On October 22, 2023, we began the book of Hebrews. This Sunday, almost a year later, we come to the final passage in the book. Throughout the book, the author shows Jesus' superiority over all things. With exegesis of multiple Old Testament passages, he proved that Jesus fulfills God's purposes in the Old Covenant and His promises in the New Covenant. Then, the Hebrew Christians were urged to run with endurance and endure suffering as God's loving discipline because Jesus is better. Chapters 12 & 13 were filled with commands demonstrating what it means to live like Jesus is better. If Jesus is better, let brotherly love continue, aid those in prison, honor marriage, and obey your leaders. In 13:18-25, the final section, through the author's request for prayer and his prayerful benediction, he explains where the power comes to live like Jesus is better. Though we are to emulate godly examples and understand right doctrine, the power to follow Christ faithfully comes only from God. Before concluding his "word of exhortation," the author himself asks these readers to pray for him and his companions because they desire to act honorably in all things. Even the author, who has been exhorting these wavering Christians in truth, knows he cannot live faithfully without the power of Christ and the prayers of the saints. In the same way, he prays that God would "equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever" (v. 21). In this benediction, we see that the faithfully maturing Christian life (that endures hardships as discipline and acts honorably in all things) only grows strong as it grows more aware of its weakness and more dependent upon Christ in all things. "Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things" (v. 18). I. Pray For One Another (v. 18-21) II. Depend Upon God's Power In Christ (v. 20-21) III. All Christians are saints, set apart for God. Let us follow Christ's example in John 17 and pray for one another. He was praying not for himself but for those who would believe in him. What a great encouragement it would be to know the church is laboring in prayer with God's help for one another. Listen to Michael Urch's exhortation for more.
In this week's sermon, Pastor Robbey discussed the power of collective prayer as illustrated in Acts 12. He described how the early church prayed earnestly when Peter was imprisoned by Herod, emphasizing the importance of praying together as a community. The sermon touched on historical instances of persecution against Christians and highlighted the miraculous release of Peter by an angel, showcasing God's power in response to prayer. Pastor Robbey urged us to believe in the power of prayer and to rely on God's strength, encouraging us to make prayer a priority in our daily lives.

How do you most often pray for others? Prayers about circumstances and the temporal challenges of life are good, but let's also allow the way Paul prayed for others to challenge how we pray for one another as well.
In Our Race Issues, Pray for One Another and Make a Difference Through Repentance and Reconciliation; Jesus Followers Are Placed Here for These Times MESSAGE SUMMARY: With regards to our race issues, it will not be through political parties, rallies, elections, slogans, or marches that our attitudes and practices are changed or the souls of our nations are converted. The deep change, which we all need, will only be through revival that comes from repentance – turning away from our sin and toward God and his righteous ways in Jesus Christ. As Jesus commanded us in John 5:12: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”. Also, in John 13:34-35, Jesus commanded us: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”. Jesus' “one another” is all inclusive and not just those that look like you and/or of your culture. We do not have just a “skin problem”, we have a “sin problem”. As Dr. Tony Evans of Oak Cliff Bible Church in Dallas Texas recently said: “The evangelical church needs to speak up where it has been silent on injustice and racism. The biggest problem, in the culture today, is the failure of the church. We would not even have a racial crisis in America if the church had not consistently failed to deal with racism as the severe sin it is. But because the church has historically ignored and downplayed it {racial crisis}, the issue still exists. Where the church is called to set an example, we have cowered.”. The Bible makes it unequivocally clear that we are all made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27): “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”. Any hostility between brothers and sisters in Christ is an affront to God and damages our souls and the “blessed community” so many of us seek. You can start real “racial change” right where you are -- in your own heart first and then in your own relationship with God. At that point, you can then lead the change your own community -- one person at a time; one relationship at a time; and one act a time. You can reach out and build a relationship with someone different than you. However, doing nothing is no longer an option for us. Let us pray for one another about these things and let us get out and make a difference in our local communities. God has placed you and me here for such a time as this. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I can relate to the Israelites in the desert and their desire to return to what is predictable — even if it is miserable. Change is hard. Grant me the courage of Moses to walk the delicate balance of being still and moving on to the new life in Christ that you have for me. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 72). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Resentment. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Compassion. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). What do the "One Anothers" of bearing burdens, and encouraging have in common? They require you to know how to do each of them. They require that the "One Anothers" are known bye other "One Anothers". Being known can be scary, especially to be fully known. For people to know the real us means revealing something we might be scared to reveal. Today we talk about revealing to one another is part of the healing one another in God's plan.

Dr. Jeff Chandler, preaching from James 5:13-16, talks about the impact of prayer on our lives and the lives of others.
When we strive to be a biblically strong church, we also find ourselves obedient to something Jesus calls us to do: to pray for one another. In this sermon, Pastor Snook preaches from a short passage in James 5 about the need for us in the body of Christ to intercede for one another.

The Apostle Paul is our example, and as you have read, he is continually giving thanks for everyone he knows or has heard who are in Christ. Christians he has never met: "First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world. 9 For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you, 10 always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you." Romans 1:8-10 Christians, he is about to chew out: "I thank my God always concerning you, for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus," 1 Corinthians 1:4 Churches Paul started, and has heard they are thriving." "For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you, and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers; 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him." Ephesians 1:15-17 Christians he knows and loves. "I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, 5 in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now." Philippians 1:3-5 And so today, we pray for one another in gratitude for you all and God's miraculous work. "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." Passage: James 5:16 Preacher: Hans Googer
James 5:13-18 - At first glance, the commands to confess our sins to one another and to pray for one another may seem a little detached from the central call to love one another, but they are an avenue into closeness and healing that we underestimate at great cost. Here we find the key to fellowship as we really are and the power of God as He really is. A sermon by Cameron Heger. [Part 3 of the series "One Anothering: The Shape of Life Together in the Family of God"] Questions for reflection: 1) What are your habits of prayer like right now? Even if they're minimal, are they weighted more to particular subjects? 2) Do you typically think of prayer and confession as more individual disciplines or communal disciplines? 3) This side of the cross, what is the purpose of confessing sins to one another? 4) What are the potential dangers of ignoring these two commands? 5) If our church took these two commands seriously, how do you think we would be changed?

This week, we wrap up our look at the "One Anothers" of the New Testament, exploring what it looks like to love one another by the grace and mercy of God at work in our hearts, in our church, in our community and beyond. Sermon recorded August 14th, 2023 Pastor Bob Flayhart preaching at Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church in Birmingham , AL.
Preacher: Nate Pugh Date: 08/13/2023 Scripture passage: James 5:13-20
We are called to pray for one another.

The most popular passage from the bible spoken at weddings actually has very little to do with marriage, and that is 1 Corinthians 13:4, “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast…” Of course, all these attributes of love will thrive in a marriage when they are in the hearts of husbands and wives, but the Apostle Paul taught us this passage to plant them deeply in the hearts of the redeemed. This is what a church can be! Yet he began with a warning: “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” 1 Corinthians 13:1. Cornerstone, it is time to love, urgently! It is getting spiritually darker everywhere, even in the ‘Church'. Division, lawlessness, hatred, bigotry, authoritarianism…and do not be mistaken, it is all aimed at the people of God! Now, more than ever before in our lifetimes, we must speak truth and love, both inside the walls of our church and outside! We are going to need each other for the journey ahead, so join us in our summer series as we look at the ‘one anothers' from the bible, each of which will help us ‘Love like Jesus'.
