EP 523: Stop Trying to Change Your Parents with Sarah

Over It And On With It

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 7, 2026 36:50

Moving back in with family can awaken old wounds faster than years of personal growth can prepare us for. In this first coaching episode of 2026, Christine supports Sarah, who recently returned to the United States after six years abroad and is temporarily living with her parents. What she expected to be a short transition has turned into a deep emotional reckoning with childhood patterns, triggers, and the urge to "fix" family dynamics. Christine helps Sarah understand how protector parts, formed in childhood, take over when old environments reactivate unresolved trauma. Together, they explore how to release long-held anger safely, set boundaries that are actually enforceable, and begin reparenting the inner child with compassion rather than control. If family interactions leave you feeling dysregulated, angry, or guilty, this episode will help you see those reactions through a new lens and give you tools to stop trying to change your parents and start changing how you care for yourself.   Consider / Ask Yourself: Do you feel like all your growth disappears the moment you go home? Are you the family fixer, peacekeeper, or emotional mediator? Do you struggle with guilt or rage after spending time with your parents? Are you trying to set "boundaries" that you cannot actually control?   Key Insights and A-HAs: The urge to fix family dynamics often comes from a childhood protector part trying to create safety. What feels like "I can't help it" is usually a trauma-based habit, not a true lack of choice. Asking someone to change is a request, not a boundary. Boundaries are about what you will do. Rage is often stored grief from unmet childhood needs and must be safely released. Your inner child learns to trust you only through consistency, not intention.   How to Deepen the Work: When you feel the impulse to fix, pause and thank that part for trying to protect you. Create a release valve for anger such as screaming into a pillow, shaking your body, or release writing. Practice leaving triggering situations instead of confronting them in the moment. Reparent your inner child through consistent safety rather than promises of change. Ask yourself: "What can I do right now that I actually control?"   Coaching with Christine Christine currently has just two remaining openings in her private one-on-one coaching practice. She has been coaching individuals since 2004 and only works with a small number of clients at a time to provide deep, personalized support. What if eternity isn't escaping this world—but living in a resurrected one, fully renewed by Jesus? For many of us, our childhood picture of heaven looked more like floating on clouds than living in a place that feels real, physical, and gloriously renewed. But Scripture tells a far better story. In Revelation 21, we're given a vision of where everything is ultimately headed—a new heaven and a new earth where Jesus reigns, peace is complete, perfection is normal, and God Himself dwells personally with His people. In this message, we trace the arc from Christmas to eternity, from the birth of Jesus to His promised return. You'll learn what the Bible actually teaches about heaven, resurrection, and the future God has secured for those who trust in Jesus. No more fear. No more pain. No more distance between us and God. I loved sitting down with Camron Adibi for this full conversation. His way of understanding horses reminds us to slow down, listen with our whole selves and meet them with curiosity and care. Camron is an equine behavior educator, sound practitioner and host of the Centar podcast. His blend of tuning forks, vibration work and horse centered teaching brings a thoughtful and heartfelt approach to partnership.Camron shared how horses take in sound, energy and vibration differently than we do, and how their sensitivity can help us become more aware of our own inner state. Hearing him describe how sound supports calm and regulation for both species was a beautiful reminder of the wisdom horses carry when we let them guide the pace.He also talked about his path from therapeutic riding to teaching to creating a life woven with horses, sound and storytelling. His move to Aiken began with one conversation and one instinct, showing how new chapters can appear when we follow what feels aligned.TakeawaysHorses sense emotion and energy before words are spoken.Tuning forks and sound work support grounding for horses and humans.Partnership grows when we listen first and offer space for preference.Meaningful change often begins with one small, honest step.Get to know Camron's work and journeyThe Centaur Podcast on Apple and SpotifySubstack: The Centaur by Camron AdibiWebsite: https://www.camronadibi.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CamronAdibiFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/camronadibiSend us a text Support the show✨ Join My TEDx Spokane Journey! Today Daily Devotional

We proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. — 1 John 1:2 After coming through the Christmas season, we stand today on the verge of a new year. In many homes Christmas decorations are coming down, and Christmas parties are over. Perhaps, like me, you are thinking of the year ahead, imagining and dreaming what God may have in store for you. As we look ahead to the new year and new seasons ahead, we also do well to look back at what God has done for us. Many years after Jesus had brought salvation by dying to pay for our sin and rising to new life for our sake, the apostle John wrote about his own experience as a follower of Christ. We can picture John looking back on what had happened to him when he first encountered Jesus. “The life appeared,” says John, and his words express the wonder and amazement he experienced when the Word of life came to him one day and changed his life (see Luke 5:1-11).Though we have not encountered Jesus in the same way his first disciples, like John, did, we still have an amazing story to tell. We have fellowship with the Father because Jesus, God's Son, has come to make him known. Through faith in Jesus, we experience forgiveness of sin and new life, restoring our relationship with God.Christmas brings us joy for what God has done and offers hope for what lies ahead. May your life, today and in the coming year, be filled with the joy of knowing Christ the Savior. Lord Jesus, as you became one of us so many years ago, stay close now and in the years ahead. Deepen our joy in knowing you. Amen.

What if the greatest gift of Christmas isn't something you give or receive—but the One you choose to bow down to? The Magi traveled nearly 800 miles on little more than a prophecy and a star, believing that if the promised King had truly come, He was worth seeking at all costs. In Week 3 of Real Men of Christmas, we look at these wise men—not for their crowns or status, but for their posture. While Herod clung tightly to his own throne and the religious leaders stayed comfortable in tradition, the Magi refused to miss Jesus. They followed God's prompting, bowed before the true King, and opened their treasures in extravagant worship. Pastor Joby unpacks why their response still matters today: because every one of us approaches Jesus like Herod, the religious leaders, or the Magi. And the gifts we bring reveal what we believe about Him—our King, our Christ, our Savior. As we celebrate Christmas and partner with Compassion International to love “the least of these,” this message invites us to examine our hearts, our worship, and the direction of our lives. What gift will you bring to Jesus this Christmas—and which direction will He lead you next?

What if the greatest announcement in human history wasn't given to kings, scholars, or warriors—but to ordinary men working the night shift? In Luke 2:8–20, the first people to hear about the birth of Jesus weren't the powerful or prestigious—they were shepherds keeping watch in the dark. In this message, we look at how God used these unnoticed, rugged men to teach us what real strength looks like: staying alert, recognizing our desperate need for a Savior, obeying quickly when God speaks, and returning changed because of an encounter with Jesus. The shepherds didn't just hear the good news—they moved with haste, shared what they had seen, and worshiped with transformed hearts. Their story reminds us that real men don't wait for perfect circumstances… they respond in obedience and lead with courage. How is God calling you to respond this Christmas?

