Throughout human history new parents had support with their newborns around the clock from their friends and family. Now, most parents don't have friends and family who are able to help overnight, and postpartum doulas are an option for nighttime support to help you get more rest. However, if you are a parent looking for someone who is knowledgeable and comfortable with nurturing biologically normal sleep and lactation then it's important you hire the right professional. In this episode, I'm joined by Alex King, a postpartum doula who exclusively does overnight support. We talk about what a postpartum doula is and how they are different from night nurses and newborn care specialists. We share some questions parents can ask to get a good sense of the doulas lactation knowledge and comfort with supporting normal sleep and an attachment-based approach to sleep. We discussed what some red flags and green flags might be to show where a doula is on the same page as them and where they may not be aligned. It's all about finding the right fit and as a parent, being clear about what you are looking for. Alex shares some of the ways her support helps parents create more of a set nighttime, helping circadian rhythm develop. And she reminds us that you are inviting a person into a very personal time and space so it's important that you are really comfortable with them. I hope this episode will give you some ideas if you want to hire a postpartum doula for nighttime support whether you are pregnant with your first baby or looking ahead to a second baby or more.  About Alex Alex King is a certified postpartum doula in Los Angeles California who specializes in working with families overnight. She is passionate about setting up babies, mamas, and families for success in the delicate postpartum period so they can enjoy the magic a new little one brings. Connect with Alex Instagram: @doula.alex.kingConnect with KimInstagram: instagram.com/intuitive_parenting_dcFacebook:  facebook.com/intuitiveparentingdcLearn more about working with Kim: https://intuitiveparentingdc.com/

Have you considered quitting therapy? Well, it might actually be a great idea. In this episode, we explore the idea that therapy isn't necessarily a lifelong commitment but rather a dynamic tool to be used when needed. We debate constant introspection may do more harm than good, questioning the fine line between healthy self-awareness and potentially damaging over-analysis. We chat with our friend, Karan Brar, to explore the motivations behind self-reflection, investigating whether it serves as a genuine quest for personal growth or merely as a coping mechanism to navigate the psychological intricacies surrounding the fear of being perceived as flawed, examining societal pressures and the internal narratives that drive this apprehension. Darrell Castle shares his take on the wildfires that have and continue to devastate much of Los Angeles California. Transcription / Notes L.A. APOCALYPSE Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. This is Friday the 17th day of January in the year of our Lord 2025. I will be talking about the wildfires that have devastated much of Los Angeles, California killing many, leaving many homeless without shelter, and ruining the lives of 10's of thousands and also rendering the once beautiful entertainment capitol of the world a burned-out wasteland. I want to begin this report with a quote from one of the few remaining real journalists in America, Bari Weiss, formerly of the New York Times. “Gavin Newsom, Karen Bass, and other Democrat leaders bend over backwards to focus on left wing social justice issues that have absolutely nothing to do with the role of government. Yet when it comes to the most basic functions of government, such as keeping buildings from burning down, they have failed completely.” “Los Angeles is being governed and the state of California is being governed by people who have lost sight of the basics of governing. They have lost sight of the idea that we pay you a tax so that you take care of basics for us. And nothing could be more basic than preventing the burning down of, as you just said in your introduction, an area twice the size of Manhattan, right? It's hard to conceive of how big this is.” Yes, the once beautiful Golden State with its sunshine and surfing