Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick is calling for stricter regulations, and potentially an outright ban, on kratom, a widely available but largely unregulated substance sold in convenience stores and gas stations across Pennsylvania. Hetrick says the drug, which has opioid-like effects, has been linked to local deaths and poses serious health risks, including seizures, liver failure, and, in some cases, death. He is urging parents to be aware of its availability and calling on state lawmakers to take action.Joining the conversation are Dr. Sara Kawasaki, Division Director of Addiction Services at Penn State College of Medicine, and Dr. Robb Bassett, Associate Medical Director of the Poison Control Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and an expert in emergency medicine, medical toxicology, and addiction medicine. He said that colloquial descriptors like "gas station heroin" are accurate. "There's no question it's the same as an opioid." But on a previous episode of Plain Talk, Armstrong said the natural, botanical variety of kratom should be banned too, and that's where Haddow and his group diverge. Natural kratom is a different animal. "This is akin to what happened during Prohibition," he argued. "We don't call moonshine corn and we certainly don't call caffeine coffee. These are things that need to be closely examined and properly regulated." Haddow argues that good policy coming out of this session would ban synthetic kratom and regulate the natural variety to ensure that it's only available to adults and is transparent about things like ingredients and dosage. Also on this episode, co-host Chad Oban and I responded to listener feedback and talked about renewed controversy around Fargo-area state lawmaker Rep. Desiree Morton. In June, Morton attacked fellow lawmakers for allowing Somali volunteers on their campaigns. Morton said in her message that she's "not a hater," but Oban disagrees. "She is a hater," he said. "She's a bigot. She's a racist." The federal government used to help states identify and respond to election threats, but not this election cycle. Drought and dry conditions have covered most of Minnesota. In this episode I'm speaking with Dr. Christopher McCurdy and Dr. Swathi Nadakuduti about Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa). If you aren't familiar with this species, they are a tree from South-East Asia whose leaves have been chewed or brewed for a long time for a variety of reasons, but mostly used in a similar way to Coffee or Coca. More recently powdered leaves and live plants have been imported across the globe and have been used for similar uses as well as for treating pain, substituting for opioids and many other purposes. Between these 2 guests we cover traditional use, cultivation, chemical constituents, recent changes in the Kratom marketplace, and best practices for consumption. I was very impressed with their ability to speak on these topics utilizing their many years of primary research, but also in way that should be easily understood by most listeners.