In this deeply moving session, Christine supports Sheylee—a devoted mother who is pregnant with her seventh child and struggling under the weight of shame, overwhelm, and fear. After believing she was done having children, this unexpected pregnancy has stirred painful emotions, identity confusion, and unresolved relational patterns in her partnership. Christine helps her gently unravel the layers of guilt, inner criticism, and pressure she has carried for years. Together, they explore how to hold two truths at once: loving a child while not feeling joyful about the circumstances, being grateful and overwhelmed at the same time, and honoring both human emotion and spiritual perspective. If you've ever felt shame for how you feel, feared getting "stuck" in a hard season, or struggled to access compassion for yourself, this conversation offers relief, grounding, and a renewed sense of permission to be honest about your emotional reality.   Consider / Ask Yourself: Is there something in your life you believe you "should" feel happy about—but you don't? Do you fear that if you let yourself feel your emotions, you won't be able to stop? Do you often feel unsupported—emotionally, spiritually, or relationally? Are you harder on yourself than anyone else is? Do you hear an inner critic more loudly than your own compassion?   Key Insights and A-HAs: Shame about how you feel is often more damaging than the feelings themselves. It is possible—and healthy—to hold two truths at once ("both/and"). Emotional release is not falling apart; it's moving energy through the body. Many women confuse caretaking with connection or worthiness. Inner critics often come from childhood patterns of control, hypervigilance, or judgment. Spiritual support (God, Mother Mary, or a higher loving presence) can hold us when people cannot.   How to Deepen the Work: Practice the both/and: "I love this baby AND I am overwhelmed." Create space each day to sit with your feelings rather than suppress them. Replace harsh self-talk with compassion through simple practices like Ho'oponopono: I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you. Call on unseen spiritual support when human support feels unavailable. Identify where old survival strategies are still active—and begin updating them with gentler internal dialogue. Explore ways to communicate needs in your partnership with clarity rather than collapse.   Sponsor: Cured Nutrition – Flow Gummies Christine recommends Flow Gummies from Cured Nutrition for clean, sustained energy and focus throughout the day. Host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette/Daily Collegian Nittany Lions insider Isaiah Maldonado to react to Penn State's decision to keep interim coach Terry Smith on new head coach Matt Campbell's coaching staff following the latter's hiring over the weekend. This show is presented by FanDuel. Was keeping Smith the right call? Both in terms of healing wounds from James Franklin's firing with players? And with fans who've wanted to see Joe Paterno's legacy further centered in the program? Or could the move set the stage for future division inside and outside the program? Especially if and when Campbell hits a rough patch? And what should we make of Campbell's reported choice to bring Jon Heacock with him from Iowa State as defensive coordinator? Presumably displacing Jim Knowles and his expensive contract? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders the matchup with Clemson in the Pinstripe Bowl and the possible opt-outs of prominent names including Zane Durant, Dani Dennis-Sutton, Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton. In this heartfelt coaching session, Christine works with Jemma, who feels confused and heartbroken after believing that God led her into a relationship that ultimately ended in disappointment. Jemma wrestles with feelings of self-blame, loss, and spiritual doubt as she questions whether she misunderstood divine guidance—or was somehow being punished. Christine helps her see the situation through a lens of truth and compassion. Together, they explore how childhood wounds shape patterns of self-sacrifice, and how spiritual confusion often arises when we project human expectations onto God. Jemma learns that she hasn't "lost herself"—she was simply operating from childhood survival strategies, and she's now being invited to evolve through love, loss, and faith. If you've ever felt like the universe led you somewhere painful, this episode will help you find meaning, peace, and trust in a bigger plan. Consider / Ask Yourself: Have you ever felt misled by God or the universe? Do you blame yourself when relationships don't work out? Do you confuse caretaking or fawning with true connection? Are you interpreting disappointment as a sign you did something wrong? Key Insights and A-HAs: We often project human disappointment and abandonment onto God. "Losing yourself" is actually slipping back into old survival patterns. Every relationship can be a stepping stone toward deeper healing. Grief and progress can coexist—healing is not linear. Compassion for younger parts of ourselves softens relational patterns. How to Deepen the Work: Reflect on how childhood shaped your approach to intimacy and caretaking. Replace "I lost myself" with "I shifted into coping—and now I'm returning to myself." Journal about how this relationship moved you forward rather than backward. Spend time