50 Years Ago, Chuck Colson Was Granted Eternal Life

The BreakPoint Podcast

Fifty years ago this week, Charles W. Colson became a follower of Jesus Christ. Chuck would subsequently become one of the most respected evangelical leaders of the 20th and early 21st centuries, founding both Prison Fellowship Ministries and the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, and authoring bestselling books such as Born Again, How Now Shall We Live?, and Loving God.   Chuck Colson's influence came about because of how deeply and thoroughly Jesus Christ changed his life. Certainly, he was an incredibly gifted person (after all, not everyone lands in a White House office as special counsel to the President of the United States in their thirties!). Yet, Chuck's giftedness before he found faith was corrupted by pride, which led to an incredible public fall.  On the thirtieth anniversary of his conversion, Chuck Colson described it in detail. Here, in his own voice, is Chuck Colson:  "Thirty years ago today, I visited Tom Phillips, president of the Raytheon Company, at his home outside of Boston. I had represented Raytheon before going to the White House, and I was about to start again.  But I visited him for another reason as well. I knew Tom had become a Christian, and he seemed so different. I wanted to ask him what had happened.  That night, he read to me from Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, particularly a chapter about the great sin that is pride. A proud man is always walking through life looking down on other people and other things, said Lewis. As a result, he cannot see something above himself immeasurably superior—God.  Tom, that night, told me about encountering Christ in his own life. He didn't realize it, but I was in the depths of deep despair over Watergate, watching the President I had helped for four years flounder in office. I had also heard that I might become a target of the investigation as well. In short, my world was collapsing.  That night, as Tom was telling me about Jesus, I listened attentively but didn't let on about my need. When he offered to pray, I thanked him but said, no, I would see him sometime after I had read C.S. Lewis's book. But when I got in the car that night, I couldn't drive it out of the driveway. Ex-Marine captain, White House tough guy, I was crying too hard, calling out to God. I didn't know what to say: I just knew I needed Jesus, and He came into my life.  That was thirty years ago.  I've been reflecting of late on the things God has done over that time. As I think about my life, the beginning of the prison ministry, our work in the justice area, our international ministry that reaches one hundred countries, and the work of the Wilberforce Forum and Breakpoint, I have come to appreciate the doctrine of providence. It's not the world's idea of fate or luck, but the reality of God's divine intervention. He orchestrates the lives of His children to accomplish His good purposes.  God has certainly ordered my steps. I couldn't have imagined when I was in prison that I would someday go back to the White House with ex-offenders as I did on June 18—or that we would be running prisons that have an 8% recidivism rate—or that Breakpoint would be heard daily on a thousand radio outlets across the United States and on the internet.  The truth that is uppermost in my mind today is that God isn't finished. As long as we're alive, He's at work in our lives. We can live lives of obedience in any field because God providentially arranges the circumstances of our lives to achieve His objectives.  And that leads to the greatest joy I've found in life. As I look back on my life, it's not having been to Buckingham Palace to receive the Templeton Prize or getting honorary degrees or writing books. The greatest joy is to see how God has used my life to touch the lives of others, people hurting and in need.  It has been a long time since the dark days of Watergate. I'm still astounded that God would take someone who was infamous in the Watergate scandal, and soon to be a convicted felon, and take him into His family and then order his steps in the way He has with me. God touched me at that moment in Tom Phillip's driveway, and thirty years later, His love and kindness touch and astound me still."  Chuck Colson's life and legacy continues to be a testimony to God's amazing grace.   For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.

