Nationally recognized psychiatrist, internist, and addiction medicine specialist Muhamad Aly Rifai discusses his article "Physician legal rights: What to do when agents knock." Muhamad shares a terrifying but essential guide for any doctor facing an unexpected visit from federal agents or investigators. He explains why the physician's natural instinct to educate, reassure, and be helpful is actually a liability that can lead to a prison sentence. The conversation highlights the critical legal distinction established in Salinas v. Texas which means silence alone is not enough to protect you without a verbal invocation of rights. Muhamad contrasts real-life case studies of doctors who talked and lost everything with those who remained silent and were exonerated. Learn why the only safe response to an investigator is a specific single sentence that invokes your Fifth Amendment protection. Partner with me on the KevinMD platform.
The January 21 edition of the AgNet News Hour was a full-on technology showcase as hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill explored the fast-changing world of ag automation—from spray drones to millimeter-accurate weed control to bloom-time disease protection in almonds. The message was clear: for California growers facing rising labor costs and tighter margins, innovation isn't a luxury anymore—it's survival. The show opened with Papagni on the road in Salinas, sharing a quick reminder about heavy fog across the Central Valley and then jumping into a conversation about why marketing matters, even in agriculture. The hosts pointed to how companies like Crystal Creamery are adding kid-friendly games and facts to milk cartons, small changes that can boost long-term consumer demand through smart branding. From there, the episode shifted hard into ag tech with a featured interview with Arthur Erickson, co-founder of Hylio, a U.S.-based company manufacturing large agricultural drones designed for heavy-payload crop applications. Erickson described Helio's newest machine, the Atlas drone, as a massive unit capable of operating at around 550 pounds fully loaded, making it more like a small flying workhorse than a hobby drone. He also shared major industry news: the administration is moving toward restricting foreign-made drones and critical drone components, opening the door for American manufacturers to grow quickly and compete at scale. Erickson explained that drone applications can generate strong return on investment depending on the crop and use case, with research showing drones can outperform traditional tractor applications due to improved canopy penetration and reduced spray volume. Just as importantly, he emphasized ease of use: because the drones fly autonomously, both young operators and older farmers can learn quickly and put the technology to work. Next, Papagni interviewed Chad Yagow of Verdant Robotics, a company turning heads with its “aim before it applies” system called the Sharpshooter. Yagow explained that the machine uses AI and 3D field mapping to identify weeds and crops in real time and deliver micro-targeted applications, reducing liquid use by 96 to 99 percent compared to broadcast spraying. The system mounts on a standard three-point hitch tractor and is designed to be lightweight, fuel-efficient, and usable in softer field conditions where heavier rigs struggle. To close out the episode, Cowboy Dale interviewed Kendall Johnson of UPL, focusing on almond bloom-time disease protection. Johnson stressed that bloom is the most vulnerable window for disease entry and highlighted threats like brown rot, jacket rot, blossom blight, shot hole, scab, bacterial blast, and botrytis. He recommended strong timing from pink bud through bloom and emphasized rotating fungicide modes of action to prevent resistance. Johnson also highlighted Axios 20SC, a newer fungicide option with a unique mode of action and potential value for summer diseases like Alternaria as well. Between drones in the sky, precision sprayers on the ground, and smarter bloom programs in the orchard, this episode was a reminder that the future of farming is arriving fast—and California growers are right in the middle of it.

In this episode, Johnny sits down with Luis “Spider” Gutierrez, a longtime Northern California gang figure and former leader within the Norteño structure, to tell one of the most intense and unfiltered prison stories ever shared on the podcast. Raised in Salinas, California—one of the most gang-impacted cities in the state—Spider was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to decades in California's most violent Level IV prison yards. What followed was nearly 20 years of nonstop war behind the walls: mass riots, stabbings, political power struggles, and surviving situations most inmates don't live to talk about. Spider breaks down: -What it's really like to enter prison already marked for war -How Northern California gang politics actually function on the yards -100-man riots, organized violence, and surviving multiple gunshot wounds -The reality of loyalty, reputation, and respect inside high-security prisons -Why he never dropped out—and how he eventually made it home alive This is not a glamorized story. It's raw, graphic, and brutally honest—told by someone who lived every second of it and is still dealing with the aftermath today. Go Support Spider!

