Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! Nelda made the swift four-block trek from the bus stop at the corner of Maple and Pine, to her building. Although she was quick, she was mindful of the small grocery bag bumping against her hip. It was nearly dark and Aunt Cass would be pacing, not so much from the worry about her 17-year-old niece, but for the crusty bread and fresh butter Cass needed to get super on the table. Granted super was only for Nelda, who was rarely hungry, and Cass herself. Since Granddaddy had passed, the apartment was much quieter, sadder, but still, home. Nelda turned the keys in the locks and hollered through the hallway, “Aunt Cass, I'm home!” Get your copy of Well, Girl here! Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! I could feel the heat from the hardware store's stove warming my feet as I sat on the couch in our second floor apartment. My toes nearly glowed with happiness. In such heat a body could nearly forget the cardboard covered holes in her shoes and the snow outside the window. A body could nearly forget everything. I touched the corner of wool blankets next to me and brushed lint off the red box on top. Well, nearly. Mama always said, “Lucille, honey, we're lucky to have the store.” She'd brush my wild curls into submission and tell me that other folks would love this here place even with the oily smell. Or some days, she'd say they'd like it even with the chipped walls or with all the men hanging around outside looking for work from any fortunate builder or handyman with a job big enough to hire extra hands. I don't know who she was trying to convince. Maybe herself or my older brother, George. I don't think either of them liked their jobs in the family business. But I certainly didn't need telling. I loved Miles Hardware. Three stories of rising red brick between the white clapboard buildings... Get your copy of Well, Girl here! At the end of every show, we will leave you with a quality question to ponder. This week's story is an original story by Dreams by Suzann Smith read by Jami Amerine Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! “Good morning,” Sammie grunted in reply to the entirely too cheerful “Good Morning, Mommy!” she had received from the little pixie who had come to steal her sleep. “Mommy!” The little creature continued with all the cheer and joy that no one ought to possess before 7am. Pulling on the sheets and blankets, trying to dislodge her still slumbering mother, the eager little cherub raised the volume and the enthusiasm. “Mommy! Let's make breakfast!” With a grumbled reply that might have passed for agreement, Sammie rolled herself out of bed and stumbled off to make coffee in vain hopes that the warmth of the coffee would somehow make up for the loss of the warmth of her beloved bed. As the fog of sleep began to lift, Sammie began to contemplate her day. As was often the case, she tried to push aside her thoughts of what she should be doing with her day, her life. The thoughts poured in, unbidden, the moment she rose from her bed each morning. She tried not to stare at the giant elephant in the room. No. Like literally, the giant stuffed elephant her eldest daughter had dragged home from somewhere so many years ago and that had been hugged and loved by first one child, and then another until its neck was broken and floppy from so much mauling. That elephant, who had so carelessly been left out at bedtime last night, was a metaphor, Sammie thought, for her own mauled and broken spirit. Years of life's circumstances had pulled and tugged at her dreams and plans until her spirit was bent over and hanging, unable to rise to the occasion, looking worn and pathetic. What had become of her life? Her dreams? What even were her dreams? Did she even have any dreams? She once had, hadn't she… That career, that marriage, those children. She had, in fact, had those dreams. Years ago.... Show sponsor: SocialWisedU SocialWisedU e-course will guide your family toward a healthy relationship with social media and each other. This week's story is an original story by Adelaide's Sanctuary by Erica Brock read by Jami Amerine Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! Adelaide lay upon her canopy bed holding a cold compress to her cheek. She waited for the pain to subside but the chilly fabric could not soothe the throbbing wound that went deeper. This most recent strike from her father bruised the center of her heart. She rested her head on her pillow and let the tears flow and the memories of better times come flooding back. It was five years ago that she was a small child of six. She was wearing her favorite blue dress and sitting upon her grandpa's knee as he read her his favorite Bible stories… “Once you can read for yourself, Addie, you will learn many stories. They will guide you through each path of your life.” Adelaide's eyes grew wide and she smiled. “More