Welcome back to Monsters Up North!
In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Father Sammie Maletta, author and long-time pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish in St. John, Indiana to talk about making Catholics into intentional disciples of Christ. With decades of experience in pastoral ministry, Fr. Maletta brings a wealth of experience and knowledge on why some parishes and parishioners are filled with the Spirit while others are asleep at the wheel, what it takes to move a casual Catholic into discipleship, and what makes Catholicism so appealing to potential converts and non-Catholic Christians. We dig in deeply into the world is discipleship through a Catholic lens with an eye to our non-Catholic brothers and sisters who are wondering, as many do: Can Catholics really be disciples of Christ?!For more from Fr. King Charles and Queen Camilla are on their four-day state visit to the United States. Today King Charles will address the US Congress. But at the same time, survivors of the late paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and the family of one of his most prominent victims, Virginia Giuffre, have urged the King to meet them during his state visit. A round table featuring Epstein survivors is planned ahead of his meeting to Congress. An amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill will remove criminal liability for women who end their own pregnancies. But while supporters of the bill believe this is about preventing vulnerable women from being prosecuted, critics argue that it risks reducing safeguards and say the change hasn't had sufficient scrutiny. We hear from Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi and historian Dr Jessica Cox from Brunel University. Millions of Indians have been voting in elections across five states in a set of contests. We'll look at why the number of female voters in India has significantly increased in the last few decades - outnumbering male voters in the last general election - and how the female vote is changing politics in India.Single-use plastic waste was found on 97% of the beaches surveyed by the Marine Conservation Society in the UK and Channel Islands last year. Welcome to Afternoon Tea w/ Killah Bee! ☕️
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Pamela Kyel, author of the book On a Break in Charm City. Award-winning author Pamela Kyel was born and raised in Edgewood, Maryland—north of Charm City. It's kind of a running joke that when you live near a large, well-known city, you tell people that's where you're from. So, unofficially, she's from Baltimore! She followed the drum of the Air Force for 25 years. She joined her husband on six assignments—OCONUS (Outside Continental United States), aka overseas, and CONUS (Continental United States). Along the way, they added two children and numerous pets, not counting the half-a-dozen cats that came with their house in Italy. She has traveled extensively across the states and Europe, with her favorite overseas locations being Paris and Slovenia, among stateside favorites such as Rocky Mountain National Park and Door County, Wisconsin. Family is important to her, and nowhere is that more evident than in her Charm City Mystery Series. When you've lived across the world from mothers and brothers, you adapt and overcome. You create family—and they stay with you long after the career ends. Her military family resides in Virginia, Texas, and North and South Carolina—with many still on active duty worldwide. Writing came out of their duty station in Illinois. She picked up her computer while sitting with her elementary-age child through covid classes and thought, I can write a book. And the rest is history. While her original novel will never see the light of day, she grew and expanded her confidence in what she was doing. She was good at this, and she would have something to show for it one day. In a little over three years, she'd trod the agent querying circuit and amended her goal. Now, she just needed to hold her book in her hand. It was necessary. With that in mind, she sent out three queries to small publishers, and for her, the third time was the charm. The Wild Rose Press picked up her book and offered a contract. Less than a year later, she now held all those years of hard work in her hand. In my book review, I stated On a Break in Charm City is a cozy mystery by Pamela Kyel. This is the third in her Charm City Mystery series, and once again, Pamela does not disappoint! I love this cast of characters including Laci Duval, an investigator with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. However, she is forced to take a vacation. But if you know Laci, you know she doesn't do relaxation. Instead, she finds looking for a missing person who just happens to be NSA. Laci is funny, clutzy, a bit socially awkward, and thinks of everyone as a type of iced tea. In this installment, we continue her journey with potential love interest, Antonio, and keep up with her best friends Sammie and Cassy, as well as Rev and, new to this series, his brother Lum. If you like a good mystery, with twists and turns, break-ins, fires, kidnapping, computer programming, surveillance cameras, trackers, and even Russians, then this is the cozy for you! In this episode, we