In this episode, my friend Alex Schumacher returns to discuss his new Original Graphic Novel, The Effects of Pickled Herring. In 2024, his OGN won two national JewCE Awards from The Center for Jewish History in the categories of "All Ages" and "Autobiographical/Biographical Content." We talk about his long trek to get his OGN into readers' hands. An update-- The past 50 or so episodes are now on YouTube for free. When you get there, please like and subscribe.
On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with author/illustrator Alex Schumacher. While you would expect Schumacher's graphic novel “The Effects of Pickled Herring to be about food - and it is - it's not in the way you think. While the title dish is only mentioned a couple of times, the love and joy of food is a theme found throughout. Schumacher's semi-biographical work is a coming-of-age story about sibling dynamics, faith and family. As 12-year-old Micah and his sister Alana prepare for their B'nai Mitzvah, the family deals with his grandmother's Alzheimer's diagnosis. “[“The Effects of Pickled Herring”] is an exploration of the strength and the love of families, what can bring them together and keep them grounded in one another,” Schumacher explains. “A big part of that is food; it's the meals that you have together and it's the foods that give you comfort and heal.” Schumacher, an author/illustrator whose work has also appeared in picture books, webcomics and graphic novels, talks about his book's origins, the food-family connection, and his artistic approach. He also shares his recipe for vegan Impossible meatloaf, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. For our 3rd "Super Anti-hero" film, friend of the show, cartoonist Alex Schumacher joins us to chat about the 1994 Jim Carrey Blockbuster. Where did we stand on it then, how has it aged, and how have we aged, considering this movie is 30 years old?! WE chat about the then cutting edge CGI, the extreme 90s-ness, and ask a few vital questions about the storytelling. *Apologies, due to an ongoing & mysterious computer issue, the sound on this episode is a little rough. Alex and I reminisce over our five-year run on DECADES OF (in)EXPERIENCE. He also talks about his mentor Morrie Turner. But, more importantly, we talk about his relaunch of the MR. BUTTERCHIPS published via SLG Publishing. It's a new weekly run of insanity and is hilarious and a must-checks-out at the SLG site.
We're never going to get away from Batman are we? Oh well, at least Chaos in Gotham is based on everyone’s favorite Batman animated series. And Batman might possibly have one of the best rogue galleries in comics so you’ve got to think something could be pulled off here. Good thing we’ve got Erin from Girls Talk Comics to come help us look into the situation. So suit up, because this is a fun one. This Episode is brought to you in part by Alex Schumacher, SLG Publishing, and Mr. Butterchips. Learn such things as: Why is Joker a jerkwad? How disappointing is it that [your favorite villain] isn’t in this game? Why don’t we have more games where you can be Batgirl? And so much more! I think some of the best social commentary comes from the viewpoint of a character who can say what they want without really worrying about the consequence. Someone who can just say what’s on their mind and that’s that. Even better when it’s an animal just because I find that more entertaining. So I’m really glad that Alex Schumacher and I finally got together to talk about his new book collecting a bunch of his web comic Mr. Butterchips. Check out Mr. Butterchips for yourself by purchasing it from Amazon. You can also go take a look at Decades of (in)Experience for something a bit different. Call of Duty Review: 15:40 Alex Schumacher Interview: 28:09 Outer Worlds Review: 1:01:37 Hey all! This week we talk with Alex Schumacher. Writer and Artist of “Decades of (in)Experience” and “Mr. Butterchips. Decades follows an average 34 year old as he struggles to balance a career as a creator and a healthy relationship. It’s a story of surviving in a world that expects so much while providing little direction or help. Mr. Butterchips is reminiscent of the underground comics that started a revolution in comics bring the “kids” medium into the alleys were people were sharing truths. Mr. Butterchips shows the the world and how it works; weather or not you wanted to know. You can find Alex’s work on his site at alexschumacherart.com. Be sure to dive in the archives to experience the growth of the character and Alex as an artist. Next is our Call of Duty review. CoD returned to form with it’s latest installment, Modern Warfare. Much like it’s name sake, Modern Warfare gives you an expansive campaign that explores warfare in our times. You also get the multiplayer that made CoD a house hold name and one of Activision Blizzard’s tent pole franchises. Lastly is Outer Worlds. Obsidian Entertainment brought the heat with this answer to Fallout. They developed Fallout 1 and 2 then made Fallout New Vegas. Needless to say, they new what they were doing. With Outer Worlds, they took a familiar formula and perfected the game play, art design, and story. So basically everything. This plays much faster and almost feels lighter than simialr games. It’s Time Dilation aim assist is what VATS should be. The design of this world and it’s inhabitants is stunning. Bright and full of life. And the story has you truly weighing your option with no clear path. No black and white, all grays.

