Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2026 66:12

Just Jimmy and Tyler kicking off June with something that’s been on Jimmy’s mind since the Rubicon trip — and since the Barrett Lake outhouse project started spreading to other forests. The short version: the National Forest Service is being restructured in a way that removes local regional offices. The closest regional office for El Dorado National Forest, Tahoe National Forest, and Stanislaus National Forest is now in Salt Lake City. That means people who have never set foot on our trails are making decisions about them. Jimmy draws the parallel to what happened at Gemini Bridges and Labyrinth Rims — 2,200 miles of trails evaluated and closed by people working off a map. No boots on the ground. And those were local BLM offices. Now imagine Salt Lake City. The call to action is clear: the off-road community needs to show up at the table before the restructuring finishes and the table gets moved somewhere else. Jimmy runs through what that looks like in practice. The Mad Hatters just completed their adopted section of the Rubicon Trail. Friends of Fordyce and Friends of Rubicon had a big work weekend. Spree to Four (or the Granite Bandits — Jimmy goes back and forth) does Corral Hollow every year and opens more roads than the county can staff. There’s a work party at Moon Rocks coming up to install 32 named obstacle signs, with BLM permission. And the Barrett Lake blob bathroom project — the one the off-road community funded and built — is now being copied onto Fordyce at Committee Crossing and Wind Chill 3, and at Observation Point on the Rubicon. Tahoe National Forest, which historically does not collaborate with El Dorado National Forest, asked to copy the project. That’s what showing up looks like. How to get involved: contact your local ranger district, come with questions not demands, keep digging until you find the person who can actually answer them. Search Facebook groups for your specific riding area. If nothing exists, start the conversation. For funding, Onyx has their Trail Revival Program live right now — $5,000 grants, Jimmy applied and got one last year, the main ask is media showing the work was done. Tread Lightly and BFG also have trail grant programs. The window for making a real impact is right now, during the restructure, not after it’s done. Also in this episode: today (June 1) is the last day to use the Devos LightRanger 500 group buy discount code. The Russo May giveaway has closed — winner announcement coming Thursday. The June giveaway is not announced yet but Jimmy teases it’s a company they’ve worked with before and it’s a good one. USDA's Richard Fordyce Highlights Farm Bill Gains, Tax Relief, and Support for California Agriculture

The AgNet News Hour featured a detailed conversation with USDA Undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation Richard Fordyce, who outlined key federal efforts aimed at supporting farmers, improving financial stability, and expanding opportunities for agriculture across California and the nation. Fordyce, a fourth-generation farmer from Missouri, emphasized that the USDA remains focused on one core mission, supporting farmers through increasingly complex and challenging conditions. “Farmers today are mechanics, agronomists, chemists… they're a whole bunch of things wrapped into one,” Fordyce said, highlighting the technical demands of modern agriculture. A major focus of the discussion was the impact of what Fordyce referred to as the “one big, beautiful bill,” which includes several provisions designed to strengthen agriculture's financial outlook. Among the most significant is a major adjustment to estate taxes, raising the exemption to $15 million per individual, something Fordyce said will help keep family farms intact across generations. “There is a $15 million per individual estate tax exemption to eliminate the death tax,” he explained. The legislation also expands Section 179 tax provisions, allowing farmers to expense equipment, buildings, and improvements in the year of purchase rather than depreciating them over time. According to Fordyce, this change offers growers greater flexibility in managing their finances and reinvesting in operations. In addition, updates to safety net programs like ARC and PLC include increased reference prices and expanded base acres, both critical factors in determining federal support payments. These updates aim to better reflect today's economic conditions and provide a stronger financial cushion for producers. Fordyce also outlined the role of USDA agencies within the Farm Production and Conservation (FPAC) mission area, including the Farm Service Agency (FSA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and