"Dogs are beneficial to our mental and physical health." Many new dog owners find that statement hard to swallow. It's true, but it takes work to get there. We are happy you found our podcast, filled with dog training tips and information as to what is going on in your dog's brain. Your host, Katie McKnight, is a canine behavior practitioner and certified dog trainer. She is also the co-owner of ISCDT - The school for Dog Trainers. Welcome, dog owners, rescue personnel and those with a passion for dog training. We strive to help you and your dog live a happy life together.
Many people are under the assumption that only "bad" dogs bite. They believe tolerant, good dogs will never lose their cool. In reality, good dogs can be pushed to a point that they become angry. When dogs are angry they can growl, bark, jump, scratch and bite. Dogs are no different than humans. Good humans lose their cool and so can good dogs. A good dog owner works hard to prevent their dog from getting to the point of snapping. We can do that by monitoring our dog's emotions throughout the day and when interacting with others. This podcast is taking a turn from regular dog situations to focusing more on behavior and safety. This topic change follows the business motto of my new company Dog Savvy Kids. Dog Savvy Kids teaches adults and children how to read dogs. We want everyone to know when it is safe to interact with a dog and when the dog is feeling stressed, thereby needing some space. Dogs are great creatures that provide us happiness and health benefits. We want to ensure we are equally great to live with by understanding their needs. In today's episode we learn some signs dogs provide when they are feeling stressed, scared and frustrated. Let's learn about our dogs and pay attention to their mood. In doing so we will: CNTL (the environment for our dog) + ALTer (our behavior around dogs) + DEL (unnecessary dog bites). We will also learn WHEN TO PLAY and WHEN TO STAY AWAY. Did you know that more is at risk, than a dog bite, when you pull your dog by their tail? Pulling a dog's tail can cause quite a bit of damage for the dog. We are going to discuss the injuries that can occur. We will also provide alternate ways to keep your dog from bolting out the door and failing to listen. We will also discuss a strange behavior that some dog owners have witnessed. It is called dog trancing. Learn about the behavior, the medical findings and what you should (or should't) do when you notice it. If you would like to read about these two subjects, visit our website at iscdt.com and click on blog. We write about a host of behaviors and problem solvers. I love creating podcasts to help people learn more about their canine friends and how to overcome issues, but have had difficulty fitting the hours in to publish my podcast weekly. So, I changed the format. For now, my podcasts will run 10 minutes or less. They will include WHY dogs do the things they dog -- WHEN their behavior can be bothersome or dangerous for themselves or others -- and HOW to solve the issue. Sometimes it is best to just stick to the facts. I am excited to record again. This week we discuss WHY dogs are attracted to cat poop. WHEN this behavior is harmful to dogs and HOW to solve it. The belief that all dogs learn the same is wrong. Dogs learn differently and so do people. A good dog trainer does not provide cookie-cutter dog training. Instead, they have different techniques to help every dog (and dog owner) succeed. They are open to new ideas (even if they don't follow them at first). This is an important aspect of the job and one we need to keep in mind throughout our career. Thank you for Grunge.com for today's trivia question and lesson. Often times we attempt to fix an annoying problem with our dog, but end up creating a larger problem. Once a dog behaves a certain way (example: jumping on guests, begging from the dinner table, stealing from counters) can we change that behavior? The short answer is yes. We had the right to mourn her. So today, we have listed some hurtful comments mourning pet owners hear. We have also provided alternate responses people can use when comforting a pet owner who recently lost their four-legged fur baby. ISCDT.com

Today's episode teaches dog handlers how to teach new commands and behaviors using the shaping technique. The Shaping process allows us to teach dogs new commands/behaviors by breaking the behavior down into small steps. When the dog learns one step, another is added, until the full behavior is understood. Shaping engages the dog because rewards are given throughout the learning process. Marker training is a simple way to communicate to your dog which behavior you desire. Charging the mark teaches your dog to understand that a sound or signal means that a treat is coming. Once the marker is charged, meaning the dog understands the technique, we use it to teach commands and new behaviors through training. In this episode we explain how to charge the clicker and also the verbal marker. We use the word "yes" as our verbal marker. You can choose any word your prefer. While we did not discuss marker words for deaf dogs, we want you to know that the same rules apply. The only difference is that visual markers are used rather than sound markers. Some examples of visual markers are hand signal (thumbs up), vibration collar or light. The written version on this topic, along with supporting video, is available at https://iscdt.com/charging-the-mark-in-dog-training/
