In recognition of Maternal Mental Health Month I am re-sharing this 2023 conversation with the founders of The Motherhood Center in NYC. With Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADS) being the #1 complication associated with birth in the US and the #2 cause of maternal mortality, this remains a critical conversation. It's not just you. You're not crazy. You're not a bad mom. You're not alone. These are words and deep beliefs that resonate through and form the backbone of today's guests, Catherine Birndorf, MD, and Paige Bellenbaum, LMSW. Catherine and Paige are dedicated to changing the perinatal mental health terrain, and they do it through The Motherhood Center, a place of radical acceptance, nurturance, and individual and group support. On today's episode, we pull back the curtain on motherhood and redefine what is considered "normal" and "typical". With PMADs (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders) being the #1 complication associated with birth and the #2 cause of maternal mortality, this is a critical conversation. On today's episode, we unpack why it's so important that we talk more about these conditions, how to do your best to prevent PMADs, and what to do if you or someone you love has symptoms. Aviva, Paige, and Catherine discuss: The definition of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADS) and the different diagnoses that fall under the PMAD umbrella What PMAD taboos still exist today, why this needs to change, and how Roe v. Wade affects these taboos Paige and Catherine's personal stories with perinatal mood disorders and what brought them to the point of specializing in PMADS and opening the motherhood center The kinds of physical and psychological feelings and symptoms associated with PMADs and signs birthing people and their providers should watch out for Why we need to move in the direction of making it mandatory for OB-GYNs, midwives, pediatricians, and any providers who come in contact with newer expecting mothers to begin educating their patients about PMADS and screening for symptoms The effects of the pandemic, social isolation, and potential cultural contributors on PMADS The role of medication and psychotherapy in treating conditions For more information or to reach out visit themotherhoodcenter.com or call (212) 335-0034. Let's get political folks! As mental health overall has gotten more attention in the media over the last 4 years, so has the very important topic of PMADs, or Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. After the latest CDC findings on the alarming maternal mortality rate, many facets of government are starting to pay attention to mothers and birthing individuals and the toll that pregnancy and child-rearing can take on their mental health.Today, we have a returning guest on the show, Paige Bellenbaum, LCSW. Paige is the Founding Director and Chief External Relations Officer at The Motherhood Center of New York. She discusses the baby steps that are being taken to protect and elevate mothers in NY and America at large, although she points out that it is just a drop in the ocean of change that is required to truly support mothers in this country. She touches on some new research and statistics that have shockingly helped change the narrative on maternal support. We discuss the highly divisive and high-tension topics surrounding motherhood and child care in America during a very heated election year. For 20 years, Paige worked in the non-profit sector, holding senior leadership positions at Hamilton Family Center Homeless Shelter, The Partnership for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity, and Settlement Housing Fund. She has worked in the field of public policy, advocacy, community organizing and direct practice with disadvantaged communities including homeless families and incarcerated young adults and has held several appointed and elected political positions including the District Leader of Brooklyn's 52nd Assembly District. After her first child was born, Paige suffered from severe postpartum depression and anxiety that nearly ended her life. However, once she began to heal, she became committed to fighting for PMAD education, screening, and treatment so that no more women would have to suffer silently. She drafted legislation in New York State championed by State Senator Liz Krueger, mandating hospitals to provide education on PMADs and strongly encouraging screening of all new and expecting mothers. This bill was signed into law in 2014. She has continued to be an outspoken maternal mental health advocate and clinician and uses her story as a tool for change. Paige works closely with multiple New York City agencies on maternal mental health best practice and policy, including the NYPD, DOHMH's Maternal Hospital Quality Improvement Network, and the Nurse Family Partnership, and the Administration for Children's Services. She was a member of the NYC Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee and currently sits on the NYS Maternal Mental Health Working Group. She has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, NPR, PBS Newshour, Fortune, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.Connect with her at:themotherhoodcenter.com

