The 13th Annual Watsonville Film Festival was held earlier this month, and for the first time in its history, it screened films outside of Watsonville. In Salinas, they presented some films at Maya Cinema in Oldtown, most of which quickly sold out of tickets. We set up our equipment at XL Publichouse to record some interviews at the after-party. We talked with Andrea Leon, DJ Werm, Cari and Hector to talk about the festival and their experience in Oldtown.
Some know him as Lombriz, others call him Werm, and others call him The Essence Music. We got him in the studio to talk about himself if you don't know who he is. If you want to see the artist at work you can find him every Wednesday evening at XL Publichouse hosting a weekly vinyl night. That event is one of the best places in the 831 to find and listen to rare music.
For the last year, Indie Basement cinema has been a monthly showcase of local short films. It is a place where local filmmakers can screen their films in front of their hometown crowd for free. Once a month the basement of XL Public House is turned into a cozy cinema where you can relax and have some popcorn and a beer while watching locally made films. I sat down with the two filmmakers who were having their movies screened for the anniversary. Jesus Cruz (@jxcruz510) is a filmmaker from Newark who came down to show two of his films: "Peanut Butter and Zombie" and "La Cobija". Julie Ruiz (@julieruizcinema) is a young director from Salinas who screened a music video she directed as well as her short film "Louie's Scary Movies." Sergio (@the_essence_music) can be heard spinning records multiple times a month. He sat down with us to talk about his time watching Indie Basement grow. Joey (@sinistaselecta) is one of the two people along with Rob (@masa_831_), who came up with the idea, and it is their hard work that has made this into the great event that it has become.
After a year of waiting, Monterey Bay FC began to play in USL Championship. The result did not go our way, but we finally got to see how Frank Yallop had prepared the boys. Mayra Gomez joins me in the studio to break down the first match. We also talk about the first-ever watch party at XL Publichouse hosted by our own supporter's group, Fuerza Union. We made it out to practice this week and talked to some of the players about their first match experience. Walmer Martinez talks about what it's like to play professional soccer at the college where he got his degree. Adrian Rebollar breaks down his goal, scored 24 hours after Monterey Bay announced his signing. We ask the newest signing, Simon Dawkins, about his expectations and how his extensive experience can help the young players in the locker room. Head Coach Frank Yallop talks about this weekend's opponent Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, and how he thinks Monterey Bay can get its first win ever.
Alisal. Riker. Sherwood. If you grew up in Salinas, you are probably familiar with these names, but have you ever wondered the story behind them? We go back over 200 years of Salinas history to uncover some of the stories that have been forgotten over the years but tell the tale of our beloved little city. From Mexico to Mexicans and a lot of stuff in between, this story is a wild ride! This episode is sponsored by our old friends XL Publichouse. They are open from Wednesday - Saturday from 2 - 8:30 and have curbside and home delivery available.
Starting your own business is tough. Taking over an established business with a loyal clientele might be tougher. That is the challenge that three guys from Salinas took when they bought XL Publichouse earlier this year. We sit down with two of them to discuss their history and how they ended up owning Salinas' first craft beer bar and what their plans are for the future.
The Salinas nightlife scene continues to evolve in Oldtown, so we had to talk to somebody that was in the middle of the revolution. Casey has been a friend of the podcast for years now and is the right person to talk about all the changes. From pouring drinks at 201 to consuming drinks at XL Publichouse, Dubbers, Kings Den, Farmers Union, Jaime's/Jesse's/Sinaloa(seriously what's the official name?) she has the lowdown on the going on's in our beloved partying neighborhood.
Once a month for the last 11 months there has been a comedy show in the basement of XL Publichouse that was a showcase of local comedians. It's grown so much that you can now watch comedians from Santa Cruz, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. September 28 marks the first anniversary of the Bricks 'N Beer show so we talked to a couple of the key people helping put this show together. Mike Booth and Anthony Barrera are back to let us know what we can expect from the first-anniversary show!!
This episode is the first to be recorded in our new studio in Oldtown Salinas! That's right we went from a dinner table in Cujo's house to XL Public House, and now we have our own space to keep growing and interviewing all the cool people that make Salinas the dope city that it is. Along those lines, this episode is all about our journey and our new neighborhood. Take a listen and tell us what you think!!
In this episode, we interview several of the comedians from the May 18 edition of the Bricks N' Beer Comedy show that happens monthly at XL Public House. If you have not been to this FREE comedy show, you are missing out on a great night of jokes and beer. But you don't have to take our word for it listen to the comedians tell it in their own words! Featured comedians include Mac Ruiz, Matt Bokemeier, Molly Stein, and the guy that put it all together Mike Booth!
We recorded this episode at XL Public House which has been our studio for most of our 200+ episodes we have recorded but this episode was different. This was the last day that the original owners, the De Leon's, we're going to be running the bar! After six years they decided it was time to spend more time with their families and let someone else take over what they have started. We believe the new owners will continue the tradition of being the locals drinking hole and look forward to recording back there under the new owners.