lifestyle has been turned into a veritable living hell. The fires rage on with over 25,000 acres still ablaze as I record this with a couple still out of control. So far, more than 250,000 people have been evacuated and have no shelter, and the last count I have is 25 deaths but that will obviously climb because no one knows what lies in the rubble of the thousands of burned to the ground homes and businesses. This was and is a total collapse of the new green-woke style of government whereby the posture of those we elect, the color of their skin, their gender, and their sexuality are all more important than whether they have the background and skills necessary to perform the basics of government. So, who's to blame for this disaster, the politicians of course but also the people of California who elected them. In the case of California, there is no one else to blame, not Donald Trump, not Republicans, and certainly not climate change. Those are all just excuses for the complete failure and arrogant incompetence and total disdain for the people the politicians are elected to serve. California is a state in which Republicans have zero political power. The days of Ronald Reagan are over and even Pat Brown and his son Jerry didn't let the state burn down around them. Not just the politicians, but all the state media, the newspapers, the online news sites all the high-tech monopolies like Apple, Google, and Facebook just echo the same mindset. Anything left from the old California that still works predates the year 2000 so the destruction has been ongoing for at least 25 years. Right now, the state has a congressional delegation of 52 seats and only 17 Are Republicans. The Los Angeles city council has 15 members and not a single one is Republican so blame is fairly easy to assess. The city's new mayor, Karen Bass, boasts of the city's $50 billion budget along with adding 451 positions especially in the department of youth development. Justice, Care, and Operations Departments have been added for which the mayor seems quite proud. I would wager that she is less than proud that she recently cut more than $17 million from the fire department budget. She campaigned on a pledge to not travel internationally while in office but she was in the African nation of Ghana when the fire started. True, she went before the fires started and returned when she learned that her city was on fire,

In recent weeks, the United States has suffered several terrible tragedies. The Louisiana Bourbon Street massacre and the Los Angeles California fires. Watching these events, I wanted to share my thoughts on ways to deal with the crisis of life. In a world consumed by uncertainty, where wildfires blaze through cities and lives are uprooted instantly, a more profound truth emerges from the ashes. These moments strip life down to its core, reminding us of what truly matters. What drives us forward when all seems lost? What keeps us anchored amid chaos? In this episode, we explore the profound power of purpose—the guiding force that helps us endure and rise stronger. This podcast explores the essential question: What matters most to you? Through personal stories of resilience, such as rebuilding a life after losing a home to fire, and insights drawn from neuroscience, it explores how purpose can act as a stabilizing force, quieting the fear-driven amygdala and activating the reward systems in the brain that fuel motivation. Discover how, even in the darkest moments, purpose can transform pain into clarity and despair into determination.  But this episode isn't just for those in crisis. Purpose is a tool we can all use in our daily lives. Neuroscience shows that reflecting on what matters most activates self-awareness networks in the brain, helping us make decisions aligned with our values. From tackling life's daily challenges to navigating profound uncertainty, this podcast will challenge you to dig deep and reconnect with your own North Star. Whether you're searching for meaning in the face of adversity or seeking to lead a more intentional life, this episode offers a compelling blend of science, psychology, and personal narrative to inspire you. Don't just wonder about the power of purpose—experience it.  QUOTES BY DR. BRAY “Even in the darkest of times, there is always light.” “Crisis refines our purpose.”