If you want to start a heated debate, pretty much anywhere in the Western world today, just bring up the topic of immigration. While there are plenty of policy issues that drive partisanship today, few are as sticky as the immigration issue. From the arguments of protecting the border and rule of law, to the need to protect immigrant rights and the dynamism that comes with welcoming legal immigrant, there are plenty of ideas, issues, and challenges to work on and argue about. In today's episode, we talk with Dr. James Hollifield, Professor and Director of the Tower Center for Public Policy and International Affairs at Southern Methodist University, about why the United States and the European Union have grappled with immigration for so long. The challenge stems from what he identifies as the "Liberal Paradox", where states need to define borders, citizenship, and rule of law, with the need to respect human rights, uphold values, and welcome new labor. Join us as we take a look at the history of immigration in the U.S. and what these countries can do to solve this issue. James F. Hollifield is the Ora Nixon Arnold Fellow in International Political Economy, Professor in the Department of Political Science, and Director of the Tower Center at SMU in Dallas, Texas, as well as a member of the New York Council on Foreign Relations and a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington, DC.Hollifield has served as an Advisor to various governments in North and South America, Europe, East Asia and the Middle East and Africa, as well as the United Nations, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the OECD, the ILO, the IOM, the EU, and other international organizations.  He currently chairs working groups at the World Bank and the IDB and serves on the International Advisory Board of the National Center for Competence in Research (NCCR for Migration and Mobility) of the Swiss National Science Foundation.   He has been the recipient of grants from private corporations and foundations as well as government agencies, including the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Social Science Research Council, the Sloan Foundation, the Owens Foundation, the Raytheon Company, and the National Science Foundation. His major books include Immigrants, Markets and States (Harvard), L'Immigration et l'Etat Nation: à la recherche d'un modèle national (L'Harmattan), Pathways to Democracy: The Political Economy of Democratic Transitions (with Calvin Jillson, Routledge), Migration, Trade and Development (with Pia Orrenius and Thomas Osang, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas), Herausforderung Migration—Perspektiven der vergleichenden Politikwissenschaft (with Uwe Hunger, Lit Verlag), Migration Theory (with Caroline Brettell, Routledge, now it its third edition), and Controlling Immigration ( with Philip Martin and Pia Orrenius, Stanford, also in its third edition). Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, James "Lou" Gorman was an American baseball executive, and the former general manager of the Seattle Mariners and Boston Red Sox? He spent more than three decades in baseball operations, as a general manager, assistant GM, farm system director or scouting director, and at the time of his death he was the Red Sox' executive consultant for public affairs with an emphasis on community projects. He also was the coordinator of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, to which he was inducted in 2002. Now, for our feature story: Westerly High's football team really didn't have a signature win on its mantle heading into Friday night's Division II contest with Barrington last week. Now, it does. Westerly used an opportunistic defense and the running of junior Zack Tuck to shut out the Eagles, 28-0, at Augeri Field, clinching a spot in the D-II playoffs. Barrington came into the game atop Division II-A with a 4-1 league mark. The Eagles were 5-1 overall. Westerly coach Stanley Dunbar said: "Barrington is a good team. When you watch them on film, they are probably the hardest-playing team I've seen," "They fly around and play with great effort. Our kids bounced back from last week's loss (27-20 to Classical). They played their hearts out today." Westerly's first three league wins came against teams that are a combined 4-10. Tuck scored touchdowns on runs of 3, 5 and 55 yards. He finished with 230 yards on 26 carries and surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the year. It was his third 200-plus rushing performance of the season. He now has 1,047 yards with 13 rushing touchdowns. "It was a perfect night. We wanted it and we needed it," Tuck said. "We knew we could beat these guys. They are a hard-nosed football team. But we wanted to set the tone tonight for the rest of the season." Dunbar said it was the best win of the season for the Bulldogs. "I think we are getting better. Classical is a good football team and we played them tough and could have won the game," Dunbar said. "The boys just came out tonight, stepped it up and brought it home." For more information on all things Westerly and Rhode Island, check out this story and more at thewesterlysun.com Are you interested in a new opportunity? You're in luck! Today's Job posting comes from Randall Realtors Compass in Westerly. They're looking for real estate agents. You'll need to obtain a real estate license before you start. Pay can be $100,000 or more per year. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/jobs?l=Westerly%2C%20RI&mna=5&aceid&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpf2IBhDkARIsAGVo0D2S3gEb-328GyRpBuTTeeKPdn3-klOh0KYAsfete6MEZmI5S4qTg-4aAnQkEALw_wcB&vjk=ca280a731c2da875&advn=7652287743140876 Today we're remembering the life of Scott Erik Dupré.  Scott was born in 1953 and raised in Jamestown. He attended elementary school there, and then in 1971 graduated from Rogers High School in Newport. Scott pursued his love of the outdoors by earning a degree in Forest Management at Paul Smith's College and graduated from The Rhode Island School of Electronics, helping him secure a position at the Raytheon Company as a Module Quality Assurance Engineer. Fulfilling yet another goal, Scott became a licensed contractor which would showcase his remarkable wood working ability. In 1996, Scott married the former Linda Beebe Keene. Until his death, he and Linda shared their passion for all things nature provided by camping, hiking and kayaking at any place their RV, "The Relentless", brought them. Scott took great pleasure maintaining their two acre homestead in Westerly. He cherished working the land and updating their small cottage house. Happily working side by side, he and Linda created their own little woodland paradise. Scott will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Scott's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! “No matter what your job is, no matter which service you're in, there are incredibly valuable leadership, organizational, decision-making and problem-solving skills that every person in the military has, and [translates very well to help the digital transformation underway at Raytheon Missiles and Defense].” This week, we are honored to welcome Wesley (Wes) D. Kremer to the FourBlock Podcast for an insightful and informative conversation on leadership with co-host Mike Abrams. As president of Raytheon Missiles & Defense, a business of Raytheon Technologies, Wes leads 31,000 employees and is responsible for a broad portfolio of air and missile defense systems, precision weapons, radars, command and control systems and advanced defense technologies. In this episode, Wes discusses reflects on his career with Raytheon Missiles and Defense and on his military service, including what prompted him to join the military, why it was his dream to join the U.S. Air Force, and what he did during his 11 years in service. Wes notes how building relationships during his transition helped him secure his first post-military job and shares lessons learned from his time in the military and in his first civilian role before joining Raytheon Missiles and Defense. Wes and Mike talk in-depth about leadership, sharing invaluable insights about what veterans can bring to leadership roles in the civilian workforce, what the hallmark of a true leader is, and how scaling leadership – delegating responsibility versus delegating tasks – makes you a more strategic leader and helps the employees under you grow. An electrical engineer and U.S. Air Force veteran, Wes has decades of executive experience in aerospace and defense. He held multiple leadership positions at Raytheon Company prior to its merger with United Technologies Corporation in 2020, including president of both the Raytheon Missile Systems and the Integrated Defense Systems businesses. In the U.S. Air Force, he served as a weapon systems officer on F-111 and F-15E aircraft and flew more than 90 combat sorties in Iraq and Bosnia. He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Montana State University and an MBA in engineering technology management from City University of Seattle. ABOUT US Welcome to the FourBlock Podcast, a show that examines veteran career transition and the military-civilian divide in the workplace. BEYA 2020   Leadership in the Age of Hip Hop (Presented by The Raytheon Company)   Rodney Bailey - Mission Assurance Director Olu Bolden - Director Trevor Dunwell - Program Manager Director LaKindra Francis-Jones - Mission Assurance and Quality Engineering Director Carol Wooden - Program Management Director   With a rich history of innovation spanning more than 100 years, Raytheon is a technology leader specializing in defense, homeland security, and other government markets.  Raytheon's success can be attributed to creating a diverse work environment where respect is a core value.  The black employee population at Raytheon is comprised mostly of generation X, Y, millennials and soon generation Z. One commonality between these generations that separates them from the baby boomers that preceded them is that they have been heavily influenced by the hip hop music culture. The hip hop culture is about embracing who you are and where you come from.  Long gone are the days of assimilating and losing your cultural identity while pursuing your career in a technical industry. This workshop will explore the journey of men and women who are navigating their career at Raytheon and how hip hop has influenced the directions they have taken in maintaining their authenticity and successfully growing in an environment that is also changing and adapting to different cultures. Come hear how these leaders have brought the tenants of leadership forward tightly coupled with the influence of hip hop, the desire to go against the grain, and the acceptance of being uniquely different.  These Raytheon leaders are using their differences to stand out to blaze new trails and expand possibilities all while being an authentic leader and a valued mentor.  These leaders lead a little differently and this makes all the difference at Raytheon.

