Coach Like A Champion

On this episode of Coach Like a Champion, we have Elgin High School's offensive coordinator, Adam Castro, as our guest. His Elgin Owls won the 4A State Championship this past season, 2024. His roots stem from Lawton, and he has been at Elgin for the full rebuild, helping get them to the top. He discusses the special group that got them there and tough lessons learned along the way. He specializes with the O-Line and gives a lot of credit to his head coach. You guys are going to love everything he has to say! Here we go!!

Coach Schneider is the offensive coordinator at Bixby High School in Bixby, Oklahoma. He has won numerous State Championships and assisted in establishing one of the most dominant and well-ran programs in Oklahoma football state history. His counter schemes are very well known and have gone viral. Coach Schneider shares with Bo his coaching journey and some practice methods. Sha'Hada is the Director of Athletic Performance at Tulsa University. He is in his first year there with his priority being the women's basketball team. Coach Trent Earley was just promoted to the Co-Defensive Coordinator at the well-known and consistently successful D-2 program, Valdosta State University in Georgia. He also runs the special teams and coaches the linebackers. Bo knows him from Earley's early coaching days at Oklahoma Baptist University. Coach Edward Morgan started off in the business world working in downtown Dallas, Texas. Friday Night Lights kept calling him back to the game he loved and Texas high school football lived up to the hype! He did whatever it took to get into coaching, and continues to do whatever it takes to help the players and fulfill his goals of being a coach. He has made a couple of stops coaching in Texas. Kimes Gilbert is the head football coach at Chisolm High School in Enid, Oklahoma. He has held that position for two years. In year one, they won only one game. In year two, they won 6 games and made a playoff appearance. Bo knows Kimes from their playing days at Oklahoma Baptist University. Kimes was a defensive end and an All-American. He started coaching in central Oklahoma in Midwest City and then Choctaw before going to Chisolm HS. Coach John Boogaard is the brand new offensive coordinator at Edmond North High School in Edmond, Oklahoma. He was just awarded the honor of being on the 35 under 35 list for rising football coaches in the state of Oklahoma by the OFBCA. His roots are from the west side of the nation in mountain country. He started his career off coaching as a GA and has quickly worked his way up the ranks in high school ball. Coach Boogaard discusses some drills that he had to invent due to lack of equipment when coaching at the NAIA level and how he still uses them even now. He also walks us through his coaching career, a solid 2 Minute Drill performance, and a HORSE choice that left me scratching my head! Coach Jason Melot just retired from coaching football after over 30 years! Most recently he wore many hats at Oklahoma Baptist University; Linebackers, Recruiting, Hudl, Special Teams, and more. Melot coached football all around the Moore district and some other programs in south Oklahoma. He also did a stint as the President of the OCA, so he is well known throughout the profession. Coach Jay Price is one of the most successful basketball coaches in the state of Oklahoma, both in regards to wins on the court and impacting young men to have a better life. He talks about mission trips to Nicaragua, coaching his kids, the 22-23 season, and coaching a Gatorade POTY. Coach Boone Copeland is the TE coach at Carl Albert HS. He has been coaching for a long time, with long stints in the Lawton area and as the head coach at Western Heights. He has experience as a college coach early on. Coach Copeland has one of the biggest personalities when it comes to the coaching world and is known and liked by everybody! He also has lots of experience coaching golf. He mentions it on this episode, but we recorder before his CA girls golf team went on to win a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! Coach Tony Shiffman is best known for his work on Twitter with the #HogFBChat that takes place every Monday. Coach Shiffman has been ALL OVER. He is a well known coach due to his online presence. He talks on Coach Like A Champion about all of his stops around the country and his experiences at each place. The coaching journey is unique for every coach and Coach Shiffman might have one of the most one-of-a-kind coaching experiences out there. Evan Dresel is the Head Coach of the Oklahoma Christian Women's Soccer Program. He is a staple of the soccer community in the OKC area, having been coaching/playing in the location his entire life. He has invested heavily in the game and the game has invested