The Great Awakening a Brown to Green Podcast

"Rest does not always equal restoration." Michael and Travis sit down in the studio with David Brockman, wife of former guest, Jenny Brockman. David was arrested at 7:30am on his 18th birthday. This landed him a stay at Teen Challenge, where he wasn't known as David the addict, but instead, only as David the sinner. It would change his life. He would get married, get a job in the ministry, even living in a church parsonage. But at one point, his life became overwhelming, and the Lord asked him to walk away from something big - his job as a youth minister, which included his home. They made the move to Harrah with their four sons, and in a short time, landed at Harrah Church, much to his dismay. But it turned out beautifully. Listen to him tell his story. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/great-awakening-by-b2g/message

Live music venues in and around Asheville are back to hosting shows, but it's anything but business as usual. Amid evolving Covid-19 restrictions, venues have adopted their own safety protocols on top of local requirements and those required by the artists, affecting audiences, backstage crew and event staff. Still, behind the scenes, venue managers are sweating it out. "Our biggest lesson learned here is being mask police with 2,000 people in a big, open crowd is really, really hard," said Chris Corl, general manager of Harrah's Cherokee Center. He was among a half-dozen venue managers and directors in a recent online town hall hosted by the Asheville Area Arts Council. Forum speakers reported a range of concerning realities. Among them, many touring artists are postponing or canceling appearances. About a quarter of people who purchased tickets in advance are asking for refunds and another 25 to 30 percent simply aren't showing up, further cutting into food and drink sales.

Join the IC Muharram Majlis program with recitation of the Quran, poetry from community members and a nightly lecture by Sheikh Faiyaz. Muharram–– the first month of the Islamic calendar–– demarcates a period of religious significance for Muslims across the globe, who annually commemorate the tragedy of Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. Particular to Shia Muslim tradition, the first 10 days are historically spent mourning, grieving, and reflecting upon Hussain and his family's spiritual sacrifice through lamentation poetry, nightly gatherings, and various forms of cultural expression. Muharram is not only centered around sorrow, but is also a time of community unity and harmony, bringing out themes of justice, love, beauty, generosity, compassion and fidelity to the Prophet and his family.

Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! We're returning from a short break and taped this episode from a premier club suite at Petco Park, thanks to this week's sponsor, the San Diego Padres. We're here with Eddie Quinn, vice president of partnership services for the Padres and the park's resident beer expert, as they face off against the Miami Marlins. Eddie started his career with the Padres as a bat boy before he headed off to college, then he returned to San Diego and rejoined them as a sales representative. He's been with the team ever since (more than 15 years!) and worked his way up to his current title. He tells us about the craft beer program at the park and how many different breweries they partner with, and names his top three favorite brews that are available on site—listen in to get his recommendations! In Hot Plates, we have some big news to catch up on. Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen restaurant, named after the chef's popular TV show, is opening its fourth (and largest) location at Harrah's Resort in Valley Center next spring. La Puerta, a cantina that's been in the Gaslamp for over a decade, opened its second location in Mission Hills. After being on hold for a few years, LA icon Roscoe's House of Chicken N Waffles announced it is opening soon in Barrio Logan. Chef Bernard Guillas, who has been at The Marine Room for almost 30 years, recently retired. For Two People, $50, Eddie is a fan of the Beagle Burger at The Regal Beagle in Mission Hills. Troy's pick is the omakase with dry-aged bluefin tuna at Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub in Oceanside. David recommends the chile verde at Cantina Mayahuel in North Park. My pick is the branzino and cheese cart at Seneca, Consortium Holdings' new restaurant at the InterContinental Hotel. Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from our listeners. Kathleen opens the show drinking a Boardwalk Blonde ale from Backshore Brewing Company in Ocean City, MD, which she picked up on her recent trip for a show in Selbyville, DE in July. TERMITE SHOUTOUTS: Kathleen is thrilled to go through the mail from the PO box, thanking Termite Mindy from New Orleans for her Nunzilla, and an anonymous Termite for her “Do You Have Any Ranch?” insulated cup. Termite Heather sent a box of crazy fun beer, which Kathleen can't wait to ice down and enjoy next week when her friend Ron White comes to stay. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich Pringles, which she thinks are delicious but won't replace her preference for her favorite Lay's original. She then moves on to taste Mexican Street Corn flavored Cheetos, which she also gives 2 thumbs up. Kathleen finalizes her tasting with the new Purely Balanced Tzatziki Ranch dressing from Litehouse. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN'S QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen provides an update on the Queens, announcing that Dolly has released a new single to support the release of her new perfume, Scent From Above. Cher tweeted this week about the joy that she experienced when she got to spend an evening with her idol, Tina Turner. Tanya Tucker is successfully recovering from hip surgery, and Chaka Khan made a surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival as part of an all-star ensemble cast closing off the weekend. MORE SUBWAY TUNA TURMOIL: As a follow-up to EP26 reviewing Subway's questionable tuna ingredients, Kathleen provides an update that in July 2021, Subway Restaurants Inc urged a federal judge in California to throw out a lawsuit accusing the chain of deceiving consumers about the content of its tuna. Subway maintains that the plaintiffs have offered no facts to support their claim that Subway's tuna did not contain "100% sustainably caught skipjack and yellowfin tuna.” 2021 OLYMPICS: Kathleen loves the Olympics, and is thrilled to read an update from Tokyo where Pizza Hut Japan is offering a Decathlon Pizza, with 10 types of meat in celebration of the Olympic games. Kathleen provides her opinion on all of the pizzas that her sister has delivered for her kids when she visits, and then rates her favorite Summer Olympic sports – she's a big fan of gymnastics and doesn't understand Dressage. WHITNEY HOLOGRAM CONCERT: Kathleen is amused as she reads an announcement that the estate of Whitney Houston is presenting “An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Concert,” a new residency at Harrah's Las Vegas. The production will begin in October 2021, and will feature the virtual image and voice of the late singer backed by a live four-piece band and background singers and dancers performing “all the hits.” NEW EXORCIST TRILOGY CONFIRMED: Kathleen is thrilled to share with the Termites that Universal is investing $400 million to film a new “Exorcist” trilogy, with Ellen Burstyn reprising her 1973 role as Chris MacNeil. Kathleen shares her own story about the first time she secretly watched The Exorcist despite her parents specifically stating that she wasn't allowed to. MAN STALKED BY GRIZZLY: Kathleen is shocked to read an article advising that a US Coast Guard chopper rescued a man in near Nome, Alaska who claimed he had been stalked and attacked by a bear for a week. The man hid from the grizzly in a building of a remote mining camp and wrote “SOS” on the roof until he was found. THE DATING GAME KILLER: As Termites know, Kathleen is a fan of true crime and Investigation Discovery, and she's shocked to read that a convicted serial killer that she has never heard of has died in a state hospital. Rodney James Alcala, 77, otherwise known as the “Dating Game Killer,” had been on California's death row since his 2010 conviction for the murders of four women and a 12-year-old girl.KIDS CAMP GONE WRONG: Kathleen is amused and provides her own colorful commentary when she reads an article detailing how staffers at Camp Quinebarge—a decades-old program in New Hampshire, are trying to help the camp make its comeback after a canceled summer season last year. Campers described six days of chaos to an exclusive report to The Boston Globe, with undercooked food, staffing shortages, brawls amongst the campers, and quarantine due to illness. Kathleen mentions that when she was a kid, “going to camp” referred to setting up a tent in the back yard and inviting neighbor kids over.LETHARGIC PYTHON: In continuing with her recent stories about snakes behaving badly, Kathleen squeals describing the horror that a group of New Jersey residents must have felt when they found a wounded 10-foot python on top of the trash. A local breeder who owns an online business selling and breeding pythons was issued summonses for animal cruelty. WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends watching “Sophie: A Murder In West Cork” on Netflix, and listening to the Chasing Ghislaine podcast on Audible. ROY G BIV Now that it is June, we're seeing a lot of so-called rainbow flags. In the City of New Orleans, this is nothing new. We have an entire section of Bourbon Street in which nearly all of the bars fly the so-called rainbow flag year-round. Harrah's Casino always displays the various flags that flew over New Orleans in her 300-year history. Well, almost. One is missing. It represented the period of Southern independence. That flag has been replaced by, you guessed it, the so-called rainbow flag. Not to be accused of insufficient praise for the June honorees (and I don't mean blushing brides), the City does put up some extra so-called rainbow banners (now even more inclusive!) on Rampart Street for the month of June. One of the area's hospitals used to fly the so-called rainbow flag beneath the state flag of Louisiana for the entire month. Last year, if memory serves, it was only up for a day and then disappeared. I don't know what the plan is for 2021. But I imagine there is a lot of pressure to put it back up. After all, it is 2021. At any