In this insightful episode of the USA Dog Behavior Podcast, certified dog behavior consultant and behaviorist Scott Sheaffer delves into the complex topic of canine aggression. He explains that aggression in dogs often stems from fear rather than inherent hostility, serving as a defensive mechanism to create distance from perceived threats. Sheaffer distinguishes between reactivity and aggression, highlighting how reactive behaviors like barking or lunging can escalate into aggression, especially when dogs feel cornered or threatened. Key factors contributing to fear-based aggression—such as lack of socialization, past trauma, genetics, and medical issues—are explored, offering listeners a deeper understanding of their dog's behavior.Sheaffer also shares practical strategies for addressing aggression, including desensitization, counter-conditioning, and professional training. Emphasizing the importance of patience and proper intervention, he reassures owners that many dogs can overcome these challenges with the right approach.Subscribe for more bite-sized episodes and visit USADogBehavior.com for additional resources!Find us at USADogBehavior.com.Follow us on Facebook.DisclaimerIf your dog is aggressive toward humans, consult an experienced, certified canine behavior consultant immediately and ensure your dog cannot harm anyone. In an Idiots first, the guys take on a three part episode, covering a very breviated history of wolves becoming dogs, then how different breeds came about, going into breeds that have gone extinct over the years or were rolled into other breeds, and then concluding with a discussion about bringing one breed, the French Bulldog, away from the brink of extinction. Welcome to part 2. This week the Idiots talk about breeds going extinct, but also dabble in how some could be saved or became other breeds. They discuss what makes a breed a breed, and some other stuff. Idk. I was too busy looking things up for them.
This week we are addressing some of the complexities of dog behavior. Often, we are told things like ears pinned back or hackles up mean aggression, and while this may be true for some dogs it is not true for all dogs. Often dogs will raise their hackles due to excitement, surprise, or a number of other reasons. While there are guidelines on what a behavior might normally mean, each dog is an individual with individual nuances. We'll share examples of why watching the whole dog becomes important as well as why interpreting behavior on an individual basis is so important. Don't forget to review, subscribe, and share! Part 1 is the discussion of wolves, specifically a breed of wolf that no longer is on this planet, most likely because it assimilated quietly into modern dogs. They talk of how dogs spread throughout the world, the cause of them joining human ranks, why a symbiotic relationship was so important it came to what we have today, and discuss other things, like ring evolution (editors note, Cory talks about birds on Darwin Island and erroneously refers to them as wrens, but they were actually finches) and selective breeding for working needs.

Visit us at shapedbydog.com Recently, dog training advocate Zak George asked me about crossover dog trainers, and framed the question in such a different way that it inspired replying with a podcast episode. When I crossed over from balanced training to reinforcement based training in 1996, many people asked me why and told me it would not work. I'm sharing my start in dog training, pivotal moments, people and dogs that led me to change my approach, what I learned about myself along the way, and the reasons I never went back. In this episode, you'll hear: • About my transition to becoming a crossover dog trainer. • The question from Zak George that inspired this episode. • When I decided to leave balanced training behind. • What I learned from my terrier puppy, Shelby. • The book that changed my thinking - Don't Shoot the Dog! by Karen Pryor. • When I first saw true autonomy in dog training and how choice transformed my approach. • About my "Shaping Badly" era. • How learning from Bob and Marian Bailey helped me refine my training with clarity and intention. • The shift to shaping with success. • Why judgment holds trainers back. • That change is possible. • Reasons trainers resist crossing over to a positive reinforcement approach. • A special offer for podcast listeners who want to be coached by me and my team. Text Me Your QuestionsJumping behavior in dogs is completely manageable through positive reinforcement techniques rather than punishment-based methods that cause fear, pain, or intimidation. Using differential reinforcement, you can teach your dog to sit for greetings instead of jumping, creating a lasting behavior change that preserves your relationship.• Dogs jump to meet face-to-face and because we've accidentally reinforced this behavior• Jumping continues when we give attention (positive or negative) as a response• Four main causes: face-to-face greeting, attention-seeking, poor self-regulation, and anxiety• Traditional punishment methods damage trust and your relationship with your dog• Teach your dog to sit when approaching from 1-2 feet away and reward generously• Start with low distractions and gradually increase difficulty as your dog succeeds• Turn away immediately if your dog jumps, removing all attention• Use management tools like leashes and gates during the training process• Practice with guests using the same approach-and-sit technique• Any behavior can be taught or eliminated using positive reinforcementCheck out my website at dogbehaviorist.com for my article on how to stop dogs from jumping, along with about 100 other articles on dog behavior.Support the showIf you need professional help please visit my Dog Behaviorist website.Go here for Free Dog Training Articles

Welcome!First off! I apologize for the dead air space, I am using a different recording platform that apparently does not like my taste in music :-) And, as you cat lovers can relate to, I had to attend to my cat's needs. :-) This episode explores the term "Treat Motivated" referencing common scientific studies to determine what this really means and if the focus on treat motivation means the study is missing some very important information about our dogs!Secondly, I use the example of a client of a student in the CCBT Diploma Program at the Institute of Canine Psychotherapy to discuss the challenges in using Conditioning Methods with dogs that are not "treat motivated"And, finally, is "treat motivated" an advantage when adopting a dog?Be sure to check out www.instituteofcaninepsychotherapy.com for info! Visit us at shapedbydog.com Counter Surfing and other naughty dog behavior problems can feel unsolvable, but they don't have to be! I'm sharing an easy 3-step formula every dog owner needs to know for what to do. The challenges any one of us could have with our dogs will vary with our dog's age and experiences. But no matter if we have a puppy, rescue dog, or a dog who has been in our family for years, the MRI approach can be applied to any problem that needs to be solved.
