The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 5th study session on Kenneth Wooden's The Children of Jonestown. Wooden was a journalist at the time of the Guyana genocide and wrote extensively about the mass murder during 1978 and 1979. Like Meiers, Wooden is classified as a White Man. Having immersed ourselves into the life and times of the Rev. Jim Jones, we'll seek better answers about how "father" was able to acquire and kill nearly 300 children - most of them classified as black. Last week, Wooden told us about Julie Ann Runnels, a 12-year-old black female who was stolen by Rev. Jim Jones. When her black "relatives" saw her after a long period of the child being in the Peoples Temple, Runnels was without shoes, wearing soiled rags. She died in Jonestown. Gus pinpointed that the title of chapter 7, "The Paralysis and Failure of Government," is highly inaccurate. White government officials in Guyana and the US had the ability to move to action against the Peoples Temple and Rev. Jones. These powerful White officials lacked the will to address the hundreds of black children and people who would be killed in South America. #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

When Stephanie Land set out to write her memoir, Maid, she never could have imagined what was to come. Handpicked by President Barack Obama as one of the best books of 2019 and later adapted into the hit Netflix series Maid, Stephanie's escape out of poverty and abuse in search of a better life inspired millions. Maid was a story about a house cleaner, but it was also a story about a woman with a dream. In her new book, Class, Land takes us with her as she finishes college and pursues her writing career. Facing barriers at every turn including a byzantine loan system, not having enough money for food, navigating the judgments of professors and fellow students who didn't understand the demands of attending college while under the poverty line — Land finds a way to survive once again, finally graduating in her mid-thirties. Class paints an intimate portrait of motherhood as it converges and often conflicts with personal desire and professional ambition. Who has the right to create art? Who has the right to go to college? And what kind of work is valued in our culture? Class grapples with these questions, offering a searing indictment of America's educational system and an inspiring testimony of a mother's triumph against all odds. Stephanie Land is the author of the New York Times bestseller Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive, called “a testimony…worth listening to,” by The New York Times and inspiration for the Netflix series Maid. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Atlantic, and many other outlets. Her writing focuses on social and economic justice and parenting under the poverty line. She is a frequent speaker at colleges and national advocacy organizations. Find out more at Stepville.com. Sara K. Runnels is a seasoned humor writer, copywriter and writer-writer living in Seattle, WA. Her witticisms, viral one-liners and sharp social commentary can be found, quite literally, all over the internet (@omgskr). She specializes in clever dating and relationship content, and always has something to say about politics, pop culture and the Pacific Northwest. She is currently working on a funny novel in between episodes of terrible reality TV. Class: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hunger, and Higher Education The Elliott Bay Book Company

This episode was written as an epic Pride Season gift to our beloved Patreon subscribers, but given recent Supreme Court rulings and the fresh wave of anti-LGBTQ+ mouth diarrhea that SCOTUS fuckery spawned, it seemed an important story to release into the wild. Because while it might sound like a joke, few things are more epic, gayer, AND more prescient in these polarized times than the largely forgotten sliver of wildly queer pro wrestling history called “The Goldust Era,” which officially began on October 15, 1995. There's even a hero in this salacious tale of WWE executives exploiting homophobia for profit: Dustin Runnels, veteran pro wrestling superstar and outspoken advocate for LGBTQ folk. Runnels' arc from a wounded little boy to Southern American hero, to the most hated man in wrestling, to redeemed role model and father of a trans kid is equal parts heartwarming and unhinged and is compelling even if you've never once watched a body slam live on Pay Per View. It's also a major thread in pro wrestling's long history of selling the gayest heat imaginable to audiences that, by and large, see themselves as heterosexual patriots with no ties to the LGBTQ community, despite participating in one of the most homoerotic art forms on the planet. Heads Up: There's hate speech and LGBTQ slurs in this episode, and not because we condone it. (People really said some wildshit on TV in the 90s.)Support the show
Back in 2015 there was a letter that was published that shook many peoples testimony of the Restored Gospel. That letter was authored by a man named Jeremy Runnells and was addressed to an employee of the Church Educational System that letter became known as the CES letter. In the letter Mr. Runnels attacks foundational truth claims of the Restored Gospel and Joseph Smith. On this episode I have on Sarah Allen. Sarah is a life-long devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a volunteer for Fair Mormon which is a group dedicated to providing informed well documented answers to Gospel questions. There is an unmistakable link between what we eat and how we feel. After losing a son to mental health issues, Daily Crunch Snacks' Co-Founder Diane Orley dedicated her business mission to feeding the mind as much as the body. For her, that starts with a daily ritual of a handful of almonds. Over 15 years ago, Diane's sister visited India where she learned the health benefits of sprouted almonds. Inspired by her sister's travel, Diane merged the practice of sprouting almonds with additional added flavors using clean ingredients. When her niece, Laurel Orley, was