Disagreement, when approached constructively and respectfully, can foster better understanding, promote critical thinking, and lead to enhanced empathy and connection. When people stop avoiding hard conversations and plunge in to the risk of disagreement there is a deep richness to the more honest conversation.

Melanie used to regret marrying her husband and now she hates being away from him. The work she did in between is the answer to overcoming hard times. Many women have expectations for marriage that simply aren't realistic. You will go through hard times. You will feel disconnected. And if you have kids, you will be sleep deprived! But don't give up! There is a way to move through hard times that will bring you and your partner together and get you back on the same team.Hit play to hear Melanie's wisdom and advice - it will blow you away!Who is Melanie Shenberger?Melanie is a wife and mother of two little girls. She is also a coach specializing in home decluttering and shifting the mindset around the things in your home. Melanie grew up in constant chaos and clutter in her childhood home and it was an exact representation of her mind. When she got married young all that chaos followed her and started taking its toll on her marriage. After a very rocky start, Melanie was able to save her crumbling marriage but it wasn't until years later that she started getting to the root of why so many issues were present, to begin with. After experiencing the miscarriage of her second child, she realized that she needed a change. She was tired of the chaos that was her home and mind. She started down a journey of minimalism and began crafting a program to systematically remove not just the things from your home, but resolve the stories and emotions attached to them. After removing approximately 80% of her belongings from their home, she started realizing just how much all the "stuff" had contributed to her early marital issues.Melanie now coaches women on crafting the home and life that they want so they can enjoy every moment of motherhood, marriage, and themselves. If you'd like to connect with Melanie you can follow her on Instagram here or join her free Facebook groupFree Resources:Sex & Housework: How to Stop Avoiding BothFREE Masterclass: 5 Ways to Deepen the Connection with Your Partner21 Questions That Will Bring You and Your Partner Closer Than Ever!4-Step Guide To Self-Empowerment, Better Communication and Deeper Intimacy With Your PartnerIG: @partnershipalignedElana@partnershipaligned.comBook your free consult and start improving your relationship today!

Meghaan's passion lies in helping individuals become skilled communicators who can ask thoughtful questions that support and connect with others.  Through her work as a professor, she has witnessed the transformative power of asking questions in various settings, including personal relationships and financial planning. Meghaan emphasizes the importance of follow-up questions, which not only enhance understanding but also make individuals more likable. She also highlights the significance of phrasing questions in a way that promotes safety and avoids confrontations. By focusing on effective communication strategies, Meghaan aims to improve relationships and foster deeper connections among individuals. In this episode: Discover the small changes in communication style that can have a significant impact on your interactions. Enhance relationships and deepen understanding through the power of asking thoughtful questions. Utilize body language and posture to create a positive and receptive atmosphere for effective communication. Deepen connections and understanding by using techniques such as reflection, labeling, and scaling questions. Understand the importance of establishing a strong and safe relationship before offering advice or solutions. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, In this episode, Melina Palmer introduces Megaan Lurtz, a writer and senior research associate who specializes in the intersection of finance and psychology. Meghaan shares her expertise on communication skills and the challenges of discussing money. 00:04:06 - Why People Hate Talking About Money, Meghaan explains that money is a difficult topic to discuss due to the various emotions and judgments associated with it. People often feel shame or judgment when talking about their financial situation, making it a taboo subject. 00:06:09 - The Power of Scaling Questions, Scaling questions are a powerful tool for communication. Meghaan describes how scaling questions can be used to gauge someone's feelings or experiences on a scale of 1 to 10 and then follow up with why they didn't choose a lower number. This technique helps shift the focus to positive aspects and improves overall communication. 00:09:40 - The Impact of Follow-Up Questions, Meghaan shares a study conducted on speed daters, which found that the most significant factor in securing a second date was asking engaging follow-up questions. Follow-up questions that keep the conversation focused on the other person make individuals more likable and improve connections. 00:14:44 - The Importance of Listening, Active listening is crucial for effective communication. Meghaan emphasizes the importance of genuinely listening to others, without distractions or interruptions. 00:15:13 - The Power of Communication, The way we communicate can have a significant impact on how others respond to us. Small changes in our communication style can lead to either a positive or contentious response. Nonverbal cues, such as body language and posture, also play a crucial role in effective communication. 00:16:38 - Finding the Right Balance, Communication styles differ from person to person, and it's important to find the right balance that works for each individual. Experimenting and testing different approaches can help determine what feels comfortable and yields the best response. 00:18:41 - Asking Interesting Questions, The way we ask questions can make a significant difference in the depth of communication. Simple changes, like asking follow-up questions that reflect genuine interest, can lead to more meaningful and engaging conversations. 00:22:43 - Getting to the Deeper Meaning, Rather than sticking to surface-level facts, it's essential to delve deeper into the meaning and feelings behind people's responses. By asking reflective questions and exploring emotions, we can create stronger connections and foster better understanding. 00:26:18 - The Importance of Connection, Building strong connections is crucial in all relationships, whether personal or professional. Without a solid foundation and safe space for communication, advice and recommendations may not be effectively received or acted upon. Communication and connection go hand in hand. 00:30:22 - The Importance of Questions in Communication, Questions serve a purpose beyond just seeking answers. They can help create a more comfortable and open conversation, leading to deeper connections and understanding between people. 00:31:32 - The Power of Communication in Healing, Research has shown that individuals with positive relationships heal faster when faced with physical injuries. Good communication, expressing love and care, can make us superhuman and have a significant impact on our well-being. 00:34:00 - The Value of Teaching Communication Skills, Instead of focusing solely on academic subjects, teaching communication skills such as asking open-ended questions, reflective listening, and labeling can be more useful in improving relationships and changing lives. 00:36:02 - Effective Questioning Techniques, Mirroring, where you repeat back what the person said, and labeling, where you identify and reflect their emotions, are powerful questioning techniques that show genuine interest and encourage further conversation. 00:38:20 - The Impact of Questions on Energy and Focus, Questions can influence where people direct their attention and effort. By encouraging others to focus on positive aspects or different perspectives, we can help shift energy and improve relationships and outcomes. 00:45:04 -  Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. It is time to let go….let go of your fears…..let them go. You are safe. Prepare yourself for sleep. The intention of today's healing is to surrender and let go of what doesn't serve you. This may be a thought…a relationship or person. Allow yourself to drift off to sleep and when you awake feel a sense of wonder. I bless this space for healing, I call forth your Spirit, spirit guides and Angels. To help guide you and give you strength. Place any intentions in your heart and mind now….and so it is and so be it. Close your eyes…and take three deep breaths….. Relax your mind and body….. Release a little more with each breath…..feel how good it feels to breathe…..dropping down to the earth …. Notice how good it feels to be alive and in your skin… Notice any tension in your body, your neck, your lower back and shoulders….. Take another breath in at your chest and make it full and complete…… Now let the breath be natural…..and follow it in and out…… Moment by moment…. Notice the places of tension and angst…. where you are holding…gripping on to… A secret fear… that you have been abandoned, that life doesn't love you…PAUSE See how these fears do not serve you……. Let them go…… Acknowledge you feel weighed down……if even for this moment  Be carried now into the mystery of what awaits you…… The beauty on the other side of letting go……. Deepen the breath on the inhale….and exhale……surrender more….PAUSE You are holding on so tightly….your hands are in fists and jaw clenched….. Open and close your sweet mouth….open and close your palms…… Direct your attention to your palms…..make another fist…. Let all the tension drain out of you…as you slowly open your palms…. Like a tiny bird being released from your hands……..you feel the sense of aliveness… Energy courses through you….beginning at your crown and out your toes…… Feel the current… the current flow through you…. Lay your hands open to receive the joy and release……. This golden light saturates every aspect of who you are……reuniting you with your unique inner Spirit….. Feel the freedom of this release……… Like the bird who took flight……. You are free…..free…… Remind yourself of the serenity prayer…. “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change..courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”.....LONG PAUSE Sleep well my dear……sweet slumber…PAUSE You have let go of what doesn't serve you….. In this week's episode, Chief Victory Officer, Eric Guy, is once again joined by Alex Pursglove, Business and Transformation Coach. They discuss how to deepen your relationships by cultivating trust and acceptance of others.Takeaways:- Understanding vulnerability requires discerning what it is not.- Nourish the growth of your relationship by articulating your needs while graciously making room for your partner's desires.- The catalyst for change doesn't always require detailed descriptions; often, embodying the change itself is the most potent force.- Experiencing acceptance in our most vulnerable state from someone we love stands as one of life's most beautiful and fulfilling encounters.- Break free from people-pleasing by transforming your relationship with yourself. Authentic self-honesty paves the way for openness with those closest to you.- Gauge your partner's readiness by checking their capacity to engage with your thoughts: “On a scale of 1 to 10, how open are you to discussing this right now?”- Foster honesty and a non-judgmental atmosphere in your relationship by incorporating the phrase: “My preference is that we _______, and I'm open to your genuine feelings about this.”- Encouraging openness about desires invites a judgment-free space for genuine honesty.- Shift from personalizing your feelings to framing them as the narrative you're experiencing when communicating about emotions.Quotes:- “To trust another person, you need to start with trusting yourself.”- “Address the problem as US against the issue, instead of YOU being the issue.”- “When you remove judgement, your left with acceptance.”MAKE THIS YOUR BEST DAY YET!

