Narrating Irish Female Development, 1916-2018 (Edinburgh UP, 2024) studies narratives of Irish female and feminized development, arguing that these postmodern narratives present Irish female maturation as disordered and often deliberately disorderly. The first full-length study of the Irish female coming of age story, the book develops a feminist psychoanalytic narratology, derived from the belated oedipalization of Joyce's bildungsheld, to read these stories. This study argues that all Irish maturation stories are shaped by the uneven and belated maturation story of the Irish republic itself, which took as its avatar the Irish woman, whose citizenship in that republic was unrealized, as indeed was her citizenship in an Irish republic of letters. Dougherty takes the writing of Irish women as seriously as other critics have taken Joyce's work. Discusses texts by James Joyce, John McGahern, Hannah Lynch, Kate O'Brien, Lady Gregory, Maud Gonne, Mary Colum, Elizabeth Bowen, Edna O'Brien, Dervla Murphy, Clare Boylan, Nuala O'Faolain, Eavan Boland, Anne Enright, Claire Keegan, Eimear McBride, Éilís ní Dhuibhne, Melatu Uche Okorie, and Soula Emmanuel Examines the form, narration, and content of fictional, non-fictional, and national narratives Develops a feminist psychoanalytic narratology Synthesizes historical, sociojuridical, feminist, post-colonial, and literary historical narratives of Irish development Jane Elizabeth Dougherty is Professor in the School of Literature, Writing and Digital Humanities and affiliate faculty in the School of Africana and Multicultural Studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. In this episode of The PDB Afternoon Bulletin: First, America's space chief is sounding the alarm on Russian and Chinese advances in space-based warfare, including Beijing's “kill web” satellite network, Moscow's intention to put a nuclear weapon into orbit, and their joint project to build a permanent moon base by mid-2030. We'll have the details. Later in the show—in a surprising development, we are learning that Israel is engaged in secret talks with the new Islamist regime in Syria. The discussions are reportedly aimed at reducing tensions between the longtime adversaries, and at potentially having Damascus join the Abraham Accords, which would further erode Iran's strategic interests in the Middle East. What happens when a burned-out single-family flipper pivots—and builds a $75M self-storage empire? In this episode, discover how Travis Ryan Baucom shares how he transitioned from managing 400+ single-family deals to building and syndicating scalable self-storage facilities across Texas and Oklahoma. You'll hear the full story of how he achieved a 154% return for investors in just 18 months, his strategies for sourcing mom-and-pop facilities, and why he's laser-focused on cash flow over growth metrics. Travis also pulls back the curtain on raising capital through LinkedIn, cold emails, and even AI-powered phone calls—plus why he's adapting his acquisition model in today's tighter, higher-rate environment. If you're serious about finding yield in a tough market, you'll want to take notes. Top 5 Key Takeaways:Self-Storage Over Single Family: Travis left single-family real estate for a leaner, less stressful business model with fewer headaches—and far better scalability.Investor Returns First: He prioritizes cash flow and conservative underwriting, even if that means putting down 50% equity to pay preferred returns in today's market.Raising Capital with Tech & Trust: From cold emails and LinkedIn targeting to AI-driven cold calls, Travis shows how to get in front of accredited investors at scale.Finding Deals That Work: He breaks down how word-of-mouth, broker relationships, and strategic direct mail help uncover viable storage opportunities.Adaptability Is Everything: With yield tightening and leverage shrinking, he's pivoting to land entitlement, hard money lending, and small residential plays to maintain cash flow.About Tim MaiTim Mai is a real estate investor, fund manager, mentor, and founder of HERO Mastermind for REI coaches. He has helped many real estate investors and coaches become millionaires. Silas Farley, former New York City Ballet dancer and current Dean of the Colburn School's Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, explores the profound connections between classical ballet, Christian worship, and embodied spirituality. From his early exposure to liturgical dance in a charismatic Lutheran church to his career as a professional dancer and choreographer, Farley illuminates how the physicality of ballet can express deep spiritual truths and serve as an act of worship.Episode Highlights from Silas Farley“The physicality of ballet is cruciform. The dancer stands in a turned-out position... the body becomes the intersection of the vertical and the horizontal plane.”“Sin makes the soul curve in on itself, whereas holiness or wholeness in God opens us up.”“We are Christian humanists. We don't need to be intimidated by beauty.”“There's knowledge and insight in all the different parts of our bodies, not just in our brain.”