Most of the time on the podcast we just talk about the events happening in town but every once-in-a-while we get to talk to some people involved in the event, well this is one of those episodes. Friday, March 22 at XL Public House one of Salinas' newest bands is going to share the stage with one of Salinas' most veteran bands when The Rudians share the stage with Wasted Noise. Our buddy Gio comes on the show to talk about his latest project called The Rudians and talks about their style, influences, and the way you can get a producer credit on their first album.
This week our guest is local comedian Mike Booth. For the last couple of months, Mike and a group of other comedians have put on a comic showcase in the basement of XL Publichouse. He talks to us about his plans for the showcase and where a young comic can find mic time in Monterey County. If you didn't know Salinas has a tiny comedy scene check this episode out!
It has been a while since I last released an episode so I decided to do this one a little different. This episode was recorded at XL Publichouse in Oldtown Salinas as the Quakes were taking on Vancouver Whitecaps so if I sound a little distracted I apologize it is rare for the Quakes to not lose on the road.
This episode was recorded back at our old recording space in XL Publichouse in Oldtown during the Parade of Lights festival. The rain stayed away long enough to keep everyone dry and the beer warmed us up. The excitement of being back at our old recording spot made the topics more varied than usual but you don't want to miss Oz's chronological history of porn in the last 15 years. Happy Holidayze.
Ever since we got serious about this show over 3 years ago our friends at XL Publichouse have been gracious enough to allow us to use a corner of the bar as our recording studio. As our show grows and matures into something we could not have dreamed of we want to continue improving the show any way we can. This episode was a major step in that direction in that it was recorded in an actual quiet studio location that we are putting together. I hope you enjoy the wild journey and if this is your first time to listen, welcome.
This week, we are back at the XL Publichouse with another edition of the most sophisticated and educated conversations about Salinas. We talk about a hidden El Salvadorian in Oldtown and where to find it. Oz also attempts to discuss how modern society is so quick to give up personal information then get upset when that information is used to sell them things. A thing he likes to call Humanity 2.0.
This week Oz talks about his experience at the Gold Cup final and how his new life goal is to be carried into a sporting event. We also sit down with James from the XL Publichouse to talk about a new Oldtown revitalization project that is taking its next step towards completion.
Open up the episode and hear a spoken word piece entitled "Incarcerated Introspection," by Alaric, a local artist from the 831. Listen in and hear how that piece developed and how Alaric went from writing poetry in notebooks to developing his talent further and becoming an artist recording over tracks. Salinas doesn't offer many opportunities for local hip hop artists, but Alaric was one of the many that brought it at the recent Speakeasy show here at the XL Publichouse. Alaric shares how he's developed his talent and the work it takes to get his music out to the public. Hear 2 tracks during the show, Believin and Black Roses, they will be on his upcoming project release Unheard Talent. Talent grows in the 831 so take a listen and Call It What You Will Salinas.
This week our show starts off at Jesse G. Sanchez Elementary school where the Alisal Union School Board met to discuss school resource officers (SROs) being on Alisal campuses. We spoke to Israel Villa of MILPA, Salinas Police Chief Adele Fresè, and community members about their thoughts on having SROs on Alisal campuses. The issues of SROs has been in the news a lot recently as it was turned down at the Salinas Union High School District and the Police Department has until the end of August to use this grant for SROs or it will expire. Our episode shifts over to the XL Publichouse where Rafael and Dom continue the discussion on SROs. The conversation moves to cover other topics such as a recent workshop Rafael attended on non-profits working with immigrants, we touched on the sad news of those who were found dead in a trailer in San Antonio when they tried to enter the country. Dom explains why he still hasn't seen 13th on Netflix even though he knows he should have, hear talk on the recent Trump rant and ban of transgender soldiers, and we end on a positive note as we talk about the film "Dolores" a documentary on the life of Dolores Huerta coming to Salinas in September.
It gets waste deep as Dom, Walter, and Raj somehow get very little discussion done about the latest national news. These three haven't been together on an episode in a while so in a scene reminiscent of the GOP primaries, we go after each other. During the show there is a 15 seconds of silence to reenact a stunning chess victory at XL Publichouse last week. Join us this week as you listen to our show blow off some steam.
This week, we welcome Alex Schumacher to the XL Publichouse. Alex is a local cartoonist/writer/dude on his grind. He shares with us his projects that can be found at AlexSchumacherArt.com and they have a little something for everyone. We hear about the work goes into writing a non-traditional, illustrated narrative called Decades of (in)Experience. They follow the life and times of one Luke Carlin, and you might find some familiar themes that we have all experienced in retail 9-5s. We get into another project of Alex's, Mr. Butterchips, and Dom is excited to find that he can purchase Mr. Buttercups merch. Word to the wise, if you get some merch, he will include a hand-drawn sketch, bonus! If you are trying to break into the comic/graphic novel biz, you can even check out Alex's column, Bread Crumbs From the Void, in Five2One Magazine. There he offers up tips and advice on what it takes to put out your own work and do it consistently. Listen in and share this episode of Call It What You Will with our guest, Alex Schumacher!
