The Gametime Guru
From an 0-24 Team to Pro Quarterback in Europe with Justin Sottilare

The Gametime Guru

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2026 44:41

How does a quarterback go from playing for an 0-24 high school football program to competing professionally around the world? In this episode of The Gametime Guru, Shane Larson sits down with professional quarterback, offensive coordinator, and football entrepreneur Justin Sottilare. Justin shares his journey from a struggling high school program to playing for nationally competitive Division III powerhouse Wesley College. He entered college as one of eight quarterbacks on the roster, considered quitting, and ultimately worked his way into opportunities to contribute to a winning program. After college, Justin planned to become a teacher and football coach. Then an unexpected message opened the door for him to play professional American football in Europe. What he initially thought might be an April Fool's joke became an international playing career that took him to Germany, Australia, and other football programs around the world. Justin began playing professionally overseas in 2014, initially retired in 2021, and later returned to the field. He is now playing quarterback professionally again at 36 years old while continuing to coach and build businesses within the football industry. This conversation covers: How Justin remained committed during an 0-24 stretch in high school Why refusing to quit helped him move up the college depth chart What he learned inside an elite Division III football program How he received his first opportunity to play professionally in Europe What the talent, competition, and atmosphere are like in European football Why international football can create opportunities for players after college How Justin became an offensive coordinator while continuing to play quarterback Why he spent years developing repeatable systems for football coaches How he turned his football knowledge into the American Football Academy Why it took a full year for his business to generate its first revenue How Spiral XO helps coaches organize and manage their football programs Justin also takes us behind the creation of Spiral XO. Spiral XO is an all-in-one football coaching and program management platform created by experienced football coaches who understand how much time goes into running a team. The platform helps coaches manage digital playbooks, player quizzes, practice plans, scouting reports, scout cards, team communication, calendars, in-game analytics, equipment, player development, and other important parts of a football program. Spiral XO can also integrate information from film platforms such as Hudl and QuickCut, helping coaches reduce repetitive administrative work and spend more time preparing their teams and developing their players. One of its most valuable features automatically creates interactive player quizzes from a team's playbook. Players can draw their assignments, receive immediate feedback, and demonstrate whether they truly understand their responsibilities. Coaches can then review each player's answers without manually creating and grading every quiz. Whether you are an athlete, football coach, athletic director, entrepreneur, or sports fan, Justin's story offers powerful lessons about persistence, preparation, leadership, problem-solving, and building a career around something you genuinely love. Learn more about Justin's businesses: Explore Spiral XO and book a demo Visit the American Football Academy Connect with The Gametime Guru: Subscribe to the podcast for more conversations with athletes, coaches, entrepreneurs, and sports figures from around the world. New interviews provide a panoramic view of sports and the lessons that competition can teach us about life, leadership, and business. What part of Justin Sottilare's journey stood out most to you?

Which strikers should Spurs actually sign after Kroupi's three-month injury? Enya Collins takes The Analyst through four data-backed alternatives — with Wyscout and Hudl doing the heavy lifting alongside the eye test. Charles De Ketelaere (Atalanta's 6'4" utility man with elite vision and ghost-runner instincts). Omar Marmoush (the ex-Man City winger-striker hybrid Enya compares to Arsenal's Zinchenko/Jesus level-up signings). Endrick (Real Madrid's 19-year-old Brazilian with the whole country behind him). And Ferran Torres — the Barcelona striker Roberto De Zerbi just called "the shark" in a press interview. Enya's #1 pick isn't the name most Spurs fans are shouting about — and Jim's mystery reveal at the end pays off De Zerbi's own coded hint. Considered, nuanced, data-driven analysis. Spurs need a left winger — and Enya Collins, live from Vancouver, walks The Analyst through the five names every fan is arguing about with Wyscout and Hudl data doing the heavy lifting. Savinho as the low-block breaker and the case for two dribblers with Kudus on the opposite flank. Antoine Nusa as the profile-similar alternative — with the medical history and the Bundesliga-to-Premier-League step-up that changes the risk profile. Rafael Leao as the on-form game-breaker with the fallouts baggage — plus a considered read from Enya's diehard Milan-fan friend that reframes the "attitude" question. Cody Gakpo as the completely different inside-winger profile that might not actually fit De Zerbi's high-and-wide starter. And the twist: the current, only-fit left winger already in the squad. In Episode 347, the season finale of the Glass and Out Podcast, we revisit our conversation with the head coach of the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, Rod Brind'Amour. Back in 2019, Brind'Amour was just in his second season as head coach of Carolina and fresh off leading a young Canes team to its first playoff appearance in nine seasons. Fast forward to today, and he is now a Stanley Cup champion as both a player and a coach. This was one of our favourite episodes of all time, and we thought it was the perfect way to honour Brind'Amour and his incredible journey. A special thank you to everyone who tuned in this season. We can't wait to get back at it in September for Season 10! Listen as he shares why it's important to think like a player as a coach, how to get creative when delivering your message, and why coaches should avoid looking in the rearview mirror. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/G8QTmh_wX28 In Episode 342 of the Glass and Out Podcast, we welcome the head coach of the Minnesota Class A State Champions, Jay Hardwick. He just wrapped up his 14th season with Warroad High School, which concluded with the fifth championship in program history. In addition, Hardwick serves as the Hockey Director of Warroad Youth Hockey. He eats, breathes, and sleeps Warroad hockey. Warroad is a community of roughly 1,800 residents in northern Minnesota. In a given year, about 200 of those residents are kids playing in the local youth association. If one player were to come out of Warroad and make it to the NHL, that alone would defy the odds. But not only has the community produced a number of NHL players, including TJ Oshie and Brock Nelson, it has also produced seven Olympians between the U.S. men's and women's national teams. Statistically, Warroad is a unicorn. As a result, it has earned the moniker "Hockeytown USA." Listen as he shares the journey to a state championship, his experience growing up in Warroad, and how he's paying it forward today.