Send us a textBrittany is originally from a small town in Washington State. She is a 34 year old mother of six children and lives in Los Angeles California. She tested positive for drugs at her birth because her mother was actively using. As a result, she was taken away from her and placed in custody with her uncle and aunt. When she was one and a half years old Brittany was taken away from them by Child Protective Services. It was found out that besides being abused physically by both, she had been sexually abused by her uncle. At age of 2, she was adopted by the chief of police of the town and his wife. Brittany calls his adoptive father “my rock” because of the support he has given to her during all her life, despite of differences in opinions at times. When she was 11, her adoptive parents divorced and as it happens, it was a very traumatic for Brittany. To make it worse, she was blamed by her adoptive mother as the cause of the divorce. She stayed with her adoptive father for some time. Brittany comments that she had the tendency to hurt herself.  Due to the duties of his adoptive father as a chief of police, there was nobody to look after Brittany during his long shifts. Brittany had to be placed in different foster homes. She was a rebel, at 12 years, she was placed in a treatment facility for difficult children; but she always found the way to run away from them. She escaped the treatment facility and being still a minor, she went to live with an 18-year-old guy. She was using drugs, having sex and doing all sort of things that a 15-year-old should not do. She was found by the police, and she was placed in a foster system, Brittany went to live to a foster home with thepastor of a church and his wife where she did not have time to misbehave, she was always at church. For one year she was with them, her foster parents did everything they could possibly do for her wellbeing, she wrote poetry and a diary to deal with her emotions. Brittany was diagnosed with a mental disability and addiction to substances because she was born from a drug addict mother. Then she was placed in an adult foster home where she thought she finally had found the family she was looking for; however, it did not last long, one week after she ran away and met a guy whom she was using drugs and having sex. At 19, she gave birth go her first daughter. She was diagnosed with HIV when she was on the 8th month of her third pregnancy. She was put immediately on a very effective treatment and reach viral suppression very quickly, and she was able to deliver a healthy baby boy. Now she has a family of four children living together, her children are negative, healthy strong and beautiful babies.Brittany practically has gone to hell and come back. She says that she is adherent to her HIV treatment because it represents well being for her kids and herself. She is in recovery from substance use and sober for 8 years now. She receives medical care at UCLA with Dr. De Ville. She is going to community college; her goal is to complete higher education and help children and teenagers to overcome their traumas. She is accomplishing what once she was told she was not going to be able to accomplish. Brittany's story is very intense and rough. It includes drug addiction, survival sex work, violence, rape, and sex trafficking. It also includes successes and accomplishments. It's a story of survival, recovery, and motherhood.Funding provided by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) Ending the HIV Epidemic Grant and the County of Los Angeles, Department of Public Health, This podcast is brought to you by the Los Angeles Family AIDS Network

Vickie Speed's life took a dramatic turn when her husband, Mitch Speed, a dedicated detective with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. A Late Start with Big Dreams in Law Enforcement Mitch Speed's path to law enforcement began later in life, after already navigating through several career paths. Driven by a desire to serve, he joined one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the country, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Mitch's career spanned over 15 years, and he spent most of it tackling some of the most complex criminal cases. Colleagues often described Mitch as a determined and empathetic detective who never hesitated to help those in distress. The interview with Vickie Speed is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. His devotion to law enforcement extended beyond his badge. Mitch was a mentor and friend to countless individuals in the community, serving as a father figure to at-risk youth and high school athletes alike. His unique approach to policing and personal connections within the community showcased his genuine passion for making a difference. Yet, his time on the force and exposure to potentially harmful environments would eventually catch up with him in an unimaginable way. Her Journey and Story, Cancer In Los Angeles California Sheriff's Department.  The Diagnosis: A New Battle In May 2016, Mitch was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer, a diagnosis that shook Vickie and their family to the core. They had assumed they had more time together, but life had other plans. Despite the devastating news, Mitch committed himself to helping others, asking God to use his journey to inspire and uplift. Mitch's cancer diagnosis was ultimately ruled a “line of duty” case, and he stepped away from active duty, diving fully into his faith, family, and his desire to continue serving others in any way he could. Keep informed by following the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest, Newsbreak, Medium and other social media platforms. As he battled cancer, Mitch found solace in writing. His creative side had been with him since high school, but now he began to share his journey with a broader audience. Through social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, Mitch inspired countless individuals, sharing stories of hope, faith, and resilience. His words resonated deeply, leading to a dedicated following and the publication of his book, *Mitch Speed: The Man Behind the Badge*, a compilation of life lessons, poems, and heartfelt reflections on the experiences that shaped him. Her Journey and Story, Cancer In Los Angeles California Sheriff's Department. Special Episode. The discussion is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio how and Podcast website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms.  