We all have fears. But certain fears REALLY keep you stuck. Some common ones are fear of rejection, fear of being let down, and fear of conflict. Having these fears is not the problem. It's when you make decisions based on those fears that you become disconnected from your partner. Many times, I find that the unhealthy dynamic in a relationship can be traced back to a specific, root fear. By gaining awareness over fear, naming it, and getting coached on it - you finally fix the wound as opposed to slapping on a bandaid. #183 Meditation: The Complete Guide to Unlocking Its Life-Changing Benefits with Dr. Doni

How Humans Heal

In today's episode, we're going to fully explore the profound practice of meditation. I'll explain what meditation is, the vast scientific research validating its benefits, and provide an in-depth guide to incorporating meditation into your daily self-care routine. Regular meditation practice has been shown to reduce stress, increase happiness, improve health, and transform one's life in countless positive ways. By learning to quiet the mind and be present, you can tap into this amazing mind-body medicine free of charge. So let's dive deep into the what, why, and how of meditation! What is Meditation? Let's start with the basics – what is meditation? Meditation is the practice of focusing your attention completely on the present moment in order to settle and calm the mind. It falls under the larger umbrella of mindfulness, which involves maintaining awareness of your experience in the here and now. With meditation, the goal is to clear your mind from its usual frantic pace of thoughts about the past and future so you can be fully present. This creates mental space to process emotions, access deeper parts of yourself, and become more attuned with your mind and body. On a biological level, meditation induces shifts in your brain waves from the activated beta waves of normal waking life to slower alpha and theta brain wave patterns. Alpha waves are the bridge between conscious focus and deep relaxation where you are awake but very calm and centered. Theta waves tap into the subconscious mind and are restorative for the nervous system. Other brain frequencies like delta and gamma may also arise during deep meditation. Being able to move your brain waves between these different states gives you greater control over your state of consciousness. The more you meditate, the easier it becomes to access a meditative state of mindfulness as you go about your day. The Science Validating the Benefits of Meditation Now that you understand the state of being meditation facilitates, let's explore the vast scientific research revealing its profound benefits for both mental and physical health. Study after study continues to show that meditation dramatically improves wellbeing on multiple fronts. First, meditation has been proven to enhance mental health in significant ways: · It effectively reduces anxiety and lifts mood. Meditation calms the nervous system and has been shown to be as effective as medication and therapy for treating anxiety and depression. · It substantially decreases stress levels by lowering inflammatory stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Meditation returns the nervous system to a balanced, relaxed parasympathetic state to counteract chronic stress. · It elevates focus, concentration and attention span by producing increased alpha and theta brain waves that optimize cognitive function. Meditators often describe developing a “laser focus” from practice. · It builds emotional intelligence by helping you observe emotions as transient events in the mind, increasing emotional regulation and EQ. · It also enhances working memory and increases gray matter volume in brain areas related to cognitive function like the hippocampus and frontal cortex. Additionally, research has revealed powerful benefits of meditation for physical health: · It lowers blood pressure by dilating blood vessels through soothing the nervous system, enhancing healthy circulation. · It reduces heart rate by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, improving heart rate variability and vagal tone. · It decreases systemic inflammation by lowering inflammatory stress hormones and chemicals, helping resolve inflammatory conditions. · It bolsters the immune system by increasing natural killer cells, neutrophils, T-cells, and anti-viral proteins that fight infections. · It promotes deeper, more restorative sleep by facilitating falling asleep and staying asleep, and increasing regenerative slow wave and REM sleep. · It supports healthy longevity by boosting telomerase, an enzyme that repairs and lengthens telomeres – the protective caps on chromosomes that regulate aging. · It effectively manages both acute and chronic pain, with meditators requiring less pain medication due to altered pain perception. Furthermore, the combination of relieving mental stress and resolving physical inflammation means meditation can help reverse challenging chronic health conditions including: heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disorders, GI issues, chronic pain, depression, neurodegenerative diseases, and more. For any illness related to chronic stress, inflammation or mind-body imbalance, meditation can be a crucial part of effective treatment and prevention. Given the wide-ranging benefits of meditation for optimizing mental, emotional and physical health, it's no surprise research also shows it can significantly increase lifespan. By reducing causes of mortality like heart disease, hypertension, inflammation and stress, studies report meditators have on