In this episode, Brian and Cory interview Roy Moran and explore the paradoxes of leadership in the context of Jesus' teachings. We discuss the shift from celebrity culture to a more humble, servant-oriented leadership style, emphasizing the importance of empowering ordinary people to lead and make disciples. The conversation highlights global perspectives on discipleship, the role of humility in leadership, and the vision for future leadership that prioritizes community and collaboration over status.

In this episode I discuss the principles of the Upside Down Kingdom.
In this episode, we move on into Luke 7:1-17. Within this passage we see two different miracles, one involving a centurion, and one involving a widow. Together we discuss these two different healing stories and all that Jesus demonstrates about His upside down kingdom. Following His Sermon on the Plain, we have the opportunity to see Jesus live out these teachings. Living in Jesus' upside down kingdom, we are invited to love, to see, to care for, to trust others, and to identify all Jesus is doing in our lives and in the lives of those around us.
We are about mid-way through summer and also at the halfway point in our summer sermon series, Upside Down Kingdom: The Gospel According to Mark. This week we're in Mark chapter 7, where we find Jesus going head-to-head with the Pharisees. And once again, they are more than a bit peeved at Jesus and His disciples. Apparently, Jesus & company are exhibiting blatant disregard for the Jewish laws regarding... are you ready for this?... washing their hands. Actually, it wasn't even a law; it was a tradition. And while there was deeper purpose infused into the tradition, the Pharisees had totally missed it. And hard as it is to admit, sometimes we are prone to missing it too. We get focused on the wrong thing, and miss the forest for the trees. I invite you to join us this Sunday at 11 AM. In this episode, Cory and Brian interview Alan Hirsch and explore the dynamics of kingdom movements, emphasizing the importance of decentralized leadership and the dangers of centralized power structures. We discuss the significance of metaphors in understanding movements, the cultural implications of fame in leadership, and practical insights for ordinary disciple makers. We also highlight the need for a shift from consumer-driven church models to organic, community-focused movements that prioritize discipleship and service.
The Lord's Prayer | Upside Down Kingdom | Evan Henson by Akouo Church
The love that is the hallmark of Jesus' kingdom calls us to lay down our desires to win and to find that in losing we might gain the greater reward of transforming our enemies into friends. Upside Down love wins by losing… In the upside-down Kingdom of God, the lowly are lifted, the broken are blessed, and the hungry are filled. We don't have to measure up to enter the kingdom of God. We don't even have to live a certain way to earn the kingdom of God. You can't earn it! That reality is all of us have been granted access to the kingdom of God through Jesus, not because of how we live, but in spite of ourselves. And because we've been invited, the way we live our lives changes in response.
Pastor issues an inter-generational challenge
In part two of this two-part episode, Nadim Costa shares his insights on leadership, cultural differences, and the importance of personal faith in ministry. He discusses the challenges of applying Western leadership models in different cultural contexts, the role of theology in ministry, and the transformative power of serving marginalized communities, particularly the disabled in the Middle East. Nadim emphasizes the need for a personal relationship with God and encourages listeners to make themselves available to serve others without limitations.
“There's no place like home. There's no place like home. There's no place like home.” Dorothy Gale That classic line from the movie, The Wizard of Oz, has become iconic - representing the familiarity and comfort of home. As Dorothy wakes up in her own bed at the end of the movie, still murmuring those words, it reinforces the meaning of coming back to a place of safety, where you are known, loved and welcomed. Dorothy has had her grand adventure, but there's nothing better than coming home and sleeping in your own bed again. This week, in our sermon series, Upside Down Kingdom: The Gospel According to Mark, we find Jesus returning home after some extended traveling. But his experience of coming home is nothing like Dorothy's. Sure, Nazareth is familiar, but not safe; and Jesus is certainly not welcomed. His family and friends aren't exactly impressed by the boy from the 'hood, now that he's all grown up. And His teaching definitely rubs them the wrong way. Just who does He think He is? In this special NAIDOC Week message, guest speaker Jonathan Lilley shares a powerful word on the upside down nature of God's kingdom. A proud Warrami man and sixth-generation Christian, Jonathan weaves personal stories, scripture, and cultural wisdom to highlight the hope and justice Jesus brings. From Isaiah to Mark, he unpacks how Christ came to empower the marginalized, uplift the broken, and invite all people into restoration. With honesty and grace, Jonathan challenges us to listen deeply, act with compassion, and follow the King who brings true change. This is a timely and moving message of faith, reconciliation, and hope.
In a world obsessed with power, comfort, success, and recognition, Jesus flips the script revealing the true way to find joy and satisfaction in this life and the life to come.
Pastor reminds us that many are called but few are chosen.
“Expect the unexpected.” You've heard that said before, haven't you? And yet, we all seem to carry around a boatload of expectations... Expectations that people and things will do and go the way we expect them to do and go! And when they don't? Well, it can create a lot of chaos. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. As we come to our study in the gospel of Mark this week, we find Jesus continuing to break rules and shatter expectations in ways that rock people's worlds - in all the best ways. In part one of this two-part episode, Cory and Brian interview Nadim Costa who shares his profound journey from Lebanon's civil war to a dynamic faith in Christ. He discusses the paradoxes of leadership in the context of the Upside Down Kingdom, emphasizing that God often chooses the unlikely over the powerful. Through transformative stories and encounters, Nadim illustrates how God is moving in unexpected ways, particularly in the Middle East, and challenges listeners to embrace a faith that is interactive and alive.

