Why do we keep drinking even when we know it's hurting us? For Sammie, the answer lay beneath the surface—in the pain she hadn't faced. Her story shows how unresolved trauma leads to drinking and how ignoring what hurts often feels safer than healing. Until it doesn't. In this episode, she opens up about what it took to stop numbing and start living fully. In this raw and real conversation, Annie and Sammie unpack how unresolved trauma leads to drinking and what it means to finally feel your feelings without fear. From parenting through grief to starting over at 49, Sammie's story is a powerful reminder that it's never too late to break old cycles. In this episode, Annie and Sammie discuss: Early alcohol exposure and teen drinking Losing both parents in 19 days Why drinking became her emotional escape What grief looked like in real life What made her stop for good The power of The PATH and the community Experiencing her first alcohol-free festivals Using nursing experience to help others detox safely Finding meaning in coaching and service How unresolved trauma shows up in everyday choices Why it's never too late to change And other topics… Episode links: Sammie's Sober Heroes - https://www.sammiessoberheroes.com/Start reading This Naked Mind - https://thisnakedmind.com/bookJoin The Path - https://go.tnmprograms.com/the-path-from-this-naked-mind

Anne and Ryan take a bite out of Ryan Coogler's new vampire picture, SINNERS starring Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell and Delroy Lindo. Coogler wrote and directed this original Southern Gothic horror tale of twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Jordan), returning to the Mississippi Delta to open a juke joint. When their cousin Sammie is recruited to play the blues guitar, a supernatural power is unleashed that attracts darks forces. Coogler's movie is a bold genre mashup of horror, musical, and period drama that has cast a spell on critics and audiences alike, but do Anne and Ryan think SINNERS is to die for? Or do they they think it sucks? Listen as we unpack Coogler's latest, taking diversions into credit sequences, Hallmark movies, oral sex, Black Bag, Robert Eggers, and much, much more!SINNERS is currently in theaters.
Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Sinners is a fantastic drama, a killer horror movie, and a great vampire story - but it's something else too. Cam argues that the film feels almost like a blues biopic, going beyond Sammie's story to chart the story of the genre itself. Using plot analysis and personal anecdotes, we investigate the magic and myth of Ryan Coogler's latest masterpiece. Some stories we inherit. Some are whispered through family trees. Others are passed down through song—riffs on pain, echoes of joy, blue notes of survival. In Ryan Coogler's Sinners, we get all three. And this month, The Film Board—Pete, Tommy, and Andy—gathers to talk about a film that bends genres, then drips them in blood and gospel and IMAX-saturated twilight. This is a vampire movie. But not really. It's a family tragedy. And a juke joint musical. And a war story. And a funeral procession through America's haunted South. Coogler takes us to 1930s Mississippi, hands us twin bootleggers with hearts full of grief and bravado, and a blues prodigy whose voice can wake the dead—literally. From there, Sinners unfolds like folklore remembered through firelight and whispered across generations. In this conversation, the gang goes deep:The political subtext of assimilation, vampirism, and cultural erasureHow Coogler's personal history shaped the film's emotional centerMichael B. “I grew up my entire life going to church and never knew there was a pro-life movement. And if I would have thought there was one, I would have just assumed that the movement was picketers outside abortion clinics because that's all the media shows us. But the first time I was invited to a pro-life conference, I was blown away. I had no idea that there are thousands of organizations and people that are boots on the ground, helping women be brave and choose life in the most creative ways!" -Amy Ford, Author + President of Embrace GraceGoing through an unplanned pregnancy herself, Amy Ford knows what it feels like to experience shame and loneliness with nowhere to turn to for guidance, support and direction. You'll here her story in our conversation - how God intervened and saved her baby. She married her high school sweetheart, Ryan Ford, and they faced their unexpected pregnancy together. Looking back on that season of brokenness fueled their passion and desire to change things for young women with unplanned pregnancies. In 2008, Amy and her friend Salina, started a small group at her local church that met weekly with girls in that same situation providing support, friendship, guidance and love. A few years later in 2012, Embrace Grace was formed, a national non profit to equip churches all around the nation to have a pro-love focus and help women be brave and choose life. Since then, thousands of women have gone through the Embrace Grace program and were put back on a path towards Jesus. In today's episode, Amy and Sammie talk about what it means to be proactive and pro-life. Sammie Ellard-King, a UK-based entrepreneur with a background in hospitality and financial education, has dedicated himself to improving financial literacy for young adults. Having experienced financial struggles firsthand, he understands the importance of making financial education accessible and engaging. Through his venture, Up the Gains, King offers valuable resources to help young people navigate the complexities of credit, budgeting, and investing, aiming to empower them to make informed financial decisions early in life. King is working to introduce financial education in UK schools and is actively pursuing discussions with local MPs to make this a national priority. Alcohol is embedded in our culture… not just the high spirits in your town centre on a Friday night, but virtually any social or work event that you can attend. So if everyone is doing it, what could possibly go wrong, right? And how about in your relationship? Have you ever done anything while drinking that you regretted, even something that harmed your relationship? Where is the line between a bit of harmless fun, and a habit that could lead to real issues for you and in your relationship? Is there a healthy level of alcohol which could be beneficial for us? Sammie Clarke is an alcohol detox coach who has worked in addiction for 25 years, having worked with literally thousands of people on the journey to freedom! We are going to be looking at: - How does alcohol consumption affect relationships, especially when there are challenges - What exactly is Alcohol Use Disorder, and how do people get affected by alcohol differently even with the same consumption - How alcohol can impact on our freedom, even if we're not actively drinking and what does true liberation mean? - How social attitudes are changing, in the same way that the harm of smoking is better understood now that it was in the past - What is a safe or healthy level of alcohol and what does the research show us? Kim and Ket Stay Alive... Maybe: A Horror Movie Comedy Podcast
Ket tells Kim about Black Christmas (1974) in honor of our beloved Sammie, Mac Parker, who campaigned his heart out for this Holiday Horror pick in our Patreon poll. At the time we recorded this, the girls never could have predicted that it would end up being a tribute to the memory of Olivia Hussey. Among her many accomplishments, she was also the reason Ketryn realized that sexuality was a spectrum. Most importantly, rest in eternal peace, our Juliet, our Final Girl, Jess Bradford, the effervescent Olivia Hussey.Dir.
