For the last Broken Copier episode of 2024, Marcus was able to speak with Jireh Keys, an early-career elementary school teacher in Fordyce, Arkansas—who also just happens to have been a freshman back in the first English class Marcus ever taught back in 2012. In this conversation, Jireh shares about her path into the classroom, the experience of returning to teach in the community that raised her, and all the meaning she has found in her new identity as a teacher. (And yes, you can imagine Marcus smiling wide this entire conversation as he listened to his former student talk about absolutely thriving in the classroom as a teacher herself!)Thanks, as always, to:Alberto Lugo, one of Jim's former students, for writing and recording original intro music; Tom Csatari for allowing us to use his band's recording of “Woodstock” from their 2020 album, Garden; and Courtney Milavec for graphic design.Find Tom's work at uncivilizedtom.com, and on Instagram @banduncivilized.Find Alberto's work at djsynchro.weebly.com, and on Instagram @djsynchro.Email us here with feedback or any other questions as well: thebrokencopier@substack.com.Thanks for listening (and tell your friends)! parkrun, which started as a small, informal 5K run with just 13 participants in Bushy Park, London, in 2004, has grown into a global phenomenon with over 10 million runners and 2600 parkruns. Its founder, South African born, Paul Sinton-Hewitt grew up in Potchefstroom. From only 26 runners and 3 volunteers at the first run, parkrun has flourished, particularly in South Africa, where more than a million of its members are based. Bruce Fordyce, the legendary South African ultra-marathon runner, is one of the key figures behind parkrun's success. In an interview with BizNews, Fordyce shared that he plans to participate in his 549th parkrun this weekend, despite having recently undergone knee replacement surgery. parkrun started he says that South Africans are drawn to the 5-kilometer parkrun due to its safety, the majority of runners are women. Fordyce says participants enjoy adding new runs to their totals, which he describes as “stamp collecting on steroids,” as they try to add more destinations to their list.
"Circumstances don't make a man, they reveal him." - Dr. Wayne DyerMentor, coach, real estate guru, and founder of The B5 Method Ed Fordyce is making his debut on the show today and we are incredibly excited to bring his raw and unfiltered style to our listeners today. Ed and Jay are digging into what it takes for people who feel less confident in their social abilities to break through that and meet some new people, what hitting a rock bottom and getting sober takes and why 12-step programs have immeasurable value, and why all the money in the world won't make you happy. This episode is as raw and real as it gets and we're happy to be sharing it with you with the one and only Ed Fordyce.
1851 it is, and the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, also known as the Great Exhibition or the Crystal Palace Exhibition took place in Hyde Park, London, from 1 May to 15 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs, exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century. Famous people of the time attended the Great Exhibition, including Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Michael Faraday, Samuel Colt, writers like Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, George Eliot, Alfred Tennyson, and William Makepeace Thackeray. Schweppes was the official sponsor. The Great Exhibition was a celebration of modern industrial technology and design - mainly for the British who were trying to show how through tech, the world would be a better place - leading the nations in innovations so to speak. Six million people, equivalent to a third of the entire population of Britain at the time, visited the Great Exhibition, averaging over 42 000 visitors a day, sometimes topping 100 000. Thomas Cook managed the travel arrangements for the Exhibition, and made the equivalent of 33.2 million pounds in today's cash - or 186 000 pounds back in 1851, and promptly used the money to found the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Science Museum, as well as the Natural History Museum. Inventor Frederick Bakewell demonstrated a precurser to something that we know as a Fax Machine. The New Zealand exhibit was well liked, featuring Maori crafts such as flax baskets, carved wooden objects, eel traps, mats, fish hooks and the scourge of the British army in Kiwiland, their hand clubs. A couple of conservative politicians let it be known they were not happy about the Exhibition, saying visitors would turn into a revolutionary mob. Considering that Karl Marx was part of the visitors - perhaps not unsurprisingly. But did Karl Marx use the services of Thomas Cook? Not exactly a question destined for a dissertation. This Exhibition went on to become a symbol of the Victorian Era. Meanwhile … a serious War in one of its colonies, the Cape was more than disquietening - it appeared this war was more a Victorian error. AS in mistake. amaNgqika chief Maqoma was causing Harry Smith sleepness nights, and Colonel Fordyce and his colleagues were fighting for their lives along the Amathola mountains. The Waterkloof ridges — in a place to the west of Fort Beaufort — was where the Khoekhoe and coloured marksmen made their greatest impact. The ex-Cape Mounted Rifles members amongst the rebels had other uses. They understood the British bugle calls, having been trained by the British, further exasperating men like Henry Somerset and Colonel Fordyce. The amaXhosa and Khoekhoe rebels were also much more organised than in previous wars against the invaders. They targeted the Messengers reading updates from British commanders intended for Grahamstown and been reading the reports, and some of the rebels were actually being supplied directly from Grahamstown itself. Then Henry seemed to receive an injection of spine - of determination. On November 6th 1851 he massed two large columns, one under Colonel Fordyce, and the other led by Colonel Michel. Unbeknownest to him, this was to be Fordyce's last mission. Michel's column had to advance up the Waterkloof aka Mount Misery, while Fordyce's column would wait above, on the summit. Michel would drive the rebels up the mountain, Fordyce would trap them and voila! Victory. It didn't quite work that way.

