Dental Digest
Zirconia, Digital Impressions, and Restorative Accuracy with Dr. Michael Skramstad

Join Elevated GP: www.theelevatedgp.com Register for the live meeting: https://www.theelevatedgp.com/ElevationSummit Download the Injection Molding Guide: https://www.theelevatedgp.com/IMpdf  In Part 2 of this two-part conversation on Dental Digest, Dr. Melissa Seibert continues her discussion with digital dentistry educator and CAD/CAM expert Dr. Michael Skramstad. While Part 1 focused on the foundations of digital workflows, this episode explores the clinical nuances where digital dentistry either enhances precision or quietly introduces risk. The conversation begins with one of the most under-recognized challenges in restorative dentistry: the accuracy of digital bite registrations and full-arch scanning. Dr. Skramstad explains that while intraoral scanners are highly capable, their accuracy is heavily dependent on clinician awareness and workflow management. In cases where patients struggle to find a repeatable bite position, digital or analog records may both become unreliable. In these scenarios, techniques such as deprogramming with a leaf gauge and capturing an open CR bite digitally can improve reproducibility and clinical outcomes. DDP SkramstadP2 First Edit Dr. Skramstad then discusses one of the most important factors affecting digital impressions: margin management. While scanner technology has improved dramatically, the accuracy of digital impressions still depends primarily on the quality of the tooth preparation and effective hemostasis. He emphasizes that meticulous preparation design remains the single most important determinant of restorative fit, regardless of the digital system used. DDP SkramstadP2 First Edit The discussion also explores practical strategies for managing subgingival margins. Techniques such as ViscoStat Clear for hemostasis, selective use of retraction cord, and careful isolation protocols can significantly improve scan accuracy and margin visualization. Importantly, workflow decisions may differ depending on whether restorations are fabricated in-house or sent to a laboratory, since file formats such as STL lack color information and can make margin identification more difficult for technicians. DDP SkramstadP2 First Edit The episode then shifts to material selection in contemporary restorative dentistry, particularly the evolving role of zirconia. Early zirconia restorations were often criticized for poor esthetics, but recent material innovations have dramatically improved translucency and optical properties. Dr. Skramstad explains why modern zirconia systems—such as multi-layered zirconia materials—are increasingly used in both posterior and selected anterior applications, while still maintaining the exceptional strength that originally drove zirconia's adoption. DDP SkramstadP2 First Edit The conversation also addresses: • The clinical differences between bonding vs. cementing zirconia restorations • How preparation design influences retention and restorative longevity • The impact of speed sintering on zirconia optical and mechanical properties • When digital workflows simplify restorative dentistry—and when they introduce hidden complexity One of the most important themes reinforced throughout the discussion is that digital dentistry does not replace clinical fundamentals—it magnifies them. Technology can improve efficiency and accuracy, but it cannot compensate for poor preparation design, inadequate isolation, or imprecise clinical technique. For dentists exploring or expanding digital workflows, this episode provides a grounded perspective on how to integrate digital tools responsibly while maintaining the biological and mechanical principles that underpin successful restorative dentistry. Topics discussed include: • Digital bite registration and centric relation records • Margin management in digital impressions • Hemostasis techniques for intraoral scanning • STL vs PLY file formats in digital workflows • Zirconia vs lithium disilicate restorations • Speed sintering and modern zirconia materials Whether you're already practicing chairside CAD/CAM dentistry or simply evaluating digital systems for your practice, this conversation offers a thoughtful look at how technology intersects with clinical judgment in modern restorative dentistry.

Today. On WnS Radio. Dionne, Rebecca and I got together with Crystal hesser of @spin_up_girl to discuss all things art and textured yarns. Crystal spins a myriad of art yarns that she often sells in her booths at various fibre events around her area. A prolific spinner, Crystal has written for PLY magazine, as well as other publications, and she teaches how to make these yarns to eager students. Some of the topics we got into today around art and textured yarns are nuanced, multi factorial and affect so much of our creative lives. We discussed why textured yarns are still so mysterious, even with all the information about them out there. Crystal shares with us some tricks and tips to dealing with excess twist, as well as, who comes into her booths looking specifically for these yarns. And lastly, we got into a conversation about swatching. Unlike our conventional yarns, which we talk a lot about using in this community, often textured and art yarns are the end product. When we want to showcase them, it can sometimes feel a bit intimidating, so we started to delve into what this process might look like. Video of Crystal using a Spindle to manage twist in textured yarns hereWe will have Crystal back on the show in the new year to continue this conversation because we clearly ran out of time today! Data Beats Gut Decisions – Centralizing purchasing and inventory data allows contractors to be proactive, avoid last-minute supply runs, and unlock supplier discounts. Dead Stock Is a Hidden Tax – Unused parts in trucks and warehouses quietly erode cash flow. Ply's system helps uncover and eliminate it. Billable Hours Are Gold – Every supply house run can cost six figures annually across multiple techs. Smarter inventory keeps techs in the field. AI Is the Future of the Trades – From voice-driven field requests to automated replenishment, AI is reshaping how contractors manage their operations.

