I'm excited to share Episode 50 of “Talking At The Diner!" I wanted to ask a heavy hitter to be my 50th guest on the show and when I think of heavy hitters in the Philadelphia music community, my guest really fits the bill not only in terms of his experiences and accomplishments, but he's literally a heavy hitter sitting behind the drum kit for Philly rock legends The Hooters. David Uosikkinen was raised in Levittown and came of age in the early days of FM rock radio. If you are of a certain age in this part of the world, you already know of the Hooters rise from local heroes to international touring artists. Numerous songs such as "All You Zombies," "And We Danced," "Day By Day," and "Hanging On A Heartbeat" were ubiquitous on radio stations like WMMR. As an aspiring musician growing up in Delaware, it was very motivating to see a Philadelphia band on MTV and performing at Live Aid. And even after 45 years as a band, the Hooters continue to tour and even release new music to this day.My personal connection with Dave Uosikkinen dates back to when I was in my early 20's fronting the Beat Clinic, the band that would eventually morph into the Caulfields. We were finalists in a national battle of the bands called the Energizer Rock 'n' Roll Challenge. David was a judge at the battle of the bands and although the Beat Clinic did not win, his words of encouragement to me in a my agony of defeat moment were inspirational to me and played a big part in motivating me to keep on pushing. In the years since to end of Covid, David has invited me to be part of In The Pocket, an all-star collective of musicians who honor the musical history of Philadelphia with tribute recordings and raucous shows. I was excited to get a chance to sit down with David at Minella's Diner in Wayne, PA for what ended up being an amazing conversation. We talked about his origin story as a musician, the genesis of the Hooters, and there's also an entertaining story about an encounter with Ace Frehley from Kiss. I am confident you will enjoy this episode!~ JKF
Stan Lynch shared stories from his early days with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, including playing Live Aid and recording with the iconic band. He also talked about backing Bob Dylan and spending time with him at a Frank Sinatra show and shared insights into his longtime friendship and collaborations with Don Henley.

Paul Rappaport enjoyed a storied thirty-three-year career at Columbia Records, where he was instrumental in the careers of everyone from Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd to The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello to Billy Joel, Judas Priest to Alice In Chains, and many, many more. The music business from the late 60s through the 90s was an exciting time that mirrored the music and the musicians making it. It was also a time of new and creative ideas on how to market this groundbreaking cultural phenomenon. Eccentric characters were everywhere, and often the managers, promoters, disc jockeys, and record company staff were just as big a show as the performers themselves.
Joe Conklin has been a constant in Philadelphia radio for more than 30 years. He's known for his spot-on impressions of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, Barack Obama, Elizabeth Warren, Allen Iverson, and Charles Barkley, among others. Conklin is also one of the most sought after corporate banquet speakers in the area. His stand-up routine is legendary, as he's skewered some of the country's top politicians, pro athletes, sports executives, and film stars, sometimes to their faces. And each time he is fearless, uncanny, and hilarious. Joe is a twelve-time AIR award winner for Excellence in Broadcasting and his work has been recognized by the Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards. He's worked with some of the nation's most recognized performers including Kevin Hart, Tim Allen, and Ray Romano. His TV credits include: NFL Films Presents, NBC Sports, Entertainment Tonight, NBA on TNT, ESPN: Baseball Tonight, Good Day Philadelphia, The Q Show, Comcast Sportsnet, Finder's Keepers, America's Funniest People.

As a spiritual descendent of iconic women in rock such as Patti Smith and Joan Jett, ZouZou's Philadelphia-based band also embodies elements of kindred spirits of the '90s and beyond – like PJ Harvey and The Kills, with more than a sprinkling of '60s Garage Rock and Soul. Their primal sonic attack spreads a message of perseverance through trials of love, loss and letting go.
Alan has been into music since he was eleven years old. Then that first appearance of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan changed his life forever. So many of his peers have the same exact story. Alan learned by ear from listening to records and he earned so much from Ringo Starr (Sir Richard Starkey). He started gigging in the late '60s, working in the club date field in the New York Tri-State area from 1975 to 1983. He played with many bands in the NYC club scene in the late '70s and early '80s. Most people don't know this, but in the mid-'90s Alan dropped out of the public eye to play drums for Broadway show tours. Until 2017, He's enjoyed playing these rock/pop-type productions like Rent, Aida, Hairspray, The Who's Tommy, and Rock of Ages.

We couldn't get enough of Rob Stoner and his stories so we brought him back for a follow-up.
Rob Stoner has an amazing life making music. I met Rob around 2010 when we both recorded tracks on a Robert Gordon record produced by Quention Jones. I found him to be a a genuinely good dude and super bassist. I found out that session that he played bass on Don McLean's hit American Pie but he also sings back up with the track. He was the band leader of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue. Which was a stellar band the included Rob, Nick Ronson. Howie Wyeth,Scarlet Rivera.
It's our 300th episode! And Dan sits down with Philly music legend David Uosikkinen, drummer for The Hooters, founder of In the Pocket, and countless other projects. Dave talks about growing up in Levittown, seeing Buddy Rich as a kid, his first drum sets, South Street and the scene in the late 70s and early 80s, and how a one-time session with Eric Bazillian and Rob Hyman in 1980 turned into a 40+ year career (and still going) as The Hooters. Dan and David discuss some of the great Philadelphia musicians that Dave has worked with (In the Pocket is a huge "who's-who"), folk like Pete Donnely, Charlie Ingui and his late brother Richie of Soul Survivors, Patty Smyth, and more. It's a non-stop ride, and David's enthusiasm and energy for playing music seems in no way to have slowed with age. Thanks to all the listeners and supporters for helping us get to 300 episodes!

