A summit of African leaders to address the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has directed army chiefs to meet within five days and "provide technical direction on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire". The meeting, which came to a close in Tanzania YESTERDAY, brought together the leaders of the eight-nation East African Community (EAC) and 16-member Southern African Development Community (SADC). The first-ever summit of both Eastern and Southern African blocs called for the withdrawal of "uninvited foreign armed forces from the territory of the DRC" and emphasized their commitment to safeguarding Congolese sovereignty. It also called for an opening of humanitarian corridors to evacuate the dead and injured and urged the M23 rebels to stop their offensive to help address the dire humanitarian crisis. To take a deeper look at the outcomes of the SADC/EAC summit, Bongiwe Zwane spoke to David Monyae, Associate Professor of Political Science and International Relations at UJ and Thomas Mandrup, an Associate Professor with the Royal Danish Defence College and Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa at Stellenbosch University and Dr. Kingsley Makhubela, Risk Analyst and Former South African Diplomat

On January 6, 2021, we watched on live television as Donald Trump and several Republican members of Congress incited a violent attempted overthrow of our democracy. This insurrection led to several deaths, including police officers who later died by suicide. When Joe Biden was sworn in as President in January 2021, Democrats controlled both chambers of Congress. Instead of using their time in power to pass a resolution or bill banning Trump and his supporters from holding office under the 14th Amendment's "insurrection clause" (Section 3), they held hearings that concluded with a report and a referral to the Department of Justice for possible criminal prosecution. In the 2022 midterms, Democrats lost the House due to America's worsening gerrymandering crisis. Attorney General Merrick Garland waited two years to appoint Special Prosecutor Jack Smith. While some credit the Democrats' January 6 committee for prompting Garland to take action, the reality is that both Democrats and Garland wasted valuable time. In the four years since January 6, 2021, no resolution or bill was passed in Congress to enforce the insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment. Instead, a group of voters and legal experts attempted to bar Trump from the ballot in Colorado, leading to legal cases such as Trump v. Anderson. In early 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that states could not bar federal candidates, and that applying the 14th Amendment was up to Congress. So, why didn't Democrats act in 2021 and 2022 when they had two years to enforce the U.S. Constitution? We need an honest accounting of how an insurrectionist will be president just four years after leading a violent attempt to overthrow our democracy. Democrats deferred to Merrick Garland, who then deferred to Jack Smith, who ultimately dismissed his Trump cases in November 2024, after Trump won one of the closest elections in U.S. history. This election took place amid rampant disinformation and the consolidation of far-right media, including Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter, turning it into a platform for (pro-Trump and Russia) disinformation–the largest in the world. At the same time, Republicans and the Supreme Court over the years undermined the Voting Rights Act and expanded voter ID laws–a modern day poll tax, disenfranchising 21 million Americans. As Andrea and Terrell discuss in this week's episode, the 2024 election was neither free nor fair. The institutions meant to protect us failed. As Gaslit Nation has long warned, an unpunished attempted coup leads to a successful one. The institutionalists and controlled opposition who enabled this crisis don't realize they are not safe either. Once a dictator is in power, no one can control them. We also point out that George Orwell warned us about fascist bootlickers like Trump/Musk fanboy Lex Fridman, whose three-hour interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky can be summed up by Orwell's quote: "Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind." Gaslit Nation officially calls on Lex Fridman to stop quoting Orwell on his podcast—Orwell would have hated you. Want to enjoy Gaslit Nation ad-free? Yesterday (6th January 2025) the Labour government announced of a significant increase in the use of private healthcare providers to address NHS waiting lists. While some may argue this is a pragmatic response to backlogs, the implications of this policy confirm a deeper, more troubling shift.A Pattern of PrivatisationI have long pointed to the Labour Party's pro-privatisation stance, but this warning has all too often fallen on deaf ears, both of Labour activists and some voters. I can't tell you how many times I have been at hustings or meetings about the NHS where people simply don't believe that Labour, the self-styled ‘party of the NHS' has anything but the best of intentions for it and keeping it public. However, this is not the case. Even under Corbyn (who supported the Bill as a back bencher) the Labour Party was whipped to abstain on the NHS Reinstatement Bill, which would have put removing profits from NHS service into law.Wes Streeting, the Shadow Health Secretary, has consistently shown sympathy towards private healthcare, and the Labour Party has received sizeable donations from private health companies. Yesterday's announcement underscores a fundamental issue: the NHS is being incrementally handed over to private firms, under the guise of efficiency and backlog reduction. This is not a short-term solution. Once private providers become even more entrenched in NHS operations, they are unlikely to leave. NHS money—already stretched to its limit—is being funnelled into private pockets, with no new funding in sight. For those who argue that private providers will simply vanish once waiting lists are cleared, the reality is far from it. Their presence will likely expand, creating a system where profit motives