If you've never heard of the Acadians, you're in for a beautiful treat in The Seamstress of Acadie by Laura Frantz. Listen in and hear why I am excited for this book and her upcoming release this month note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. I've seen Laura Frantz's books for years, and had even bought a couple. But when another author told me to read her Courting Morrow Little, I knew this gal someone I need to read. And learning how hard it is to find that book, I went to eBay and bought another copy just in case. Laura talked a lot about the history of the Acadians but ALSO about another book coming out soon (that is related to The Rose and Thistle... I think?) We recorded months ago, so I might have gotten that wrong. The Seamstress of Acadie by Laura Frantz As 1754 is drawing to a close, tensions between the French and the British on Canada's Acadian shore are reaching a fever pitch. Seamstress Sylvie Galant and her family--French-speaking Acadians wishing to remain neutral--are caught in the middle, their land positioned between two forts flying rival flags. Amid preparations for the celebration of Noël, the talk is of unrest, coming war, and William Blackburn, the British Army Ranger raising havoc across North America's borderlands. As summer takes hold in 1755 and British ships appear on the horizon, Sylvie encounters Blackburn, who warns her of the coming invasion. Rather than participate in the forced removal of the Acadians from their land, he resigns his commission. But that cannot save Sylvie or her kin. Relocated on a ramshackle ship to Virginia, Sylvie struggles to pick up the pieces of her life. When her path crosses once more with William's, they must work through the complex tangle of their shared, shattered past to navigate the present and forge an enduring future. And don't miss her upcoming release: A Matter of Honor Available July 24, 2024 Having grown up at Wedderburn Castle in the serene Scottish Lowlands, Orin Hume is thrust into the dazzling realm of London society and Court circles as Poet Laureate of Britain. But at the height of his fame a former tragedy and his ties to a lass he once loved lead him home to Berwickshire again. When his return is further marred by lost love letters and scheming kin who conspire to keep the pair apart, can Lady Maryn Lockhart, now Duchess of Fordyce, forgive him? Or will the shadows of the past and the complexities of the present rewrite their love story? Learn more about Laura on her WEBSITE and follow her on GoodReads and BookBub. Like to listen on the go? The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In 06/22/24. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS Days after the "juneteenth" national holiday, a White Race Soldier attacked the only grocery story in Fordyce, Arkansas - a town with a population just over 3,000 people. Census records indicate the town is 60% black, and the store, The Mad Butcher, is the only shopping center in town. Suspected Racist Travis Posey reportedly shot 13 people in total, killing three. At least two of the people killed is classified as White. Gus thought it was significant that this Terrorist attack happened on June 21st, the day after the solstice. The 2015 White Terrorist attack in Charleston, South Carolina happened on June 17. Just like the White gunmen in Buffalo and Charleston, Posey was captured alive - even though he shot Arkansas enforcement officers. C.O.W.S.'s listeners should recall last week's report about a Racist Suspect (Robert Adams Prieto) in Arizona who wanted to conduct a mass shooting against black people before the November election. #RyanAmichette #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The C.O.W.S. Neutralizing Workplace Racism 06/21/24. A C.O.W.S. investor informed Gus about a Florida teacher who might lose her teaching license as a result of wearing a face mask with a "black lives matter" slogan. For years, Gus T. has vigorously discouraged wearing any sort of paraphernalia or clothing branded with political messaging. It's a presidential election year, so expect an abundance of rhetoric and verbal sparring over candidates. Do not participate in these conversations on the job. Even if all of your co-workers are classified as black, it's not logical to assume that all of your black colleagues support "black lives matter" or any other political ideology or slogan. Your clothing/attire should not attract unnecessary attention or distract from your primary workplace objective: making as much money as possible while learning everything that is constructive. Also relating to clothing in the workplace, hours before this segment aired live, a White Man shot 14 people in Fordyce, Arkansas - a town of just over 3,000. 