Hello everyone! My guest today is Hooters drummer and long-time band member David Uosikkinen. David and the band recently recorded and released a new album, “Rocking & Swing,” that took the band back to their original ska/reggae sound from the early eighties. The band of forty-plus years has just wrapped up their European/US tour, their first lengthy tour in decades. David has a documentary, “Heart of The Beat,” that premiered in October 2023 at Philadelphia's longest-running indie film festival. I've seen the film and for as long as I've been a fan of David & The Hooters, I learned more than what I knew. And, there's cool photos and footage. I like its casual and honest narrative. Let's welcome David to Drum Channel to talk about the incredible success of the band, the documentary, his solo project “In The Pocket” and more!

This Week I Flashback.......The Soul Survivors, originally from New York City, grew up listening to the R & B groups of the 1950's. The sounds of groups like the Moonglows, Heartbeats, and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers had a great influence on brothers Charlie and Rich Ingui. With various street corner groups, they developed their vocal skills. While in high school, Charlie joined the vocal group from Queens, N.Y. the Dedications. When, a year later the group's lead singer decided to leave, brother Rich was recruited. While performing at clubs in the New York area, they found themselves at the mercy of various house bands and decided to find a group of musicians who would become permanent members of the group therefore creating a self contained unit. The group would be renamed THE SOUL SURVIVORS.Shortly thereafter, the group began to build a strong following, playing venues in Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Enjoying great success in Philadelphia, they attracted the attention of record producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Into the recording studio they went, emerging with " Expressway To Your Heart " a song that would climb to #3 on Billboard's R&B chart and #4 on it's Top 100 list. The success of " Expressway " became Gamble and Huff's first "crossover" hit when it began to be played on both black and white radio stations. It's success enabled Gamble and Huff to reach the large audiences they sought in order to bring their " Sound Of Philadelphia " to the mass Market. In polls taken by both the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia's City Paper, " Expressway" was voted the number one record ever to come out of Philadelphia. "Expressway " was followed by two other chart records, "Explosion In My Soul" and " Mission Impossible". Their first album, released in 1968, was " When The Whistle Blows ". A second LP, on Atco Records, called "Take Another Look" appeared in 1969.During this time, the group toured extensively throughout the U.S. appearing with many different types of artists...everyone from Jackie Wilson, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles to Janis Joplin, the Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Sly and the Family Stone and countless others. In 1974, the Soul Survivors reunited with Gamble and Huff to record their self titled album "The Soul Survivors" on TSOP Records. It was written and performed in a style that would define the unique sound of The Soul Survivors. The album produced "City Of Brotherly Love" which would show up on Billboard's R&B Top 100 and become the group's fourth charted outing. The Soul Survivors recorded new music and covers several years ago, most recently working with David Uosikkinen of The Hooters and his project "In the Pocket" which is paying tribute to the vast catalog of music created in Philadelphia.© 2023 All Rights Reserved© 2023 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud
On Episode 25 of "Talking At The Diner," I ventured into the outer Philly burbs to Phoenixville, PA to meet up with singer songwriter Alexis Cunningham, a powerful and charismatic performer who has done some very cool things in her still-ascending career. In 2022, she appeared on American Song Contest on NBC, where she performed her song “Working On A Miracle” and completed against some serious musical heavyweights like Jewel and Macy Gray. She's also developed a long-lasting creative partnership with Eric Bazilian from Philly rock legends the Hooters and gauging by the last time I saw her perform, Alexis writing the best songs of her career. Trust me when I tell you she's got songs.I actually got an opportunity last year to sing back-ups on a stripped down version of "Working On A Miracle" with Alexis and Joey DiTullio during a show with David Uosikkinen's In The Pocket. Check it out HERE. I diner'd up with Alexis at the brilliantly named “YOUR MOM'S PLACE,” located at the far end of Phoenixville's bustling downtown. I had a great time catching up with her and I hope you enjoy our conversation!

The group would be renamed THE SOUL SURVIVORS. Shortly thereafter, the group began to build a strong following, playing venues in Atlantic City and Philadelphia. The album produced "City Of Brotherly Love" which would show up on Billboard's R&B Top 100 and become the group's fourth charted outing.Through the years, the Soul Survivors have continued to provide audiences with high energy performances and music that is timeless and authentic ,appearing with 60's contemporaries Felix Cavaliere's Rascals. the Turtles, the Association, as well as fellow TSOP artists Harold Melvin's Bluenotes,Billy Paul, the Intruders, Russell Thompkins' Stylistics and others. The group's CD is called " Heart Full of Soul ", produced by Grammy nominated producers Jimmy Bralower and Johnny Gale. The Soul Survivors recorded new music and covers several years ago, most recently working with David Uosikkinen of The Hooters and his project "In the Pocket" which is paying tribute to the vast catalog of music created in Philadelphia.© 2023 All Rights Reserved© 2023 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Radio @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBAS Audacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud
