Season 5 is coming! Starting September 26, we'll release a new episode every Monday through the end of the year. We'll take a deep dive into the sermon each week, starting with “The Next Thing”, through 10:10 Life, a two-week series studying Jude, and ending with a Christmas Series called Rescue Mission. We have some special guests joining us this season and we can't wait to Deepen our relationship with Jesus through these conversations and we are praying you do, too.
We've reached the seventh and final week of If The Tomb is Empty, and it ends with Mount Calvary. This is the same mountain as Mount Moriah in week 1. There is no empty tomb without the crucifixion. Pastor Joby, Charles and Ali talk through what happens leading up to the crucifixion and the seven things Jesus said on the cross before Jesus's death. Praise God, we know how the story ends. Because of all this, everything leading up to this moment was designed by God on purpose for His glory and we can celebrate a resurrected King. If the tomb is empty, anything is possible. Along with this podcast, we encourage you to listen or watch Pastor Joby teach through each week, correlated with chapters in the book. It's week 6 and we're at the Mount of Transfiguration. This mountain is where Jesus took Peter, James and John to the top and demonstrated His glory, known as transfiguration. Peter, James and John experience an incredible, intense moment of worship, face-to-face with the manifest presence of God. After this, they walked down to meet a father, desperate at the foot of the mountain, where he asks Jesus to cast out a demon from his son. Sometimes we're in the place of the dad in the valley who is desperate for a miracle. Sometimes we're the disciples coming down from the mountain top sent on mission to gather, anoint and pray for those who need it. “Those moments refuel us, those moments inspire us that we're connected to Him...but the point of our life is not to sit and soak in that moment for our own glory. It's to be used by Him to be squeezed out wherever he takes us.” – Pastor Joby Martin Along with this podcast, we encourage you to listen or watch Pastor Joby teach through each week, correlated with chapters in the book. We have an enemy who wants to steal, kill and destroy. He's been at it in our lives since the beginning of human history, even with Jesus. What will you do when temptation comes your way? With what weapon will you fight? In week 5, we're at the Mount of Temptation where Jesus himself was tempted by the devil. Jesus never reasons with the enemy. He combats temptations of Satan with Scripture and truth of the Word. “If you want to stand in victory against the enemy–the victory that Jesus has already secured for us–then stand on the truth and don't waffle on the lies. You decide. Either you will be conformed to these lies, to the patterns of the world, or you will be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Pastor Joby Martin Along with this podcast, we encourage you to listen or watch Pastor Joby teach through each week, correlated with chapters in the book. This week we visit the fourth mountain – Mount of Beatitudes. This is the same mountain where Jesus famously preached the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus starts the Sermon on the Mount with eight blessings. As followers of Jesus, we get to live in blessing and in the kingdom of God, not because of how we perform or the boxes we check, but because we are in right-standing with the Lord. Identity precedes activity. “When we see God in light of who He is, it allows us to see ourselves in light of we really are, and our depravity is greater than we ever infinitely imagined. And as we continue to grow in Him, our understanding of His glory and His wonder and His majesty is infinitely greater than we ever imagined.” – Pastor Joby Martin Along with this podcast, we encourage you to listen or watch Pastor Joby teach through each week, correlated with chapters in the book. Anything that competes for the worthiness of the one true God is an idol. We serve a faithful God who loves us enough to strip away idols to bring us closer to Him. In the book of Exodus, Israel was covered in idol worship. God sent a prophet, Elijah up to Mount Carmel to face the king of Israel and 850 prophets of false gods. When the Israelites called out to these idols, they were ultimately let down. Because that's what idols do; they always lead to disappointment. When God's not giving you what you want, do you still trust Him? “It's not the amount of faith you have; it's the object of your faith that matters” – Pastor Joby Martin Along with this podcast, we encourage you to listen or watch Pastor Joby teach through each week, correlated with chapters in the book. This week, Pastor Joby, Charles and Ali talk about Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt and the introduction to the Ten Commandments. After God led Moses and the Israelites out of Egypt and into freedom, God called Moses up to Mount Sinai to lay out the Ten Commandments. The order of this is important, and this episode explains why. 3 while Moses went up to God. The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. – Exodus 19:3-4 Along with this podcast, we encourage you to listen or watch Pastor Joby teach through each week, correlated with chapters in the book. In the sixth week of The Upside Down Kingdom series, Pastor Joby taught through the kingdom of God and satisfaction. Last week we asked the question, what are you doing with your one and only life? Often the comforts of this world have the ability to quiet God's calling and lull us into spiritual sleep. When we take our eyes off the mission God calls us to in the great commission, we end up chasing pleasure instead of purpose. God has put eternity in our hearts so we would live for his glory. “If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” – C.S. Lewis The next season of Deepen with Pastor Joby Martin starts next week! Season 4 will cover the next sermon series and Pastor Joby's new book, If The Tomb is Empty. We're looking forward to what God will do through the next seven weeks. If you missed the sermon from this week, watch it at coe22.com/sermons.
What are you doing with your one and only life? This week we dive into the kingdom of God and work. God's calling looks different for everyone, but we know God created each and every one of us for one purpose: to live out the great commission laid out in Matthew 28:19, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” The key question is this: what is your role in the great commission? How are you leveraging your time, talent, and treasures God has given you? Are you living your life on-mission where you are? PG-13 warning: This week's episode is best for adult ears. In week 4 of The Upside Down Kingdom, Pastor Joby teaches through the radical difference between what the world and God says about sex. This week he's joined by Pastors Ryan Britt and Trey Brunson. We see how the world views sex all over movies, television and magazines, that sex is merely physical. But God created sex for intimacy between a husband and wife, fueled by exclusivity in the covenant of marriage. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 If you missed the sermon from this week, watch it at coe22.com/sermons.
This week Pastors Joby, Britt and Vinke dive into the kingdom of God and power. The world's definition of greatness is being lifted up at the expense of others; Jesus defined greatness as being the servant of all. Greatness in the kingdom means being close to Jesus, submitted to his authority, enduring suffering and serving like Jesus served. Join us as we discuss what it looks like to be a faithful follower of Jesus no matter where he has placed you in this world. If you missed the sermon from this week, watch it at coe22.com/sermons.
It's week two of The Upside Down Kingdom series and Pastor Joby is joined again by Pastors Jonathan Vinke and Ryan Britt. Join their conversation as they continue to explore how living in the kingdom of God relates to money, generosity and what we treasure. According to Jesus, money is the number one competitor for our heart; want to know who or what you worship? Check your bank statement. God wants us to be blessed and free by putting him first in all things. "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money." Matthew 6:24 For more resources on money and generosity, including budgeting and planning tools, visit coe22.com/resources. If you missed the sermon from this week, watch it at coe22.com/sermons.
This week, Pastor Joby is joined by Pastors Jonathan Vinke and Ryan Britt, and together they continue the conversation after week one of The Upside Down Kingdom series. Our reality operates with two kingdoms: the kingdom of God and kingdom of this world. We were brought to this world by God for a purpose with an enemy who wants to steal, kill and destroy. But we know God is Lord over His entire Kingdom, both in Heaven and on earth. Listen as they talk through lies of the enemy, sins of the world and flesh, and what it looks like to live as an image bearer of God in His kingdom on earth. “Enemy-occupied territory---that is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful king has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us to take part in a great campaign of sabotage.”- C.S. Lewis If you missed the sermon from this week, watch it at coe22.com/sermons.