1-Ply vs 2-Ply Snowmobile Tracks: The Real DifferenceEpisode Summary:In this episode of Snowmobile Trail Talk, Chris dives into one of the most debated topics in snowmobiling — 1-ply vs 2-ply tracks. If you've wondered which is better for performance, durability, and value, this episode has the answers. Learn the history, how to tell them apart, and which stud kits pair best with each type. What We CoverHow 1-ply tracks started and why Ski-Doo introduced them in 2008.Which brands use 1-ply vs 2-ply — and why Polaris sticks with 2-ply.The quick “window test” to identify your track.Myths about track types, including Ice Ripper misconceptions.Real pros and cons of each type.Which stud kits are best for each.A Quick HistoryIn 2008, Ski-Doo launched the XP chassis — light, agile, and featuring the 1-ply track to cut weight. Yamaha and Arctic Cat followed on select models, while Polaris stayed with 2-ply tracks for durability. How to Tell the DifferenceBoth look similar, but there's an easy check: look through the small window between the track's outer edge and center belt. One row of cords = 1-ply. Two rows = 2-ply.See our full guide here: How to Tell the Difference Between a 1-Ply and a 2-Ply Track.Pros & Cons1-Ply Pros:Slightly lighter, may reduce rolling resistance.1-Ply Cons:Less durable on rough terrain. Shorter studded lifespan.2-Ply Pros:Stronger, handles impacts better, lasts longer. Often cheaper upfront.2-Ply Cons:Slightly heavier, though most riders won't notice.Chris's verdict: durability matters more than minimal weight savings — he rides 2-ply.Stud Kit RecommendationsFor 1-ply tracks, use the Top Gun SP Kit — oversized heads and backers boost support by 25%.For 2-ply, go with the Top Gun II Kit — built for thousands of miles of strength. You can run the SP on 2-ply for max grip, but avoid the II on 1-ply to prevent damage. Why It MattersOn paper, 1-ply seems faster and more efficient, but most riders won't feel the difference. The durability gap is huge — a studded 2-ply with the right Stud Kit can last 10,000 miles, while a studded 1-ply might last about 5,000. That's a big factor in cost and reliability.Get the Right SetupNot sure which track you have? Use our Stud Kit Application Finder to identify your stock track type and compatible kits.Explore all our Snowmobile Studs, including:Top Gun SP Kit — for single-ply tracks.Top Gun II Kit — for 2-ply tracks.Final ThoughtsChoosing between 1-ply and 2-ply comes down to riding style and priorities. If you want maximum longevity and peace of mind, go 2-ply with the right studs. If weight is your top concern, 1-ply can work — just reinforce it properly. For the full range of Snowmobile Studs and kits, visit FastTracTraction.com and get your sled ready for the season.

