It's estimated that 15 to 20% of the global population is neurodivergent. 1 in 5 people. But fear of stigma prevents many from disclosing this in their workplaces. That's a lot of people not bringing their full selves – and skills – to work. And companies not getting the best of their brilliant talent. For some, choosing to disclose can be empowering and spotlight their strengths. But it can also be complex to navigate. Especially when there's stereotypes or lack of education and understanding. So, what can companies do to become more inclusive for neurodiverse people – and make the most of their talents? That's what we're exploring with Steve Hill, Chief Commercial Officer at auticon, and Matt Stallard, leader of Tech Strategy & Transformation and ServiceNow practices at Deloitte, in this episode of The Green Room as we ask: How can companies think differently about people who think differently? What made our guests want to get involved in this space? How have they seen things change throughout their careers? And how are they building neuroinclusive workplaces now? Is there still stigma – and how can businesses best tackle this and increase understanding? What can companies do to create inclusive workspaces that enable people with neurodivergent traits to succeed? How do we ensure line managers are equipped to support neurodivergent talent? Could it actually be a catalyst for business growth? And how can businesses ensure they get the best out of people and how they work? Tune in to find out: Why Matt became so passionate about neurodiversity The story behind the largest majority-autistic company in the world The small changes that make all the difference when hiring neurodivergent people The secret to getting the best out of people and how they work Enjoyed this episode? When you hear the term Dispensationalism, what comes to your mind? You might think of theological charts illustrating various periods in biblical history or of the bestselling Left Behind series, which came out in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Or, maybe you've never heard the term before. Whatever your understanding of Dispensationalism may be, today's discussion with Dr. Mike Stallard is sure to help define what it is and is not, and will give you a better understanding of its implications.
Does the church fulfill the New Covenant? Yes, believers in the church are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, but many dispensationalists disagree on the relationship between the church and the New Covenant in Jeremiah 31. Dr. Mike Stallard edited a book that discusses these various views called, "Dispensational Understanding of the New Covenant." On this date in 1965, the Mets opened their fourth season with an 8-1 loss to the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. The 112-loss season didn't even have a moment to gather oxygen before Maury Wills led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball by Chris Cannizzaro, and scored on a Willie Davis double. Later that inning, being the 1965 Mets, it became 2-0 Dodgers when Davis scored on a foul pop to Cannizzaro. How the heck did that happen? Did any of our subscribers see the Mets' 1965 opener? If you did see that game, you might also remember that it became 5-0 in the fourth inning when Don Drysdale hit a two-run homer off Al Jackson. That was one of four homers that Drysdale hit in his career against the Mets, tied with Bob Gibson for the all-time lead among pitchers. The Mets have given up 95 homers all-time to pitchers, a number that figures to stay in double digits for many years to come, barring a wave of Shohei Ohtani copycats in the majors.Drysdale hit a solo shot off Tracy Stallard in 1964 at Shea, the two-run dinger off Jackson in the 1965 opener, a tiebreaking solo blast off Warren Spahn in the eighth inning on June 11, 1965, and then one more on July 24, 1966, at Dodger Satdium, off Jack Fisher.Stallard also gave up homers during his Mets tenure to Juan Marichal (1963) and Wade Blasingame (1964), which ties him with Ron Darling, Jacob deGrom, and Dillon Gee among Mets pitchers for giving up dingers to their opposite number. The king of this dubious category? Not surprisingly, it's Tom Seaver, given the amount of opportunities he had.Seaver gave up homers in 1969 to Dan McGinn and Fergie Jenkins (two of six homers that pitchers hit against the Mets that year (tied with 1962 and 2006 — Dontrelle Willis took Jose Lima, Oliver Pérez, and Roberto Hernandez deep that year — for the team record), Juan Pizarro in 1971, Burt Hooton (a grand slam) in 1972, and Larry Christenson in 1976. Tom Terrific got one of those dingers back in 1979, when he took Craig Swan out of the park in Cincinnati. As a Met, Seaver hit six home runs, a team record since broken by Dwight Gooden, who tallied seven. Noah Syndergaard also hit six taters with the Mets. What none of those guys did is hit a grand slam, something no Mets pitcher has done since Jack Hamilton on May 20, 1967… off Al Jackson. Hamilton gave back all four runs within two innings, left the game tied at 4-4, and watched the Mets build back up to a 9-4 lead before losing to the Cardinals, 11-9.Mets pitchers have hit two grand slams, ever, with the other one hit in 1963 by Carl Willey at the Polo Grounds against the Houston Colt .45s. That total of two is equaled by the number of grand slams that the Mets allowed to pitchers in the final season at Shea Stadium: Félix Hernández (off Johan Santana) and Jason Marquis (off Jon Niese) both did it.The Mets are 0-7 all-time when allowing a grand slam to an opposing pitcher. No team has given up more of them since 1962. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe
In January 2023, a leaked memo from the US air force general Mike Minihan revealed that he expected to be at war with China over Taiwan by 2025. Russia's invasion of Ukraine had raised the stakes, as had Beijing's consistent refusal to rule out military action. But is a full-scale invasion the real threat, or is the territory's struggle for independence already well under way? On a recent trip to Taiwan, the New Statesman's China and global affairs editor Katie Stallard visits Kinmen, site of the last major confrontation between Mao Zedong's People's Liberation Army and the Kuomintang forces of Chiang Kai-shek in 1949. There are relics of past conflicts everywhere, from the wall of loudspeakers that broadcasts propaganda at the Chinese coast, to the tunnels and air raid shelters that protected the Taiwanese from bombing in the 1950s. Now they face more subtle threats – “grey-zone tactics” such as the severing of internet cables from Taiwan to the Matsu islands, and “cognitive warfare”, or a sophisticated disinformation campaign, alongside the alienation of Taiwan's traditional diplomatic allies (down from 22 to 13 formal partners, as countries such as Honduras switch allegiance to Beijing). In Taipei, Stallard hears how a more conventional military offensive might unfold, and the ways in which anti-US propaganda has gained traction – particularly in the wake of its exit from Afghanistan. Can Taiwan hold its ground? Written and read by Katie Stallard. This article originally appeared in the 31 March – 13 April spring issue of the New Statesman. You can read the text version here. This week, Azim Ahmed's guest is a senior figure in the Church in Wales. The Right Reverend Mary Stallard, currently the Assistant Bishop of Bangor, has just been elected as the 73rd Bishop of Llandaff – a post she'll take up in sometime in the spring. The Diocese of Llandaff covers nearly half the Christian population in Wales, including parts of Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and some of the Valleys. Bishop Mary was one of the first women to be ordained as a priest in the Church in Wales in 1997. Since then she has served a number of clerical posts in all corners of the country. For the past twenty years she's worked in the north, in both the St Asaph and Bangor dioceses where she's held a number of senior roles. Five years ago she was appointed Archdeacon of Bangor and then almost twelve months ago was made the Assistant Bishop there. Bishop Mary's voice is familiar to many listeners in Wales; in the past she's also presented a number of All Things Considered programmes. In the first radio interview since her election, Bishop Mary talks to Azim about her early life and career, about relationships with non-Christian faiths, young people, and the role of a bishop, not least in speaking out on topical issues, of which in her view, the biggest is concern about the environment.

In this week's episode of Horns of a Dilemma, Katie Stallard, a journalist and scholar, speaks about her book, Dancing on Bones: History and Power in China, Russia, and North Korea. Stallard details how totalitarian regimes use a doctored version of history--espeically history regarding World War II--to forcibly shape public rememberance in a way that reinforces the goals of the regime. This effort to rewrite history ranges from the careful omission of facts surrounding Soviet atrocities to an entirely fictionalized account of Kim Jong Il's exploits during the war. Stallard's fascinating study helps illuminate how the control of history can be a critical instrument of power, and provide a potent means to bolster the legitimacy of even the most horrific actions by a totalitiarian leader. This talk was recorded at the University of Texas, Austin.

Present-day relations between ‘the West' and each of China, Russia and North Korea are often fractious to say the least, yet today's global atmosphere of menace or crisis just as often has to do with history as it does with contemporary disagreements. All states of course seek ‘usable pasts' which may or may not be in conflict with one another, but as Katie Stallard shows in Dancing on Bones, leaders in each of Beijing, Moscow and Pyongyang have of late gone to particularly great lengths to shape historical narratives which justify their grip on power. Drawing on years of on-the-ground reporting and research in each of these three critically important countries, Stallard mixes analysis of political and historical events with first-hand interviews and reportage to offer a vivid sense of how history is put to ever-changing uses and why this matters. Accessibly written and richly referenced, Dancing on Bones: History and Power in China, Russia and North Korea (Oxford UP, 2022),sheds compelling light on often-under-considered connections between three countries which share much beyond their status as perceived ‘revisionist' powers. Ed Pulford is a Lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University of Manchester. This week, journalist and former foreign correspondent Katie Stallard joins the NüVoices podcast in a special, live stream recording to celebrate the launch of her new book Dancing on Bones: History and Power in China, Russia and North Korea. Katie discusses her writing and research process, the significance and perspectives of WWII within these three authoritarian countries, and her analysis of Russia's current invasion of Ukraine. Joanna Chiu, NüVoices founder and board member, moderates this conversation. ABOUT DANCING ON BONES: "History didn't end. Democracy didn't triumph. America's leading role in the world is no longer assured. Instead, autocrats and populist strongmen are on the rise, and the global order established after 1945 is under attack. This is the phenomenon Katie Stallard tackles in Dancing on Bones, as she examines how the leaders of China, Russia, and North Korea manipulate the past to serve the present and secure the future of authoritarian rule...These three states consistently top lists of threats to US and European security, and yet the leaders of all three insist that it is their country that is threatened, rewriting history and exploiting the memory of the wars of the last century to justify their actions and shore up popular support. Since coming to power, Xi Jinping has almost doubled the length of China's World War II, Vladimir Putin has elevated the memory of the Great Patriotic War to the status of a national religion, and Kim Jong Un has invested vast sums in rebuilding war museums in his impoverished state, while those who try to challenge the official version of history are silenced and jailed. But this didn't start with Putin, Xi, and Kim, and it won't end with them. Drawing on first-hand, on-the-ground reporting, Dancing on Bones argues that if we want to understand where these three nuclear powers are heading, we must understand the stories they are telling their citizens about the past."
