How to Split a Toaster: A divorce podcast about saving your relationships
De-escalating High-Conflict Divorce: A Rabbi's Perspective on Finding PeaceRabbi Avi Kahan joins Seth Nelson and Pete Wright to explore how de-escalation techniques and cultural sensitivity can help families reach sustainable resolutions during divorce. As a mediator handling complex religious and cultural divorce cases, Rabbi Kahan brings unique insights into managing high-conflict situations and helping couples transition from being spouses to successful co-parents.The conversation delves deep into how fear and conflict often mask deeper emotional struggles during divorce. Seth and Pete explore with Rabbi Kahan how the legal system's focus on "fairness" can sometimes escalate tensions, while religious and cultural perspectives might offer alternative paths to resolution. They discuss how divorce doesn't actually separate parents—it unifies them in a new way as co-parents, requiring them to articulate a new future together for their children's sake.Questions we answer in this episode:How can you de-escalate high-conflict divorce situations? What role does "fairness" really play in divorce proceedings? How can religious perspectives help in understanding divorce as transformation rather than failure?Key Takeaways:Focus on living your life, not your divorce—don't let temporary legal proceedings define your actionsDe-escalation often requires helping both parties want the divorce, not just need itCourt litigation can force parents to suppress their authentic selves, potentially harming childrenThe episode offers valuable insights for anyone navigating a contentious divorce, especially those dealing with cultural or religious complexities. Rabbi Kahan's perspective on viewing divorce as a unifying rather than separating force provides a fresh framework for approaching this challenging life transition. In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton tackle one of the most critical challenges faced by law enforcement officers: decompressing after a high-stress shift (Amazon Affiliate). The demands of the job don't end when the shift is over, and carrying the weight of the day home can take a toll on mental health, relationships, and overall well-being. You'll learn five practical strategies to transition from the intensity of work to home life, allowing you to mentally and emotionally “switch off” and focus on personal restoration and family connection. Why Decompression is Crucial for First Responders: Understand how the high-stress nature of law enforcement impacts your mental health and relationships, and why actively transitioning out of “work mode” is essential. Five Practical Examples and Remedies for Decompression: 1. Create a Transition Ritual: Example: Develop a post-shift routine, such as listening to calming music or an uplifting podcast on your drive home. Why It's Beneficial: Establishing a ritual signals to your brain that it's time to shift gears and leave work stress behind. 2. Physical Activity as a Stress Release: Example: Go for a run, hit the gym, or do yoga immediately after work to channel pent-up tension into physical movement. Why It's Beneficial: Exercise releases endorphins, reduces cortisol levels, and helps clear your mind after a demanding day. 3. Change Out of Your Uniform Promptly: Example: As soon as you get home, swap your uniform for comfortable, casual clothes. Why It's Beneficial: Physically removing the uniform creates a mental boundary between work and home life. 4. Communicate with Your Partner: Example: Take five minutes to share highlights or challenges of your day with your partner, then agree to shift the focus to family time. Why It's Beneficial: Sharing helps release emotional weight, while setting limits prevents the day's stress from dominating your evening. 5. Practice Mindfulness or Meditation: Example: Spend 10 minutes doing a breathing exercise or using a meditation app like Calm or Headspace. Why It's Beneficial: Mindfulness helps ground you in the present moment, reducing anxiety and improving emotional control. How to Separate Work from Home Life: Learn how setting boundaries between work and personal life can help you recharge emotionally and physically. The Role of Family Support: Discover how involving your family in your decompression routine can strengthen your relationships and create a healthier home environment. Long-Term Benefits of a Decompression Routine: Understand how consistent decompression habits lead to improved mental health, better job performance, and a stronger connection to your loved ones. Why This Matters: The stress of law enforcement doesn't have to follow you home. Developing intentional decompression habits can help you manage stress, improve relationships, and maintain a sense of balance. By focusing on these practical strategies, you can ensure that when the badge comes off, you're truly able to rest, recover, and reconnect. Listen now to learn how to switch off after a high-stress shift and create a healthier work-life balance! GAA President Larry McCarthy Reflects on His Tenure in “The Game on Sunday” Podcast+ Best job of my life+ Cork, covid & Croke Park+ The split season+ GAA GO+ The future of hurling+ Decompressing & returning to collegeIn a revealing episode of “The Game on Sunday” podcast hosted by Michael Lyster, GAA President Larry McCarthy shared profound insights into his presidency, addressing key challenges and future prospects of Gaelic games. Joined by Tomas Mulcahy, the trio delved into various topics, including the state of hurling, player welfare, and the integration of non-nationals into Gaelic games.+ A Term Defined by COVID-19 and Broadcasting EvolutionLarry McCarthy's presidency coincided with the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflecting on this period, he noted, “It was very difficult the first couple of months,” contrasting his role in reopening games with his predecessor's role in their closure. McCarthy also highlighted the importance of GAA GO, the organization's broadcasting service, in ensuring game access when traditional broadcasters opted out.