Back at the XL Publichouse, Dom speaks with Miranda from Our Gente, an LGBTQIA+ program at the Epicenter. Miranda does a great job walking Dom through what LGBTQIA+ stands for, twice, as he was slow to get it. Hear about some of the great activities Our Gente offers, such as Queering the Holidays that will be coming up next week, December 8th. Learn about some of the volunteer opportunities available so if you're interested, you can find out how to volunteer for Our Gente!
Our longest episode yet. We started at 430 on election day and as the beers flowed throughout the night we talked to many in attendance to get their reaction to the election. Listen as the disbelief sets in suddenly and the conversation turns to one that many probably had across the land, what happens next? We talked to many in attendance at the XL Publichouse on an election night that will no doubt be remembered a long time.
All 3 Presidential Debates are in the books and we talked with a few people at XL Publichouse that caught the debate to see what they thought. We finish up with just the Call It What You Will Regulars at the roundtable and it predictably went south. Listen in to hear what people at XL thought after seeing the last of 3 memorable debates.
This week, Oz and Cujo review Cujo's birthday week which started on a warm Tuesday night at BJs Brewhouse. The week went on to include Pasadena rockers The Letters Home on Thursday and ended on Saturday night at XL Public House.
Dom, Walter, and Raj speak with Adam DeLeon about the interesting combination of politics, podcasts, opinions, and beer that you will find at the XL Public House.
This week we sit down with another local and XL Publichouse regular, Drew. We talk about the California Clasico and kids that need to keep their thoughts to themselves. Drew tells us what it is like to work in an organic walnut orchard and the hectic schedule of an organic farmer trying to sell his produce all over the bay area.
One of the reasons we like to record at XL Public House is, you never know who might walk in the door. This week it was our friend and Santa Cruz based musician Steve-O. Oz and Steve-O have been friends for over 18 years so they have a lot of stories to pass back and forth. Steve-O talks about the difference between the Santa Cruz and Salinas music scenes and what can be found under the grates and manholes in downtown Salinas. We also play our interview we recorded with The Letters Home after their latest show at the Public House. They have very kind words to say about our city and tell us all about their nationwide tour and new album.
In this episode our guest is one of the many regulars at the XL Public House. This is an example of a typical conversation that can be had with the locals in oldtown Salinas. We compare Spotify to Pandora, Oz explains why he is also a Jaguar, talk about the best place for fresh juice in Salinas, and many other topics. Listen and be in our world for a couple of hours.
This week on Salinas Underground, we give a recap of The Letters Home show in the basement of the XL Public House. We also talk about the upcoming John Steinbeck birthday celebration on February 28. Oz continues his Salinas soccer campaign, did you know Salinas love soccer, and Cujo keeps you up to date with Cujo's Metal Minute.
This episode our guest is another one of Salinas' great citizens, our friend Marcy. Marcy was raised in Salinas and currently lives in Sacramento as an advocate for people in abusive relationships. Although, not planned she is an excellent guest to talk about Oz's Newz topic of the day, the abusive actions of the Salinas City Council against its citizens. The council regularly asks the citizens of Salinas to give more. More time, more money, more appreciation, but Oz is asking them to be the change they want to be in Salinas. To have a functioning, healthy community we all need to work together and the "do as I say not as I do" attitude of the people running this town needs to stop. We also talk about the events happening the last couple of weekends of the month: Feb 21 Slayer day at the XL Public House, Feb 22 The Letters Home comes back to Salinas to do a show at the XL Public House, Feb 28 IPA fest at the XL Public House and it is John Steinbecks birthday. Salinas Underground will be giving away baked goods from a local bakery outside of the Public House.
This week on Salinas Underground we talk about all the events planned for the end of the month. Slayer day Feb 21 then The Letters Home show on the 22nd, both at the XL Public House. Also IPA fest and Steinbecks birthday on the 28th. Oz also gives a one word answer on how 500 people can change Salinas forever. Spoiler alert, the word is: VOTE. Listen to this episode so you can know what SUP in Salinas.
In this episode the guys talk about the exciting things planned for Salinas in the next month. The last week of February is going to be crazy!! Cujo's metal minute focuses on the Feb 22 performance of The Letters Home at the XL Public House. Oz keeps his soccer crusade going and also explains why if you build a farm in a lakebed you should expect it to flood from time-to-time. We also tell you how to get beer for a dollar and also how to drink more beer and only pay half the price.
What do you do when a band from Pasadena stops by your city's artwalk to do a show before going on to play in San Francisco? You interview them! This is our interview with The Letters Home a Soul-Rock band from Pasadena that brought down the house at the XL Public House this Friday.
In this episode we migrate a couple blocks down from our home at the XL Public House to the Cherry Beans open mic event for First Fridays. This was our first time there so we kept the episode short but packed it with a bunch of great content. We also chat with Rebecca from the Midnight Thieves after her acoustic set.
