In this episode, we travel to Bismarck, North Dakota, where the faithful of St. Michael's are building a new Romanesque church on a hill overlooking the city. Fr. Dominic May walks us through the remarkable history of Tradition in North Dakota, from the legacy of Fr. Frederick Nelson and Powers Lake, to the first Society Masses offered in a living room, to the growth of a chapel serving faithful across the Dakotas and parts of Montana. After years of outgrowing their current church in Mandan, the parish purchased 20 acres on the edge of Bismarck and began raising a beautiful new house of God, with salvaged marble altars, restored pews, and countless hours of parishioner labor. With construction well underway, St. Michael's is preparing a new home for the Mass – and for generations of Catholic families to come. If you showed the same bitewing to 10 dentists, would they all agree on whether to pick up the drill? Why does the word monitoring mean nothing to a patient — and how does swapping it for active surveillance change everything from your notes to your indemnity to your government policy meetings? Is it overtreatment to act on an E2 lesion — or is “watch and wait” actually the lazy answer dressed up as minimally invasive? And what should you actually do with AI caries detection that flags shadows your eye doesn't see? In this episode, Professor Avijit Banerjee — Professor of Cariology & Operative Dentistry at King's College London, Honorary Consultant at Guy's & St Thomas', and First Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the College of General Dentistry — sits down with Jaz for what is genuinely one of the most important caries conversations on the podcast. Part one of two. Avijit doesn't do soft answers. The drill-fill-bill model is broken. “Monitoring” needs to go. “Treatment planning” is antiquated terminology medics dropped twenty-five years ago. And AI in caries diagnosis? Useful — but the moment it gets things wrong, you are the one with indemnity, not the software. What you walk away with is a framework (MIOC), a decision filter (three factors that decide whether to pick up a bur), and a vocabulary shift you can implement tomorrow. Part two covers peptides, SDF, hydroxyapatite, stepwise excavation, and managing caries in xerostomia. https://youtu.be/YriLo8_hXNw Watch PDP268 on YouTube Protrusive Dental Pearl: Delete the Word “Monitor” from Your Vocabulary Stop saying monitor. Start saying active surveillance. ⚠️ Active surveillance must not mean passive delay — document your reasoning, risk assessment, and what would trigger intervention. ✅ Explain it to patients as structured, proactive care: clinical checks, radiographs, risk review, behaviour support, and timely action if things change. Key Takeaways Minimum intervention oral care is bigger than minimally invasive dentistry. MIOC is prevention-based, person-focused, susceptibility-related, and delivered by the whole oral healthcare team. MID is only one part of MIOC: operative dentistry when a tooth actually needs intervention. The four MIOC domains are: identify the problem, prevent lesions and control disease, provide minimally invasive operative care, then reassess. A care plan is more useful than a treatment plan because it includes justification, prevention, behaviour change, and review. Ask patients what matters to you, not just what's the matter with you. Cavitation, cleansability, and lesion activity should guide whether to intervene operatively. A cavitated lesion that cannot be cleaned is much more likely to remain active. Smooth surface lesions may sometimes be made cleansable without conventional drilling. Restorations are not just about filling holes; they help recreate a cleansable tooth surface. There is no single perfect caries detection technology — clinical examination and good radiographs remain fundamental. If using NIRI, fluorescence, scanners, or AI, understand how the technology works and where it fails. AI should support diagnosis, not replace clinical judgement. For uncertain early lesions, triangulate: clinical findings, radiographs, risk, technology, and patient factors. Proximal resin infiltration has a role in the right patient and situation, especially as part of a wider prevention-led strategy. In this episode, we travel to Armada, Michigan, where St. Joseph's, one of the oldest and most historic SSPX communities in the United States, is preparing for a new chapter. Fr. Steven Soos and Tyler Gianattasio walk us through the remarkable history of this parish, from its beginnings with concerned Catholic families in the Detroit area, to the first Society foundations in Michigan, to the growth of a vibrant community centered on the Mass, the school, and devotion to St. Joseph. Now, after years of growth and tight limitations on its current property, the parish has purchased 22 acres of debt-free land and is planning a new campus with a larger church, a proper school, fields, parish spaces, and room for future generations. With an ambitious campaign already underway, St. Joseph's is looking to build not just for today, but for the next 50 to 100 years. In this episode, host Stephen Diggins and wood floor historical restoration expert Michael Purser of The Rosebud Company in Atlanta take a deep dive into wood floor finishes: the rise of urethane finishes, which helped revive wood flooring after wall-to-wall carpet nearly crushed the trade; how homeowners drove the change because they were tired of the constant upkeep of wax floors; and the shift from oil-modified