pregnant with her third child, her cravings were intense. Diane's almonds were one of her favorite healthy snacks. Laurel saw potential in her aunt's business and joined forces to start Daily Crunch Snacks. In this episode, Jen talks with Grace Runnels, Brand and Content Marketing Lead at Daily Crunch Snacks about the story behind the brand, the benefits of sprouting almonds, and the importance of mental health at Daily Crunch Snacks. So it's important to read those labels.” ~ Jen Smiley [13:41] - “I think our whole team is just really inspired by trying to make people feel as good as possible inside and out and that the food you eat does have a big impact on that.” ~ Grace Runnels [14:22] - “We're going back to the basics like you said, that clean, clean is misleading. Getting Beyond Burnout When You Are Barely Hanging On As a Caregiver Adult caregivers, you can avoid burnout as you care for your loved one. It's sure not easy and, often, we forget to care for ourselves in the process. “Honor your father and mother,” in Exodus 20:12 is a commandment with a promise. The Lord shares that if we honor our parents, our days may be long in the land He gives us. Being a caregiver of your own parents or an aging adult is both a labor of love and a responsibility. The task comes with many stressors that affect your mental and emotional health, your ability to relax, sleep well and overall quality of life. Often, your own finances are affected as is your work/life balance and time with your immediate family, perhaps your own children. Join Charlotte and Carole Jeanne Runnels, R.N. as they talk about caring for yourself in the process of caregiving while ensuring your loved one receives the best possible care. Carole Jeanne is a committed Christ-follower, a dear friend of Charlotte's, and lovingly cared for her mother, father, aunt and uncle for 12 years into their end-stages of life. Her nursing career of 38 years included serving as an oncology nurse, an educational programs coordinator and as a school nurse. Caregiving is hard. Yet it is priceless time to help your loved ones finish out their lives well. Keeping your spiritual tank full, involving Christian community and finding small things that bring you joy are helpful as is taking the scenic route and remembering the fullness of your aging adult's life. Carole Jeanne suggests sharing the freedom that comes from the ability to discuss everything and to serve as your loved ones advocate. Tapping in to community resources and offering yourself a bit of grace will help you “do the next right thing” as you care for your loved one. Tune in to hear more from this insightful conversation. These scriptures helped Carole Jeanne and they can help you: “The Joy of the Lord is my strength,” Nehemiah 8:10 “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” Phil. 4:13. A suggested book for help is Cruising Through Caregiving by Jennifer FitzPatrick, MSW, LCSW-C, CSP. You can purchase it here: Amazon.com : cruising through caregiving. In this episode archaeologist Dimitri Nakassis talks about two kinds of archaeological work in southern Greece—a pedestrian survey of the countryside, and a salvage excavation of a Mycenaean cemetery. What happens when farmers plow up archaeological material? What can archaeologists learn from tombs that have been looted? What are some ways in which local people can be better connected to their heritage and thereby better protect it? We address these and other topics, including the usefulness of goats! We women love taking care of others. It's part of our DNA. But far too often, we do it so often that we lose sight of who we are as people, what we want, and even what we like to do. We know what everyone else likes, what they want, what their dreams and desires are. But when asked about our own, we seem to be at a loss. Sometimes we take such good care of those folks that we live with, that they become dependent on us - which can feel good, until we need some help. And then, when we ask for the help, it doesn't come. It gets frustrating, and we become resentful. And then we find ourselves yelling about stupid stuff - which isn't even the real problem. So what is it? In episode 18 of the Done with Dieting Podcast, my guest, Michelle Runnels, shares so much amazing knowledge and so many truth bombs that you'll be laughing, nodding your head along, and saying ‘yeah, I do that.' When it comes to how we ask for what we want in our relationships - our relationships with other women, our children and our partners. On Episode 4 of “The Cross Section Podcast” I got to hang out on a wintery evening with one of the raddest humans I know. She is pretty much the embodiment of what I like to explore on the podcast - bikes, music, and art - so there is little wonder that we hit it off immediately and became good friends over the years. She is something of a rolling stone and we discussed her journeys around the country and around the world since leaving Mississippi after high school. She joined me from Arkansas where she has settled into during the pandemic. In addition to her travels, we talked about her backstory, art, bikes and many other topics including the origin of her unique Instagram handle: @aunicornvomited (she's a great follow, I highly recommend it). She is a professional cyclist in many disciplines - mtb, road, ‘cross, fixed gear … a true all-arounder. Our paths have crossed many times and many places around the country - from Cyclocross Nationals to Tracklocross Nationals in 2019, which she won ... and is as crazy and wild as it sounds. To get a sense of that here is a link to a video I made about this wild hybrid of a fixed-gear riding. The longer we spent exploring the topics that we venture into on this episode, the more I came away from it even more amazed at how worldly she is and how much wisdom she has garnered as a result of her experiences. She is currently studying art at SCAD. She is very articulate, a deep-thinker, and very kind. Above all else, it is her giggle that makes Sammi, Sammi. What a great hangout. Today we chat with Sammi Runnels. I think you'll like it.