Jesus introduces a revolutionary kingdom in the Sermon on the Mount. He contrasts the pattern, power, and product of two kingdoms: the old one which we are currently under, and the new one which is to come. Jesus' teaching goes against every natural instinct, and represents a reversal of the world's values. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on March 21, 1999. Series: The Mount; Life in the Kingdom. Scripture: Luke 6:17-26. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Whispers are subtle, gentle, subdued. But they can also be powerful... if you lean in and really listen! As we come to our study in the gospel of Mark this week, we find Jesus interacting with His followers in a new way - a quiet, gentle and unexpected way. In this episode, we interview Rob Wegner and talk about the contrasting paradigms of leadership as exemplified by Jesus and the prevalent models in American churches. We explore everything from the dangers of volunteerism that leads to a domesticated version of mission, the temptation of leadership roles, and the importance of choosing obscurity over fame. We also highlight the significance of being rooted in community and the transformative power of ordinary people in the mission of the church.
Give It Away | Upside Down Kingdom | Abel Ortega by Akouo Church
Jesus introduces a revolutionary kingdom in Luke chapter 6. He appoints leaders and preaches a sermon outlining his kingdom program, starting with a value system laid out in the "beatitudes." These blessings and woes run against our natural instincts and the values of our world. Yet they line up with reality in deep ways, leading us to a far richer life now and into eternity. Application Questions: 1. How do the beatitudes challenge the normal approach to life in Los Angeles? 2. What about the beatitudes scare you, and why? What about the beatitudes excite you, and why? 3. What do you think it would take for your value system to match up to what we find in the beatitudes? How does Jesus and his gospel fit in?
Humility is a weapon of our warfare.
The Chosen has become an international sensation. It's available in more than 50 different languages, in countries all around the world. And whether you know what it's about or not, doesn't the title alone pique your interest? I mean, don't we all want to be chosen? Humans are wired for belonging. We're designed for community. We all want to be desired, known, and loved... to be chosen. We are about a quarter of the way through our summer study, Upside Down Kingdom: The Gospel According to Mark. This week, we find Jesus picking teammates to be part of His inner circle. Except, He doesn't exactly pick the cream of the crop. Instead, it seems more like He's scraping the bottom of the barrel! Jesus chooses the rejected, the outcast, the traitor, and the skeptic. He surrounds Himself with those who have been passed over or left out - the ones who didn't quite measure up. And He invites them to belong. In doing so, He establishes a new kind of family - one where the misfits and marginalized can find a home. And so can you. I invite you to join us this Sunday at 11 AM. In this opening episode, Brian and Cory cast vision for this new series on where we will explore the radical invitation of Jesus to lead in a way that flips everything upside-down. While Western models of leadership often chase platform, power, and personality, Jesus modeled something entirely different: surrender, service, and spiritual authority rooted in love. We explore key biblical passages—Mark 10, Philippians 2, and John 13—and show how this isn't just theory. It's how movements are actually growing today, from underground networks in the Global South to ordinary disciple-makers in places like Kansas City.

This week, I will initiate being a peacemaker in a specific relationship.

Pastor encourages us to be the light to a dark, confused world.
Do you remember life before cell phones? Or email or the internet? Did you ever use traveler's checks or money orders? How about cameras? Kodak Brownie? Instamatic? Polaroid? 35mm? Change is inevitable. And often, it's beneficial! Yet many, if not most of us resist change, even when what's new is better than the old. Change is uncomfortable. In fact, if doing something new or trying a new way doesn't feel awkward at first, you're probably not doing it right! Often, change feels like a loss. We like what we know, even if it's not working very well. As we pick up our study in Mark's gospel this week, we find Jesus continuing to ruffle the feathers of the religious leaders. Jesus' way of doing things breaks all the rules of their religious game. And they are not happy about it. The old ways are just fine, thank you very much. The way to Salvation is not Broad and Wide...it's a Narrow Gate.
Everyone knows... Humpty Dumpty had a problem. He was broken beyond repair. Scrambled beyond saving. Not even the most capable of men could put the pieces back together and restore him to wholeness. As we come to our study in Mark's gospel this week, we find Jesus engaging with the broken in His world. And the good news for them, and for us, is that He is more than capable of bringing healing and restoring wholeness to the sick, broken, and wounded places of our lives. Revenge. An eye for an eye. Consequences for actions. This Sunday we will continue our series, The Upside-Down Kingdom, with Matthew 5:38-48. The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus' announcement of the in-breaking of the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus has already challenged us on anger, lust, infidelity, and truthfulness. In our text this week, Jesus challenges our perspective on personal justice and how we treat those who despise us. We can hear the words, “love your enemies,” and give them a casual nod, or say something like, “we're called to love but not to like people,” but when we take the calling of Jesus Christ seriously, this might be the most difficult applications of the gospel to our lives. Go read Matthew 5:38-48 before Sunday. Note the response in your own heart and how quickly you might start minimizing or explaining away the actual calling we have.------------------------------------------- Connect with us on Social Media Website | Instagram | Threads | Facebook | Vimeo------------------------------------------- Download our AppApple App Store | Google Play Store

In this powerful message, Pastor Chris Rieber takes us deep into Luke 12 to explore Jesus’ call to be "rich toward God." In a world that constantly urges us to build our own empires and store up treasures for ourselves, this sermon flips that narrative on its head—inviting us to embrace the upside-down Kingdom of God. Pastor Chris unpacks what it means to reject the temporary riches of the flesh and instead invest in what truly matters: God's eternal Kingdom. Whether you're struggling with materialism, seeking deeper purpose, or wanting to align your heart more fully with God's values, this message will challenge and encourage you to live generously, dependently, and eternally minded. Key Themes: The danger of earthly greed Eternal perspective vs. temporary gain Kingdom-minded generosity Living as a steward, not an owner Listen in and be reminded of what it truly means to be rich—in the ways that matter most.