stories of war, and plagues?” Grandpa laughed heartily and smoothed her ruffled hair. “Oh, Addie. Perhaps tomorrow we will move ahead to some tamer stories. Your father would not want you learning to be a warrior. It isn't proper training for a young English lady.” He gave her a wink. She sighed. “I guess you are right, Grandfather. But, let us never stop reading.” He smiled down at her... Reid Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! Hi. My name is Gracie. Well, that's my new name since he came and saved me from that awful place where they were killing me every day. I'm sure I would have died there if he had not come. Who is he? His name is Michael. He is my angel. I'm an English Bulldog and this is my story. For eighteen months I had the same life every day. I woke up and went out a little door to some rocky ground where I would “do my business” as Michael calls it, and then wait for someone to bring me some food. I would only see them pass by as they dropped off my portion in my dish. I don't know their name because they didn't talk to me. It was usually a man in a yellow coat... A couple of times he took me out of my home into a dark building where he would tie me up and another dog would come in with me. I didn't like that at all. I was so scared! When the man in the yellow coat was done with me, he would put me back in my home and then come check me every week. Reid Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! "If trees represented families, Brie imagined hers as a poor neglected sapling with one little branch. She grew up as an only child without any cousins around. Brie's mother had been too caught up in her own life goals - or lack of goals, perhaps - to stop and share family history. Brie had wondered about extended family, about where the rest of the relatives lived, and what history there was in her family. Her mother always dismissed her questions if she tried probing. Moreover, Brie's father hadn't stayed long enough to make much of a place in her history..." At the end of every show, we will leave you with a quality question to ponder. This week's story is being read by Katie M. Reid with our third place fiction contest winner Carrie Cox with her story, Momma Knows Best... Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! My best friend Liz and I parked outside Mississippi College to watch their men's soccer game. Our friend Bo had just made the team and we wanted to support him. Plus, Liz had a humongous crush on him. It was hot and humid, so we sat behind the goal on the hill under the shade. During the game, Liz turned to me and said, “Do you see #11?” I quickly answered, “Yep. He's good.” “He's fine as wine,” she said with eyebrows up. I chuckled and wondered if she would think the same if we saw him up close. We rarely agreed on much of anything, especially boys. After the game ended, we decided to wait on Bo to congratulate him and say hi…you know, just to be polite. We hoped he wouldn't have plans that night so we could hang out... Welcome to A Remarkable Thought: A short story podcast to engage your mind and lift your spirit—a production of changeyourmindchangeeverything.org. In a world that runs on 5G, caffeine, obligations, shoulds, shouldn'ts, woulds, and wouldn'ts we've created a space where you can relax, laugh and think for yourself. Each week we will bring you a refreshing escape where your mind can wander in a thoughtful story as you visit wonders yet to be considered. At the end of every show, we will leave you with a quality question to ponder. This week's host is Katie M. Reid with a special reading from her book, A Very Baviarian Christmas! Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! Behold, She Will Be Called Holly couldn't believe this was her actual life. She begrudgingly tied on her red apron and plastered on a forced, albeit festive, smile as she pushed through the swinging doors that led from the break room to the sprawling showroom of Neumann's, otherwise known as the mile- long Christmas store. Every hour, on the hour, a message rang throughout the store: “Willkommen to Neumann's—a mile of Christmas joy for every girl and boy. Whether you're one or a hundred and two, we've got something special just for you. Happy shopping!” As she made her way to her work station in Section 8, Holly wondered why on earth she let her mother talk her into working at Neumann's. “It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” swelled from the rafters, but a “Bah humbug!” anthem retorted in Holly's heart. This was never the plan. Show sponsor: SocialWisedU SocialWisedU e-course will guide your family toward a healthy relationship with social media and each other. Rosa Martines pulled the kitchen door closed, shoved, and turned the key in all 5 locks. She reached on her tippy toes and tugged at the worn rope of the security gate. Her tired bones, raged against her as she bent to lock the gate and struggled to pick up her dinner, two Tupperware containers she'd filled with beans. Arepas, pulled pork, and the last of the day's tamales. The old woman audibly growled as she stood and arched her aching back, satisfied her corner of 9th and Main was secure... Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! Trina's Cool Party Trick It wasn't the sort of thing you'd put on a job resume, or something that you'd lead with after an introductory handshake, and it definitely wasn't something you should include on your Tinder account for that matter, unless you wanted to scare away any semblance of an eligible, sane, and semi-attractive bachelor. But it definitely came in handy from time to time, for Trina LeBeau—especially in a pinch. In order to better understand Trina's superpower, or rather, her cool party trick, you need to first understand a bit about Trina herself. Raised in Savannah, GA, under Spanish moss that triggered her allergies but proved fodder for her active imagination and romantic notions, Trina was one-of-a-kind. With wild, fiery curls that would not be tamed in the southern humidity, by comb or will, Trina tried to hide behind her unruly locks. Her mama forbid shears come near Trina's head, as if she'd lose her strength like Samson from those Sunday School stories at 1st Presbyterian... Are you a fiction writer? As best she could tell, she was on her second day of the ultimate game of limbo. Not dead. Not with the people she loved in the home she adored. Not heaven, not hell… a purgatory of sorts. The blood on her head had completely caked over, leaving a mass of Becca's long auburn hair in a stiff, make-shift bandage over her wound. Her medical experience led her to believe the head injury would be too late for stitches. And there was a familiar companion, panic... Are you a fiction writer? Well, have we got a treat for you! Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! Unbeknownst to Becca Part One Darkness. Complete and total blackness was all that Becca Gladstill could make out. The 37-year-old mother of 4 was what she would describe as “average.” Married too young, saved by grace, grit, and the skin of her teeth, Becca had two sons Blake and Ben with her first husband before he literally took the money and ran. Leaving her penniless, husbandless with a two-year-old and a newborn to fend for themselves. Back then, at 22 she couldn't have imagined just five years later, she would be a college graduate, a dental hygienist, at a thriving pediatric dental practice, and remarried to a gorgeous podiatrist from the medical mall where she worked. 10 months and 9 days after their honeymoon/family vacation to Florida, something “Doc,” as Becca referred to her new husband, Nick had insisted upon, Becca gave birth to an 11 pound, 9-ounce baby girl. Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! Stevie's Serendipity Of all the ridiculous scenarios Stevie Waldrop had gotten herself into, her current situation would be hard to beat. Perhaps she would never tell. Who was she kidding? This would probably be one of those viral social media stories, leaked by her gossip thriving sister, who by now, knew that Stevie was stranded on the Spanish island of Mallorca. At 46 years old, Stevie would have never imagined herself calling her 78-year-old father, at home in Ohio to say, “Hey Daddy, I missed my cruise ship's departure at one of the ports. I am stuck with only the small amount of cash in my fanny pack, my passport and wallet are on the ship. I got a hold of the cruise line and I have to wait two days for the next ship… could you wire me some money?” Her father, ever the jokester, had sarcastically answered, “Who is this?” Her mother had jumped on the line and reprimanded her about leaving the ship without her ID, her persistent tardiness, and a lack of sound judgment. Stevie had answered the accusations as if she were 9-years-old and missed the school bus again, “Yes, mama.” Show sponsor: SocialWisedU SocialWisedU e-course will guide your family toward a healthy relationship with social media and each other. Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! Lottie wins the Lottery Lottie was late again. She grabbed her coffee from the formica-counter top and hurried down the stairs of her tri-level home, willing the steaming beverage, with two creamers and one sugar, not to escape its barrier. She stepped over stray toys and an overstuffed school backpack. She had trained herself to avoid eye contact with the cobwebs and dust that collected in the corners of the stairs. Shoot! Lottie headed back up the stairs to retrieve her binder for work. The one she had put down in order to stir her coffee. The coffee which she was eyeing like a hawk, so she didn't spill on her blazer. Why didn't I listen to my mother-in-law when she tried to talk us out of a tri-level. So many stairs! I mean my calves look pretty good but, even though I hate to admit it, she was right. Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! Destination Destiny When she imagined her feet, she pictured them swollen to the size of two loaves of bread. They throbbed. Literally, her feet were throbbing in her overpriced work shoes. The shoes cost her a full day's wages. They had barely been of any help. Destiny was on her feet at least 10 hours a day. On this day, she limped home in agony. Not only had the shoes failed to make her day at the cafe less painful, but they also afforded her a wicked blister as well. Her long brunette hair was escaping the confines of her management required bun. As it blew in the warm June breeze, the smell of grease from the cafe's kitchen flooded her. Discouragement chased her down the block. She felt all the pangs of failure, well, she was the quintessential 22-year-old waitress, down on her life and luck. She proded herself. “Come on Destiny, you're almost there.” Through weary eyes, she could barely see the porch of her family's Bronx brownstone. As her destination grew more feasible, dread assaulted her. Show sponsor: SocialWisedU SocialWisedU e-course will guide your family toward a healthy relationship with social media and each other. Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! Everly's Escape The crowded room erupted in laughter. Sheepishly, Everly sipped her zinfandel. The cool, sweet drink must've paled in comparison to her burning, flushed cheeks. Then came the “nudge, nudge,” she was most accustomed to, followed by the words she'd memorized, “I am just kidding Ev.” Everly, gave a fraudulent grin, polished off her wine, and stepped away from the crowd. She headed to the balcony for a gulp of late-night, Aspen air. In spite of the hum of the party, Everly only heard the majestic stillness of her favorite place on the planet. Born and raised in Aspen, Colorado, she was a local. And in Aspen, you are either a local, a transplant, or a tourist. A gust of mountain-high February wind swirled about her, cold enough to chase a tourist inside, but exactly the refreshment Everly craved. A voice from behind her gave her a startle. “Everly? You okay?” Barely glancing over her shoulder, she acknowledged the familiar voice of the hostess of the intimate party, the beautiful, Aspen socialite Madeline Murph. Madeline was also Everly's boss and the owner of the real estate agency where Everly had worked for the last 9 years ... This week's host is Jami Amerine with a original story she wrote called, Goldie gets Grateful. Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! "Traffic was a beast. The loop was at a standstill. Goldie drummed her fingers on the steering wheel, then rifled through the console of her Camry, looking for… anything. Half of a Cliff bar, an empty container of Altoids, and a licorice sucker. “Licorice sucker, who in their right mind...” She trailed off, recounting the fit her 2-year-old daughter had thrown, after too long at the pediatrician with the despicable reward of a licorice sucker. The fowl compensation clung to the felt lining of the console. The growl of her stomach wasn't persuasive enough to convince Goldie to pry the sucker from its landing. Nor was it strong enough to lure her to gnaw on the Cliff bar she'd found repugnant the last time she'd attempted to appease her appetite in traffic. “COME ON!” She bellowed at no one. “I wish I was a Jedi.” Again, only herself to hear her..." At the end of every show, we will leave you with a quality question to ponder. This week's host is Jami Amerine with an original story she wrote called, Balanced Blair. Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! "The worn red carpet of the little chapel in the woods held many secrets. If it could speak it would tell the stories of weddings, funerals, baptisms, scandal, restoration, who really knows what else? Blair stared mindlessly at her white satin shoes. She had decided to go with the one-and-a-half-inch heel. Really, any taller, and she would trip down the aisle, rather than glamorously glide. Besides, there was no point in pretending her groom wasn't a full foot taller than her. She habitually crossed her ankles, reconsidering the taupe stockings she had chosen. “Get a grip, no one will care about your pantyhose, Blair. Although… the sheer buff.” She stopped herself. One of the goals she had recently set for herself was to be more precise. Either that or to be more flexible..." Take a beat, take a breath, and listen in! "Serenity was tired. Bombarded by information and surrounded by noise—deafening noise, she couldn't hear herself think. “Where did I put my noise-canceling headphones?” she asked herself. The activities and appointments on her calendar no longer fit into neat and tidy boxes. They spilled over into the margins, choking out the whitespace and cluttering Serenity's vision—even when she wore her new trendy frames..."
