As human beings, we are often very protective of our own sense of personal justice – and injustice.   When I was a child, I had a teacher who – to me – seemed very unfair. If one of the kids in the class did something like write a bad word on the chalkboard, she would ask the entire class who did it. She really did her best to find the culprit, and carry out punishment.   But sometimes she just couldn't figure it out. No one would admit it, and there wasn't enough evidence to pin it on any specific student.   So her solution was – the whole class loses recess for the whole day. Definitely not fair! It always bugged me when that happened – I was being punished even though I hadn't done anything wrong.   My guest today, Scott, was also a victim of injustice, but on a much larger scale. He was charged with a crime that he didn't commit, and was held in a foreign jail for far too long. A grieving father in North Carolina learns that the man accused of killing his 22-year-old daughter in South Carolina should have already been in prison for burglary, but a clerical error let him walk free. A Pennsylvania man goes on trial for allegedly killing his father, cutting off his head with a machete, and calling for a violent uprising in a gory video he posted online. In a follow-up letter to Judge Subramanian, Sean Combs' attorneys strongly urged the court to release him on bail immediately. They criticized the government for portraying Combs as the leader of a decades-long racketeering enterprise and devoting extensive resources to a case that, in their view, ultimately collapsed under scrutiny. The defense emphasized that after nearly a year of pretrial detention, a jury of Combs' peers heard the full scope of the government's evidence—including testimony from former partners—and decisively rejected the core allegations by acquitting him of both racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking.The letter also underscored the relatively minor nature of the two counts on which Combs was convicted—interstate prostitution involving consenting adults. His lawyers noted that similar charges are no longer prosecuted by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, the Los Angeles DA, and many others. They argued that further detention is unnecessary and unjust, especially given Combs' eligibility to serve any remaining sentence at a lower-security facility under the sentencing guidelines. LATE SUNDAY NIGHT, police in El Salvador arrested one of President Nayib Bukele's sharpest critics, Ruth Eleonora López, an anti-corruption attorney who has spent years exposing government abuses. “[She] is one of the strongest voices in defense of democracy,” says Noah Bullock, her colleague and the executive director of Cristosal, a human rights group operating in northern Central America, including El Salvador. López, a university professor and former elections official, heads Cristosal's anti-corruption unit. She has also been an outspoken critic of Bukele's crackdown on gang violence that has resulted in “arbitrary detentions, human rights violations,” and the imprisonment of people not connected to gangs, according to Cristosal. The organization has documented widespread abuses in the country's prison system. “There's a clear pattern of physical abuse, and on top of that, a clear pattern of systematic denial of basic necessities like food, water, bathrooms, medicine — medical care in general," says Bullock. “Those two factors have combined to cause the deaths of at least 380 people” in custody in recent years. That's a prison system “that's been contracted by the U.S. government,” Bullock adds. This week on The Intercept Briefing, Bullock speaks to host Jessica Washington about López's continued imprisonment and what her work and detention reveals about the Trump administration's interest in El Salvador's prison system. Facing vague corruption charges, López has seen her family and lawyer but not yet a judge. “The type of jails and the prison system that the United States has contracted is one of a dictatorship — one that operates outside of the rule of law,” says Bullock. But El Salvador isn't the only country the U.S. is looking to partner with to outsource immigration detention. “Now in addition to El Salvador, the U.S. has reportedly explored, sought, or struck deals with at least 19 other countries,” says Nick Turse, national security fellow for The Intercept. “Many of these countries,” says Turse, “have been excoriated by not only human rights groups and NGOs, but also the U.S. State Department.”“ These policies did not leap fully formed from the head of Donald Trump,” says Turse. They have a legacy largely stemming from the post-9/11 counterterrorism policies of the George W. It's the third week for what's turned out to be a series about inmates! This week, Jeremy Bradley talks about knowing a convicted bank robbery. Spoiler: it was his journalism instructor! When JB learned of the news that the one-time local celebrity was busted for heists across Canada, he couldn't believe what happened to the life of his former mentor. While the news saw the teacher lose nearly all of his personal relationships, JB felt compassion because, despite the crime, he knew the person well enough to realize there was a deeper issue at hand. Paul says to the church at Galatia, “So Christ has truly set us free.” What did Jesus set us free from? What put us in bondage to begin with? And the answer to that question is found in Paul's letter to them, “The Law,” and in particular, they have listened to false teachers and have been convinced they, as Gentiles, need to be circumcised and follow the law. Paul makes it clear, if they follow the law, Christ is no effect to them, and they have been cut off from Christ. If you're cut off from something, you have been removed and there is a separation. It goes back to the Garden of Eden, when man chose to sin, they were separated from God, and man has tried to reconcile that relationship ever since but everything we do is not good enough.