“The mystery of the incarnation is that when the creator of all things wanted to make himself known to his creation, he didn't come as a vapor or as a mountain or as a bird. And he's not a brain on a stick. He's the God man. He has a jawbone and he went through puberty and he has wounds like the beautiful hymn. It says, rich wounds, yet visible and beauty glorified. The mystery of the incarnation is that when the creator of all things wanted to make himself known to his creation, he didn't come as a vapor or as a mountain or as a bird, but he came as a man. And so he sublimates and affirms the glory of his creation, the materiality of his creation and the body as the crown of his creation by coming as a man.”Church needs more embodied practicesBallet offers counterpoint to disembodied tendenciesImportance of physical discipline in spiritual formationRomans 12:1 and making our bodies as living sacrificesHow to Experience Ballet“There's nothing you need to know before going to experience ballet. You have a body, you have eyes, you have ears. That's all you need. Just let it wash over you.Let it work on you in its own kind of visceral way, and let that be an entry point to not be intimidated by the, the music, or the wordlessness or the tutu's or the point shoes or whatever. There's so many different stylistic manifestations of ballet. But just go experience it.And if you can, I would really encourage people almost as much or more than watching it go see if like your local YMCA or something has an adult ballet class, or if you're a kid, maybe ask your parents to sign you up to go try a class and just feel what that turned-out physicality feels like in your own body. It's so beautiful. Mark Anderson has had a distinguished career in law enforcement and investigations, spanning over 30 years. His roles have included working as a Senior Special Agent for the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, along with experience as a forensic chemist. He also served as the Deputy Inspector General for New York State. After retiring, Mark and his wife co-founded Anderson Investigative Associates, a small business that provides tailored training for interviews and investigations to various clients. Mark emphasizes the importance of non-confrontational interview techniques, explaining that effective communication goes beyond law enforcement and applies to everyday human interactions and business dealings. Mark uses real-world scenarios to teach interviewing, often making parallels to childhood experiences of dishonesty. The firm coined the term LLPOF (Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire) to describe individuals who are being dishonest during interviews. He also points out the significance of reciprocity and credibility in interviews, explaining that showing integrity and consistency helps build trust and increases the likelihood of getting truthful responses. Mark underscores the value of surrounding oneself with experts who can help in areas where a business owner may be weaker. Website: Anderson Investigative Associates LinkedIn: Mark A. CTO Series: The Anti-Scaling Paradox: Why and When a CTO Should Refuse to Grow His Team with Markus Hjort In this BONUS episode, we dive into a fascinating conversation with Markus Hjort, Co-founder and CTO of Bitmagic. With over 20 years of software development expertise, Markus shares invaluable insights on tech leadership, team scaling, and how AI is transforming the landscape of software development. From pivotal career moments to practical advice on aligning tech strategy with business objectives, this episode offers wisdom for technology leaders and developers alike. Defining Moments in Tech Leadership "As a leader, for me, it is important that we have a positive attitude." Markus reflects on two pivotal experiences that shaped his leadership philosophy. Early in his career, he received feedback about his positive approach to challenging tasks, which reinforced his belief in maintaining an optimistic outlook when facing difficulties. This approach has allowed him to inspire team members during tough situations. The second defining moment relates to estimation skills. After participating in a rescue mission for a delayed project, Markus learned the importance of making realistic ballpark estimates rather than succumbing to unrealistic deadlines. His initial two-year estimate for a project was met with resistance from a client who wanted it done in two months, but the project ultimately took four years to complete - twice his original estimate. Leads by example with a positive attitude toward challenges Values the skill of making quick but realistic ballpark estimates Recommends "Programming Pearls" for developers to improve estimation skills Emphasizes that product developers should create different options to reach goals In this segment, Markus refers to the book Programming Pearls. Aligning Tech Strategy with Business Objectives "Nothing should come for me as a surprise." When it comes to ensuring tech strategy supports business goals, Markus emphasizes the importance of continuous communication with key stakeholders. Through regular informal discussions, he stays aware of emerging ideas and maintains strong relationships with decision-makers. This approach helps him anticipate