increasingly dictate healthcare provision. The Staff Shortage ProblemOne of the key flaws in this approach is the misconception that private hospitals can offer additional capacity. Private healthcare providers do not conjure up new staff; they largely rely on NHS-trained consultants, many of whom divide their time between public and private work. As private workloads increase, NHS capacity inevitably suffers. The problem isn't a lack of facilities but a chronic shortage of staff—a situation exacerbated by diverting personnel to more lucrative private roles.Skimming Profits from Routine ProceduresEven if we were to assume that private healthcare provides genuine extra capacity, this policy creates another financial burden for the NHS. Private providers typically focus on straightforward, high-volume procedures like hip and knee replacements—the very services where NHS hospitals can generate a modest surplus to offset the losses from more complex and costly treatments, such as emergency care or cancer therapies.By outsourcing routine operations, the NHS loses this vital revenue stream, making it even harder to sustain essential but less ‘profitable' services. The result? NHS hospitals will struggle even more, while private firms profit.Shiny Private Facilities vs. Crumbling NHS InfrastructureIt's easy to see why patients might prefer private hospitals, with their modern facilities. But this shouldn't be a choice forced upon them due to the government's neglect of NHS infrastructure. My partner works in a typical, tired and crumbling NHS hospital where wards are sometimes closed because of plumbing disasters—a problem that could easily be resolved with proper investment in capital projects. Yet, funding for such improvements is sorely lacking.Instead of funnelling money into private hospitals, the government should be investing in NHS facilities, expanding capacity, and addressing the maintenance backlog. Shiny private hospitals might appear appealing in the short term, but they represent a long-term erosion of the NHS's ability to provide universal, equitable care.A Bold Solution: Nationalise Private HospitalsThe Labour government claims there is no alternative to private sector involvement, but history tells us otherwise. When the NHS was founded, private hospitals were brought into public ownership to ensure universal healthcare. If we truly want to expand NHS capacity, the solution is simple: nationalise private hospitals and integrate them into the public healthcare system. This approach would immediately bolster NHS capacity without diverting funds to profit-driven providers. Anything less is a tacit admission that the government prioritises private profit over public health. What Can You Do?To combat this privatisation agenda, take action now. Write to your Labour MP or local Labour Party and express your opposition to private sector outsourcing. Make it clear that their stance on this issue will influence your vote. Even if you've never voted Labour, they won't know—what matters is the pressure from constituents.Additionally, consider supporting a party that unequivocally opposes NHS privatisation. As a former Green Party candidate, I believe the Greens are the only party in England committed to removing private firms from the NHS and restoring it as a public service.Your vote is your voice—use it to demand a healthcare system that prioritises people over profit. The future of the NHS depends on our collective action. If we fail to stand against these policies now, privatisation will continue, and the core principles of our healthcare system will be eroded beyond recognition.Vote for what you believe in, and fight for a truly public NHS. Master the Art of Checking In with Self | 4 Steps to Support Your Emotions & Further Inner Discovery Many of us aren't living the lives that we want, because we are too afraid to fail. However we define failure, it feels like a such a crippling experiencing, we would rather play small and live life unsatisfied, then to deal with it head on. While I like to put the majority of the blame on the schooling system, we each have a role to play, when it comes to the behaviours we allow that hurt us and that help us. This includes the way we navigate the possibility of failing. In truth, if you've never failed, you've never really tried. Living and learning, it involves failing as a prerequisite. You're not going to know what to do if you're embracing the experience of figuring it out. It's pretty much how you figure things out... failing your way to success. And unless you embrace the bumps and bruises that come with the failures that pave your way to success... the likelihood that you'll experiencing succeeding (by the million and one definitions of success), is likely small. Interview with Frederick H. Earnest, President & CEO of Vista GoldOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/vista-gold-tsxvgz-smaller-scale-strategy-to-enhance-economics-5520Recording date: 11th December 2024Vista Gold Corp (NYSE-AMERICAN & TSX:VGZ) has unveiled plans to transform its flagship Mount Todd gold project in Australia's Northern Territory through a new, optimized development approach. The company is pivoting from its previous large-scale development plan to a more manageable and capital-efficient operation. The new feasibility study, currently underway, will evaluate a 15,000 tonne per day operation, significantly scaled down from the original 50,000 tonne per day plan. This revised approach aims to reduce initial capital costs from over $1 billion to less than $400 million, representing a 60% reduction. Despite the smaller scale, the project is expected to maintain robust production of 150,000-200,000 ounces of gold annually over a mine life exceeding 30 years.Vista Gold plans to enhance project economics by implementing a higher cut-off grade of 0.45-0.5 g/t gold, up from the previous 0.35 g/t. This adjustment is expected to lift the reserve grade closer to 1.0 g/t, though it will reduce the overall reserve to approximately 5-5.5 million ounces of gold. The company will also incorporate contract mining to optimize capital costs, though this will result in slightly higher all-in sustaining