(CW: includes a discussion of violence and sexual assault)Mary Beth O'Connor is the author of the new memoir, “From Junkie to Judge: One Woman'sTriumph Over Trauma and Addiction.” The abuse and traumas she experienced as a child, including sexual assaults, led Mary Beth into substance use disorders. She started drinking at 12years old and by 17 she was shooting up methamphetamine. When Mary Beth got sober at age 32, 12-step was not a fit. She decided to develop her own way of recovering, incorporating ideas from multiple sources to build a secular recovery plan that works for her. Six years into her recovery, she went to law school, then worked at a big firm before being appointed a federal Administrative Law Judge. The programs Mary Beth draws on include:Women For Sobriety -- https://womenforsobriety.org/Life Ring Secular Recovery -- https://lifering.org/She Recovers -- https://sherecovers.org/Music Minute features Pharell's “Happy.” Check out the video for “24 hours of Happy.” -https://24hoursofhappy.com/Find Mary Beth and the book at: https://junkietojudge.com/On IG: @marybetho_This episode is sponsored by the sober entrepreneurs at Sour Humanoid vinegar! If you've evaluating your relationship with alcohol and looking for support as you stop drinking there are many paths to sobriety and sources of support for an alcohol-free life. The most important thing you can do as you stop drinking is to find the approach, tools and resources that are the right fit for you. For decades Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in 1935 as a mutual aid fellowship for abstinence-based recovery through its spiritually-inclined Twelve Step program, was the best-known program recommended to people who struggle with alcohol use disorder. Popular culture rarely depicts other paths to sobriety in TV and movies, but there are many programs and approaches that have successfully helped people stop drinking that are alternatives to the AA twelve-step addiction recovery model, including Women For Sobriety, SMART Recovery, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, sober coaching and online courses, programs and communities. In this episode, I've teamed up with Gill Tietz from the Sober Powered Podcast, Dave Wilson, host of the One For the Road Podcast, and Eric Zimmer, host of The One You Feed Podcast to talk about our different paths to sobriety and the support we chose to stop drinking and navigate life happily alcohol-free. If you have a limiting belief, beliefs that is putting the pedal on the brake, you know, it's like having the pedal on, on fast forward and went on the brake. It just doesn't work. Right. That's the first concept. Then the second concept for me is like a subconscious mind is like that huge warehouse. Where everything is stored, everything you've heard, you've seen, you felt you intuition everything, the red flags, but that never necessarily all came to your conscious mind because you would go crazy if everything would come to your conscious mind.~ Janylene The beliefs about change are very important. So as a society, we carry beliefs about age. We carry beliefs. Change. And if you mix the two together, It's it's, it's very normal that people will come to this type of work with some kind of a deep rooted, seated beliefs about age and about change. ~Janylene Concerned about your drinking. https://womenforsobriety.org/ (Check out Women For Sobriety. ) Support this podcast