In this episode of Food Safety Matters, we speak with Mr. Yiannas, Mr. McDonald, Dr. Besser, and Dr. Hedberg [6:43] about: The increasing rate of food recalls issued by federal regulatory agencies, and what that might imply about the current systems for outbreak investigation and disease surveillance How federal and state public health agencies conduct foodborne illness outbreak investigations and the current success rates of these investigations Elements of the foodborne illness outbreak investigation process that are working well Potential areas for improvement for foodborne illness outbreak investigations and the metrics for "success" An idea for a National Foodborne Outbreak Investigation Board, similar to the model used for airlines with the National Transportation Safety Board, and how such a system might help improve food safety in the U.S. Sponsored by: Michigan State University Online Food Safety Program We Want to Hear from You! Children as young as 12 can legally work on California's farms, picking strawberries and pruning blueberry bushes along with a host of other physically demanding jobs. Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Robert J. Lopez spoke with 61 children who work in the fields of the Salinas, Santa Maria, San Joaquin and Pajaro valleys. They described unsafe and unsanitary conditions, extreme heat — and a fear of speaking up, because they can't afford to lose their jobs. Lopez reports that in California, “enforcement of child labor laws has been inconsistent, the number of workplace safety inspections and citations issued to employers have dropped and repeat offenders were not fined for hundreds of violations of pesticide safety laws.” He joins us to share his reporting, and how the state is responding to it. Guests: Erica Diaz-Cervantes, senior policy advocate, Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE) - an organization committed to social, economic, and environmental justice for working-class and immigrant communities in California's Central Coast; former underage farmworker Robert J. Lopez, Pulitzer prize-winning independent journalist, and fellow at the McGraw Center for Business Journalism; his reporting is titled “California's child farmworkers: Exhausted, underpaid and toiling in toxic fields” and “Lax oversight, few inspections leave child farmworkers exposed to toxic pesticides” Learn more about your ad choices. 19 year old Adrienne Salinas from Tempe disappeared on in the early morning hours of June 15, 2013 after a party that turned into a chaotic night. Shortly before vanishing, Adrienne was supposed to walk to a nearby AM/PM convenience store where a taxi was waiting for her. A woman matching her description was captured on CCTV walking in that direction, but Adrienne never made it to the cab.On August 6, 2013, nearly two months after she disappeared, human remains were discovered in a desert wash in Apache Junction, likely exposed after a heavy monsoon flood. DNA testing confirmed they belonged to Adrienne.Contact us at: weeknightmysteries@gmail.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/weeknightmysteriesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@weeknightmysteries
Newly published research confirms the January battery fire in Moss Landing released toxic metals into a protected marine estuary. And, an investigation into “Protect Salinas Renters” did not find evidence of wrongdoing in the group's efforts to gather signatures for a petition earlier this year.

Thanksgiving finds us recording live and unedited in Salinas. It was a low key holiday with lots of food and family, but no hysteria. It's Kelly's favorite holiday. We cooked, we laughed, we knit, we spun, and we were able to get a podcast recorded. We recorded in the dining room so there is some echo-y sound, along with dog and family background noise. Full notes with photos and links can be found in the podcast section of our shop website: TwoEwesFiberAdventures.com Join the community on Ravelry or become a patron and support the show on our Patreon Page. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Subscribe on Android. Marsha's Projects Socks: Finished! Used Red Heart Heart and Sole in colorway Black Jack. Socks: Using The Humming Bird Moon Full Moon BFL Sock in the colorway Eye of Newt. Mountain High: Heidi Kirrmaier. Using my handspun Flowers From My Garden. I decided to put the body on waste yarn and knit the sleeves. Of course color pattern is different because sleeve circumference is smaller than body. Occasionally breaking yarn to manage color. Sheridan Flats Spinning: Purchased 24 oz of 80/15/6 wool/mohair/silk roving in the colorway Kaleidoscope. The owner said to spin at a worsted weight for best results. Mill is Olympic Yarn & Fiber located in Cosmopolis, WA. I've filled two bobbins to date. Rag Rugs: Wound warp for four rag rugs and started warping loom. Warp is 4" and 6" stripes in royal blue, green, and orange. I've threaded the heddles and reed, and need to attach the warp to the front beam. Then I'll turn my attention to preparing fabric strips. Weaving Studio: It's a work in progress. Garden Redesign: I've created a project page. Kelly's Projects Chenille Rugs Part 2 The pad is woven and I've started cutting the strips. They are pretty different from one end to the other. More different than the other two pads were. Next up is warping for another pad so I can get two rugs again. Continuing my Sleeveless Vest by Lone Kjeldsen with handspun from Jazzman's " perfect fleece." I've done the horizontal stitch at the back yoke so not that much further on this week. Charity Hats 11 and 12: This isn't spirit yarn, it's the leftover handspun from the boxy sweater. Knitting it held double. 11 is done, working on 12. Both plain beanies. Natural Dyeing Experiments I have three bobbins of CA Red fiber dyed with long steeped toyon. Holiday Shopping List Opportunity: I got an email from Abundant Earth Fiber that they are having a holiday sale on their dye kits. These aren't natural dyes, they are acid dyes, but a fun way to get started if you don't have the separate dye equipment but want to dye with more than KoolAid. Maiwa has a similar kit for natural dyes that is also on sale this week. I've been having fun seeing what I can get from my local area, but this looks fun. Winter Weave-a-long Now through March 31 We are interested in hearing from anyone who has experienced the Newbury School of Weaving. Salpal1 (Sarah) has added quite a few cute patterns in the bundle. Ready for a fabulous gay retirement in Ecuador?Thinking about retiring abroad? You're not alone. In Ep. 616 we break down Ecuador—a country that punches above its weight with year-round spring weather, U.S. dollar convenience, solid healthcare, and a much lower cost of living. We cover legal landscape (marriage since 2019; gender recognition 2024), where stigma still shows up, and our Top 5 Ecuador cities for gay retirees—Salinas, Cotacachi, Guayaquil, Quito, Cuenca—with 2BR rent ranges, cost-of-living vs. U.S., and our Queer Money Retirement Rating for each.Key TakeawaysReal savings: Many Ecuador cities run ~50–70% cheaper than the U.S., with rents that can be a fraction of stateside prices.Climate win: Highland zones offer “eternal spring”—often no A/C or snow shovels.Queer reality: Legal wins exist, but visibility and safety vary by city; Quito leads for LGBTQ+ infrastructure, Cuenca for expat ease.Trade-offs: Big-city perks vs. crime hot spots (e.g., Guayaquil), beach life vs. tourist pricing (Salinas), quiet charm vs. fewer queer spaces (Cotacachi/Cuenca).Chapters:00:00 – Intro: Why Ecuador keeps popping for LGBTQ+ retirees02:29 – #5 Salinas (beach town, Vox gay disco): 2BR ~$500–$800 | COL ~50–65% ↓ | Rating 6/1004:37 – #4 Cotacachi (quiet Andean base): 2BR ~$450–$600 | COL ~60–70% ↓ | Rating 7/1006:29 – #3 Guayaquil (big-city energy): 2BR ~$620 | COL ~60–65% ↓ | crime caveat | Rating 7/1009:11 – #2 Quito (capital & queer hub): 2BR ~$675–$1,300 | COL ~54–63% ↓ | Rating 8/1011:40 – #1 Cuenca (expat favorite): 2BR ~$300–$600 | COL ~60–70% ↓ | Rating 9/1013:51 – Next up & wrap upLinks referenced in this episode:queermoneypodcast.com/citiesqueermoneypodcast.com/hgrcalcMentioned in this episode:Get Your Portugal Golden Visa Faster Here!Want a European passport with access to living in nearly any European country? Clay and his friend Russ Eagle discuss John Steinbeck's 1960 Travels with Charley tour of America from within Steinbeck's truck camper Rocinante. Thanks to the great generosity of the folks at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas, Clay and his Steinbeckian friend Russ were permitted to do the podcast at the dinette table of the pickup camper. They told the story of how Steinbeck purchased the camper—then a novelty—, how he used it as a metaphor for his travels in search of America, what happened to it after his transcontinental journey, and how it eventually found its way to the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas, California, where John Steinbeck grew up. Clay and Russ were able to report their discovery in the Center's archives of a document that shows just when Steinbeck returned home after his three month trek—thus solving one of the questions historians have had about the whimsical journey with his French poodle Charley. This episode was recorded live on September 27, 2025.
