As the Justice Department releases new documents from the Epstein files, more and more high-profile and powerful men are being exposed as having ties to the financier, child sex offender, serial rapist, and sex trafficker. There are also serious concerns about how the files are being released and what information is or isn't being redacted for the safety of the survivors. Today, host Ali Muldrow tackles this challenging topic with two guests, Prenicia Clifton, a Madison-based child advocate and founder of Seein’ is Believin’, and Grace Panetta, a journalist with The 19th. Panetta joins us from Capitol Hill where Attorney General Pam Bondi is testifying about the Justice Department's release of the Epstein files and where survivors are gathering to demand accountability. Panetta says that Democratic lawmakers are pressing Bondi about why survivors' information wasn't properly redacted and why some perpetrators’ names were.  Clifton describes several problems with how the Epstein files are being handled. First, is the adultification and therefore re-victimization of the survivors when officials and the press fail to treat them as children, as minors, who cannot consent to their abuse. Another problem is that white supremacy and wealth underpin our justice system such that when Epstein was first convicted in 2009, he received a short sentence and after that his powerful allies maintained their ties. Abuse happens when people have access, privacy, and control of others, says Clifton. She advises parents to have conversations with their children about consent and to know who their kids spend time with, including online.  They also discuss the “tough on crime” rhetoric of the Trump administration in comparison to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwells' crimes, the power dynamics between adults and children, and prioritizing abuse prevention in our communities by observing, interrupting, and creating policies to hold people accountable.  Prenicia Clifton is the founder of Seein’ is Believin’ where she works to address the needs of youth, including mental health, life readiness, and suicide prevention. Her goal is to make a difference in the lives of 1 million kids through culturally infused programming, policy creation, and community advocacy. She is a certified Praesidium Youth Protection Guardian and a certified Youth Mental Health First Aid trainer. Grace Panetta is a Washington, DC-based politics reporter at The 19th, a nonprofit independent newsroom covering the intersection of gender, politics and policy. 7. The Tree Sparrow: Mao's Folly and the Emu Wars AUTHOR: Stephen Moss BOOK TITLE: 10 Birds That Changed the World This excerpt details Mao's 1958 "Four Vermin" campaign targeting the Tree Sparrow. Maoordered the sparrows killed, believing they consumed grain; however, because sparrows feed their young on insects, their eradication led to an insect population boom. The subsequent crop failures caused a famine that resulted in potentially 45 to 50 million deaths, making it the worst human-created disaster in history. The segment contrasts this tragedy with the "Emu Wars" in 1930s Australia, where highly adaptable Emussuccessfully defeated the Australian army. 1938

Send us a textBefore I get in to the breakdown of this episode, I have to correct a few things that are bit embarrassing for one hosting a playwriting podcast. 1) Black Comedy was written by Peter Schaefer (Black Comedy, Equis, Amadeus). 2) After "Matisse"  is actually After Magritte and was indeed written by Tom Stoppard that was attributer to Black Comedy in this episode. I'm still trying to find the title of the one-act about the burning building. Update to come. Playwright Nick Amatuzio beamed into Playwright's Spotlight after a last minute cancellation. Nick is a former PLAY Noir submitter who is long overdue for a chat. Four seasons in, we discuss the evolution of a play through editing, avoiding scams, monetary prizes vs production, shopping for publication, expanding on historical characters and cannon, when to edit, and what a character doesn't say. We also touch on setup vs response in comedy, struggles in playwriting, the benefits of simplicity, writing farce, and the effects of changing location. As all episodes land, there is always something new to learn no matter how novice or established a playwright may be. I promise you will walk away with some nugget of insight with this latest episode. Thanks for a great start to a fourth season. It seems almost too easy to say "I believe in JESUS" and yet really impossible to follow all of the Bible's rules. As CHRIST followers our belief in JESUS is really bragging about how awesome of a Saviour HE is and thus leads us to live out our faith as fruit of that belief. Believin' and receivin', all gathered in one accord.” I can't remember the rest of the lyrics, but for some reason the catchy tune from decades ago has invaded my brain and won't go away. So, I pulled out my Bible to see where “touching and agreeing” came from and find out if it really was a command. In Matthew 18:19, the New International Version uses the phrase “agree about anything” rather than “as touching anything” like King James. The New King James Version says “that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.” From a literal standpoint, the words “about” and “concerning” are more accurate, but I love the poetry of the King James in light of the context. The verse right before Matthew 18:19 talks about binding and loosing, and the verse right after it talks about two or three gathering in the name of Jesus. Binding and loosing Touching and agreeing. Gathering and praying. What a beautiful picture that brings to my mind! I don't see a command in Matthew 18:18-20, but I do see a promise. Praying with another person about the concerns that weigh upon us not only brings unity around the circle of prayer, it also unites us with Jesus, who has promised to be in our midst as we agree in prayer. So, here's what I want you to do. Find a friend or two this week and tell them about what's concerning you. Then join your hands and bow your heads. Bind up every wicked scheme of hell and loosen every spiritual blessing from heaven. Jesus will enter into your midst and open His hand to you, and you'll discover the truth in this week's declaration. Did you know that you can also hear me in a much longer format than this podcast?