average a 29% lower risk of early death compared to non-meditators. The deep rest, anti-aging effects and protective benefits of meditation lead to longer, healthier lives. When you take into account the full breadth of research, the evidence for meditation is simply overwhelming. This free, accessible mind-body practice has the power to profoundly enhance your relationships, work performance, physical vigor, emotional balance, mental clarity, stress levels, and overall wellbeing. It's one of the most impactful health habits you can cultivate. How to Start a Meditation Practice Now that you understand the incredible science-backed benefits, let's turn to how you can start experiencing these transformative results yourself through a regular meditation practice. Here are my top tips: First, get clear on your intention - why do you want to start meditating? What are your goals? Do you want to reduce anxiety, sleep better, gain inner peace, improve concentration, resolve a health condition, or something else? Setting a focused intention will motivate you to persist. Next, establish a consistent practice time that fits your daily routine – first thing in the morning and in the evening before bed are popular choices. Decide when meditation will work best for you. Block out time in your calendar and treat this window as non-negotiable to build the habit. Create a designated meditation space in your home that is quiet and tranquil. Light candles, play relaxing music, or use other cues to trigger a calm mindset when entering your practice area. Sit in the same spot daily. Get as physically comfortable as possible. Sit cross-legged, kneel on a cushion, sit in a chair, or lie down – whatever allows your back to be straight while relaxing any tension. Adjust positions whenever needed during practice. Start with breathwork for a few minutes before transitioning into formal meditation. Take long, slow deep breaths focusing on the sensation of inhaling and exhaling to activate relaxation responses. Bring your full attention to your chosen object of focus – either your breath or a repeated mantra. Return your focus gently whenever the mind wanders. Observe thoughts non-judgmentally, letting them pass by without engaging. Set a timer for your desired practice length when starting out, even if just 5-10 minutes. Slowly build up your meditation time to 20, 30 minutes or longer. End slowly by reconnecting to your body and environment. Jot insights and reflections down in a meditation journal after each session. Review regularly to see your progress and optimize your practice as needed. Be patient with challenges - difficulties are normal and will pass. Additionally, explore different types of meditation to find the styles you most enjoy such as walking, movement, chanting, visualization, loving-kindness, or chakra meditations. Take classes, read books, listen to talks, and attend retreats to continually deepen your knowledge and experience. The key is to make meditation a daily ritual just like brushing your teeth. Regular practice is what delivers the immense mental, emotional and physical transformations, even if some days feel more connected than others. With patience and persistence, you'll be amazed at the positive life changes that unfold. Starting and Sustaining an Effective Meditation Routine To set your meditation practice up for ongoing success, here are some additional pro tips: Sit daily – Make meditation non-negotiable by practicing at the same time every day, just like brushing your teeth when you wake up and before bed. Skipping days makes it harder to stick to the routine. Start small – Don't be intimidated by sitting to meditate for 30+ minutes if you're new to it. Even just 5-10 minutes daily provides immense benefits. Slowly increase your practice time. Be consistent – Sit at the same time and in the same space daily to establish your ritual. Moving your meditation time around makes it harder to sustain consistency. Use guided meditations – If your mind has trouble settling, use an app, audio or video guide to walk you into a calm state until you can enter it directly. Attend retreats – Deepen your practice exponentially by attending weekend or multi-day intensive meditation retreats offered widely. Immersing yourself accelerates progress. Find community – Join local in-person meditation groups or online communities to gain inspiration, accountability and support on your journey. Read books – Dive into the many excellent books on meditation to troubleshoot obstacles, deepen understanding and augment motivation. Keep learning – Take classes, workshops and trainings from experienced teachers to evolve your practice and comprehension of meditation. Apply mindfulness – Bring meditative presence into everyday activities like eating, exercising, working and conversing to integrate mindfulness into living. Be patient – Remember that taming your mind's tendencies takes time and patience. Persist through difficulties calmly without self-judgment. Trust the process – Know that inner transformation happens subtly over time with regular practice. Don't get discouraged early on. Trust the process. By embracing meditation as an indispensable part of your self-care routine – just like adequate sleep, nutrition and exercise – you'll be amazed at the positive changes that unfold in your mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. Let's get personal. In the therapy world, sometimes we think that we want a CBT therapist, a psychodynamic therapist, a DBT therapist, or whatever other type of therapist when ultimately, we may not necessarily know what any of that means or if it's what we really need. We want to be able to “fit” into a box and have a specific type of therapy that we can lean into. In reality, it's not black and white at all and therapy most certainly doesn't fit into boxes. I want to preface this entire episode with the fact this is me reflecting on my own personal and professional experience. So disagree away with me.  