We use articulators to help ‘mimic' our patient's jaw movements, to ultimately do less adjustments/revisions in the future. But are digital articulators there yet? Or is analog king? Or is digital dentistry just flashy tech with no real-world benefits? Can a virtual articulator truly match the movements of your patient's jaw? Is a CBCT really better than a facebow—and WHEN should you use which? In this cutting-edge episode with Dr. Seth Atkins, we dive into the world of digital articulation—exploring how tools like virtual articulators, CBCT alignment, and 3D-printed provisionals are transforming clinical workflows. You'll learn how to combine analog wisdom with digital precision, improve lab communication, and make full-mouth rehabs more predictable and efficient than ever. This is the progress powering tomorrow. Allen Hall: Andrew and Brad, welcome to the show. Thanks for having us. Thank you. Well, we're gonna start off by talking about carbon protrusions, because that's the focus of your technology, title IX composites, and there's been some recent advancements that are really fascinating, but I, I kind of wanna go back a minute because carbon pull protrusions are the future, even though we're still making some fiberglass blades that'll have a limited lifespan. We're gonna be moving to carbon protrusions because the strength and the weight. And the cost, simplicity of it, uh, just makes carbon protrusions the future. And Tightline Composites has been key in that mold of making these, uh, carbon planks and getting 'em out to industry. I. But one of the big problems with any sort of carbon plank product is it [00:01:00] usually has a peel ply. And Andrew, you wanna talk about what that peel ply does and why it's used and why we need it.  Andrew Davis: You really need that surface energy created by removing the peel ply to, to get an effective bond as you're building your spark cap. And so for years, this has just been considered a necessary evil. Uh, in terms of creating, creating that effective bond. And, and that's, that's the world we've lived in for the last 10 years.  Allen Hall: And a peel ply for those who are not deep into the composite industry. Peel, ply is a removable. Ply a fabric that's that's applied over the carbon on the outside and it's kind of thicker and it has, uh, this kind of rough and surface. So when you build the protrusion, you got these two layers of this peel ply on either side, and it travels with the product. So as, uh, tight line sends out product, these, these peel plys go with it. [00:02:00] And ideally when they get to the factory, the, the people on the floor. Pull this peel play off and it's not fun to peel off one and two, it's kind of invisible. So you can forget that it's there and install it in ablaze. And Joel, you have seen that in the field. You've seen protrusions where they have the ply still attached.  Joel Saxum: Yeah, it's, it's like, um, Alan, we saw one of the other day too, where it was like there was still a coating on a down conductor, right? So like, if you. If you try to embed this product, the, the idea behind peel and the peel ply is you peel the peel ply, and now you have a prepped surface that can be chemically and mechanically bonded to easier or in, in, in, in a much better way, as designed. So if you forget to pull that off, now you have a structural element inside the PLA or inside of whatever you may be building in composites. That doesn't have the ability to bond properly to that protrusion, to that carbon plank or to that glass plank. Uh, and if that's the case, you lose, I can't [00:03:00] put a number to it. Right. But you lose an immense  Andrew Davis: amount of structural strength. And Joel, just to underline your point, we've heard from customers who will remain nameless that it is, it, it happens that, that this will get caught on scan. Uh, when the blade is completely done, and then the entire blade has to be scrapped. There's no, there's no fixing it.

The ASX 200 started the week giving back 80 points to 8158 (1%) as the bank rally faded post WBC results. Slightly underwhelming and lack of growth to blame. WBC fell 3.0% taking CBA down 1.6% and the Big Bank Basket down to $265.29 (1.7%). MQG followed the other lower down 1.8% ahead of numbers Friday. Other financials gave up early gains, with RPL and XYZ, two of the only winners. REITs also slipped led by GMG down 2.2% and MGR off 0.9% with industrials also weaker. Retail sagged, PMV down 3.4% and APE off 3.1% with MYR down 3.5%. Defensives such as TLS slid 1.1% and REA down 1.8%. Resources held up better with BHP down only 0.9% and RIO off 0.9% despite rising Iron ore prices in Singapore. Gold miners were mixed, GOR jumped 9.4% on the takeover by Goldfields, NST up 0.4% and EVN up 2.1% with BGL rallying 2.2%. Lithium stocks were flat, LYC up 1.8% and oil and gas stocks crumbling in the face of oils fall. WDS down 3.6% and STO off 4.0%. Uranium stocks mixed, NXG down 4.6% and BOE up 0.8%. In corporate news, TYR pulled out of SMP talks, PLY dumped after CEO retires wounded. RWC warned on tariffs and fell 2.4% with EDV forecasting flat to modest retail sales growth. Nothing on the economic front. In Asia, China and Japan closed for a holiday. 10-year yields pushing higher to 4.26%.Want to invest with Marcus Today? In this episode, Sasha dives into the frustrating experience of leftover singles after plying, a common headache for spinners. She shares three effective strategies to ensure you never face this dilemma again. First, she explains her favorite method—working from multiple storage bobbins—which helps to minimize leftovers. She also introduces the concept of a plying bracelet, a handy technique that lets you easily ply your leftover yarn into a two-ply. Finally, for those creating three-ply yarns, she discusses chain plying as a way to use leftover singles. These three techniques will help you make the most of your singles and eliminate waste when plying. Mentioned in this episode: The Sheepspot Podcast Episode 11: Plying for consistency Episode 12: Be Kind, Rewind Episode 104: How Much Ply Twist?

Aras Pranckevičius reminisces about his formative years at Unity, detailing the transition from a Mac-only platform to a gaming revolution with the advent of the iPhone. He critiques Unity's package management and advocates for keeping core functionality within the main codebase. Aras favors text-based programming languages, given their clarity compared to visual nodes. He delves into 3D file formats, underscoring the resilience of simpler formats like OBJ and PLY, and prefers GLTF over the complex USD, which lacks a clear specification. Aras introduces Gaussian splatting as a more editable and understandable alternative to NeRF, outlining his work on optimizing splat data size. He acknowledges the transformative impact of AI on programming but expects it will take years for the dust to settle. Aras ends by recognizing the significant advancements of Blender in the open-source space and expresses cautious optimism for the future of 3D on the web with technologies like WebGPU…==== Have any comments or questions? A day when one has not pushed oneself to the limit seems a damaged, damaging day, a sinful day. Not so!