sit down with Sammie Ellard-King, a personal finance educator who went from 24,000 pounds in debt to building one of the most trusted voices in UK money education. Sammie breaks down why most people don't understand their relationship with money, how he went from reckless spending to financial awareness, and the exact systems anyone can use to take control of their finances in under 10 minutes. We discuss why the school system fails to teach money basics, the psychology behind impulse spending, and how to stop yourself from buying things you'll regret the next morning. He explains the three bank system that works whether you're in debt or have millions, why buying a house isn't always the investment people think it is, and how to use credit cards without destroying your life. Sammie also shares his thoughts on AI's impact on the economy, why traditional pension thinking might not make sense anymore, and why having an emergency fund is more important than any investment strategy. If you're struggling with debt, confused about where to start with money, or just want to understand how to build financial security without feeling judged, this episode will give you the clarity and tools to take your first step. In today's episode, I'm bringing in my whole team of practitioners - Darby, Sammie, and Elizabeth - for our first "Ask the Practitioners" episode where we're tackling all your weight loss questions. We're covering everything from the biggest misconceptions at every age and stage, to why your metabolism isn't actually slowing down the way you think it is, and what supplements you really need versus what's just clever marketing. We're busting myths about spot reduction, talking about why alcohol and poor sleep are doing way more damage than that piece of cheesecake, and getting real about why you might gain weight when you start lifting (and why that's actually a good thing). This conversation spans from women in their twenties dealing with overbooking and comparison stress, to women in their forties and fifties who've been told the same advice for decades that isn't working anymore. If you've ever wondered why nothing seems to be working, or why you feel stuck despite doing "all the right things," this episode is going to give you some serious clarity on what your body actually needs at your specific stage of life. Editor - Michael P. Shawver Sinners editor Michael Shawver has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with his former USC classmate, director Ryan Coogler. Together the two have collaborated on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and now Sinners. Their past experience on both VFX-heavy films like Black Panther, as well as socio-political dramas like Fruitvale Station, would prove invaluable as they worked to blend the real horror of racial injustice with the fantastical horror of a vampire onslaught. Taking place in 1932, Sinners follows identical twins, and World War I veterans, Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore as they return to Clarksdale, Mississippi after spending seven years in Chicago. Using money stolen from criminal syndicates, they purchase a sawmill from a landowner to start a juke joint for the local Black community. Their younger cousin Sammie, a singer and guitarist, joins them despite his pastor father's warnings about the sins of blues music. His warnings would prove prophetic, as the twins and their friends face foes both familiar and supernatural. MICHAEL P. SHAWVER Originally from Rhode Island, Sinners editor Michael Shawver developed an early working relationship with director Ryan Coogler during their time together at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. Shawver initially edited Coogler's short film, Fig, and later went on to cut his feature debut, Fruitvale Station, starring Michael B. Jordan. The film garnered two of the Sundance Film Festival's top prizes, the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize, and went on to receive numerous awards and nominations at film festivals worldwide. Shawver also edited All Summers End, a debut feature film by director Kyle Wilamowski; Warren, by director Alex Beh; Tell, for director J.M.R. Luna; and Fourth Man Out, for Andrew Nackman. Shawver's next collaboration with Coogler and Jordan was Creed, for which he received a nomination for Best Editing in the Independent Critics Poll. Michael then reunited with Coogler and Jordan on Black Panther, a box office smash, which was nominated an outstanding 43 times, including for Best Picture at the Academy Awards and Best Motion Picture Drama at the Golden Globes. His work on this project also earned him a Saturn Award Nomination for Best Editing and an Alliance of Women Film Journalists Nomination for the Best Editing EDA Award. In addition, the film won Movie of the Year at the AFI Awards. Following Black Panther, Shawver edited A Quiet Place: Part II, directed by John Krasinski. He later returned to the Marvel universe for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, again collaborating with Coogler and Jordan. Shawver's recent work includes Abigail, a genre-bending thriller directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. He is currently editing The Thomas Crown Affair directed by and starring Michael B. Jordan.
