked with RCA legend Steve Sholes, through the signing of hip-swingin' Elvis Presley to RCA, and the opening of Nashville's RCA Studio. In the A&R department, Ethel had a magic touch with albums of compilations and re-released works. Her A&R work spanned across nearly every artist on the RCA catalogue during her time–including Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Perry Como, Glenn Miller, and Tommy Dorsey. The film uncovers how Gabriel, each step of the way, shattered the glass ceiling en route to becoming the legend she is today. Weaving archival footage with music that Gabriel discovered and produced, the film juxtaposes Gabriel's memories with interviews of influential music industry figures and family members. The film portrays her huge (yet largely unrecognized) influence on music and technology, as well as the path she forged for women in the industry. Even as the memories fade, Ethel Gabriel's music and legacy remain. Earlier this year we set out in search of the Finest Florida Podcast, and we hit the jackpot! We found a ton of incredible podcasts made by talented people right here in the Sunshine State. When we decided to start our very own podcast, we knew we wanted to sit down with some of these fellow Florida-based creators. So we invited Scott and Mary from the No New Friends podcast to come down to our Experience Center for a long and winding conversation that dives into everything from their philosophy on podcasting, to why the Purple Wedding in Game of Thrones is one of the more satisfying moments in life. If you want to follow more of the No New Friends podcast, they are constantly pumping out incredible content on their Facebook and YouTube channels. And you can check out their podcast over on their Anchor.fm page of course! Want to hear more from the Finest Florida Podcasts? We caught up with the winners of our contest, the SoundGirls, in a recent episode. Click here to listen! Earlier this year we went out in search of finding Florida's Finest Podcast. Simply put, we wanted to find and connect with fellow Floridians who are hard at work putting out great content. And if we could help make their podcast sound a little bit better, then that would be a win-win for everyone! So we put together a Podcasting Prize Pack (we love alliteration around here) featuring two Shure MV7 podcasting microphones, cash, and more, and set out to find ourselves some amazing podcasts. This week on the Sound Connections podcast, we're sitting down with the WINNERS of our Florida's Finest Podcast contest, the SoundGirls! In case you haven't heard of them before, SoundGirls.org is a support network for women and non-binary people working in the professional audio industry. Women make up just 5% of the professional workforce in audio and music production, and SoundGirls provides an opportunity for women to network, share advice, and provide support to one another while also working to inspire and empower the next generation to enter the world of professional audio and music production. Each week on the SoundGirls Podcast they interview audio professionals who share their stories and offer tips and tricks from what they've learned in their careers. Now, we were able to flip the tables and interview two of the SoundGirls podcast hosts, Susan Williams and Tori McCook! Susan started the SoundGirls podcast back in May of 2020, while Tori has recently taken over hosting duties for the show. We get to hear about their backgrounds, why the podcast was formed, and what we can expect from the show moving forward!
