Kezia and Kim are so excited to welcome Gill Tietz, from Sober Powered Media. You may know Gill from her own podcast: Sober Powered, where she takes complex ideas about our brain and bodies and explains them in her own simplified words. Gill talks with us today about how alcohol impacts us emotionally while we are in active states of addiction. At the same time, the after effects and the withdrawal alter our moods for a long time once alcohol is removed. Gill explains how drinking can make us feel relaxed at first, which is part of its addictive quality. It tricks us into thinking it is reducing our anxiety when it is in fact having the opposite effect. The ladies discuss the difference between an anxiety disorder and alcohol induced anxiety. They also talk about how to manage anxiety without alcohol in early sobriety. Further, when one removes alcohol, sometimes mental health illnesses are revealed, and treatment is often needed. Remember to talk to your doctor if you are struggling with anxiety or depression while drinking or during any part of your sobriety. The most important thing you can do as you stop drinking is to find the approach, tools and resources that are the right fit for you. For decades Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in 1935 as a mutual aid fellowship for abstinence-based recovery through its spiritually-inclined Twelve Step program, was the best-known program recommended to people who struggle with alcohol use disorder. Gillian Tietz is the creator and host of the Sober Powered podcast and works as a biochemist in the Boston area. Gill struggled with alcohol for about ten years until she quit drinking in 2019. Since then, she has dedicated herself to learning about alcohol's influence on the brain and how it can cause addiction. She used that knowledge to free herself from her shame about being unable to control her drinking. Today, she educates and empowers others to assess their relationship with alcohol. Gill became suicidal whenever she was very drunk. She would drink, pass out, jolt awake at 2 or 3 am and force herself to lie awake for the rest of the night, hating herself and thinking very scary thoughts. Gill started most days by looking at herself in the mirror and repeating “I hate you” repeatedly until she made herself cry. Eventually, the suicidal thoughts became so strong that Gill feared she might do something about it. That's when she made a point to change her life for good. At 18, Gill had her first drink, but it wasn't until four years later, in grad school, that drinking became a regular occurrence. Drinking was normalized in her workplace culture, so she believed drinking with her lab colleagues was normal. Within a year, she began to drink daily, blackouts happened multiple times per week, and she was going to work hungover. In 2019, Gill quit drinking and became dedicated to learning about alcohol's effect on the brain and how it causes addiction. On today's episode of The Addicted Mind Podcast, Duane speaks with Gill Tietz, a biochemist and the host of the Sober Powered Podcast. Gill shares her alcohol addiction journey, the connection between our brain chemistry and addiction, and how she used her knowledge of science to achieve sobriety, change her way of thinking, and ultimately change her life.Gill had her first drink at 18 years old and, after feeling shame and guilt, she decided not to drink anymore after that. Four years later, when she was at grad school, she started drinking with her colleagues. Having dealt with bullying and trauma early in life, Gill just wanted to fit in. Once she had just one drink, she thought it was magic and the best feeling in the world. Best of all, she finally felt included. Within a year, she became a daily drinker. Drinking was a huge part of the culture of the lab she worked at so she thought it was normal behavior. By the second year, she was drinking a lot more with 80% or more alcohol in her drinks. She was blacking out several nights a week and going to work massively hungover. Towards the end, she started having several mental health issues, hating herself, and becoming very suicidal. Finally, Gill braved through her alcohol issue by accepting reality and looking at her drinking for what it was versus what she was hoping it could be someday. By removing emotions from the equation, she started to look at things from a more scientific perspective. And if they add up enough, your risk of having a problem is very, very high.