+ Addressing the Cost of Running County TeamsTomas Mulcahy raised concerns about the escalating costs of running county teams, a topic that has stirred considerable debate in GAA circles. Responding, McCarthy emphasized county autonomy in financial decisions: “The decision is made to spend that money is at that local level… if you can't afford it, you can't afford it.”+ The Future of Hurling and Integration EffortsDiscussing hurling, McCarthy detailed efforts to expand the sport in less dominant regions, citing the South Ulster Junior Developmental Hurling League as a success story. On integrating non-nationals, McCarthy believed that understanding Ireland entails engaging with GAA, though he acknowledged soccer's dominance among newcomers.+ Personal Reflections and Advice to SuccessorAs McCarthy nears the end of his term, he offered simple advice to his successor, Jarlath Burns: “Enjoy it… Embrace it.” McCarthy plans to return to his academic role in the United States but remains open to future GAA involvement. On this one we're calling into Coast to Coast AM, rendering Jess a surly dickhead, accusing town guys of being creeps, reliving Annabelle's death, watching Leknaat have a stroke, learning that kids shouldn't kill people, abandoning ship with Nanami, leaving shit in the hotel room, allowing zombies to engulf dirt towns, living for true meaning and promises, killing off a Star of Destiny, slapping the shit out of Riou, retreating to a log cabin, acting like we never did our dumb selfish bullshit, demanding bath, and pretending like all of this never happened. We discover that we have very different ideas about what it means to decompress, from when that process should begin to how it should end. Should decompression be energizing after a long day, or should it help us unwind? We debate what makes for a good decompression album and make it through multiple genres along the way. I remember listening to "The 1619 Project" podcast during the pandemic and being enamored with the quality of storytelling and with the depth of story. I had never heard our history told with such specificity and care. So when I found out Hulu and The Onyx Collective were adapting "The 1619 Project" for television, I knew I would watch. So I am delighted to have one of the director's and producer's, Naimah Jabali-Nash, Here's what we're talking about: The historical background of "The 1619 Project" and its importance How the opportunity to direct "The 1619 Project" happened How they decided on the visual direction for her episode Her experience as a first-time director How they adapted the book, essays and podcast into a TV series Why she allows her curiosity to dictate the projects she works on How she decompresses after engaging with the weight of these stories The impact of the stories shared in "The 1619 Project" "The 1619 Project" is a history lesson unlike any lesson we've had before.
This week on the Uncharted Podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and practice manager Stephanie Goss are answering a question from the mailbag being asked by one practice leader who has a problem with gossip and negativity on the team. They have been facing it head on and working on their culture. And they are still wondering how to help themselves and the team balance the "need" to talk about a situation and/or interaction that impacted you while still following the expectation that there is no gossiping allowed. How do you walk the line between the "need" to vent/decompress and commiseration/gossiping. This one is spicy, let's get into this... This week's episode is definitely a different subject matter than what we normally do but we thought it was an important episode topic. We get asked a lot how we meditate? What music do we use? And in this episode we dive into that. Decompressing after investigating is important, at least for us. In this episode we dive into a music genre that has incorporated an element of the paranormal into the lyrics and themes as well as what we use to meditate. Meditating isn't always the easiest and we're firm believers that even people that don't have abilities will find some relief in meditating and calming their mind. In this episode we troubleshoot some of our own issues we had with traditional meditation music and how we've found foolproof ways to get into that meditative state. This episode is definitely a lighter episode and more of a conversation. Our episodes riding into March are definitely on some of the darker and more elaborate side of the paranormal, but we thought this would be a good time to just talk about this. So you're feeling unmotivated: it's hard to get anything done let alone get out of bed, and the voice in your head is telling you “get your butt up,” “stop wasting your precious time,” “why are you sleeping in AGAIN”… what do you do?? This week's episode is a part two to motivation (check out eps. 28 for part one, one of our most popular episodes in 2022!). The dynamic duo share how their approach to motivation has changed over time and the hacks they've used to help maintain more consistent energy levels. As humans, it's easy for us to compartmentalize things into “good or bad”, “wrong or right”, “all or nothing.” For example: Being productive, pushing yourself, striving to be the best = good Lacking motivation, wasting time, staying in bed = bad But these labels aren't true, life isn't black and white, and living this way is not sustainable in the long run. Tune in to find out how they have learned to be more gentle with themselves through embracing periods of low energy, and how they have turned to curiosity and hacking habits to help spark motivation in their daily lives. We appreciate all of you for being here! ❤️ Say hello, give us feedback, or share any topics/questions you'd like to hear in future episodes.