Community Support and Lasting Impact Throughout Mitch's illness, Vickie was his steadfast companion, managing the complexities of treatment, financial decisions, and household responsibilities while navigating her own professional life. Their law enforcement family stood by them, a network of deputies, friends, and church members providing continuous support. Mitch's friends and colleagues even gathered daily at a local track, calling themselves the “Speed Walkers,” to walk in fellowship and draw strength from Mitch's encouragement. Vickie recalls the strength Mitch showed despite his health declining, “Mitch's healthcare team encouraged him to walk, and soon, deputies in uniform and community members joined him daily to hear his words of faith.” These gatherings became a source of comfort and connection for the couple, reminding them that they were never alone in this journey. Vickie's New Mission and Blue Cancer Connect After Mitch passed away in July 2018, Vickie channeled her grief into a mission to help others. She co-founded "Blue Cancer Connect", an organization dedicated to supporting families of law enforcement and first responders diagnosed with cancer. Combining her professional background in project management with her intimate understanding of the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis, Vickie has since provided invaluable support to countless families, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical advice. Her Journey and Story, Cancer In Los Angeles California Sheriff's Department. Special Episode. We covered her story in platforms like Medium and Newsbreak. Her journey led her to meet Tania Owen, a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detective, who had also suffered a tragic loss when her husband, Sgt. Steve Owen, was killed in the line of duty in 2016. Their shared experiences and resilience brought them together as friends and advocates, and they eventually co-authored the book "After the Badge". This powerful memoir is a testament to the sacrifices and courage of law enforcement families, aiming to offer support and hope to those coping with similar losses.  Sharing Their Story Across Platforms Today, Vickie and Tania continue to spread their message through various platforms, including social media, public speaking, and podcast interviews available on Apple, Spotify, and Newsbreak. We encourage you to care for your well-being as you listen to and share this episode about the all-too-real danger of human trafficking. Dr. Laura welcomes a return guest alongside a new expert in this challenging and vitally important episode on child sex trafficking. Alan Smyth, Executive Director of Saving Innocence (based in LA) and co-author of “MEN! Fight For Me”, returns to the show along with new guest Conroy Kanter, President of KK Ranch Productions and Producer of the movie Trafficked. Their conversation lifts the veil of secrecy on the issue of child sex trafficking, revealing how close to home it is and the current efforts to raise awareness of the tragic reality of this heinous crime.Alan Smyth reveals that his celebrated book, “MEN! Fight For Me”, written with the collaborative efforts of trafficking survivors, is now in audiobook form for even wider distribution. Conroy Kanter shares how her 2017 film, Trafficked, starring Ashley Judd and Patrick Duffy, is currently available to watch on Amazon Prime. Alan and Conroy readily share their knowledge with Dr. Laura. Awareness of the grim reality of child sex trafficking is necessary in order to combat the continuing spread of the criminal practice. To that end, everyone who hears this conversation is offered an opportunity to acknowledge the present danger of the issue and act by sharing these resources and protecting children with foreknowledge.    “There's a trafficker, and then there's a trafficked victim, to coin your movie title. And all of that is exploitation. There's certainly exploitation that isn't yet trafficking, but when that third-party trafficker, controller, is forcing someone to be somewhere and receiving money for some sort of sexual, you know, exploitation or effort, then it becomes trafficking. And it's usually, according to the definition, through force, physical force, oftentimes violent force, sometimes lethal force, fraud or coercion.” Alan Smyth“And [trafficking] is not something that you just want to say, oh, that happens in another country far far away. It happens right here!” Conroy KanterAbout Alan Smyth:Alan Smyth is married and a father of two children and one grandchild. He is the Executive Director for Saving Innocence, an anti-human trafficking agency based in Los Angeles California.Alan has responsibility for Direct Services and Business Operations.Alan recently collaborated on a book with numerous survivors of Human Trafficking entitled MEN! This panel is from the 2024 Ontario Regional Conference held last month.  There are two panelists, William L from Toronto Ontario and Cara B from Los Angeles California each shares for about 25 min on the topic. I just added the 40th Annual Spring Break LGBTQ AA Conference happening in Scottsdale Arizona May 17-19, looks like a lot of fun.