future feature requirements and translate technical strategy into business objectives. The foundation of this alignment is built on trust and transparency. Maintains constant discussions with critical stakeholders Develops awareness of emerging ideas through informal conversations Identifies and builds relationships with decision-makers Translates technical considerations into business language Fostering Collaboration Between Tech and Business Units "In the end we create the shared understanding and the habit of working together which creates better alignment and trust." While structured meetings are important, Markus believes that true collaboration happens when people work together across departmental boundaries. In previous roles, he implemented small, cross-functional teams that included business representatives during feature development. At Bitmagic, they conduct regular gameplay test sessions that anyone in the company can join, fostering unpredictable connections and conversations. These informal interactions are especially valuable in a remote-only company. Creates small teams with business representation for feature development Implements regular demo sessions open to everyone in the company Encourages cross-departmental work to build shared understanding Emphasizes the importance of informal discussions in remote environments Scaling Engineering Teams Strategically "You have to be careful when to scale, and when not to scale." Markus advocates for a measured approach to team growth during scaling phases. He believes in small teams of talented individuals and prefers to grow at a deliberate pace rather than rushing to add new members. Sometimes, he's even paused hiring to focus on meeting milestones with existing resources. When rapid scaling is necessary, Markus recommends considering contractors to reduce risk and gain specialized expertise quickly, particularly in fields like gaming that require deep specialization. Believes in small teams of talented individuals Grows team size at a deliberate pace Sometimes pauses hiring to focus on delivery with existing team Strategically uses both employees and contractors based on circumstances Navigating Financial Challenges in Startups "From the tech view it was clear this was not a good idea, but from the business perspective, it was the right decision to make." One of the toughest challenges Markus faced involved making difficult decisions during financial constraints. In a previous startup, when resources were tight, he had to split his team between the main product and a "side project" that had been sold to generate revenue. Though technically suboptimal, this business-driven decision was necessary for survival. This experience highlights the complex balancing act CTOs often face between technical ideals and business realities. The Impact of AI on Software Development "It has changed my way of thinking of my work as a programmer." Having worked on AI-powered game development for over two years, Markus has witnessed the rapid evolution of AI technologies. This experience has influenced his approach to team expansion, as he considers how AI might augment human capabilities. Personally, he now uses code assistants regularly and wouldn't return to traditional programming methods. AI has transformed his workflow as a programmer and expanded his capabilities, particularly as a full-stack engineer. Measuring Engineering Success Beyond Metrics "In early startup stages, one of the critical metrics is 'the working software.'" Rather than relying heavily on rigid metrics, Markus focuses on practical indicators of success for engineering teams. In early-stage startups, he prioritizes the frequency of releasing working software to end users. Additionally, he monitors team energy and morale, looking for signals in commit messages and code review comments that might indicate the team's well-being. As teams grow, he sees value in using tools to help track these emotional indicators systematically. Focuses on frequency of releasing working software Monitors team energy and morale as key indicators Looks for signals in commit messages and code reviews Considers team well-being as important as technical output Recommended Reading "Press 'pause' when you feel you are in a crisis situation." Markus credits "Rapid Development" by Steve McConnell as a significant influence on his approach to software development, particularly before Agile methodologies became mainstream. One lasting lesson from the book is avoiding the anti-pattern of "abandoning all planning under pressure." Instead, Markus recommends pausing when facing a crisis to reassess and plan effectively, rather than rushing into reactive solutions. About Markus Hjort Markus Hjort is the Co-founder and CTO of Bitmagic, with over 20 years of software development expertise. Starting with Commodore 64 game programming, his career spans gaming, fintech, and more. As a programmer, consultant, agile coach, and leader, Markus has successfully guided numerous tech startups from concept to launch. You can link with Markus Hjort on LinkedIn and listen to Markus Hjort's podcast in Finnish, and follow his work with the future of AI in gaming at Bitmagic.ai.

