The Bible is trustworthy. But how do you know—and how do you use it rightly? In Lesson 28 of Christian Ethics and the Old Testament, Dave Rich brings the series' extended examination of scriptural authority to a close and turns the corner toward a foundational question: how do we interpret the Bible we've established as God's Word?Rich opens by tackling the charge of circular reasoning head-on. Is it logically valid to prove the Bible's authority from the Bible itself? He argues yes—and shows why that's the only coherent approach when dealing with any ultimate source of truth. Archaeological evidence and fulfilled prophecy support Scripture's claims, but they don't serve as the foundation. The Bible is its own authority. From there, Rich moves into hermeneutics—the art and science of biblical interpretation—grounding the class in the literal, grammatical, historical method endorsed by Calvin, Luther, and the church's own statement of faith. The goal is simple: discover the original, natural meaning of the text.To make that concrete, Rich walks through several interpretive errors that produce ethical errors—beginning with proof texting and then addressing what he calls hyper-literalism. Using the holy kiss, foot washing, and the head covering passage in 1 Corinthians 11, he demonstrates the difference between a timeless biblical principle and its culturally bound expression. Wooden, context-free obedience to the form can actually undermine the principle the text is trying to teach.Clear thinking about interpretation is inseparable from clear thinking about Christian ethics. ★ Support this podcast ★
Join Izzy and Zoe as they conclude their deep dive into 1 Thessalonians, unpacking chapter 5 and exploring what it means to stay spiritually awake, prepare for Christ's return, and live out faith with radical intentionality in a world that desperately needs hope. This episode tackles one of the most discussed yet misunderstood topics in Scripture: the second coming of Jesus, why we don't need to fear it, and how preparation isn't about knowing the details but about staying awake to what God is doing right now. Discover what it truly means when Paul says the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night, why being children of light changes everything about how we live, and the difference between spiritual sleepiness and the sleep of death. The episode dives into the armor of God, the importance of staying prepared not through fear but through faith, love, and hope, and why Jesus' return should motivate us to live with urgency, love others well, and share the gospel boldly. This is for anyone who has ever been anxious about the end times, wondered what it looks like to be spiritually awake, or struggled with how to live faithfully when the future feels uncertain. The conversation also unpacks Paul's final instructions to the Thessalonian church, from respecting leaders who serve sacrificially to making peace in community, rejoicing always, praying continually, and giving thanks in all circumstances. Learn what it means to not repay wrong for wrong, how practicing thankfulness leads to humility, and why the shortest verse in the original Bible is "rejoice always." Plus, the episode answers the burning question: what on earth is a holy kiss, and are we actually supposed to greet each other that way? Paul continues his teaching about the return of Christ. He explains that the day of the Lord will come suddenly and unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. Believers, however, should not be caught off guard because they live in the light and should stay awake, alert, and self-controlled, clothed with faith, love, and hope of salvation. God has destined them not for wrath but for salvation through Jesus, who died so they may live with Him.Paul then gives practical instructions for Christian living:Encourage, help, and build up one another.Respect leaders who work hard among them.Be patient with everyone, avoid revenge, and always pursue goodness.Rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances.Do not quench the Spirit, despise prophecies, or accept evil—but test everything and hold onto what is good.He closes with a prayer that God will sanctify them completely in spirit, soul, and body until Christ's coming, assuring them that God is faithful to accomplish it. Paul asks for their prayers, urges them to greet one another warmly, and insists that his letter be read to all believers, ending with a blessing of grace.

George set up our journey through the Apostle Paul's letter to the Romans by beginning at the end (chapter 16). He also offered us some context to understand how to read it as ecclesiology (about the church and who makes up the people of God). Paul's point is who benefits from Jesus? Everybody! Exactly as they are. Romans is not about individuals apart from the collective. It's a church made up of people with what seems like impossible lines of difference to cross. But at the center of it all, Paul saw a love drawing us toward God and one another. Romans will be teaching us how to do the actual work of building community. SLIDES GEORGE READ IN OUR GATHERING The earliest Jewish interpreters of the Torah were concerned that the biblical text remain a living text. This meant that it constantly had to be reinterpreted faithfully in new cultural contexts. If it was just being repeated as it had been in the past, then it was a text that no longer had a living word for the present. —Michael Fishbane, Inner-Biblical Exegesis of Interpretation in Ancient Israel To Paul, as with Jesus, any disagreements leading to potential disunity were in direct opposition to the gospel message and its power to save all people. “The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them” ― Thomas Merton, No Man Is An Island

David Mathis | The call to “greet one another with a holy kiss” may strike us as odd and outdated. But what lessons might God have for us in this uncomfortable command?

This is a follow up from yesterday's episode about mechanical instruments of music offered to God in relation to psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. The question was a thought experiment that is designed to hang one on the horns of a dillema, since the command to greet one another with a holy kiss is specific then why do we not obey it today yet we draw a line of fellowship when it comes to mechanical instruments of music being offered to God with psalms, hymns, and spritual songs? There is a very simple answer to this. I am more than a little ashamed that I did not bring this out yesterday. I hope you tune in and consider what I have to say. God's people are living between two important times in history—the first coming of Christ and the promise of His return in glory. As those transformed by the Gospel, we are to bear up under suffering and spiritual attack by pursuing holiness and fixing our hope on the Savior's appearing. Though God's people are “not home yet,” they continue to reflect the virtues of redeemed people—faith, hope, and love! 1 Thessalonians 5:25-28CC: Love

2/5/23 - Paul greets all those he has previously met in Rome, and gives final exhortation to be aware of false teachers.
Corinth was one of the largest and most important cities in the Roman world during Paul's days. It was steeped in paganism and every form of wicked distraction. It was also a place Paul spent several years. It's no wonder that Paul wrote two of his most forceful and humble letters to this people that he grew to love so much.In his second (biblically published) letter to the Corinthians, Paul encourages the people he loves to press on to know God and follow Him more closely, something each one of us needs to hear today.-----------LINKS----------Support 10WB on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/10weekbibleThe 10 Week Bible - http://www.10WeekBible.comTwitter: @DarrenHibbs - https://twitter.com/DarrenHibbsSign up for my newsletter - http://www.darrenhibbs.comGet a copy of the 10 Week Bible Study today - https://www.amazon.com/Darren-Hibbs/e/B00B4I47CE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl2&tag=darrenhcom0a-20&linkId=401f3d79974c70929517936977e32df9My other YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChUU0XHSHuhSyN8qk-7efYgSupport the show