costs of $1,200-$1,250 per ounce.Recent exploration success has added another dimension to the project's potential. Drilling at the new South Crossload area has revealed significant high-grade intercepts, including 2.1 meters at 13.0 g/t gold and 1.0 meter at approximately 26 g/t gold. This previously unknown style of mineralization suggests potential for future underground mining operations to supplement the main project.A key advantage of Mount Todd is its advanced permitting status, with all major authorizations secured, including Federal Environmental Impact Statement approval and Northern Territory operating permits. This positions the project for rapid advancement once a construction decision is made. The development strategy aligns with broader industry trends, as global gold producers face declining reserves and limited new discoveries. Vista Gold's CEO Frederick Earnest emphasizes that the industry cannot sustain current production levels of approximately 3,000 tons of gold annually without developing new projects and making major discoveries. With the feasibility study expected to be completed in mid-2025, Vista Gold aims to demonstrate Mount Todd's potential as a significant new gold producer in a stable mining jurisdiction. Australian law firm Maurice Blackburn is investigating a publisher class action against Google in a strikingly similar $8 billion lawsuit already underway in Canada – led by a tiny regional community publishing boss, Lisa Sygutek, who won't be cowed. “Find your inner warrior, sign-up, go for it,” she urges Australian media owners. Miranda Nagy, the lawyer leading the Australian class action investigation, likewise calls on publishers large and small to join the proposed action. She's aiming to secure “best possible” retrospective compensation. Maurice Blackburn has come to the same conclusion as the US Department of Justice, various European regulators, and a dozen US state attorneys general. They allege Google manipulated and gamed publishers and brands for years with secret deals and projects – some in collusion with Meta – that actively sought to disadvantage them while entrenching Google's market dominance – taking billions of dollars away from publishers and fleecing advertisers in the process by charging far more than was either necessary or officially disclosed. The alleged ruses include things like ‘project Bernanke', in which Google was essentially able to “to take a bigger spread between publishers and advertisers, which means both publishers are getting less money and advertisers are paying more,” according to Adil Abdulla, the lawyer leading the Canadian legal effort through Sotos Class Actions. Then there was ‘Jedi Blue', in which Google is accused of colluding with Facebook to kill the free market publishers and the broader ad market had tried to build through header bidding, while ensuring Facebook got an ad auction advantage in return. Jason Kint, CEO of US peak publisher body Digital Content Next, says Jedi Blue's impacts “are still playing out” and forecasts “a bloodbath of lawsuits being filed”. He thinks the Trump administration will go just as hard with “eight to 10 different code name projects” to go after. While many US publishers, advertisers and agencies had been “captured” by Google, Kint reckons that “halo is starting to come off”. He urges marketers and the supply chain locally to likewise reject being strong-armed. For publishers, Future Media founder Ricky Sutton echoes that call: “This is the first window in 20 years where we've got a chance to take back some of the things that we've lost. What we do is too valuable to be lost to one commercial company with a 25 year run in the sunlight.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There are mixed reactions in Gabon after military rulers this week announced that a referendum on a new constitution will be held November 16. The new charter would remove the post of prime minister, a move that critics say gives too much power to the president. As Moki Edwin Kindzeka reports from neighboring Cameroon, the opposition is also not happy that military leader General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema would be allowed to run for president if the new constitution is approved.
During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology we're getting granular about the divine, salvific grace Paul riffs on early in his letter to the Romans. We're going to take a long pause in our collective amble down the Romans Road so as to marinate in the concept of justification. We're going to do an in-depth review of how the sinless life and sacrificial death of Jesus Christ made it possible for rebellious, sin-riddled yahoos like us to be reconciled with a perfectly righteous God. Because all too often we church folk tend to volley multi-syllabic theological terms like “justification” and “sanctification” and “propitiation” amongst ourselves like innocuous doctrinal pickle balls without giving too much thought to the grief and gravitas they represent. In much the same way we blithely wear crosses as mere jewelry or prominently display it in the form of a hip tattoo, forgetting what that Roman torture device – equivalent to a medieval guillotine or modern-day electric chair, which I can't imagine someone wearing as a fashion statement – represents…that the King of all kings chose to leave His throne in glory, condescend to human form and humble circumstances, only to be betrayed and abandoned by His closest friends and ultimately have stakes hammered into His feet and wrists so He could be suspended in the air like a human shish-kabob while a cruel mob jeered His torture and subsequent murder because Jesus knew His blood was the necessary price that had to be paid in order to justify – to make us right – with God. We're not going to skip past the hard facts of what He sacrificed for our redemption today y'all because quite honestly doing so mitigates the miracle of our salvation. So please grab a great big mug of strong coffee and your Bible – unless of course you're in the hot-wax stage of a manicure – and come ponder the audacious kindness of King Jesus on the porch with Alli, Dr. Howard and me.