urethanes to early waterborne finishes and later hardwax oils; and the need to educate clients instead of allowing them to blame the finish for every problem. The pair also examine the difference between true restoration and ordinary refinishing—how restoration means protecting original wood and removing surface buildup without sacrificing historic material, often through what he calls “Passive Refinishing” rather than sanding. Purser challenges romantic ideas about old finishes, noting that historic wax, shellac, oil, and varnish systems were often labor-intensive, fragile, and unattractive unless maintained by wealthy households with help. He also explains the nuances of museum and preservation work, where every mark, patch, and “witness” area can carry historical meaning, and the ultimate sin would be to make the wood flooring look brand new. In this episode, we visit St. Isidore's in Watkins, Colorado, just east of Denver where a rural plot of farmland became a beautiful Romanesque church. Fr. Paul Robinson walks us through the rich history of the priory, from its origins in a strip mall chapel to the donation of 18 acres and the building of one of the Society's most beautiful churches. Now, that same community is answering a new call: to restore the church's aging structure, to pave the lot after more than two decades of use, and to build a proper school so their children no longer have to study in the basement. With a multi-year capital campaign underway and incredible momentum already, the prospects are bright for St. Isidore's. In this episode, we travel to Jacksonville, Florida, where the faithful of St. Michael's have taken on a monumental task: the restoration of a once-abandoned historic church in the city's Springfield neighborhood. Originally built in 1920 as a Catholic parish and later sold to the Seventh-day Adventists, the church is now being reclaimed as a house of God and rededicated to Our Lady of Pompeii. With stunning Romanesque architecture, a historic altar from the Bronx, and a vibrant fundraising campaign already more than two-thirds complete, this project is uniting the community—and even bringing new souls to the Faith. We'll hear the remarkable story of how this church was discovered, the spiritual symbolism behind the Pompeii connection, and the vision for making it a shrine of devotion in America. What began as a job delivering cases quickly turned into a full-blown passion once she stepped inside the lab and saw what technicians were creating. From trimming dies and waxing copings to managing labs, supporting implant surgeries, teaching doctors chairside, and leading removable and implant teams, Helen shares a journey built on curiosity, persistence, and a deep drive to understand the why behind everything in dental technology. Helen talks about working her way through crown and bridge fundamentals before discovering her true passion in removables, dentures, implants, and occlusion. After getting real-world lab experience, she attended dental technology school, studied all six specialties, and continued expanding her knowledge through advanced occlusion training and continuing education. She explains why understanding morphology, materials, and occlusal principles is critical — especially today — and why technicians must know more than just the steps of fabrication. For Helen, dentures and implant prosthetics offer the ultimate puzzle, combining anatomy, function, and problem-solving in ways that keep her constantly engaged. The conversation dives deep into digital dentistry, guided surgery, and removable workflows, with Helen sharing her early experiences launching digital denture and sleep appliance programs long before the workflows were polished. She discusses digital record capture, stackable surgical guides, implant planning, photogrammetry, and where digital still needs improvement — especially for removable prosthetics. While she embraces technology, she stresses that software is only as good as the technician behind it, and that skipping fundamentals creates bigger problems later. Digital is powerful, but it doesn't replace understanding. Education is a major theme throughout the episode. Helen regularly teaches doctors and technicians, speaks at courses, supports live implant conversions, and works with dental students. She emphasizes that many clinicians today lack confidence in dentures and removable workflows, often because fundamentals are under-taught, and she sees technicians as essential partners in closing that gap. She and the hosts discuss how removable cases are frequently rushed, underpaid, and misunderstood — even though they replace a critical body function — and why slowing down, capturing correct records, and returning to basics solves many of the “mystery” failures labs see every day. Helen also shares stories from her time with large organizations and clinical teams, including MicroDental, ClearChoice, Arklign, and implant education centers, where she has worked in technical service, management, training, and quality oversight roles. She talks about networking, mentoring, never burning bridges, and investing in people coming up in the industry. Her approach to both dentistry and life centers around curiosity and accountability — always asking why, always backing decisions with data, and always trying to do the right thing even when no one is looking. Throughout the episode, the energy stays fun and honest, with stories about speeding delivery runs, early digital growing pains, chairside save-the-case