rate, I keep saying “so-called rainbow” because this “rainbow” is deficient. It is actually an ideal symbol for sexuality that deviates from the natural biological kind as reflected in natural law and the revealed will of God. And it is also a matter of science, that is, if you believe in such things as biology. The symbol that has come to stand for The Acronym: (LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQ+, LGBTQIAA, LGBTTQQIAAP, LGGBDTTTIQQAAPP, and LGBTTQQFAGPBDSM) is actually not the rainbow. For hopefully we all remember the mnemonic ROY G BIV: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Seven colors. But take a look at the so-called rainbow flag. It only has six colors. Seven is the biblical number of completeness. It represents the fullness of the week of creation. It represents six days of work plus a sabbath rest. But six falls short. Six is the biblical number of incompleteness. The triple six is the mark of the beast, a parody of the Trinity. And there could be no more appropriate symbol for the various sexualities that fall short of how God created mankind. For God created mankind in His image in a beautiful binary of male and female, with a mandate to “be fruitful and multiply.” What binds together all of the various letters in The Acronym is that all fall short of the glory of God, insofar as none of them can bring children into the world, and none of them reflects the divine complementarity between male and female. All of these deviations from His order of creation fly in the face of biological science and nature. Another name for the so-called rainbow flag is the “pride flag.” Pride is the first of the traditional Seven Deadly Sins. It was Satan's pride that preceded his fall. It was his appeal to pride that led Adam and Eve astray. But Satan's temptation to pride failed to cause our Lord to stumble. And in fact, Jesus “emptied Himself” and took “the form of a servant,” and “He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” His ultimate act of love was the very opposite of pride. As the kids say, “Love wins.” The real rainbow, not the parody, is truly a symbol of inclusion. For “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” All is the most inclusive word of all. And the passage continues that this same all “are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” The rainbow was given as a sign of God's mercy after His judgment of mankind at the flood. So the rainbow, the true rainbow, the seven-colored rainbow that appears in the clouds - is a sign of inclusion and acceptance by God of all sinners who confess their sins and cry out to the Lord for His absolution. The waters of the flood remind us of the Law that calls us to repent, and the rainbow that appeared at the end of the ordeal is a reminder of the Gospel, the Good News that Jesus died for us - for all of us. Don't let pride get in the way of God's grace. And don't be fooled into thinking that there is no consequence for sin. Rather ask for God's mercy that you may be forgiven and given the grace to resist the devil, even as our Lord did. While the rainbow is not, strictly speaking, a sacrament, it is a physical manifestation of God's grace, and thus it is sacramental. Luther wrote: [I]t is an error to hold that the sacraments of the New Law differ from those of the Old Law in the effectiveness of their signs. For in this respect they are the same. The same God who now saves us by baptism and the bread, saved Abel by his sacrifice, Noah by the rainbow, Abraham by circumcision, and all the others by their respective signs. So far as signs are concerned, there is no difference between a sacrament of the Old Law and one of the New, provided that by the Old Law you mean that which God did among the patriarchs and other fathers in the days of the Law. ~ AE 36:65 So in the month of June, look upon the so-called rainbow flag as representing an incompleteness, but look to the heavens for a sign of the completeness of God's mercy. And then look to the Church's confession of the Word of God, and gather with your fellow “poor miserable sinners” where we are forgiven, and where the same water that was an instrument of God's wrath is now a sacrament of His grace. May the seven colors of the rainbow remind us of the completeness of God's love and mercy, and may this sign ever be an encouragement for us to live lives of gratitude in His grace.

Did someone lose it or is it part of a brilliant marketing scheme? Frank says that an insurance company is gambling on him to stay alive for over twenty years. He had to buy life insurance himself for the first time because he had life insurance through his employers over the years. He is an independent contractor for his current jobs. For serious collectors of vintage cars, the calendar is filled with top-flight auctions. In a sense, however, they all flow from the series of blockbuster sales in the mid-1980s that liquidated the collection of one man: William Harrah. The circumstances around the sales--namely why they had to happen in the first place--have never been widely understood. Until now. Automotive historian and museum curator Ken Gross recently explored the sale for Hagerty Insider. He will be speaking with Insider managing editor David Zenlea on what he learned and why the Harrah's sale still matters today.