"Building" swim sets consist of one or more rounds of effort of a specific distance where you increase your intensity level during each effort. This increase can be prescribed as either a gradual build throughout the effort or stepped increases at each lap. Why It Works: Enhances pacing awareness by training different effort zones within a single rep. Improves muscular endurance by incorporating a mix of steady-state and high-intensity efforts. Develops speed control with structured builds and descends. Mimics race-day demands by conditioning you to shift gears smoothly. Breaking It Down: Warmup & Prep Work: 400-600 warmup with skills and drills Main Set 8 x 25 as odds @ Z2, Evens Build (15 sec) 4 x 50 Desc 1-4 ( 15 sec) 100 Choice The opening set gets you primed with shorter distances at varying efforts: 25s and 50s focus on gradual builds and controlled descends, waking up speed while reinforcing technique. 100 Choice lets you ease into the workout with your preferred stroke or focus area. Main Set – 4 Rounds of: 4 x 75 (25 sec) as 50 @ Z1, 25 @ Z2 50 @ Z1, 25 @ Z5 25 @ Z2, 50 @ Z4 75 Build to Z5 2 x 50 Drill Choice (20 sec) Each 4-round cycle focuses on controlled effort changes within each 75: First two reps balance steady swimming with a finishing push. Third rep reverses the effort, starting moderate and ending fast. Fourth rep builds all the way to Zone 5, pushing your top-end speed. Drill-focused 50s in between rounds reinforce efficiency before the next push. The Finisher – Kicking & Cooldown 2x 100 Kick (20 sec) 100 Kick sets add a strong aerobic and leg endurance component. Cooldown allows for a return to relaxed, controlled form. Cool Down Balance of time @ Z2 and/or repeat warmup drills as time permits. Takeaways: This workout is perfect for triathletes needing to fine-tune their ability to push through different effort levels in a race. Whether it's the back half of a long swim or a surge to catch a pack, Building 75's train both strength and strategic speed control—exactly what you need to swim smarter and faster on race day. Give this one a go and let us know—how do you handle changing speeds in the water? Fun Segment: Life in the fast lane!!! How It Works: Each guest gets hit with 5 rapid-fire, high-stakes triathlon scenarios. No thinking, no justifying—just a fast answer and on to the next! Life in the Fast Lane – This Week's Scenarios: Last-Minute Gear Swap You're at the start line and realize you grabbed the wrong gear bag. You can either race with… A tri kit 2 sizes too big A casio calculator watch with zero smart functions Nutrition Nightmare Your only nutrition options on the bike are… An entire gel flask of mystery flavor A banana that's been rolling around in the bottom of your bag Mid-Race Musical Madness You're stuck with ONE song on repeat for the entire run. Do you pick… "The Final Countdown" on a never-ending loop A Kidz Bop version of your favorite pump-up song The Mystery Aid Station Surprise You roll up to an aid station, parched and desperate for fuel. But the only two options left are… A cup of warm, flat soda that's been sitting in the sun all day A handful of unmarked energy chews with a questionable texture Race Finish Style You're about to cross the finish line. Do you… Go for the epic victory leap (risking a cramp) Play it cool with a subtle nod like a pro Closing Line: Alright, that was Life in the Fast Lane! No time to overthink, just go with your gut. Let us know in the comments—how would you have answered these? Closing: Thanks again for listening this week. Please be sure to follow us @303Triathlon and @grit2greatnessendurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment. We'd really appreciate it! Stay tuned, train informed, and enjoy the endurance journey!

