חברת רפאל השלימה לאחרונה סדרת ניסויים ראשונה במערכת ׳מעיל רוח׳ (טרופי) ששולבה בטנק לאופרד 2 של צבא גרמניה. משרדי הבטיחון של גרמניה וישראל חתמו על הסכם לאינטגרציה ורכש מערכות הגנה אקטיבית לטנקים הגרמנים, והניסוי המוצלח מהווה שלב חשוב בעסקה, שבמסגרתה תצויד פלוגת שריון ראשונה במערכת הישראלית. בשיחתנו נדון בהיבטים השונים של שילוב הגנה אקטיבית ברכב קרבי משוריין ובפוטנציאל למכירת מערכות כאלה למדינות אחרות.

משרד הביטחון הודיע היום על תחילת ניסויי הטסה של בלון מכ״ם ענק המוצב בצפון הארץ ומיועד לשפר את הגנת ישראל מפני תקיפות מעומק שטחי אויב. המכ״ם שירחף בגובה רב, במשימות ארוכות ובכל תנאי מזג אוויר יאפשר לישראל להרחיב ולהעמיק את מערכת ההתראה שלה, מפני איומים מוכרים וחדשים.

בשנים האחרונות טורקיה הגדילה באופן משמעותי את היקף ההצטידות הצבאית כשהיא מתבססת בעיקר על רכש מהתעשיות הביטחוניות המקומיות. טורקיה מייצרת כיום כמעט את כל מערכות הלחימה שהיא רוכשת, מספינות קרב, טנקים, תותחים, וטילים, ועד מל״טים. רק בתחום האווירי טורקיה עדיין לא התקדמה והיא מסתמכת על יבוא ממדינות זרות. כיום, כשטורקיה פונה מזרחה בנסיונה לגוון את מקורות הרכש הביטחוני, היא ניצבת בפני לחצים כבירים שמאיימים על מעמדה המיוחד בברית עם אירופה ומדינות המערב.

סיור נוכחות של מפציץ אמריקאי בשמי המזה״ת נתן ביטוי להעמקת שיתוף הפעולה בין פיקוד המרכז האמריקאי למדינות באזור. לגיחה, שיצאה מלב האוקיינוס ההודי, במרחק אלפי מקילומטרים, הצטרפו מטוסים סעודיים, מצרים, ישראלים ובחרינים. הגיחה תוכננה זמן רב מראש וחייבה תאום בין כל חילות האויר שנטלו בה חלק. המשימה מצטרפת לפעילות אמריקאית אינטנסיבית שמתנהלת באזורנו, באוויר, בים וביבשה, זאת לצד פינוי מדורג של כוחות צבאיים מעירק וסוריה.

חיל האוויר המצרי ממשיך להתעצם, לאחרונה פורסם הסכם עם צרפת לרכישת 30 מטוסי קרב מסוג רפאל, מהדגם החדיש ביותר, זאת כחלק ממגמה להביא את סדר הכוחות למאה מטוסים מסוג זה, ישופעלו לצד מטוסי אף 16 מתוצרת ארה״ב ומיג-29 רוסיים. הבחירה המצרית מהווה חלק ממדיניותה לבזר את ספקי הנשק שלה. על הרקע לרכש המצרי בפודקאסט זה.

Iran is intensifying drone attacks in the region, directed against rival forces including the US, Saudi, and Emiratis as well as at civilian ships in the Gulf. Most targets are still unprotected and suffer significant damage and sometimes casualties under such attacks. Aware of the risk of UAS and loitering weapons for many years, Israel has developed effective countermeasures which are now being considered by its allies in the region.

The US Army is deploying one of the new Iron Dome batteries to Guam, to be tested as part of the Island's defense against cruise missiles. This deployment is far away from the hot spots in Syria and Iraq, where US forces suffer repeated attacks and could use Iron Dome's combat-proven capabilities to defeat missiles and drone attacks.

Israel Aerospace Industries has won a tender to supply a fire control system that will transform obsolete anti-aircraft artillery into modern, effective and potent air defense assets. IAI has won the international tender against competition from leading international bidders, offering the Sky Capture system for $550 million. The customer was not named but is likely the Indian Army.

The US Army has developed a self-propelled variant of the XM-907 155mm 58 Caliber cannon. Defense-Update reports. https://defense-update.com/20181014_erca.htm an M-109A8 variant based on this enhanced design is expected to be fielded by 2023 and provide the US Army with cannon artillery firepower that could reach targets 70 km with high precision. Eventually, the Army hopes that with enhanced ammunition those guns could reach targets at 100 km. This is not the final goal, the Army also plans to test a strategic cannon that will be able to fire projectiles as far as a thousand kilometers away.

DARPA calls for proposals to study tools to enable soldiers to operate and control swarms of up to 250 collaborating bots. Such swarms will be able to support soldiers fighting in an urban area, providing critical situational awareness, understanding, and decision making.

The IDF is evaluating a new configuration of the Iron-Fist lightweight active protection systems (APS) for the protection of medium wheeled vehicles such as the 8x8 Eitan Armored Personnel Carrier and tactical trucks. The system is also considered for the protection of heavy bulldozers.

Rafael completed recently a successful test series of a Trophy Active Protection System (APS) redesigned to shed some 40 percent of the weight of the original system designed for heavy armored vehicles and main battle tanks. Through more than 300 test firings Trophy succeeded to neutralize more than 280 of the shots that included various types of anti-tank rockets (RPG) and guided missiles (ATGM).

General Dynamics Land Systems unveiled today the latest configuration of its Griffin armored fighting vehicle addressing the U.S. Army’s latest requirements for combat maneuverability and firepower. The new robotic engineering scout is a member of IAI's Sahar family of route clearing and counter-IED robots. The original Sahar (shown in the video below) was based on a Bobcat commercial off the shelf (COTS) vehicle and implemented various sensors and tools to operate autonomously on most tasks. The new version utilizes IAI's 6x6 Robattle platform, a rugged platform specially designed for robotic missions.

The Raytheon Company and Swedish aerospace and defense firm Saab are developing a guided munition for the Carl-Gustaf man-portable, shoulder-launched weapon system under a U.S. Army contract. Under the contract, the team will provide all-up-rounds for three test firings against threat-representative targets. Test firing of the guided Carl-Gustaf munition is planned for 2020 in Sweden. In 2017, Raytheon announced its partnership with Saab to develop new weapons for infantry forces.
