Welcoming a new baby into the family transforms everyone's lives—not just the parents. But what's your role as a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or sibling when that precious bundle arrives? Postpartum doula Foster Wilson guides us through this delicate family transition with wisdom that bridges generations.Foster reveals that the most valuable contribution family members can make isn't what most expect. "Being of service in these early times helps build the bond with your child as they are transforming from woman to mother," she explains. "The bonding with your grandchild will certainly come, but those early weeks it's so important for mom to have her bonding with her child."This conversation tackles the practical realities of modern family support systems. With families often separated by distance and grandparents working longer, Foster offers strategies for supporting new parents both in-person and from afar. She emphasizes understanding your personal strengths—whether cooking nutrient-dense meals, providing emotional support, or handling household tasks—and using them to genuinely serve the new family.Foster encourages a mindset shift: while you may have experience with childbirth and parenting, your child is experiencing this for the first time. Being curious about their approach rather than imposing your own views creates space for their parenting journey. As she beautifully puts it, we need to create "circles of care" where the baby is at the center, the parents surround the baby, and extended family supports them all.Whether you're preparing to welcome a grandchild or supporting a sibling through new parenthood, this episode offers invaluable guidance for nurturing not just the new baby, but the transforming family as a whole. Subscribe, like and share to help other families discover this wisdom!Bio Foster Wilson is a poet, author, and postpartum doula whose work bridges creativity, care, and connection. Her debut poetry collection, Afternoon Abundance: Poetry for Wild Souls, explores identity, spirituality, and the transformative journey of motherhood. Alright friends, in this episode I got to sit down with the amazing Larry Hagner from The Dad Edge—and let me tell you, this conversation was so good. We talked all things parenting—the highs, the lows, the “did that just happen?” moments—and how building strong communities (for both moms and dads) is absolutely essential. We also got into the nitty gritty of personal growth in relationships—like, how it's way more powerful to lead by example than to try and “coach” your partner. Larry shared the journey that led him to create his community for dads, and I opened up about the magic—and sometimes madness—inside women's circles. We chatted about the importance of emotional intelligence, why encouragement always beats nagging, and how choosing your “hard” is what really leads to connection and fulfillment. It's honest, it's real, and I promise you'll walk away with something to think about. "Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward." – Psalm 127:3Children are a precious gift from God—a reward and a heritage to be cherished. With the incredible joy of welcoming a newborn also comes great responsibility, especially in managing finances wisely. To help new parents navigate this season, here's a New Baby Financial Checklist to ensure you're covering all the essential financial bases.1. Add Your Newborn to Your Health InsuranceIn the whirlwind of 2 AM feedings and endless diaper changes, don't let updating your health insurance slip through the cracks. Most plans allow a 30-day window after birth to add your baby to your policy. While you're at it, double-check that your plan covers:Pediatric careVaccinationsEmergency hospital visitsThankfully, welcoming a new baby qualifies as a “life event,” meaning you can make necessary adjustments to your plan.2. Secure Life Insurance CoverageLife insurance isn't for the baby—it's for you. Ensure you have a term life policy that provides at least 10 times the primary breadwinner's salary in coverage.Don't overlook the caregiving spouse, either! If something were to happen to them, the cost of childcare could be significant. Securing life insurance ensures financial stability for your growing family.3. Update Your BudgetIt's time to add a “Baby” category to your budget. When estimating how much to allocate, consider these new expenses:Diapers and wipesBaby clothes (that seem to shrink overnight!)Baby food and formulaMedical expensesThese costs add up quickly. You may need to adjust other budget categories to stay on track, but planning ahead will reduce financial stress down the road.4. Create or Update Your WillA will isn't just about distributing assets—it's about securing your child's future. One of the most critical decisions in your will is naming a guardian for your child in case both parents pass away. While this can be a difficult decision, it's essential to have a plan in place. Pray for wisdom and choose someone who shares your values and would provide loving care if the unthinkable happens.Proverbs 13:22 reminds us: “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children…” This inheritance isn't just financial—it includes faith, wisdom, and values that