Kathleen opens the show with a freshly poured spicy bloody Mary, mixed with Idaho Born & Bred craft potato vodka from Grand Teton Distillery. She moves on to tell a story about drinking vodka in Afghanistan with Kid Rock and Kellie Pickler while on a USO tour.DOLLY PARTON QUOTE: Kathleen reads a Dolly Parton quote involving diets and mashed potatoes. “BAD GOOD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food, Kathleen describes the recently-released Holiday Rice Krispies, in which she will dump cups of white sugar on the red-and-green cereal bites since she hates rice krispy squares. She has also purchased Mini Krispy Kreme crullers for the holidays, which she recommends warming in the microwave for a few seconds before eating.SOCIAL MEDIA TO FOLLOW: Kathleen tells listeners to follow Dionne Warwick on Twitter, who just joined the platform with help from her niece. She also thinks that everyone in the Twitterverse needs to follow her comedian friend Jackie Kashian for comedy that regularly makes Kathleen snort beer through her nose. UPDATE ON KATHLEEN’S QUEEN’S COURT: As listeners know, Kathleen’s #1 Queen is Dolly Parton, and Kathleen has just discovered Dolly’s 2016 cookbook “Dolly’s Dixie Fixin’s.” Dolly boasts about being up at 3am every day, which is why she’s a big fan of cooking breakfast for her husband Carl Dean. Kathleen discloses that if she is ever up at 3am, someone needs to put her to bed because she’s gone down a rabbit hole in a bar. She goes on to honor Dolly’s most recent reported “angel gesture” when she saved the life of one of her young costars while on the set of her new Netflix holiday movie “Christmas on the Square” when she pulled the child out of the way of an oncoming vehicle. BANKSY STRIKES AGAIN: In following the renowned street artist Banksy, Kathleen reports to listeners that a new Banksy mural of an elderly woman sneezing out her false teeth has just appeared in Totterdown. FALWELL JR DROPS CHARGES: In her ongoing obsession with Jerry Falwell Jr, Kathleen updates listeners on the drama surrounding the ousted president of Liberty University. Falwell Jr’s legal team has recently announced that he has dropped his defamation lawsuit against the university, with no reasons for the dismissal noted. RIP CHARLIE PRIDE: Kathleen is saddened by the death of Country Music superstar Charlie Pride, who recently passed away at 86 years of age due to complications of COVID-19. She loved his voice and especially his hit song “Kiss An Angel Good Morning,” and tells listeners a story that she found of Charlie playing in baseballs Negro League and being traded to another team for a bus. ANIMALS MOST LIKELY TO KILL YOU BY STATE: Kathleen continues with the new segment of the Pubcast: Animals Most Likely to Kill You (By State), as reported by the Center for Disease Control. If you live in Colorado and Connecticut, beware of mountain lions. Kathleen then tells listeners about a random afternoon that Ron White helped her cut down an “illegal tree.” ATTACK RATS AT CHIPOTLE: Kathleen reviews a terrifying story of rats besieging a NYC Chipotle restaurant, attacking staff at the restaurant over avocados. The staff developed survival tactics to ward off the infestation of rats, and eventually the location was closed when the rodents finally chewed through the computer wiring. ZOMBIE MINK: Expanding on EP 18’s Danish article regarding zombie mink, Kathleen advises listeners that reports from Canada are also stating that mink in Fraser Valley farms are testing positive for COVID-19. She admits that she didn’t realize that mink coats are still popular, and tells a story of watching Mike Tyson purchase mink coats in Las Vegas years ago while she was working at Harrah’s for the weekend. TIGER KING BILL PASSES: Like many listeners, Kathleen became mildly obsessed with the 2020 Netflix series “Tiger King.” As the series shone a light on personal or private zoos and the lack of care for the exotic animals, the US House of Representatives passed the Big Cat Public Safety Act last week which bans most big cat ownership. Kathleen applauds the legislation, and moves on to tell listeners of a recent news article involving a missing tiger in Knoxville, TN, which was never resolved.ALABAMA SNAKE: Kathleen is absolutely thrilled to discover a new HBO documentary called “Alabama Snake,” featuring a snake-handling preacher’s deadly plan to murder his wife with one of his snakes. She then tells listeners of an assignment that she took as an anchor for ESPN covering “Rattlesnake Roundup” in Big Spring, TX. ANIMAL BRIDGE: Kathleen reads a fantastic feel-good article about an overpass that was built specifically for wildlife to cross I-80 outside of Salt Lake City. CANADIAN CHRISTMAS ANGEL: In her support and love for all things Canadian, Kathleen shares a story with listeners about a man in British Columbia who saved a family from Georgia who were stranded while driving from the Atlanta area to Fairbanks, Alaska to meet up with their husband/father Tim. When they gave up driving in the snow, the local townspeople put up a Facebook message asking if anyone would be able to finish the drive to the Alaskan border. Gary Bath discussed the situation with his wife, and volunteered to drive the Marchessault family to be reunited with Tim. The group made it safely to the Yukon Border crossing, and Kathleen gushes that this has the makings of a Hallmark Christmas movie.AGING POLITICIANS: As mentioned in her act, Kathleen CANNOT believe that the US political system has so many members currently active well past the standard age of retirement. Diane Feinstein (Senator, CA) just turned 87 years of age, and Senator Chuck Schumer has had several painful conversations with Feinstein about stepping down from the Senate Judiciary Panel, but Feinstein continues to tell people that she’s running for another term. 2020 CHRISTMAS STAR: Kathleen has purchased a child’s telescope, and reminds listeners of a rare occurrence set to take place December 21st, 2020 when Jupiter and Saturn will cross paths and appear to be a mega-star, or “Christmas Star.”