Risk Management Agency (RMA). These programs provide everything from disaster assistance and conservation funding to crop insurance and technical support. “The best resource is your local FSA or NRCS office,” Fordyce said, encouraging farmers to connect with local experts who can help navigate available programs. For California growers, Fordyce acknowledged unique challenges, particularly around water, regulation, and labor, but stressed that federal programs are well-positioned to support the state's highly diverse agricultural sector. “California is the most diverse agriculture state in the union,” he said. Looking ahead, Fordyce noted that while input costs remain a concern and weather continues to be unpredictable, efforts to expand trade opportunities and build demand, both domestically and internationally, could help strengthen market conditions in 2026. At the same time, he pointed to strong margins in sectors like cattle, even as herd sizes remain constrained due to drought and market dynamics. Ultimately, Fordyce reinforced that the USDA is committed to standing behind farmers and ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to succeed. “Farming can be great again, without a doubt,” he said. 1851 it is, and the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, also known as the Great Exhibition or the Crystal Palace Exhibition took place in Hyde Park, London, from 1 May to 15 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs, exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century. Famous people of the time attended the Great Exhibition, including Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Michael Faraday, Samuel Colt, writers like Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, George Eliot, Alfred Tennyson, and William Makepeace Thackeray. Schweppes was the official sponsor. The Great Exhibition was a celebration of modern industrial technology and design - mainly for the British who were trying to show how through tech, the world would be a better place - leading the nations in innovations so to speak. Six million people, equivalent to a third of the entire population of Britain at the time, visited the Great Exhibition, averaging over 42 000 visitors a day, sometimes topping 100 000. Thomas Cook managed the travel arrangements for the Exhibition, and made the equivalent of 33.2 million pounds in today's cash - or 186 000 pounds back in 1851, and promptly used the money to found the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Science Museum, as well as the Natural History Museum. Inventor Frederick Bakewell demonstrated a precurser to something that we know as a Fax Machine. The New Zealand exhibit was well liked, featuring Maori crafts such as flax baskets, carved wooden objects, eel traps, mats, fish hooks and the scourge of the British army in Kiwiland, their hand clubs. A couple of conservative politicians let it be known they were not happy about the Exhibition, saying visitors would turn into a revolutionary mob. Considering that Karl Marx was part of the visitors - perhaps not unsurprisingly. But did Karl Marx use the services of Thomas Cook? Not exactly a question destined for a dissertation. This Exhibition went on to become a symbol of the Victorian Era. Meanwhile … a serious War in one of its colonies, the Cape was more than disquietening - it appeared this war was more a Victorian error. AS in mistake. amaNgqika chief Maqoma was causing Harry Smith sleepness nights, and Colonel Fordyce and his colleagues were fighting for their lives along the Amathola mountains. The Waterkloof ridges — in a place to the west of Fort Beaufort — was where the Khoekhoe and coloured marksmen made their greatest impact. The ex-Cape Mounted Rifles members amongst the rebels had other uses. They understood the British bugle calls, having been trained by the British, further exasperating men like Henry Somerset and Colonel Fordyce. The amaXhosa and Khoekhoe rebels were also much more organised than in previous wars against the invaders. They targeted the Messengers reading updates from British commanders intended for Grahamstown and been reading the reports, and some of the rebels were actually being supplied directly from Grahamstown itself. Then Henry seemed to receive an injection of spine - of determination. On November 6th 1851 he massed two large columns, one under Colonel Fordyce, and the other led by Colonel Michel. Unbeknownest to him, this was to be Fordyce's last mission. Michel's column had to advance up the Waterkloof aka Mount Misery, while Fordyce's column would wait above, on the summit. Michel would drive the rebels up the mountain, Fordyce would trap them and voila! Victory. It didn't quite work that way.