When cars, planes, ships or computers are built from a material that functions as both a battery and a load-bearing structure, the weight and energy consumption are radically reduced. A research group at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden is now presenting a world-leading advance in so-called massless energy storage - a structural battery that could halve the weight of a laptop, make the mobile phone as thin as a credit card or increase the driving range of an electric car by up to 70 percent on a single charge. "We have succeeded in creating a battery made of carbon fibre composite that is as stiff as aluminium and energy-dense enough to be used commercially. Just like a human skeleton, the battery has several functions at the same time," says Chalmers researcher Richa Chaudhary, who is the first author of a scientific article recently published in Advanced Materials. Research on structural batteries has been going on for many years at Chalmers, and in some stages also together with researchers at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. When Professor Leif Asp and colleagues published their first results in 2018 on how stiff, strong carbon fibres could store electrical energy chemically, the advance attracted massive attention. The news that carbon fibre can function as electrodes in lithium-ion batteries was widely spread and the achievement was ranked as one of the year's ten biggest breakthroughs by the prestigious Physics World. Lower weight requires less energy Since then, the research group has further developed its concept to increase both stiffness and energy density. The previous milestone was reached in 2021 when the battery had an energy density of 24 watt-hours per kilogramme (Wh/kg), which means roughly 20 percent capacity of a comparable lithium-ion battery. Now it's up to 30 Wh/kg. While this is still lower than today's batteries, the conditions are quite different. When the battery is part of the construction and can also be made of a lightweight material, the overall weight of the vehicle is greatly reduced. Then not nearly as much energy is required to run an electric car, for example. "Investing in light and energy-efficient vehicles is a matter of course if we are to economise on energy and think about future generations. We have made calculations on electric cars that show that they could drive for up to 70 percent longer than today if they had competitive structural batteries," says research leader Leif Asp, who is a professor at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science at Chalmers. When it comes to vehicles, of course, there are high demands on the design to be sufficiently strong to meet safety requirements. There, the research team's structural battery cell has significantly increased its stiffness, or more specifically, the elastic modulus, which is measured in gigapascal (GPa), from 25 to 70. This means that the material can carry loads just as well as aluminium, but with a lower weight. "In terms of multifunctional properties, the new battery is twice as good as its predecessor - and actually the best ever made in the world," says Leif Asp, who has been researching structural batteries since 2007. Several steps towards commercialisation From the start, the goal was to achieve a performance that makes it possible to commercialise the technology. In parallel with the fact that the research is now continuing, the link to the market has been strengthened - through the newly started Chalmers Venture company Sinonus AB, based in Borås, Sweden. However, there is still a lot of engineering work to be done before the battery cells have taken the step from lab manufacturing on a small scale to being produced on a large scale for our technology gadgets or vehicles. "One can imagine that credit card-thin mobile phones or laptops that weigh half as much as today, are the closest in time. It could also be that components such as electronics in cars or planes are powered ...

The Non-Prosecution Agreement (NPA) involving Jeffrey Epstein was a controversial legal arrangement reached in 2007 between Epstein, a wealthy financier, and the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida. The NPA came about as Epstein faced allegations of sexually abusing underage girls. It allowed him to plead guilty to two state prostitution charges, serving just 13 months in a county jail with work release privileges. In exchange, federal charges against him were dropped, and the agreement granted immunity not only to Epstein but also to any potential co-conspirators.The secrecy surrounding the NPA and the leniency of the sentence sparked outrage and accusations of preferential treatment due to Epstein's wealth and connections. Critics argued that the deal was unjust and failed to adequately address the gravity of Epstein's crimes or provide justice for his victims. In the years following the NPA, Epstein continued to face legal scrutiny and accusations of sexual abuse. However, the agreement insulated him from federal prosecution for the crimes covered in the deal until his arrest in July 2019 on new federal charges of sex trafficking minors. Epstein died by suicide in his jail cell a month later, while awaiting trial. Now, decades after the original prosecution, Ron DeSantis has signed a bill that will allow the release of the grand jury documents in question.(commercial at 8:46)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Florida Gov.