more back into him. I loved getting the perspective of a college coach on how they navigate the Transfer Portal from a D2 perspective and his team building approach to coaching. Coach Chris Bliek is the head football coach for the Harrah Panthers in Harrah, Ok. He has been in coaching a while now, but made the move to head coach fairly rapidly. Bo and Coach Bliek discuss some impactful decisions and things that he implemented in Harrah to help create the culture they have out there. It is a close knit community that is highly involved in the football program. Coach Bliek has made an impact on the athletic program as a whole. Coach Mike Dunn is the Head Coach at Carl Albert High School. His team recently won the Oklahoma 5A State Championship in December 2022. Coach Dunn provides a lot of insight to mixing old school and new school coaching and leadership techniques to a historic and continuously successful program. He has had the privilege of coaching for, against, and alongside many great coaches. He talks about starting off as a GA before moving to Texas and spending time there before coming back home. John Herbert is the defensive coordinator at Carl Albert High School. In his 6 years there, he has helped coach the Titans to 5 State Championships. Coach Brandon Johnson is the current Offensive Coordinator for the Carl Albert Titans. He has been under numerous legendary Head Coaches throughout his coaching career and a part of two of the most legendary runs in Oklahoma HS football history, starting his career at Ada HS in the early 90s and currently at Carl Albert HS. He has won 10 State Championships at Carl Albert. He is very humble, but has a lot of football knowledge to share. Honored to give Coach J a platform to share just a glimpse of this knowledge. He has been coaching QBs since moving to Carl Albert in 2004. Coach JT Ketch is currently the offensive line coach at Newcastle High School in Newcastle, OK. His football history consists of high school ball and then playing at Oklahoma Baptist University. He graduated from there in 2017 with a Sports Management Degree. He first coached at Mcloud HS for a year, before going south to Lawton HS where he was the OC. Coach Pac Kilby is currently the assistant basketball coach at Harrah HS. He was formerly the head coach at Sasakwa, Earlsboro, Latta, and Shawnee. His teams made appearances in the 2021 5A State Tournament and 2018 Class B State Runner-Up. He graduated from East Central University and Ada HS. He is married to Sadie and they have two sons, Jamison and Kobe. Coach Kilby talks about the craziness of being a head coach of so many different sports from 8-man football to slow pitch to cross country and then back to basketball. JD Runnels is on week one of his new coaching job as the Running backs coach of the USFL team, the Houston Gamblers. JD moved through the ranks quickly. He had a very successful playing career going from Carl Albert to OU and then being drafted by the Chicago Bears. He started his coaching career at the middle school level and has jumped from to the college ranks and not onto a new professional league. He discusses his excitement and energy to be at his new position, all that it entails, and how he got there. JD has a cliche HORSE opponent and dominates the Two-Minute Drill. Dwight Dobbins is a Co-Founder of Oklahoma 7 on 7 team, Sooner7. He is also a skill positional trainer/developer of movement and body control, working with youth, high school, collegiate, and professional athletes. He is based out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is a Tulsa University and Carl Albert HS Alumni. He played at Tulsa between 2011-2014 and followed up his playing career with a year as a GA in 2015. While he was at Tulsa he won a Conference USA championship and a Liberty Bowl Championship in 2012. Grant Haynes coaches at Jones HS in Jones, OK. He is the offensive line position coach and the special teams coordinator. He graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2019 with his bachelors in History Education. Cy Stallard is the Head Football Coach at Cleveland High School in Oklahoma. He is a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University. OBU is also where he began his coaching career. He started out as the receivers coach. He went on to be an offensive coordinator at Cleveland HS and also Choctaw HS. He is now finishing up his second year of being the HC at Cleveland. Zach Clark coaches at Ennis HS in Ennis Texas. He is the offensive line coach, as well as the recruiting coordinator. He graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 2017 with a degree in professional accounting and played football all four years there. He began his coaching career at Venus HS as the offensive coordinator and H-backs coach before moving to where he is now.