But when another author told me to read her Courting Morrow Little, I knew this gal someone I need to read.  And learning how hard it is to find that book, I went to eBay and bought another copy just in case.   Laura talked a lot about the history of the Acadians but ALSO about another book coming out soon (that is related to The Rose and Thistle... I think?)  We recorded months ago, so I might have gotten that wrong.  The Seamstress of Acadie by Laura Frantz  As 1754 is drawing to a close, tensions between the French and the British on Canada's Acadian shore are reaching a fever pitch. Seamstress Sylvie Galant and her family--French-speaking Acadians wishing to remain neutral--are caught in the middle, their land positioned between two forts flying rival flags. Amid preparations for the celebration of Noël, the talk is of unrest, coming war, and William Blackburn, the British Army Ranger raising havoc across North America's borderlands. As summer takes hold in 1755 and British ships appear on the horizon, Sylvie encounters Blackburn, who warns her of the coming invasion. Rather than participate in the forced removal of the Acadians from their land, he resigns his commission. But that cannot save Sylvie or her kin. Relocated on a ramshackle ship to Virginia, Sylvie struggles to pick up the pieces of her life. When her path crosses once more with William's, they must work through the complex tangle of their shared, shattered past to navigate the present and forge an enduring future. And don't miss her upcoming release: A Matter of Honor Available July 24, 2024 Having grown up at Wedderburn Castle in the serene Scottish Lowlands, Orin Hume is thrust into the dazzling realm of London society and Court circles as Poet Laureate of Britain. But at the height of his fame a former tragedy and his ties to a lass he once loved lead him home to Berwickshire again. When his return is further marred by lost love letters and scheming kin who conspire to keep the pair apart, can Lady Maryn Lockhart, now Duchess of Fordyce, forgive him? Or will the shadows of the past and the complexities of the present rewrite their love story? Learn more about Laura on her  WEBSITE and follow her on GoodReads and BookBub. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In 06/22/24. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS Days after the "juneteenth" national holiday, a White Race Soldier attacked the only grocery story in Fordyce, Arkansas - a town with a population just over 3,000 people. Census records indicate the town is 60% black, and the store, The Mad Butcher, is the only shopping center in town. Suspected Racist Travis Posey reportedly shot 13 people in total, killing three. At least two of the people killed is classified as White. Gus thought it was significant that this Terrorist attack happened on June 21st, the day after the solstice. The 2015 White Terrorist attack in Charleston, South Carolina happened on June 17. Just like the White gunmen in Buffalo and Charleston, Posey was captured alive - even though he shot Arkansas enforcement officers. C.O.W.S.'s listeners should recall last week's report about a Racist Suspect (Robert Adams Prieto) in Arizona who wanted to conduct a mass shooting against black people before the November election. #RyanAmichette #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The C.O.W.S. Neutralizing Workplace Racism 06/21/24. A C.O.W.S. investor informed Gus about a Florida teacher who might lose her teaching license as a result of wearing a face mask with a "black lives matter" slogan. For years, Gus T. has vigorously discouraged wearing any sort of paraphernalia or clothing branded with political messaging. It's a presidential election year, so expect an abundance of rhetoric and verbal sparring over candidates. Do not participate in these conversations on the job. Even if all of your co-workers are classified as black, it's not logical to assume that all of your black colleagues support "black lives matter" or any other political ideology or slogan. Your clothing/attire should not attract unnecessary attention or distract from your primary workplace objective: making as much money as possible while learning everything that is constructive. Also relating to clothing in the workplace, hours before this segment aired live, a White Man shot 14 people in Fordyce, Arkansas - a town of just over 3,000. 3 people were killed. The incident reminded Gus T. of the 2022 TOPS Buffalo massacre, were black employees lost their shoes escaping a White gunman. In the event of an earthquake or White Terrorist attack, workplace footwear/clothing should not hamper your ability to save your life. This week is Juneteenth, and that should also be irrelevant to your workplace attire and performance. If you're classified as black or non-white, avoid joining any projects or committees designed to celebrate this "negro holiday." In fact, don't be surprised if your White co-workers have an unsolicited snide remark about the newest federal holiday. #NoJuneteenthInArkansas #TheCOWS15Years #SafetyFirst INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
