Technology is reshaping many dimensions of sport — from the way athletes train, recover and perform, team strategy and tactics, to how fans bond with their team. The real transformation lies in the convergence of data and human expertise: turning vast streams of data and information into actionable insight as a tool to improving the on field success of a sporting organisation. As investment accelerates and AI moves from experimentation to execution, those who harness technology responsibly — while navigating its legal, ethical and governance challenges — will be well placed to integrate the use of data into their sporting strategy. Anna Sowerby, Associate in the Commercial team at Charles Russell Speechlys, sat down with Andrew Kitchen, deputy General Counsel of Hudl, to discuss the evolution of technology's involvement in sport and the ever increasing impact it is having, particularly around performance of athletes and teams.

Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/G8QTmh_wX28 In Episode 342 of the Glass and Out Podcast, we welcome the head coach of the Minnesota Class A State Champions, Jay Hardwick. He just wrapped up his 14th season with Warroad High School, which concluded with the fifth championship in program history. In addition, Hardwick serves as the Hockey Director of Warroad Youth Hockey. He eats, breathes, and sleeps Warroad hockey. Warroad is a community of roughly 1,800 residents in northern Minnesota. In a given year, about 200 of those residents are kids playing in the local youth association. If one player were to come out of Warroad and make it to the NHL, that alone would defy the odds. But not only has the community produced a number of NHL players, including TJ Oshie and Brock Nelson, it has also produced seven Olympians between the U.S. men's and women's national teams. Statistically, Warroad is a unicorn. As a result, it has earned the moniker "Hockeytown USA." Doug Mathews discussing the multifaceted "art of recruiting" in the modern college football landscape. Mathews highlights that recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, but notes how significantly the process has evolved due to the transfer portal, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) collectives, and advanced scouting technologies like Hudl. He explains the strategic "roster management" phase currently underway at the University of Tennessee, where coaches evaluate their depth charts, subtract graduating seniors, and identify critical positional needs—such as safety—for the 2027 class. Mathews also emphasizes the human element of the profession, arguing that a coach's job is to support players through "problem times," such as homesickness or personal struggles, to fulfill the promises made to families during the recruitment process. He concludes by detailing the strategic importance of "proximity recruiting," noting that while Tennessee's traditional foundations in Georgia and Western North Carolina remain vital, the explosive growth of high school talent in Middle Tennessee (specifically Williamson and Rutherford counties) has become a primary advantage for Coach Josh Heupel’s staff.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/sXhNxazZXN4 In episode 338 of the Glass and Out Podcast, Coachella Valley Firebirds assistant coach Stu Bickel stops by to chat. Bickel is a great example of a coach who has taken all the information he was fed as a player, evolved it, and made it his own as he has embarked on his coaching journey. Bickel grew up just outside of Minneapolis and would go on to star for Eden Prairie High School. After two seasons in the USHL, he joined his hometown University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, but after one season, as an undrafted free agent, he decided to bet on himself and make the jump into professional hockey. The move paid off, as in his fourth season, he appeared in 69 games with the New York Rangers. While not formally a coach at this stage, we sense that the first player he ever coached was himself. He needed to define his strengths and weaknesses and evolve his game into one that would enable him to contribute on a nightly basis in the National Hockey League. That is now a job he's doing full-time today, developing defencemen for the NHL's Seattle Kraken, the parent club of the Firebirds. Listen as he shares his process for improving defencemen, the importance of being good on the breakout, and the power of video as a teaching tool. That would be followed by a move back to his former junior team, the Saskatoon Blades, for three years, and finally this season a return to the Vancouver Giants. Listen as he shares how he's using his Indigenous roots and sobriety to inspire the next generation, leadership lessons from growing up in a rodeo family, and what it takes to develop grit in a player's game. In this episode of the Slappin' Glass Podcast, we sit down with master storyteller and communication expert Clare Murphy to explore the powerful role of storytelling, narrative, and communication in building culture within elite sports teams.Drawing on her work with organizations ranging from the Mission Critical Teams Institute to elite sports environments and NASA, Clare breaks down why stories—not information—are the most effective way leaders transmit belief, values, and identity to their teams.Together we dive into how coaches can use storytelling to build trust, strengthen cohesion, communicate under pressure, and shape the narrative of their teams. In this episode Slappin' Glass welcomes back one of Europe's most thoughtful and dynamic coaching voices, Andrea Trinchieri. Coach Trinchieri returns for a wide-ranging conversation on defensive identity, in-game coaching, leadership evolution, and the modern coach–player relationship. With most teams deep into the season, the discussion begins around identity — and whether it's ever truly fixed. Coach Trinchieri frames the basketball season as evolution, requiring adaptability, clarity of core values, and defensive systems that can toggle aggression without overhauling structure. From simplifying coverage to managing player psychology, this episode dives into the balance between tactical precision and human connection.Throughout the conversation, Coach Trinchieri shares his philosophy on:Why simplicity — not complexity — often produces the best defensive resultsHow to “upgrade” or “downgrade” a base coverage without disrupting rotationsThe psychological reality that players find rhythm through offense before committing defensivelyThe importance of situational awareness in managing substitutions and early-game momentumLayered rebounding principles and how to incentivize “no man's land” effort playsWhen and why to implement tagging concepts on the offensive glassThe evolving coach–player dynamic in an era shaped by NIL and social mediaThe episode also features a compelling round of Start, Sub, or Sit, where Coach Trinchieri breaks down what he prioritizes at the start of games, which statistical margins matter most (rebounding, free throws, turnovers), and how in-game evaluation must remain fluid and situational. At its core, this episode centers on a driving question:How can coaches evolve tactically while strengthening the relationships that ultimately define success? For coaches seeking insight into defensive structure, in-game management, leadership philosophy, and sustainable team identity, this conversation delivers a masterclass in both strategy and humanity. What You'll LearnHow to build a defensive identity that can toggle aggression without sacrificing clarityWhy offensive involvement fuels defensive commitmentA framework for balancing scouting preparation with non-negotiable core valuesHow to address early-game energy issues without overreactingA layered approach to rebounding: one-on-one battles, neutral rebounds, and effort incentivesWhen tagging principles are most effective — and when they are notHow defining roles creates hierarchy, chemistry, and clarityWhy long-term coaching success should be measured by player evolution, not public opinionThis Episode is Sponsored By:NABC Convention Join coaches from across the country April 2–6 in Indianapolis for five days of X's & O's clinics, educational sessions, networking, and championship-week access.