On this week's show we look at where some Americans are spending nearly $100 a month on streaming services. We also look at some new tech from Sony that promises big improvements for LED TVs. All that plus your emails and the week's news on this episode of the HDTV and Home Theater Podcast. News: Apple TV+, Jason Sudeikis confirm fourth season of ‘Ted Lasso' Lawsuits Hit TCL & Hisense: Are Their QLED TVs A Total Scam? Sony Launches Its First New 4K Blu-ray Player In Over Five Years Other: Spectrum is finally offering a streaming-only subscription for Dodgers Many Americans Spend Over $100 per Month on Subscription Services A recent survey by Bango reveals that nearly 25% of Americans spend over $100 per month on subscription services, including streaming platforms and retail memberships like Amazon Prime. This trend marks a shift from the perception of subscriptions as cost-effective alternatives to traditional cable and satellite services, as consumers face rising costs—streaming plans alone have increased by over 20% in the past two years. To manage expenses, many consumers are turning to subscription bundles, with the average American holding 5.4 subscriptions, including 2 that come through bundled packages. A significant portion of these bundles is linked to mobile phone plans, with 55% of subscribers benefiting from such arrangements. Additionally, 44% of users report receiving services for free through bundles that they previously paid for. Convenience is another critical factor driving consumers toward bundles, as 41% express frustration with managing multiple subscriptions across different apps. A strong demand exists for unified platforms, with 63% of subscribers seeking more options like Verizon's +play. Sony Develops Next-Generation Display System Full Press Release Sony has developed a next-generation display system featuring a high-density LED backlight with independent drive RGB (red, green, and blue) control, designed for large screens. This innovative technology allows each RGB color to emit light independently, resulting in high color purity and the ability to reproduce a vibrant, wide color gamut. Key features of this display system include: Wide Color Gamut Performance: The system covers over 99% of the DCI-P3 color space and about 90% of the ITU-R BT.2020 standard, ensuring enhanced color reproduction. Advanced Backlight Control Technology: Sony's proprietary technology allows for precise control of light gradation, enabling subtle hues and detailed shading across the entire brightness range. This is particularly beneficial for cinematic productions, where accurate color representation is crucial for conveying narrative expression. Accurate Color Reproduction by a Dedicated Control Processor By individually controlling the brightness of the densely packed RGB LEDs, it is possible to render bright areas vividly without white clipping and to delicately depict the nuances of light in dark areas without black crushing. Additionally, the display system is equipped with approximately twice the processing power and pixel correction technology compared to conventional local dimming processing, allowing the reproduction of subtle color differences and accurate colors without color shifts. The display system aims to enhance film production and home viewing experiences, aligning with Sony's commitment to supporting creators through professional-grade monitors used for color grading and reference. Mass production of this new display system is set to begin in 2025, with plans for integration into consumer televisions and displays for content creation.

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosopher Karl Popper's article "Towards A Rational Theory Of Tradition", found in his book Conjectures and Refutations. It focuses specifically on his discussion of how science develops historically. Popper does not think that observation and the "scientific method" taught in classes and textbooks is really at the core of what science is and how it develops. Instead, what sustains it is a critical tradition that involves discussion about whether accounts are accurate, coherent, and defensible, along with revision of accounts in light of that discussion To support my ongoing work, go to my Patreon site - www.patreon.com/sadler If you'd like to make a direct contribution, you can do so here - www.paypal.me/ReasonIO - or at BuyMeACoffee - www.buymeacoffee.com/A4quYdWoM You can find over 3000 philosophy videos in my main YouTube channel - www.youtube.com/user/gbisadler Purchase Popper's Conjectures and Refutations - https://amzn.to/4dFvJjA