shape their future.5. Build or Strengthen Your Emergency FundIf you don't already have an emergency fund, now is the time to start. Aim for 3 to 6 months' worth of living expenses in savings.A new baby comes with many surprise costs, from medical bills to strollers that cost more than you expected. If a financial emergency—like a job loss—were to happen, having this cushion would be a huge blessing.6. Update Your TaxesWith the arrival of your baby, your tax situation changes:Child Tax Credit—You can claim your baby as a dependent on your tax return, which may qualify you for a $2,000 tax credit.Adjust Your W-4—Update your W-4 form at work to ensure your withholding reflects your new family size. You may be able to withhold less, increasing your take-home pay.7. Start an Education Savings FundIt may feel early, but saving for your child's education now can set them up for success. A 529 plan is a great option—it can be used for:Private K-12 tuitionVocational or technical trainingCollege education529 plans also offer tax-free growth on investments used for qualified educational expenses. Bonus: Recent tax law changes now allow unused 529 funds to be rolled into a child's Roth IRA (up to $35,000), making them even more beneficial!8. Freeze Your Child's CreditIdentity theft isn't just an adult problem—it can happen to children, too. If you've applied for a Social Security number for your baby, consider placing a credit freeze with the three major credit bureaus. This prevents fraudsters from opening accounts in your child's name, protecting their financial future.Welcoming a new baby is an incredible blessing, but it also comes with financial adjustments. By taking these steps, you can ensure a secure and stable future for your family.Have you checked off all the items on this list? Start today and take one step at a time—you've got this!On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:Can you recommend a burial insurance of any kind?I recently retired at 70 and have money in a 401(k) that I'm unsure how to handle. My wife keeps saying we should invest in gold, but I don't know much about the stock market. Should I get a personal advisor to help me reinvest this money?I'm a federal government retiree with a pension. I'm 61 years old and have no debt besides my house payment. I'm not currently investing in anything. What would you recommend as an investment path for someone in my retirement situation? We have a 22-year-old adult daughter who lives with us. She is only responsible for paying her car insurance. We would like to know if it's biblical to start charging her rent to live with us and, if so, how we should determine the right dollar amount.Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly MagazineSound Mind InvestingList of Faith-Based Investment FundsWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money (Pre-Order)Look At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. If you're pregnant and have a velcro dog who follows you everywhere, panics when you leave the room, or constantly needs to be touching you, you're not alone. Many dogs form deep attachments to their pregnant owner, but this can become a challenge once the baby arrives. After all, you'll need to sleep, feed, and care for your newborn without a dog glued to your side.In today's episode, we'll talk about why some dogs become hyper-attached during pregnancy, the potential risks this can create once the baby arrives, and—most importantly—how you can start preparing your velcro dog now so that they feel safe, secure, and comfortable being separated from you when needed. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Released hostages Sagui Dekel-Chen, Sasha Troufanov and Iair Horn crossed back into Israel this morning after being paraded on a stage in southern Gaza in a propaganda-filled release ceremony by the Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror groups after 498 days in captivity. Fabian fills us in on the ceremony and their health status. We learn about how the IDF has handled the heightened tensions in the Gaza Strip this past week and its readiness to return to war-footing. In a meeting on Friday morning, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi apologized to four recently released hostage soldiers for their warnings not being treated seriously before the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, as well as for their long captivity. Halevi met with Agam Berger, Liri Albag, Naama Levy and Karina Ariev, who were released from Hamas captivity after some 15 months. We learn what else was leaked from the meeting. The outgoing deputy commander of UNIFIL was injured Friday, the international peacekeeping force said, after a convoy taking troops to the Beirut airport was attacked amid pro-Hezbollah demonstrations in the area. This occurred as the IDF is reluctantly readying a drawdown from Lebanon on February 18 -- which may or may not be its final withdrawal of troops, reports Fabian. Finally, we hear updates on the ongoing counter-terrorism operation in the West Bank and learn how much security cooperation there is with the Palestinian Authority for it. Please see today's ongoing live blog for more updates. Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts.
