Welcome to the Psychedelic Conversations Podcast! In this episode, we speak with Dr. Michele Ross, a neuropharmacologist and founder of the 7-HOPE Alliance, to explore the healing potential of Kratom and its key alkaloid, 7-Hydroxymitragynine. We discuss how this plant medicine, long used in Southeast Asia, offers hope for people managing chronic pain, trauma, and opioid withdrawal. Dr. Ross shares her personal journey from addiction researcher to plant medicine advocate, and explains why education, safety, and mindful, intentional use are crucial in harm reduction. Together, we reflect on conscious healing practices, accessibility, and the importance of viewing plant medicines as allies in recovery.About Michele:Dr. Michele Ross is a neuropharmacologist, addiction expert, and best-selling author who has been at the cutting edge of plant-based therapies for over a decade. Her journey with 7-OH is both scientific and personal: after suffering a near-fatal pulmonary embolism from prescribed medications, she turned to natural alternatives like cannabis, mushrooms, and kratom to reclaim her health. Today, she brings that expertise and lived experience to her role at 7-HOPE, where she leads efforts to educate consumers, train healthcare professionals, and push forward scientific research on 7-OH. Dr. Ross is a powerful advocate for patient rights and responsible regulation, committed to ensuring that tools like 7-OH are understood, accessible, and safe.7-HOPE Alliance:https://7hopealliance.org/Connect with Michele:- Website: https://drmicheleross.com/- Twitter: https://x.com/drmicheleross?lang=en- LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmicheleross- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drmicheleross/Thank you so much for joining us! Steve welcomes Rep. Cam Cavitt, who represents Michigan's 106th House District, to discuss two key issues making headlines in Michigan. First, they dive into the Kratom crackdown, as lawmakers move to regulate the controversial substance following the tragic death of a man from what's being called “gas station heroin.” Rep. Cavitt breaks down what's in the proposed legislation, the dangers of unregulated Kratom products, and what Michigan can do to protect consumers without overreaching. Then, the conversation turns to an issue close to home for many Michiganders, hunting license prices. Cavitt talks about efforts to prevent price hikes that could push everyday hunters and outdoor enthusiasts out of the woods, and why protecting Michigan's hunting heritage remains a priority.

At 21 years old, Lucas has never had a legal drink—yet he's already survived alcohol addiction, Kratom dependence, and the brutal withdrawals that followed. His story begins in a chaotic household where nightly drinking and fighting were the norm. By 19, Lucas was mixing alcohol with pills, throwing up blood, and blacking out behind the wheel. That night at home became his rock bottom—and the start of change. But when he stopped drinking, Kratom slid in to fill the void. Sold right next to the energy drinks at gas stations, it seemed harmless—“all natural.” In reality, it's a partial opioid agonist that hooks into the brain's mu receptors. Lucas thought it was helping him stay functional—until he couldn't go a day without it. Lucas shares what recovery looks like when you do it on your own, the painful truth about “functional” addiction, and how community ultimately helped him heal. This episode is going to be more interesting than many of the herbs we have looked at. We will be looking at probably one of the most controversial herbs today: kratom or Mitragyna speciosa. It is supposed to have pain relieving properties and is banned or almost banned in many developed countries. As always, we will do our deep dive into this herb of the world and look at its traditional uses, its preparation, interactions, and cautions. And, as usual, we will be adding something a little different…we are going to discuss opioids and opioid receptors. Each episode of the podcast will go into great depth about a single herb or formula. Besides covering the basics of herbology including category, and functions, we will explore the history, quality, science, pharmacology, evidence, and any potential interactions of each herb or formula. Please join us in another fascinating exploration into the exciting and potentially dangerous archeology of herbs…please don your cool hat, bring your whip, and join us in the herbal jungle!
Like many 18-year-olds, Jeremy Rivers had been dealing with social anxiety for years by the time he got to the end of high school. But his problems melted away this June when he tried his first 7-OH pill.Join Jason Lachance and Flindt Andersen as they discuss a "teen story" out of "San Francisco" while diving into the complexities of "alcohol" and "drug abuse". They emphasize the importance of "family relationships" during "addiction" and the road to "recovery".7-OH, which is short for 7-hydroxymitragynine, is a powerful opioid related to the drug kratom that's often sold in candy-flavored pills. Rivers first noticed 7-OH at a gas station five minutes away from his family's Bay Area house and bought it out of curiosity. Immediately hooked, he returned the following day for more. Within three months, he had spent over $5,000 on 7-OH, as he quickly developed a tolerance and had to take more and more to get the relief he was looking for, and was in a deep stage of addiction. He had gotten accepted into a state university in California, but on the day in September he was supposed to start his freshman year, his parents dropped him off at rehab instead of a dorm.
