In today's episode, we are honored to be joined with Tomeka from Jace's Journey. Tomeka is from Kenansville, a small town in Eastern North Carolina, where everyone is family and everyone knows someone who knows someone who is related to someone. In 2017, She set out to find decent healthcare for her pregnancy with her son Jace. This journey would set her stranded in uncharted territory. Losing Jace caused Tomeka to re-examine the facts of their medical diagnosis to see what happened, what needed to change, and what could be done to prevent this from happening to anyone ever again. The tragic, yet preventable death of Jace and almost losing her life in the process birthed an unbridled passion and purpose to spread awareness and to be a catalyst for change as it relates to racial and implicit biases faced by African American women and infants on a daily basis. Tomeka's ambition for Jace's Journey, a nonprofit organization she co-founded in 2019 with her husband Brandon and serves as Executive Director, is to work towards eliminating the disparities in maternal and infant health through education, advocacy and community engagement. If she can save at least one life on her quest to change the hearts and minds of the people responsible for providing African American mothers proper healthcare, she will have made an impact. She intends to save many more lives than that. It's her promise to all the mothers and children out there and to the one that made this all possible, Jace Alexander Isaac. Jodi Drake is a survivor of Postpartum OCD/Anxiety. After recovering from this condition, it was her mission to help other women like herself, who have struggled with various perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD's). Throughout her graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, she researched perinatal mental health and based several of her projects on the topic. This culmination of work led her to complete her graduate thesis on PMAD's, entitled, “Lifting the Fog: Provider Screening Behaviors and New Mothers' Knowledge of Perinatal Mood Disorders.” Jodi's journey as a volunteer with Postpartum Support International – Indiana Chapter began on December of 2017. She has assisted and been a co-leader for PSI's “Climb out of The Darkness” event in 2018 and 2019. To expand her knowledge, Jodi completed two courses within PSI's “Components of Care series,” which will eventually lead to a PMH-C certification. In October of 2019, she was grateful to be selected as one of the Peer Support Coordinators in Indiana. Jodi is extremely passionate about this role, as it entails personal communication with parents who are struggling and need resources (i. e. healthcare prescribers, therapists, support groups, and books/printed materials). There is much more work that needs to be done in the area of perinatal mental health, and Jodi will continue to pursue that mission. I See You, Mama and change-makers, survivors, advocates and professionals! Welcome to another episode of the I See You Mama! Podcast all about maternal mental health! Today we welcome powerhouse mama, Maureen Fura! Maureen has spent the last 10 years building key relationships with policymakers, advocates, leaders, survivors, scientists, researchers, providers, and families to close the gaps in Maternal Mental Health care. She is a survivor of a maternal mental health disorder that came on when she was pregnant in 2008. Maureen experienced first-hand the gaps in Maternal Mental Health care when she sought treatment from 29 different providers before she got the help she needed. She couldn't help but question, does this happen to other women? This led her to create the first documentary film exposing the gaps in MMH care in the U.S. Since its release in 2015, the award-winning film ‘Dark Side of the Full Moon' has been used as a catalyst around the country ranging from State Legislators, hospitals, universities, public health departments, and community organizations to ignite a movement of providing better mental health care to women during their pregnancy and postpartum period. Maureen was also one of the founding members of the National Coalition for Maternal Mental Health (NCMMH). Maureen was awarded their Advocate of the Year in 2017 for her efforts in bringing advocates to Washington D.C from around the country to lobby for policy changes. Through NCMMH, the Moving Out of the Shadows Act and its subsequent funding was realized. Maureen also spearheaded the first national social media awareness campaign for Maternal Mental Health (MMH Week), which takes place the first week of May every year. She led MMH Week for 4 years, reaching over 10 million. She also worked on first World MMH Day with leaders from the UK, Spain, Turkey, South Africa, France, and Canada. She worked closely with 2020Mom, one of the leading MMH organizations, before starting MomsWell with Melissa. She continues to be a Postpartum Support International Coordinator in Miami, Florida where she works to connect local moms to support. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/weseeyoumama/support