We are joined by Alex Schumacher this week to first help us recall some of the best and worst movies to be inspired by video games. We dedicate our Retro Roundtable to talking about films like Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros., Resident Evil, and the new Sonic The Hedgehog movie posters we’ve been seeing. Let us know your favorite movie spawned by a video game on Facebook and Twitter! Then we turn our attention to Alex and talk about his webcomics he has available at AlexSchumacherArt.com. Decades of (in)Experience is not strictly a traditional comic to begin with, this illustrated narrative follows the weekly antics of Luke Carlin, a thirty-something who hasn’t quite figured it out. Like a lot of us he lives on the paycheck-to-paycheck merry-go-round, numbing his emotions and trying not to think about the mess that is his own existence. The comic strip Mr. Butterchips appears monthly in the Drunk Monkeys literary magazine. The series recounts the titular (and cuddly) curmudgeon’s pursuit of love and happiness as he rails against the madness and mundanity of everyday life. These are comics you won’t want to miss! @AlexSchumacherArt @AntixPress CannedAirPodcast.com @CannedAirPod @Canned_Air If you’d like to show your support, you can either visit our Patreon page at Patreon.com/CannedAirPod or you can leave us a review on iTunes! Alex Schumacher (Decades of (in)Experience, Mr. Butterchips) and I wrap up our career survival training talk with harsh truths about brutal honesty, pushing yourself to get your best, but only in a nice way, and intentionally working to make something outside of the "industry norm" whatever the industry. We also cover placing the right limits on yourself, tailoring your world to support you, finding the right relationships to provide that support, and that basically, though Murphy's Law may rule the day, Occam's Razor is the rule in the land of the creative-story arts: the simplest answer, (in this case most efficient and healthiest too,) is often the right answer. It's another hilarious riff fest surrounding and binding a deeply insightful look at maintaining your career and self over the long haul. Illustrator Alex Schumacher (Decades of (in)Experience, Mr. Butterchips) and I shared libations and laughs a plenty as we discussed the hidden difficulties of an art career, losing and regaining your confidence after going "pro", and the seemingly thankless moments of making art. We also talk autobiographical work, subverting the usual comic book formats, growing (mostly) out of superhero comics, and making something personal. Then things get personal as we foray into managing the highs and lows of the job, integrating experiences into our work, and being patient with ourselves. This is one helluva fun time at the podcast, and it's also a straight up therapy session... but with laughs! If you have ever struggled to keep going, or to regain your focus in tough times, we are talking to/with you in this one. Stay tuned for part 2 in just a couple short days! This week we speak to three talented artists, Bridget Spicer, Rafael Estrada, and Alex Schumacher. All three were kind enough to lend their talents to a benefit to raise money for the local chapter of the ACLU a few weeks back. We talk to all three about the role the current political climate has had on their art. We touch on the relevance of graphic novels and the respect they have for a few in particular and how the cartoon medium does not get the same respect it does in other countries. Find out if there are Easter eggs lurking in their work and their varying opinions on the work being done by indy artists today. Dom and Walter find themselves a bit afraid to play an indy developed game that puts you in quite an uncomfortable role. It's a drawn out episode as this week we speak to these local artists. This week, we welcome Alex Schumacher to the XL Publichouse. Alex is a local cartoonist/writer/dude on his grind. He shares with us his projects that can be found at AlexSchumacherArt.com and they have a little something for everyone. We hear about the work goes into writing a non-traditional, illustrated narrative called Decades of (in)Experience. They follow the life and times of one Luke Carlin, and you might find some familiar themes that we have all experienced in retail 9-5s. We get into another project of Alex's, Mr. Butterchips, and Dom is excited to find that he can purchase Mr. Buttercups merch. Word to the wise, if you get some merch, he will include a hand-drawn sketch, bonus! If you are trying to break into the comic/graphic novel biz, you can even check out Alex's column, Bread Crumbs From the Void, in Five2One Magazine. There he offers up tips and advice on what it takes to put out your own work and do it consistently. Listen in and share this episode of Call It What You Will with our guest, Alex Schumacher!
