This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes take a look at "Confess, Fletch", the 2022 comedy mystery starring Jon Hamm as investigative reporter and perpetual troublemaker Irwin M. Fletcher.Both Mike Butler and Mike Field find plenty to like here. Jon Hamm makes Fletch his own, bringing an easygoing charm and dry comedic delivery to the character, while the supporting cast gives him plenty of strange personalities to bounce off of. The mystery moves along nicely, the jokes land, and the entire film has an effortlessly pleasant quality that makes it an easy watch."Confess, Fletch" certainly isn't reinventing either the comedy or mystery genre, but it doesn't really need to. It's funny, charming, inoffensive entertainment that knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be and delivers a solid version of it.The Mikes also discuss why a film like this struggled to find an audience in 2022. Between a theatrical marketplace still recovering from the pandemic, its simultaneous availability at home, and a cast that may not have pulled in younger moviegoers, "Confess, Fletch" never got much of a chance to build momentum.That's especially unfortunate because Hamm proves to be a great fit for Fletch, and both Butler and Field would have happily watched him solve a few more mysteries. Some things seem to never go away, even if we try to forget about them. You can ask a Chinese man named Deng who is 67 years old and was recently hospitalized with excruciating abdominal pain. Thirty years earlier, he had swallowed a cigarette lighter when he was drinking and took a dare. His mistake is still plaguing him 30 years later. He underwent a gastroscopy to find the source of the pain and the doctors saw it. It was actually a blackened object that had been corroded by stomach acid. To their amazement, when they retrieved it, the lighter still worked. Deng said that he had tried to forget all about it. He didn't expect it to stay that long. When you do something wrong, it will show up later with bad consequences. Confess, receive God's forgiveness, and you can have a different future.

He is looking for excuses to be good to us." This episode works through Psalm 34:8 and its invitation to taste and see that the Lord is good. The idea is simple but easy to lose hold of: God is good, and he wants to be good to you personally. Most of us can agree that God has been good to others while quietly assuming we are the exception. This teaching sets out to remove that doubt for good. Building from Romans 5 and Ephesians 2, the case is made that the clearest evidence of God's goodness is already settled. Christ died for us while we were still opposed to God, which means the goodness was never earned and never can be. It is given freely. From there the episode moves through Psalm 139, Jeremiah 29 and Isaiah 46 to show how constantly God thinks about us and how he intends to carry us from beginning to end, through every stage and every kind of trouble. The closing section is practical. Mistakes and failures do not cancel God's goodness, and the way back is repentance, not self punishment. The response God asks for is thanks and praise, poured out in prayer and shared openly with others. Confidence in God's goodness makes the whole walk lighter, calmer and far more free from worry. Dave's summer vacation got cut from three months down to two, and Adam has a theory. New baby, plus he hasn't been working near as hard. And if you deliberately hold a mortal sin back, the confession is invalid and you've just added to the pile. Compound interest is powerful. Compound sin is worse.Receive the Eucharist at least during the Easter season. Observe the days of fasting and abstinence, which used to be far heavier, and nothing is stopping you from going heavier now. Adam has never once enjoyed fasting. Dave eats nothing until dinner and swears he thinks more clearly for it. Both of them fast every Wednesday with a group of men and offer it up for their wives and their families. That's the domestic priesthood doing what it's for.And help provide for the needs of the Church. Notice it doesn't say if you can afford it. Money is the easy part. Time is the sacrifice, especially in the seasons of fatherhood when there isn't any. Fr. Brian O'Brien's answer when somebody says the church really ought to do this: "I totally agree. You should do it." Your kids need to see you make some of your time sacred, not because nothing else was asking for it, but because you told everything else no.It all lands on stewardship. You don't owe God 10%. You owe Him 100%. The house, the money, the hours, and most of all the kids were never yours, and He's going to want all of it back. Adam is honest about where that gets hard: leaving work drained, walking in the door, wanting to shut down instead of engage. The fix isn't willpower. It's routine. A liturgy of the home. Because those minutes belong to Him too, and at judgment there won't be a single moment that goes unjudged.One housekeeping note. Together We Confess | James 5 by Christ Covenant

