William reveals that this novel began as a memoir, sharing the details that stem from his own life (like the cottage rules!). He also talks about the chaotic messiness of blended families, his recent open-heart surgery, and his day job in cyber security. Finally, he shares his best advice for aspiring and first-time authors. Purchase on Bookshop: https://bit.ly/45gkLMCShare, rate, & review the podcast, and follow Zibby on Instagram @zibbyowens! Today on the show, author William Dameron discusses his book, The Lie, in which he gives an unflinching and self-aware account of the impact his closet had on his wife and family. He shares how his lying to hide his sexuality affected his wife: “I could see what my gaslighting was doing to her, it was making her question her value and her beauty. That’s why it was so important when I realized the collateral damage that was happening that I needed to come clean.” His hope in writing the book, is to spare other people from the pain of closets, mixed orientation marriages and divorce. “We are not the first generation of queer people who have found ourselves trapped in a straight marriage,” he writes, “but please god let us be the last.”

“Do you know me?” the email began, sparking tremors of fear that turned into a full quake of panic when William Dameron discovered that his selfie had been stolen by strangers. On social networks and dating sites, his image and identity—a forty-year-old straight white male—had been used to hook countless women into believing in lies of love and romance. Was it all an ironic cosmic joke? Almost a decade prior, William himself had been living a lie that had lasted for more than twenty years. His secret? He was a gay man, a fact he hid from his wife and two daughters for almost as long as he had hidden it from himself. In “The Lie: A Memoir of Two Marriages, Catfishing & Coming Out,” William confronts steroid addiction, the shame and homophobia of his childhood, the sledgehammer of secrets that slowly tore his marriage apart and his love for a gay father of three that would once again challenge the boundaries of trust. Join us for a conversation with author William Dameron in this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large” on WBAI.