3 people were killed. The incident reminded Gus T. of the 2022 TOPS Buffalo massacre, were black employees lost their shoes escaping a White gunman. In the event of an earthquake or White Terrorist attack, workplace footwear/clothing should not hamper your ability to save your life. This week is Juneteenth, and that should also be irrelevant to your workplace attire and performance. If you're classified as black or non-white, avoid joining any projects or committees designed to celebrate this "negro holiday." In fact, don't be surprised if your White co-workers have an unsolicited snide remark about the newest federal holiday. #NoJuneteenthInArkansas #TheCOWS15Years #SafetyFirst INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Dr. Marshall Fordyce, CEO and Founder of Vera Therapeutics, discusses the company's patient-centric approach to developing new medicines for autoimmune diseases. Vera is currently in Phase 3 with a molecule called Atacicept, which targets B cells in autoimmune diseases. They focus on IgA nephropathy, a rare kidney disease, and the third most common cause of kidney failure. A key concern is that declining kidney function is often misdiagnosed and not screened for because the early warning signs are so subtle. Marshall explains, "Let me give you an example of our lead indication. So, our molecule in development is called atacicept. It targets the immune system in the specific area of B cells, and B cells are the factories of our antibodies, which we need to fight infection over our lifetime. But in patients with autoimmune disease, these B cells are overstimulated, they're overactive, and there are only a few medicines that target B cells with an appropriate balance of safety and efficacy. We had an insight that the science told us that by inhibiting two key factors in the body, BAFF and APRIL, we could normalize that overactivity of B cells and have better outcomes." "Now traditional drug development may be long and expensive. We were very strategic in picking IgA nephropathy. This is an area that has had very little drug development over the last decade. A few small companies started to become interested in this area, and thankfully, because of patient advocacy, the FDA allowed a surrogate endpoint in Phase 3 trials, which made it more efficient to bring this molecule forward. So, there are now two drugs on the market for the first time in the last three or four years, for two new drugs in IgA nephropathy. They don't target B cells, which is really what's driving this disease. They work downstream, or they're nonspecific." "What Vera did differently is that we thought that we could actually demonstrate that kidney function, which in these young patients is declining at an alarming rate, if we could demonstrate that kidney function doesn't decline, that would be meaningful. It would be a significant leap. We don't see that happen in "traditional" drug development often, in my view. So, I think what's different here is that we're picking an area where we think we can intervene and, in early-stage development, show a meaningful improvement in outcomes for patients." #VeraTherapeutics #KidneyDisease #RareDisease #BCells #Immunotherapy #AutoimmuneDiseases #IgANephropathy veratx.com Listen to the podcast here

Last time on the Bestow Curse podcast, our heroes received orders from the queen to help return order to Old Korvosa during her address to the people of the city. The queen also announced significant government restructuring and in a shocking turn of events, survived an assassination attempt from the recently deposed leader of the Sable Company! After the day's events, Sylvie revealed some troubling history concerning the Fordyce household and the party prepared to head to the old city. What awaits them beyond the quarantine? While DNA may be the blueprint of life, proteins are the workhorses, says Polly Fordyce, a bioengineer, explaining how one of her favorites, kinesin, “walks” in 8-nanometer steps transporting chemical cargo through the body. More remarkable still, Fordyce says, kinesin is just one among thousands of “incredible” proteins that make life happen, as she tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.

In this episode I talk with Greg, Jeremy and Lathan Erwin from Erwin Resource Service. ERS is a family owned and operated logging company based in Fordyce, Arkansas. Three generations of Erwins have made it their career and goal to grow the family business out in the woods. They were at the Oregon Logging Conference with Wayne and Robyn Cochran from Axis Forestry. This episode is my first one that was recorded in person, in my office. With that being said, please excuse any weird audio things, I'm working through them as I go. In this episode we chat about how things are done in southern Arkansas and how the Erwin family was the first US customer of Axis Forestry. These guys are pretty awesome to chat with and I would like to thank Wayne and Robyn for the idea and the Erwins for their time on the morning they had to fly back home. Since I'm thanking everyone, I also want to thank the listeners of this podcast for your continued support. I can't get everyone in person for the show but I am going to do my best to get everyone I can to be in person from here on out. This episode is brought to you by Axis Forestry. Axis Forestry recently released their new Rebel T22 processing head in December 2022. The Rebel T22 is built tough, with the North American logger in mind. To learn more about their products, visit their web site www.axisforestry.com or call 778-471-2947 today to place an order. Hey, great to bring you Episode #80 Stephen Fordyce - "Seconds from Death" with the support of our sponsor XDEEP and the patrons of Speaking Sidemount. Huge thanks to both for their support, which makes this podcast possible. The title refers to Australian Tech Diver of the Year, Stephen Fordyce reliving his harrowing, near-death experience where he had a laryngospasm at over 50m while on a push cave exploration dive in Tasmania Australia. To say this was harrowing is an understatement but Stephen's story of survival and subsequently what he has learned about the incident is as compelling as it is terrifying. In addition to recalling the near-death experience, Stephen relates some on his diving background, we talk about how he combines his engineering business with diving, we discuss what it takes to be a cave explorer and then, he shares on his exploration efforts in Tasmania Australia. We go through life in a quest for fulfillment. However, we often fall into the trap of thinking about how working ourselves until we burn out is the only way. Life and business strategist Ed Fordyce begs to disagree. He helps people create a more fulfilled life by addressing the different areas in our lives, both personal and professional. In this episode, he talks to Chris Swartz about his principles of raw, authentic, unfiltered fulfillment to equip others with the skills to overcome burnout, find their true passions, and create sustainable change within their lives. Ed shares with us how he moves someone from being inspired to inspiring them to take action. He then shares the secret to the question: why do most millionaires come out of down markets? Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Ryan: Dr. Cabral, I started wearing a fitness tracking watch about a year ago and have noticed a very common trend in heart rate throughout the day. According to my device, my daily resting heart rate low point occurs around 1-3pm after my afternoon walk, as opposed to during sleep, where most people claim your lowest heart rate occurs. I feel very rested upon waking, and tend to get very good sleep, bot in quality and quantity. For some context, I am 27, workout in the mornings, work a job that some days requires non-stop moving and other days based at a desk, I don't eat within 2-3 hours of going to bed, and my RHR hits 39-42 bpm in the afternoon, while usually hovering around 50-60 throughout the night. I am aware of the potential accuracy issues, but the repeating trend has me curious if this is an indicator of anything I could improve. Thank you for all you do and for keeping me constantly curious and wanting to learn and improve! Julia: You and your team are incredible. Thank you for your dedication. I had a hair tissue test done right before removing my mercury dental fillings and other heavy metals came up such as tin and nickel but mercury was low! My holistic dentist said that it might have been because the mercury is trapped and can't get out from the body and hence not showing up in the hair. Is this possible? Synthia: How would you go about someone that has high cortisol in the AM but low cortisol in the afternoon, evening and before bed? I already wake up earlier than everyone else to get my morning routine in and actually start my day relaxed before my toddler wakes up. Carly: Hi Dr. Cabral! So much gratitude for your team and all that you do to empower us to reclaim our health and move forward on our journey towards healing! My parents recently had a series of unfortunate events happen following a major error made by a roofer when getting their roof replaced. Long story short, they had a lot of water damage in their ceilings and walls and have to get everything replaced to avoid mold damage. Their house has become unlivable. Despite our pleas, my father is insistent on staying and sleeping in the house; going down with the ship. I am worried about all the insulation and fiberglass he could be inhaling and would appreciate any suggestions on how to help him detox his lungs. Thank you so much! Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral! I am such a huge fan of your podcast and it has honestly really changed my life. I now try to share it along with your book with everyone I know because it truly is a blessing. Thank you for all you and your team do! So, about seven years ago, I (25 yr Female) got this rash in my armpit and my dermatologist diagnosed it as a rare skin condition called Fox-fordyce disease. She told me there was no real cure but prescribed me some creams that I tried with no success. I have been learning a lot about Ayurveda these past few years and what it has taught me is that almost all conditions are reversible with the right approach and with time. Do you know of any remedy to this condition or at least a way to reduce it? I would really appreciate your insight. I would also love to hear your thoughts on healing post inflammatory hyper pigmentation on darker skin tones. I have some dark pigmentation on my legs from insect bites when I was a child that have never really lightened. Numerous doctors have told me that they cant prescribe the usual creams for this condition because they are not effective on darker complexions and could actually make the hyperpigmentation worse. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this. Thank you! Dani: Hey, Dr Cabral. Quick question. A celebrity (Lori Harvey) was being praised for her figure and many women asked what's her secret. She responded that she trains twice a day (plates is one of the workouts) and ate 1200 calories a day for 21 days. This she said aided her to lose 15 lbs and get the figure she wanted. Her comments received backlash. So the question is, is what she did safe for her or something that one should not have done?