Four years of leading a small group at a local church, watching people grow slowly and beautifully in the Lord through a simple but powerful weekly rhythm: fellowship, discussion, mutual ministry, and fellowship again. The mutual ministry portion is where something remarkable consistently happens. Men and women separate, go deeper than surface-level conversation, and do the vulnerable, necessary work of getting to the root of sin in their hearts. Week after week, confession before trusted brothers and sisters loosens sin's grip and strengthens the bonds of community in ways that nothing else quite does. James 5:16 is direct and practical: confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. Sin wounds the heart and makes us grow callous toward God, choosing our own ways over His. But confession — simply saying what God says about our sin and owning it before Him and others — brings the darkness into the light where it can no longer hold us. The grip loosens. Fellowship with the Father deepens. And the vulnerability required to confess sin among fellow believers does something unexpected: it unites. When we see that none of us is perfect, that we all fall short of God's glory, our relationships move from surface-level to heart-level in the places that actually matter. We are clothed in Christ's righteousness, which means God hears our cries and receives them. And with that confidence, we can approach the throne of grace and ask for the strength to bring what is hidden into the light, where real change and real healing begin. Today's Bible Verse "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working."— James 5:16, ESV Ponder Today Confession brings darkness into the light where it can no longer hold us. Sin thrives in hiddenness. When we name it before God and trusted others, the grip it has on our hearts genuinely loosens and healing can begin. Confessing sin to one another is a biblical command, not an optional spiritual extra. James 5:16 is clear and direct. Community accountability is part of how God designed sanctification to work in the life of a believer. Vulnerability in confession unites rather than divides. When we see that none of us is perfect and that we all fall short of God's glory, our relationships deepen beyond surface level into the heart-level conversations that produce real change. The prayer of a righteous person has great power — and that righteousness is Christ's, not ours. We do not have to achieve a certain level of spiritual performance before our prayers are received. In Christ, we are already clothed in His righteousness, and God hears us. Ask God for the strength to be vulnerable. Confession requires courage that we often do not have on our own. He is faithful to give it when we ask, and He is worth the risk of letting others see what we have been trying to hide. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, even though on this side of heaven I will never be sinless, You do want me to flee from sin. When I give in to temptation and rebel against Your ways, I am tempted to run and hide from You, just as Adam and Eve did. I need Your strength to push past that desire to hide. I want any darkness to come to the light. I want to truly repent and see freedom from the grip of sin in my life. Help me to see the gift of accountability and love from my brothers and sisters in Christ, and give me the strength to be vulnerable and honest with You and with those You have placed around me. I long to be an encouragement to others who are struggling and to point them to the cross where Jesus bore our sin. Thank You for conforming me to look more like Christ day by day. What must I do to be saved? That question is the subject of much debate and much confusion as you might expect. But in our lesson today Paul answers that questionwith plain, unmistakable clarity. He says, "...if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." There's nothing confusing in that statement. A child can understand it, and anyone can do it. He's telling us that God has already done all the work. He has provided everything we need for salvation and now requires of us only that we confess and believe, assuring us that if we do we will most certainly be saved. So why is that so hard for so many people? All the work has been done, and the response required of us is easily understood and quite doable, yet something inside the human heart still wrestles against it. Apparently, being saved is easy, but getting the human heart to take those steps is not. Confessing a Lord requires humility, a quality not initially present in most of us. And believing in a resurrected Savior means acknowledging my own desperate need and accepting as fact the most profound miracle imaginable. So the steps I need to take are simple, but preparing my heart to take them is not. Paul isn't offering us mere words to recite here. Salvation doesn't come from a superficial prayer. He's inviting us to make two deep heartfelt decisions... and to continue in those decisions for a lifetime: To confess Jesus as our Lord and to live out the implications of that confession, and to cling to Him as our risen Savior, trusting that He forgives us and is our righteousness no matter what condemnation and shame try to come our way.
