City clerk rescues 19th-century records from dump You never know what you're going to find at the dump. Just ask Amanda Caputo. Last fall, the Beacon city clerk discovered the handwritten articles of incorporation for the Village of Matteawan buried under decades of dirt, dust and who knows what else at the city's Transfer Station. Dated May 28, 1886, and recorded by Fishkill Town Clerk G.W. Bradshaw, the articles are in remarkably good condition. They signify the formation of Matteawan, a manufacturing hub of about 4,400 residents centered around Fishkill Creek. Matteawan was 1½ miles east of Fishkill Landing, the neighboring village with which it would merge in 1913 to create Beacon. A follow-up meeting was held on June 29, 1886, at Fishkill Town Hall, where town officials voted to approve Matteawan's secession. Records show that village leaders expected to spend $2,500 (about $86,500 today) on "ordinary expenses" in the first year. The articles were the most significant find inside seven hardbound books discovered by Caputo. The books, which also contain records from Fishkill Landing, were recovered from Beacon's incinerator building, a brick structure with an adjacent smokestack that's next to the wastewater treatment plant on Dennings Avenue. Once the destination for the city's wastewater sludge and trash, it has been — aside from a first-floor office — largely vacant for years. "No one expected anything useful to be in there," said Caputo. "Why would you keep valuable records at the dump for 30 years?" The best guess is that the books — along with an assortment of urban renewal and community development documents, property assessments and financial and court records — were stashed at the three-story building in the mid-1990s, when the current City Hall was under construction. Some of the documents were transported in filing cabinets. Loose materials, including the seven books, were taken upstairs, where scores of pigeons would later enter through broken windows and take roost. In 2024, city workers replaced the windows, and a private company helped clean out 30 years of bird waste. "Then we were like, 'There's all those records — I wonder what's in there?' " said City Administrator Chris White, who served on the City Council in 1996 and 1997. White said he recalled the building being "in really bad shape" even then. While the structure had been cleaned out, it wasn't spotless when Caputo got to it. The top layer of boxes and loose paper "was just covered in grime," she said. "Once you started moving stuff, the dust started flying. Thankfully, these books were covered by records that were much less remarkable." Although the covers and spines of the books have deteriorated, the inside pages are nearly all intact, still white with numbers printed in blue in the upper corners. Flipping through them, one gets a glimpse into the world 140 years ago. The Aug. 18, 1886, meeting of the Matteawan Board of Trustees was held at 7:15 p.m. in the office of a hat factory, the Matteawan Manufacturing Co. (now The Roundhouse). Its superintendent was Willard H. Mase, the village president, who would later that year be elected to the first of five terms in the state Assembly. In 1887, Mase financed a volunteer fire company that was named for him. One of the first orders of business on Aug. 18 was approving the minutes of the previous meeting. Another was the appointment of Sherwood Phillips as the village clerk. His salary was left "open-carried." In a list of village ordinances, the first prohibited "amusement, such as playing ball, shinny, the discharge of firearms, fireworks," or any other act "by which person or property is endangered." The second notes that the peace and quiet of the village shall not be disturbed on Sunday, under threat of a $10 penalty. The records reflect attention to detail, Caputo noted. A letter from February 1903 advised Miss Van Rensselaer that the Matteawan Board of Trustees had noticed the "flag walk" i...