In today’s episode, Sean Martin connects with Larry Harrington, Global Chairman of The IIA and Chief Audit Executive (CAE) for Raytheon Company (retired), and Juan Perez-Etchegoyen (“JP”), CTO of Onapsis. Privacy has taken center stage in the world of cybersecurity, especially with the enforcement of GDPR. According to my guests, studies show that companies spent an average of several millions of dollars and, despite that the first few months have been a bit chaotic with many voluntarily disclosures, this is just the beginning of big changes to come. With this, three big questions need to be answered: * How have companies been affected by privacy thus far? * How has it impacted the way consumers provide and control their personal information? * What is the cost of addressing the issues related to privacy and keeping personal information; is the cost related to compliance more than the value of the data itself? Bottom line: this is not an IT issue, this is a business issue — an issue where the customers have the upper hand in many cases. Because of this, privacy also extends beyond pure business operations and into the world of ethics and morals … and it’s time to treat this issue in its entirety. There’s a lot packed into this chat. Listen in and enjoy!

The Rocketry show FINALLY made it to the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC), thanks to the support of our sponsors, and YOU! In Part One of our coverage, we talk to the organizers of TARC 2017 and interview some of the teams involved, as well as a story that brought two unlikely groups together! Enjoy! Special thanks to the AIA for their help in getting us set up for this great opportunity! About the Team America Rocketry Challenge The Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) is the world’s largest rocket contest and the aerospace industry’s flagship program designed to encourage students to study science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) and more than 20 aerospace industry partners, TARC provides middle and high school students the opportunity to design, build and launch model rockets in a competition among approximately 5,000 students The Rocketettes nationwide each year.  Other partners providing support for the program include the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Defense, the American Association of Physics Teachers and The Mars Generation. TARC was originally conceived as a one-time contest to celebrate the 100th Robin Thurman - AIA, CG and Gheem anniversary of flight. After receiving hundreds of requests from students, teachers and parents, AIA and its Virgin Islands Team partners decided to continue the program to challenge students year-in and year-out, with varying in performance specifications. Fifteen years later, TARC is still going strong. A pool of over $100,000 in scholarships and prizes is shared by the top 10 teams. Raytheon Company sponsors the winning team to participate in an annual International Rocketry Challenge, which alternates each year between the Paris Air Show and the Farnborough International Airshow in London.