nurturing your inner child—the part of you longing for safety. Engage with God or your spiritual source as a loving presence, not a judge. The readings for this homily: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/120325.cfmAdvent invites us to wait—not passively, but with trust. As Fr. Tyler Mentzer reflects on Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want,” he reminds us that God's provision is never merely sufficient; it is abundant, verdant, and overflowing. In a world where we're tempted to grasp, control, or hurry, Advent teaches us to rest in the “fertile pastures” where the Good Shepherd gives us repose.Fr. Tyler shows how the Lord's generosity is revealed through Scripture: the prophecy of Isaiah, the miracles of Jesus, the multiplication of loaves, and the Eucharist—our “juicy, rich food” and “pure choice wine.” The Catechism teaches: “Hope is the confident expectation of divine blessing” (CCC 2090). Advent hope means trusting that God's timing is perfect, His providence lavish, and His guidance steady—even in the “dark valley.”Like Jesus in the desert and on the Cross, we are invited to wait on the Father rather than take matters into our own hands. The fruit of this waiting is abundance, courage, resurrection life, and the promise that we “shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”Watch the full homily on YouTube, DivineMercyPlus.org, the DM+ app, and wherever you get your podcasts.Deepen your Advent with exclusive Catholic content on the free, ad-free Divine Mercy Plus streaming platform. In this powerful coaching session, Christine supports Nina, a high-achieving woman who has learned to rely on herself since childhood—and now wonders why love feels so hard to receive. Despite years of healing and success, she finds herself attracting men who are kind but lack direction, and she struggles to understand whether her independence is strength or self-protection. Christine helps Nina uncover the difference between healthy masculine energy and overfunctioning rooted in trauma. Together, they explore how early loss and betrayal created hypervigilance, and how surrendering to trust—especially through a deeper spiritual relationship—can open the door to healthy, reciprocal love. If you've ever been told you're "too strong," or you find it easier to do everything yourself than to receive support, this episode will help you reframe that pattern with compassion and start allowing love in. Consider / Ask Yourself: Do you relate to overfunctioning or feeling like the one everyone relies on? Is receiving help or love uncomfortable for you? Do you believe you need to have everything handled to feel safe? Have you confused control with confidence or independence with strength? Key Insights and A-HAs: Overfunctioning is often a trauma response, not healthy masculine energy. When we've been hurt by men, we often project that hurt onto "the masculine" as a whole. Safety must come before surrender—your nervous system needs evidence that love can be safe. Healing happens in stages; each relationship can serve as a stepping stone toward healthy partnership. True surrender isn't weakness—it's a return to trust, faith, and divine alignment. How to Deepen the Work: Reflect on early memories that taught you to "handle it all" and what beliefs they created. Practice receiving in small, everyday ways (compliments, help, rest). Replace "I need to fix it" with "I'm open to support." Pray or journal: "God, help me align with my most loving and healthy match." Remember that trust—both spiritual and relational—is a muscle built over time. In this deeply supportive session, Christine coaches Kelly, who is learning to open her heart to healthy love after leaving a toxic marriage. Kelly recently met someone kind and emotionally available—but her nervous system keeps sending mixed signals, leaving her wondering whether it's intuition or fear. Christine helps her understand how the body stores memories of past trauma, how to distinguish real red flags from old triggers, and how to gently retrain the nervous system to feel safe in love again. Together, they explore what integration looks like after healing work—when awareness turns into embodiment. If you've ever questioned your body's signals, struggled to trust love again, or feared repeating old patterns, this conversation will bring deep clarity and compassion. Consider / Ask Yourself: Do you mistake fear for intuition—or intuition for fear? Have past painful relationships made it hard to feel safe in love? Are you waiting to be "fully healed" before allowing intimacy in? How do you respond when someone truly shows up for you? Key Insights and A-HAs: The nervous system often reacts to memories, not the present moment. Fear can mean danger—or it can mean expansion. Integration is the bridge between awareness and embodiment. Healing doesn't mean fear disappears; it means you relate to it differently. Safe love can still feel unfamiliar—and that's okay. How to Deepen the Work: Journal about how your body reacts when someone is kind, consistent, or loving. Write down red flags from past relationships to clarify what's truly unsafe. Practice "titration": letting love in slowly, without judgment. Notice when your nervous system feels unsettled and speak to it with compassion. Remind yourself: you can feel fear and stay open to love. Sponsor: Cured Nutrition Need more energy and focus without the crash?