This week on the Pod, Amy and Maya confirm they are still part boy. Then they immediately get off the rails with a deep dive on Kratom. They reminisce about when they learned what “lot lizards” were. It's a real education this week. The ladies are so excited for the return of Chi Chi's Mexican Restaurant. They plot a double date to determine if the Chi Chi's hype is warranted. We know, we know…the plate is hot. Amy packs up the cabin and is also moving her household. The packing hell is real. Why do you always get injured packing up the cabin? Amy cries about mouse poop. The ladies discuss Tyler's Dad's Toilet Theory of Responsibility. Get this: Gen Z are getting married to their best friends regardless of gender or orientation. Maya and Amy review the Lilith Fair documentary. The fashion, the feminism, the 90s. Also, can we all agree that the Indigo Girls are saints? Next, some quick Cracker Barrel talk. Then, a quick Gilmore Girls love fest. Amy reviews Charlie Sheen's book. Maya plays some audio from a Hallmark movie called Love and Birding.
SlimFasts' the Joe Camel of Kratom. What's with all these women teachers hooking up with students? Slim got a warning from his neighbor. Lazlo and SlimFast are DISGUSTED by women' s bathroom (and periods). SlimFast gave himself a sponge bath, and Lazlo places a lot of money on a sports bet. Would you re-do your college years? 7OH is a new drug that has showed itself to be highly addictive for many people, yet it's perfectly legal in most places, there's no regulation for it, and many people start on it with no idea of what they are getting into. We are seeing more and more clients show up at Windmill Wellness Ranch struggling with this, so we need to get the word out. Kira and Casey discuss all the ins and outs of 7OH and what we are doing to help further research about it.
One of today's most requested topics is the rise of Feel Free—a small blue bottle making a big impact. Marketed as a dietary supplement, it combines kava root and kratom, raising major concerns about addiction, legality, and youth access. In this episode, Tall Cop unpacks the data and explains why this mix is risky, and explores the role of social media in driving its popularity. With no age restrictions, addictive potential, and misleading marketing, this is a trend parents, educators, and communities can't afford to ignore.****Don't forget to register for the 4th Annual Tall Cop Emerging Drug Trends Conference coming up in November! September 22, 2025- New York policymakers looking to regulate the marketing of Kratom aren't making carveouts for "natural" products, which is a mistake, according to Dr. C Michael White, a department head at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy.
Psychiatrist, internist, and addiction medicine specialist Muhamad Aly Rifai discusses his article "Why kratom addiction is the next public health crisis." Muhamad explains how kratom, a botanical imported from Southeast Asia, has rapidly spread across the U.S., marketed as a natural remedy for pain and opioid withdrawal. He warns that its potent alkaloids act directly on opioid receptors, leading to dependence, withdrawal, psychosis, and even fatalities. Muhamad outlines the surge in use during the COVID-19 pandemic, the risks to youth, and the dangers of contamination and unregulated production. He also highlights the lack of tailored treatments for kratom dependence, the need for stronger regulation, and the importance of educating the public about its hidden dangers. Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of why kratom's growth poses urgent challenges for both clinicians and policymakers. Our presenting sponsor is Microsoft Dragon Copilot. On this episode of the VinnyRoc Podcast, Vincent Vargas sits down with John Ramsey, Senior R&D Manager at Diversified Botanics, to dive into a powerful conversation about natural medicine, CBD, kratom, and the dangers of 7-hydroxy mitragynine (7-OH). John, a veteran and former Army medic, shares his journey from the military to the hemp and CBD industry, explaining how natural remedies like CBD and kratom helped him avoid the destructive cycle of pharmaceutical painkillers. Together, Vince and John explore: The truth about CBD isolate and why it became a breakthrough in non-psychoactive relief. How the endocannabinoid system works and why our bodies are designed to receive cannabinoids. What kratom really is, its traditional uses, and how it differs from synthetic and dangerous 7-hydroxy extracts. The opioid epidemic in the military and how kratom may help support recovery. Why Diversified Botanics is fighting to eliminate 7-OH and create safe, transparent, third-party tested products. This episode is about cutting through the noise, misinformation, and stigma to give you a clearer picture of CBD, kratom, and the fight to keep natural remedies safe. My guest is Dr. Chris McCurdy, PhD, FAAPS, professor of medicinal chemistry at the University of Florida and a world expert on the pharmacology of kratom and other plant-derived medicinal compounds. We discuss kratom's wide-ranging effects, including its use for boosting energy, enhancing mood, managing pain and as a potential opioid substitute, while also explaining its critical safety concerns and addictive potential, especially for kratom-derived/isolate products. We also discuss plant-based compounds more generally for their potential benefits and risks. Dr. McCurdy offers a balanced perspective on kratom and other plant-based and naturally occurring medicinal compounds, highlighting and contrasting their promise for human health with potential serious risks.
