Petty Officer George “Curt” Davison (USN) and Cpl Tom Lacey Cpl Tom LaceyTom grew up on Wheaton, IL and enlisted into the Army on July 15, 1943. After completing Basic at Camp Fannin, Tom volunteered and completed Radio School (FM SCR 300s) at Camp Maxey and was then assigned Company C, 99th Infantry Division. After arriving in Liverpool Oct 1944, Tom was deployed to the ETO 3 weeks later and was trucked to the Siegfried line near Krinkelt and then battled in the Hurtgen Forest Campaign. On Dec 16, 1944, Tom was awoken to heavy barrage at the start of the Battle of the Bulge. The 99th defensive positions were overrun by several German companies after a rolling barrage. While Tom was engaged in several small arms skirmishes, air to air combat raged overhead. Tom lived through relentless artillery barrages from both the enemy and US 105s and helped evacuate one of his buddie’s (Red Netter) who had been hit. The 99th withdrew to an advantageous strategic position on the Elsenborn Ridge. Tom spent the next 3-4 days along with Sgt Baker (C Co) within foxholes on this infamous ridge, defending their position from the onslaught of German forces. The 99th assisted with a counterattack led by Shermans in the 9th Armored. Tom and his comrades in the 99th were the 1st to cross the Rhine at the bridge at Remagen in March 1944 despite being shelled by devastating 88 mm artillery fire. Tom was discharged at Ft Lewis on Feb 2, 1946. Tom leaves us with the following pearls: There is little correlation between rank and leadership, basic training is effective, the GI was not only a good soldier, but a good innovator, medics were brave, well-trained and effective, the Red Ball Express was instrumental in US victory, never hate your enemy, everyone has something good to offer to the world, you never know where the next hero will come from and pray daily to your guardian angel. Rudderow that travelled to nearly 30 locations in the Pacific Theatre of Operations from 1943 to 1946. The USS Rudderow participated in submarine hunter-killer patrols, escort of resupply and troop reinforcement convoys and oversaw landings of landing crafts. Curt observed the suicide attacks on US ships by enemy pilots and the impact of a severe typhoon on his ship to the extent that the deck was under water. Curt’s ship also carried some of the soldiers who had survived the Battaan Death March after their release from prison camps. Curt was honorably discharged from the Navy in the summer of 1946. Curt believes that being in the Navy was an adventure and enabled him to see many places and become good friends with many sailors throughout the US. Curt recommends that no matter what your age, that you should stay active as he has been awarded thousands of medals and holds several state, five national and one world record as a Senior Olympian.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The U.S. Navy faced multiple threats in an emerging technology environment. The past two years have offered many lessons about the efficacy of anti-ship ballistic missiles and unmanned platforms and we must identify and learn them. The lessons from Ukraine and Yemen are shaping fleet design for the next generation. Understanding the context of the lessons from the conflicts is crucial. What can the Battle of Lissa tell us? In 1866, the navies of Austria and Italy fought near the island of Vis. Cutting the story short, the Austrians attacked in formations designed to aggressively ram the Italian ships, winning the battle despite an inferior status. The lessons of Lissa would impact naval design for the next 50 years. Before the Battle navies believed in the big gun. After Lissa navies were copying the Austrians and adding rams to new ships and developing ram-based tactics. But the lesson was wrong and the torpedo was the future. As modern navies prepare for future conflict, it is important to understand the context of lessons, or risk drawing faulty conclusions. Past as Prologue For nearly 150 years, from De Ruyter until Nelson, naval tactics were static. Wooden ships fought each other with broadsides. Technical innovations squeezed more efficiency at the margins. Copper sheathing improved ships' maneuverability with additional speed. The carronade increased the lethality of a ship's broadside while decreasing cannon weight. These technological advances did not change the general tactic of pummeling ships with cannon broadsides. The 19th century was an age of technological revolution and emerging technology. In 1807, Robert Fulton tested his first steamboat in New York. This technology would continue to develop throughout the century. The steam engine revolutionized naval warfare because ocean-going warships were no longer beholden to the wind for maneuver. Developments in artillery meant that cannons were capable of firing explosive shells on flat trajectories to destroy wooden-hulled warships. By the 1840s, France and Britain sold these weapons to any nation that had the coin for them. Even the Republic of Texas Navy employed explosive shells fired from cannons. Explosive shells were great equalizers in naval combat. Armored warships appeared in the 1850s to counter improved artillery. France was the first nation to use armored warships during the Crimean War. Armored ships were impervious to the explosive shells of the age. The naval question of the second half of the 19th century was how to defeat armored vessels while naval guns improved sufficiently to threaten armored warships. The see-saw between warships' armor and artillery lasted until the end of the battleship era. Ramming Austria, Prussia, and Italy fought a war in 1866. Most historians know the War of 1866 as the Austro-Prussian War, but in Italy it is known as the Third Italian War of Unification. Ashore, the Austro-Prussian War was decided at the battle of Sadowa (Königgrätz). In Italy, Austria defeated the Italian army at Custozza again and at sea at Lissa. The Austrians were commanded by Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff. His officers all understood his battle plans and they had painted their ships different colours to help identification. Although Tegetthoff's ships were smaller and carried smaller guns they would attempt to break the Italian line with three V-shaped formations. The first V composed his ironclads, the second V composed his large steam frigates, and the third V composed the fleet's smallest ships. Just before the battle the Italian commander, Admiral Persano shifted his flag to another ship. This caused tremendous confusion in the Italian Fleet because the shift was not planned for. Italian commanders looked to the old flagship for leadership and direction but found none. Tegetthoff's fleet broke the line in two places. The first V, led by Tegetthoff, engaged the central portion of the fleet. The second V of unarmoured ships broke the line n...

MPR News is following an incident where dozens of federal agents to surround a restaurant in the heart of the Latino community in Minneapolis Tuesday. As news of the operation spread on social media, people believing the presence of federal agents was connected to an immigration raid tried to block tactical vehicles from coming down Lake Street and shouted at agents. At one point, some law enforcement used a chemical irritant to break up the crowd. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a statement it was part of a narcotics and money laundering investigation and not related to immigration enforcement. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office partnered with federal agencies to carry out the investigation, according to a statement posted on social media. It's hard to fathom, but in the United States Reformed Christians make up a very small percentage of protestant congregations and congregants. That means that publishing houses that are much bigger than Reformation Heritage books and personalities with a bigger reach than R.C. Are you a young white man who just can't seem to get a stable job that will afford a home, a family, and modest lifestyle? Well have no fear: Panda Express is hiring assistant managers for seventy thousand dollars a year! Or, you could work at Chipotle stuffing burritos and be making one-hundred grand in just a few years! It seems silly, but this is real advice being offered by “conservative” think tank journalists and pundits. If, after all, they managed to make their big break a decade or two ago there's no reason you can't put on a suit and tie, walk into a business and secure yourself a good job offer with a solid handshake. I'm being tongue in cheek, but in Biblical terms this is called exasperating your sons. Real wages are the lowest they've ever been. Housing is flat out unaffordable. This is all while 94% of new jobs added to the S&P 100 companies are going to people of color, who are a significant minority in the US. Advice that really did work for the prior generation just doesn't get as far any more. It's harder than ever to provide, save, and build up an inheritance.