Managing Complex, High-Volume Hiring Without Sacrificing Candidate ExperienceInside Talent with Craig Fisher featuring Mike Bradshaw, VP of Talent at PinpointIn this episode of Inside Talent, Craig Fisher sits down with Mike Bradshaw, VP of Talent at Pinpoint, to explore one of the toughest challenges facing recruiting teams today: how to scale hiring quickly without damaging candidate experience or employer brand. As companies deal with more roles, more locations, and more pressure to move fast, many hiring processes begin to break down. This week on the podcast, we're joined by wedding photographer Sarah Bradshaw. We talk about building a value-led brand, resisting the pull of constant attention, and creating a business that supports a full life instead of slowly draining it. Sarah unpacks her “fireplaces vs. fireworks” metaphor, shares how faith and intentionality guide her decisions, and explains why defining “enough” may be the most strategic move a creative entrepreneur can make. In this episode, recorded a few weeks before our Denver trip, Bradshaw shares about reaching his one-year sober milestone. We talk about it all — the struggles that led him to drinking, what shifting away from alcohol looked like, how friends can truly support someone in recovery, and the tools that have helped him stay sober. (Twin Cities Vipassana Collective) Learning the true flavor of Compassion
Before we get philosophical, we debrief our throuple weekend in Vail after teaching at The River in Denver, including a podcasting mishap we absolutely did not plan, what we learned from a full weekend of workshops, and everything coming up next. Giana is dreaming up a new retreat, Bradshaw is diving into a restorative training, and we share more about upcoming collaborative events and teacher trainings. Then we get into it. What does “advanced” actually mean in yoga? We look at it from both the teacher and student lens and unpack how our definitions have shifted over the years. What makes an advanced teacher? Is it complexity, or the ability to create class-to-class without ego? What makes an advanced student? Is it flexibility, or nervous system regulation? We talk about the current inclination to move fast in yoga and the power of the pause. We explore teaching and practicing with versus without music, and how sometimes removing layers can create more depth. Giana reflects on how not needing music anymore feels like a personal marker of growth, especially since it once felt uncomfortable. We also explore the subtle internal markers that signal a deeper experience unfolding within the practice.Because maybe advanced is not about harder shapes. Maybe it is about subtler awareness. We also speak to those who love a sweaty feel-good workout and why that can be great, while also asking how we use practice to feel more, question more, and expand our capacity. Advanced evolves. It is personal. It is different for everyone. And it rarely looks the way we expect it to. Want to support our podcast? The Steelers and Raiders were two of the defining teams of the decade, opposites in almost every way. Pittsburgh was a homegrown powerhouse built through the draft, while Oakland thrived by embracing outcasts and unconventional talent. The Steelers were new to winning; the Raiders had already captured an AFL championship. Both embodied the brutal style of the era - gritty defenses, punishing hits, and a brand of football so violent it forced rule changes. The rivalry, and the intensity that fueled it, may never be matched again in the history of the NFL.Get our Steelers-Ravens book here! What has made Terry Bradshaw change his tune about Aaron Rodgers? Last season he told Rodgers to get lost and ‘chew on bark,' but now he seems OK if Rodgers comes back for a second season in Pittsburgh. We looked the numbers from Russell Wilson in 2024 – they aren't much different than what Rodgers gave them in 2025. There weren't many out there that wanted Wilson back, so why do more want Rodgers? Was Rodgers the biggest problem last season? Steve Palazzolo from the 33rd Team joined the show. Steve thinks the Steelers need to turn the page to the future and roll with another QB in 2026 – not Aaron Rodgers. Steve thinks Malik Willis might be netting nearly $40M per year in free agency after stepping up for the Packers a few times the last two seasons. He thinks that has to do with a limited pool in free agency and a weaker rookie class. Steve explained why he thinks Kyler Murray is an interesting option and got into the focus aspect of his game. Steve, a former minor league pitcher, talked about his memories of Spring Training. Steve talked about some of the amenities in the MiLB days. Donny Football Debrief – The Steelers have finalized their coaching staff.

In this episode, Bradshaw and Giana dive into one of the most deceptively hard practices in yoga (and life): surrender- on the mat, in the classroom, and everywhere in between.First, they begin to unpack this concept and what it really means to surrender in the physical practice- speaking of things like the ego, finding your edge, and creating balance of steadiness and ease, or f sthira and sukha. You'll hear stories from their early “ohhh… this is surrender” moments, plus what they notice most often in students- when ambition disguises itself as self-harm, and how honoring your body can be the most disciplined choice. From a teacher's perspective, they reflect on the idea of surrender from tackling internal battles around perfectionism- including surrendering the plan, letting yourself be seen as a real or flawed human in front of a room full of people, and, of course, the ego. They also share how non-attachment or vairāgya, can be its own kind of freedom or form of surrender. As they shift the conversation off the mat and into real life, Giana shares her experience with health anxiety and uncertainty, and how her surrender practice became more important than ever. It has now taken on new meaning as she steps into pregnancy and the beginning of motherhood. And Bradshaw offers his own approach to anxiety, which looks different than Giana's… but they both keep landing in the same place: the practice of releasing control- again and again, in tiny moments, in big ones, and in the ones you didn't see coming.Giana closes with a sweet reflection on faith, and in true funny-thing fashion, they lighten the air with funny stories. Of course, you can also expect tangents, and the kind of honest laughter that only happens when you stop gripping so tightly.Want to support our podcast?