Tweetable Quotes "Just because somebody says this is evidence-based, it is a lot more complicated than that." - Rachelle Heinemann "As a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, we do not shy away from anything uncomfortable. And that is what separates this from the rest." - Rachelle Heinemann “It's not like you can go for a brain imaging test, and go in and say, ‘Oh, yes, I do have an eating disorder' or ‘yes, I do have general anxiety.' It doesn't work that way." - Rachelle Heinemann "It requires knowing the theory behind how the human mind works, the development of psychology, and all of that stuff in order to integrate that into a therapy session that might almost look identical to somebody who hasn't had the training but just sort of tries to wing it." - Rachelle Heinemann LEAVE A REVIEW + help someone who may need this podcast by sharing this episode. WITH LOVE, DANIELLE
4 ways to deepen your Faith

Hello Loves… I can be having a conversation about a friend's dating life, or what we're having for dinner and in the back of my heart-mind, I'm thinking about Israeli and Palestinian families. Guilt can accompany some of my daily happinesses… I'm planning a wedding while there's a war. I pray more fiercely. I'm more tired than I should be. Whatever “should be” means in dark times like these. I think about FAITH––what do we put Faith in when there's atrocity? Or when our personal life is so challenging that we can't even think about what's happening outside of ourselves? And what should we be letting go of so that we can be more graceful in all the fractiousness? I am always wondering, What should I RENUNCIATE?  Faith and renunciation are loaded words for some of us, and these are charged concepts in times like these. So… let's go there. WITH LOVE, DANIELLE, Eps #87 is a fresh round of spiritual definitions in under 30 minutes: Embodiment. A consistency in thoughts, speech and action. Faith. Knowing that the light exists, even when it's dark.  Renunciation. Letting go of meaningless pursuits and things, that block your connection to your purpose.  The Lower Self and the Higher Self: the unhealed self (aka ego) and the Soul… your True Nature. Remember: Your Soul is always calling the shots. Lean in to it. With Love, D Mentioned in this episode:  Check out my Spiritual Essentials course on Commune to do a self-help audit and lighten your load! Welcome to season 4 of the Art Career. We start the season on a beautiful fall day in a kitchen in NYC's Chinatown. Before we sit down for our interview, artist Mathew Tully Dugan cooks the most delicious small plate for my editor Ben and myself; Thomas Keller's potato pavé with whipped roasted bone marrow, salt cured egg yolk, hackleback caviar and wasabi microgreens. A most delicious way to launch Season 4!  Matthew Tully Dugan (b. 1986) Rochester, NY born and NYC based multidisciplinary artist. Dugan's interests span celebrity, psychology, pop iconography, privacy, and fanaticism. Dugan often employs promotional, social, and found imagery in a practice motivated by digital media's physical and emotional divide. His paintings, sculptures, installations, texts, and curatorial projects collapse the popular and the subcultural, the collective and the personal, as a means of processing contemporary conditions and their impact on the psyche. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Will Shott, NY (2023), 56 Henry, New York (2022), Loveclub, NY (2021), Fierman, New York, NY (2018) as well as a public works in collaboration with Half Gallery, NY (2023). Dugan also runs a curatorial program, Art Death with yearly exhibitions in Miami Beach. Tully's upcoming exhibition, "Inferno", will open at Lomex's new Walker Street project space this Halloween.  It will be up until November 5th. theartcareer.com Matthew Tully Dugan: @TULLYdeluxe  Follow us: @theartcareer Podcast host: @emilymcelwreath_art Music: Chase Johnson Editing: @benjamin.galloway We are proud to be supported by The New York Studio School. Founded in 1964 as an intensive studio arts program with an emphasis on perception, artists learning from artists, and drawing as the most direct means of describing one's ideas or experiences, the Studio School offers an array of full-time and part-time programs that prioritize small classes and individual guidance from dedicated instructors distinguished in their fields. God is faithful to keep his promises, save and deliver his people, and prove that he has no rivals. The Problem: God uses trials & tests to DEEPEN and REFINE our trust in Him. The Answer: In the midst of a trial, trust in Jesus the Rock, who will keep you lifted up. “Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord.” (Exodus 14:31) “Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter. and the people grumbled against Moses.” (Exodus 15:22) "The whole congregation of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. Saying “would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill us with hunger.” (Exodus 16:2) “Do not fear, for God has come to test you so that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.” (Exodus 20:20) “In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. " (1 Peter 1:6-7) "all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.” (1 Corinthians 10:4)
