Classic Car Restorations: Reviving Automotive Legends

Why This Episode Is a Must-Listen Are classic cars just vintage machines, or rolling works of art? And are they a smart investment for the future? In "Classic Car Restorations: Reviving Automotive Legends," the Inspired Money panel explores how restoring classic cars is about passion, heritage, and innovation. Whether you're an investor, enthusiast, or simply curious about the intersection of culture and craftsmanship, this episode delivers powerful insights that will change the way you see collectible cars. Meet the Expert Panelists Matt DeLorenzo is a veteran automotive journalist and author with over 40 years of experience, having served as editor-in-chief at Road & Track and Autoweek, and as a senior editor at Automotive News and Kelley Blue Book. A founding juror of the North American Car of the Year awards, he has authored multiple books on iconic American vehicles, from the Corvette to the Dodge brand legacy. His next book, "Mercedes-AMG: Race-bred Performance" will go on sale this November. https://tightwadgarage.com Rupert Banner is a Senior Specialist at Gooding Christie's, bringing over 30 years of experience in the collector car auction industry, including senior roles at Bonhams, Christie's, and Sotheby's. Renowned for his global expertise, record-setting sales, and deep ties to the automotive community, he is a trusted authority on valuation, provenance, and the evolving international classic car market. https://www.goodingco.com Tamara Warren is the founder and CEO of Le Car, a Techstars-backed mobility platform and award-winning automotive journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Car and Driver, Rolling Stone, and over 160 publications. A former transportation editor at The Verge and juror for World Car of the Year, she blends deep industry insight with cultural storytelling, sustainability advocacy, and a passion for automotive design and innovation. https://www.tamarawarren.com William Heynes is the founder of William Heynes Ltd, a world-renowned Jaguar preservation and restoration firm dedicated to early E-Types and rooted in the legacy of his grandfather, Bill Heynes, Jaguar's legendary Chief Engineer behind the iconic XK engine and Le Mans victories. Combining deep mechanical knowledge, period-correct craftsmanship, and a passion for originality, William leads a team committed to restoring Jaguar's most historic cars to concours-level authenticity. https://williamheynes.com Key Highlights: Restorations: Craft, Preservation, or Investment? William Heynes shared how true restoration is “about building the car for what it deserves,” not just tailoring it to the owner's preferences. At his shop, the ultimate goal is authenticity. Sometimes a restoration can involve thousands of hours and years to achieve original perfection. Market Trends and Smart Collecting Rupert Banner demystified current auction markets, noting a shift toward modern collectibles and younger buyers. He stresses the value of detailed provenance and emphasizes: “There is so much more value in just owning something and enjoying it... the car may be a conduit to new opportunities, relationships, and experiences.” Cars as a Reflection of Identity and Community Tamara Warren explored how classic cars are powerful symbols of personal legacy and social connection. "To be a collector is actually to be a steward of a legacy," she noted, highlighting the responsibility and joy of carrying forward the story of each car, brand, and community. The Future: Innovation Meets Heritage Matt DeLorenzo and the panel tackled the balance between preservation and modernization, think EV conversions, restomods, and the ethics of “continuation” models. As Matt put it: “Even if there's the rise of the self-driving car, people look at automobiles as a form of recreation... it's a lifestyle, it's a community that's not going to go anywhere.” Call-to-Action Here's your one assignment for the week: Find a car that has personal meaning to you, whether it's a car you grew up with, saw in a movie, or admired from afar, and dig into its story. Look it up, read about it, maybe even check the market. You might discover a connection that turns into a future project, or at the very least, a deeper appreciation for what makes these vehicles legendary.  Find the Inspired Money channel on YouTube or listen to Inspired Money in your favorite podcast player. Randy Hardy, president of Everything Green Properties, joins host Carol Morgan on this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. Hardy discusses past historic restoration projects and the challenges of transforming older buildings with a modern touch. Hardy's passion for historic restoration began as a hobby but quickly blossomed into a full-time focus. Everything Green Properties, LLC., has worked extensively to revitalize older buildings in downtown Powder Springs, a town where Hardy spent a large part of his younger years. “I was having a conversation with my wife almost 15 years ago and I said, ‘You know, somebody needs to go downtown and they need to start buying property because there is huge potential in Powder Springs for revitalizing that little town,” said Hardy. ‘I love it, and I'll never forget.' She looked at me and she said, ‘Well, maybe that person's you.'” Restoration and Revitalization One of Everything Green Properties' first projects in downtown Powder Springs was The Event Station, a run-down gas station that Hardy and his team transformed into a small event facility. He purchased the property without a concept but says that the idea for an event space came to him soon after. The event space now offers a convenient, affordable option for private gatherings, business events and more. “People needed that,” said Hardy. “They needed a lower-cost, beautifully renovated building to have their parties and weddings and all sorts of things.” Everything Green Properties, LLC., is responsible for several other restoration projects in Powder Springs, including an old barber shop that was successfully revitalized as Liz By Design photography studio and an old bank building that was seamlessly turned into a coffee shop. It also worked on restoring a downtown store, breathing new life into the now Collett Country Store. Hardy said, “I actually think it's the jewel of downtown, because it's in the heart and it's also one of the oldest buildings anywhere that still has a Coca-Cola sign painted on the side of a wood frame building.” A recent example of its extensive restoration work can be found at Skint Chestnut Brewing Company and SGC Chicken and Seafood. Hardy bought the property from the DDA with a caved-in roof and restored it into a vibrant business with an outdoor patio and beer garden, that is shared between the two restaurants. Challenges of Historic Restoration Hardy recognizes the obstacles that come with historic restoration, which is why he primarily works with businesses to find their ideal fits within buildings that Everything Green Properties, LLC., has already transformed. Many factors influence the process, such as construction codes and meetings with the offices of the Fire Marshall and building officials, which Hardy and his team are pros at navigating. This approach takes the pressure off business owners wanting to move into an older building and allows Hardy to reinvest in new restoration projects. He emphasizes the importance of working with a knowledgeable team of architects and structural engineers that understand older buildings. The process for restoring and revitalizing them differs greatly from modern buildings. Hardy signs each of his properties with a stamp that includes bringing the outside in– roll up doors and patios. He likes to turn discarded building materials from the restoration into exciting, new features and open up larger buildings with roll-up doors, patios and bigger windows. Hardy said, “Every single patio we have came from a vertical surface that we cut in and made into a brick patio.” Sometimes, when an older building is revitalized, there are unique challenges to bringing the building up to modern code regulations. Hardy points out that if a building is not ADA compliant in its current state, he often must install a new door and a ramp, which can take some careful planning. Other challenges include new internal systems including all new plumbing and el...

They shoehorn a brief Sportscast about the emerging gambling scandal involving Shohei Ohtani, lamenting the bad side effects of gambling while also hoping to get some gambling sponsorships for the Fantasy Albums Draft. Speaking of which: Ian is killing Steven once again in the Fantasy Albums Draft (10:47), and Steven is thinking about firing his general manager (i.e. himself).Next the guys review the new album by Waxahatchee, Tigers Blood, which Steven likes more than Ian (16:36). They also talk about two other big singer-songwriter albums out today, Bright Future by Adrianne Lenker and Bite Down by Rosali (33:46). In the mailbag, a listener asks whether Steven's neighbors like his patio music, and then another listener asks about Indiecast's favorite albums to play on airplanes. In Recommendation Corner (54:32), Ian talks about the new album from Bedbug while Steven recommends the comeback record from Restorations and a new archival concert release from Bruce Springsteen.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
