The pilots started their jet engines on a runway in the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai on Wednesday. But they were not preparing to fly an aircraft. Knowing what it is like to have lost my father and son to murder, a hate crime, in fact, I often hear from others, “I can’t imagine.” My response may come across too practiced...because it is. “I hope you never have, too”, is what flows from my mouth in return.Jennifer Ross, President & CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg, Pennsylvania was prompted to place me on a stage with a five-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee and internationally recognized human rights activist, Izzeldin Abuelaish, MD in November 2019. She had read his book, “I Shall Not Hate; A Gaza Doctor’s Journey” outlining the three tragic murders of Besan (20), Maya (15), and Aya (14), three of Izzeldin’s daughters and his niece, Noor (17), by an Israeli tank in Gaza on January 16, 2009. Izzeldin is Palestinian. His book is heart wrenching and detailed as he takes us through his childhood to the trials of medical school, all while living life as a refugee. Yet, his inspiring heart warms us in every chapter of his life because Izzeldin takes the challenges presented and transforms them to life.I was honored that Jenn Ross saw me in a similar light and agreed to join their event. Upon meeting Izzeldin I almost said, “I can’t imagine”. Dr. Jennifer Ross is a Professor in the Department of Physics at Syracuse University. Through her research, Jenny is working to better understand how living things can organize themselves. An animal starts with one cell and then develops into a full organism through self-organization and self-assembly. Jenny and her lab are working to identify simple rules and develop models using physics to explain how biological processes work. In her free time, Jenny enjoys doing activities with her two kids. They’ve been having fun engaging in science-related activities like visiting volcanoes and watching the solar eclipse a few years ago. Jenny also loves watching TV, listening to podcasts, and reading, particularly when the subject is science fiction. Jenny received her BA in physics and mathematics from Wellesley College, and her PhD in physics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Afterwards, she conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania. Jenny joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2007, and she just recently moved to Syracuse to accept her current position there. Jenny has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including a National Science Foundation INSPIRE Award, a Cottrell Scholars Award, a Scialog Fellowship, the Margaret Oakley Dayhoff Award from the Biophysical Society, and the Basil O’Connor Starter Award from the March of Dimes Foundation. In addition, Jenny is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. In our interview, she will tell us more about her life and science.

Stress and feelings of anxiousness are probably the most prevalent life altering obstacles in society today. Stress can have so many physical and emotional effects on us and it seems be a constant among many people today. Learnig how to be aware of and reduce stress is something that we could all probably benefit from, but for many people learning how to cope with, reduce and balance the stress in their lives is a necessity to being happy and balanced. There are many ways of dealing with feelings of anxiousness, worry and stress and one of those ways is with biofeedback. We'll talk with Jennifer Ross, RN and owner of Intentional Balancing, who uses Biofeedback in her paractice to find out more about it and exactly how it works to reduce stress and help people find balance. Jennifer will tell her own story and why she is dedicated to helping others reduce stress in their own lives.

For the past 16 years, Jennifer has been in the healthcare field of nursing.  She had been feeling a desire for change, not only in her own health but in her career as well, so she made the decision to leave nursing to pursue Biofeedback.  Jennifer wanted a way to work on the root cause, not just symptom management any longer.  She was introduced to Biofeedback and was drawn in by the many ways to reduce stress and balance the body.  As a Certified Biofeedback Technician, Jennifer supports her clients holistically in regaining their health.  Jennifer also believes that our emotions play a bigger role in our overall health than previously thought.  The thoughts and beliefs we hold from past experiences shape who we are and can impact our overall health in so many ways.  By learning to change our thoughts and negative beliefs to healthier patterns, we can improve our lives.Biofeedback can not only support your body/mind/spirit during times of illness or stress but the effects have a ripple effect that help your body to heal in more ways than just physically.

Today’s question is one that I need to hear the advice on. In our fast-paced, busy culture, how do we make our kids a priority by actually spending quality time with them? I’m with my kids all day long, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m spending quality time with them.  Quality Time With Your Kids Here’s the question I had for Jennifer:  “With five kids, I can sometimes feel the strain of spending time with each one and making sure they each get some ‘mommy time’. With 11 kids, I’m sure you are familiar with this struggle!