moments, and the reality of fixing cases that skipped key steps. Helen brings passion, technical depth, and a strong belief that knowledge should be shared, not guarded. It's a conversation about growth, fundamentals, digital evolution, and why great technicians still matter more than ever. Some movies don't just entertain us — they become part of who we are. Tommy Boy is one of those rare films, blending heart, humor, brotherhood, and horsepower into a story that has resonated with car people for nearly three decades. On this week's episode of The MuscleCar Place, Rob Kibbe has the rare privilege of interviewing Tommy Boy director Peter Segal and master restorer Marc Anghel to tell the unbelievable story of the movie's most famous co-star: the 1967 Plymouth Belvedere GTX. Peter understood car culture from the start and intentionally made the GTX a true character in the film — one that suffered every mishap right alongside Tommy and Richard, earning its place in automotive and movie history. After spending more than 25 years forgotten at a picture car warehouse, the legendary GTX was reunited with Peter at a Barrett-Jackson auction and brought back to life through a concours-level restoration by Marc Anghel. The result is a real-world Tommy Boy car, complete with Callahan Auto decals and subtle nods to its cinematic legacy — and a perfect-score winner at MCACN, the “Pebble Beach of muscle cars.” This episode is a celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, and the way one movie — and one car — can leave a permanent mark on all of us. Randy Hardy, president of Everything Green Properties, joins host Carol Morgan on this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. Hardy discusses past historic restoration projects and the challenges of transforming older buildings with a modern touch. Hardy's passion for historic restoration began as a hobby but quickly blossomed into a full-time focus. Everything Green Properties, LLC., has worked extensively to revitalize older buildings in downtown Powder Springs, a town where Hardy spent a large part of his younger years. “I was having a conversation with my wife almost 15 years ago and I said, ‘You know, somebody needs to go downtown and they need to start buying property because there is huge potential in Powder Springs for revitalizing that little town,” said Hardy. ‘I love it, and I'll never forget.' She looked at me and she said, ‘Well, maybe that person's you.'” Restoration and Revitalization One of Everything Green Properties' first projects in downtown Powder Springs was The Event Station, a run-down gas station that Hardy and his team transformed into a small event facility. He purchased the property without a concept but says that the idea for an event space came to him soon after. The event space now offers a convenient, affordable option for private gatherings, business events and more. “People needed that,” said Hardy. “They needed a lower-cost, beautifully renovated building to have their parties and weddings and all sorts of things.” Everything Green Properties, LLC., is responsible for several other restoration projects in Powder Springs, including an old barber shop that was successfully revitalized as Liz By Design photography studio and an old bank building that was seamlessly turned into a coffee shop. It also worked on restoring a downtown store, breathing new life into the now Collett Country Store. Hardy said, “I actually think it's the jewel of downtown, because it's in the heart and it's also one of the oldest buildings anywhere that still has a Coca-Cola sign painted on the side of a wood frame building.” A recent example of its extensive restoration work can be found at Skint Chestnut Brewing Company and SGC Chicken and Seafood. Hardy bought the property from the DDA with a caved-in roof and restored it into a vibrant business with an outdoor patio and beer garden, that is shared between the two restaurants. Challenges of Historic Restoration Hardy recognizes the obstacles that come with historic restoration, which is why he primarily works with businesses to find their ideal fits within buildings that Everything Green Properties, LLC., has already transformed. Many factors influence the process, such as construction codes and meetings with the offices of the Fire Marshall and building officials, which Hardy and his team are pros at navigating. This approach takes the pressure off business owners wanting to move into an older building and allows Hardy to reinvest in new restoration projects. He emphasizes the importance of working with a knowledgeable team of architects and structural engineers that understand older buildings. The process for restoring and revitalizing them differs greatly from modern buildings. Hardy signs each of his properties with a stamp that includes bringing the outside in– roll up doors and patios. He likes to turn discarded building materials from the restoration into exciting, new features and open up larger buildings with roll-up doors, patios and bigger windows. Hardy said, “Every single patio we have came from a vertical surface that we cut in and made into a brick patio.” Sometimes, when an older building is revitalized, there are unique challenges to bringing the building up to modern code regulations. Hardy points out that if a building is not ADA compliant in its current state, he often must install a new door and a ramp, which can take some careful planning. Other challenges include new internal systems including all new plumbing and el...