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) are mental health conditions that can occur during pregnancy or within a year after delivery. Many families feel afraid to talk about PMAD, but we want families to know that they are not alone, it's not anyone's fault, and with support, things will get better. In this episode, host Jessica Stewart Gonzalez talks with Rachel Flater, the Postpartum Support International Support Coordinator, about differentiating normal feelings from disorders and how to support people with perinatal mood disorders.Host:Jessica Stewart-Gonzalez is the Chief of the Office of Children's Health at the Arizona Department of Health Services. She is married, has two young children, and loves reading (anything except parenting books!) and watching movies and TV. She loves to spend time with her kids (when they aren't driving her crazy) and celebrating all of their little, and big, accomplishments. Jessica has been in the field of family and child development for over 20 years, working towards normalizing the hard work of parenting and making it easier to ask the hard questions.Links: Strong Families AZHost: Jessica Stewart-GonzalezGuest: Rachel FlaterPostpartum Support International: Helpline and over 25 FREE support groups under the Get Help tabArizona Perinatal Psychiatry Access Line: free service for medication providersNational Maternal Mental Health Hotline

Those who navigate the intersection of DID and eating disorders face unique challenges in finding care for themselves. It is challenging enough to find care for one or the other, never mind when they coexist! She takes us through how she came to this specialty area, what she wishes she knew earlier, the challenges she regularly runs into and what she wishes other therapists knew, including red flags for dissociation that often get missed. Whether you are someone living with the condition or a therapist working with this population, you'll find valuable nuggets in all that Angela graciously shares with us. Trigger Warning: This episode involves topics related to postpartum psychosis, suicide, and infanticide. In this eye-opening conversation, one mother is sharing her raw and unfiltered story of navigating a postpartum psychosis diagnosis, shedding light on this often misunderstood and stigmatized perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. After the birth of her second son, Chelsea battled with intense challenges with postpartum depression, which eventually snowballed into postpartum psychosis. As we delve into Chelsea's story, we aim to foster a space of empathy, understanding, and support. I hope her openness invites you to connect with the human side of maternal mental health struggles, acknowledging that each tale contributes to the larger call to action for early intervention and better support for women in healthcare. Your go-to Purple Rabbit, Neoborn Caveman, opens his tea-house conversation first with how artificial light at night can mess up our sleep and health, and how the line between the virtual and real worlds is getting blurry. There is a strong opinion about the downsides of owning nothing, too. Then NC highlights the importance of building strong communities and small circles to fight against the negative effects of modern trends. He also discusses how overprotective parenting and having fewer children later in life can lead to societal challenges and hinder the development of resilience and independence in children. After all, parents need to take responsibility for their children's well-being, set boundaries, and be present in their lives.Neoborn also suggests disconnecting from phones and technology before bed to improve sleep quality and reduce distractions - he's been doing that for years and still alive! In an important segment NC brings up the tragic case of Bronson Bathersby to highlight the need for better support systems and vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals. We need to look after each other and be aware of our surroundings to prevent harm and create a more connected society. As usual, Neoborn Caveman shares his appreciation for emotional music and ends the conversation on a lighter note with humor. Yes, the Battle of Jokes. This episode also features an Irish folklore segment by pMad and live reviews of the songs of Bonnie and the Jets and pMad.Free speech marinated in comedy.Supporting Purple Rabbits! ............................ After struggling with severe Postpartum Depression following the birth of her daughter, Diana sought medical treatment but because this was in the early 90's, no one really knew what to do. Three long years later, she was given an accurate diagnosis, began the road to recovery, and has dedicated her career to helping women navigate similar terrain. She's been in the field of Women's Reproductive Mental Health for almost 30 years. Diana has had many roles- she is the former President of Postpartum Support International, has a private practice assessing, diagnosing and treating women around the childbearing years and, for 20 years has served as an internationally esteemed forensic expert witness in the criminal justice system. She's a triple threat when it comes to perinatal mental health: an expert in the field, an empathetic PMAD survivor who believes in the power of story, and a fierce advocate for justice and stigma reduction when it comes to perinatal mental illness . Oh, and she's a new grandma to twins! Hearing her talk about the healing, redemption and joy that's come along with grandma-hood is a treat.*Note: we do discuss some of Diana's cases in detail and some of the stories are difficult to hear. When untreated, PMAD's can have devastating consequences but talking about these things can help reduce stigma and raise awareness which is so important.Show Notes:Postpartum Support International (PSI)Research Articles regarding Postpartum Psychosis Addition to DSM.For statewide resources please visit the Linking Infants and Families to Supports athttps://hmhb-lifts.org/
Once again, Neoborn Caveman and Andia have a high-octane episode in which they talk about misheard quotes and sayings, the nature of language and perception, chasing happiness, quantum computing, film reviews, and cultural differences. The Two Purple Rabbits discuss the importance of connection and being anti-fragile, as well as the role of parental figures and role models. They also touch on social issues such as political engagement and simplification in films. You know, thinking critically and embracing diversity are great traits! Neoborn and Andia go on with various societal issues and the factors contributing to crime and violence. They explore the impact of sociopathy and antisocial behavior, highlighting the need for understanding and addressing these issues. Then, their open tea-house conversation delves into the role of schools in preventing crime and the importance of taking responsibility in society. You know, there is a difference between indoctrination and education! Open discussions and well-informed opinions are always better than any propaganda... oh yeah, their Battle of Jokes is back!We also appreciate some good music, like Sisters by pMad.Have you checked out our Patreon page? It's full of rarities and coolness: https://www.patreon.com/NeobornAndAndiaHumanShow Here are a few takeaways from this episode:Misheard quotes and sayings are common and can lead to humorous misunderstandings.Language and perception are closely linked, and different languages can shape our understanding of the world.Chasing happiness may not lead to true fulfillment; instead, doing difficult things and facing challenges can bring greater satisfaction.Cultural differences and diversity should be embraced and celebrated.Simplification in films and storytelling can sometimes detract from the depth and complexity of the original concept.Free speech marinated in comedy.Supporting Purple Rabbits!............................ Before you dive in, I want to let you know that you are NOT failing, you are doing incredible!!I had the honor to speak with Sarah L Smith, she is a mother of 2 girls (4 & 5.5yo) after suffering from PMAD (Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders) that started when she was pregnant with her second daughter, mental health became something very important to her. In the middle of 2020 shortly after her, younger turned 2, she finally felt like she had climbed out from the shells of PMAD and is now a survivor!! Years of therapy helped but more than therapy her mom's community helped. More than many of them she still knows today. She also knows many moms either are not ready for therapy, don't have access to therapy, or just need another mom to support them. After fighting within herself for almost a year she shifted gears in 2022 and launched a new program called Motherhood Imperfect. At Motherhood Imperfect we are talking about all things motherhood-related and how to reclaim who you are outside of being a mom because motherhood is a verb. Outside of Sarah's mom community, learning to put herself first, journaling, affirmations, learning to forgive herself, routines, goal setting, and building her businesses were key to her being able to call herself a PMAD survivor and are all the things that are talked about inside Motherhood Imperfect. Sarah wants you to remember that you don't have to be a perfect mom, but you are the perfect mom for your kids. My guess is you may have heard of the term PMAD, perinatal mood and anxiety disorder? PMAD does cover the whole experience of prenatal, postnatal and beyond. But most of the time when you think of PMAD, you think of what happens in postpartum. Today on Yoga| Birth| Babies, I want to focus on prenatal stress, anxiety and depression. It is really an enormous change in people's lives. A lot of the time people do experience this and may not even recognize it. After all, we often hear that in pregnancy we should be glowing and excited about this change, but there can be enormous stress and anxiety as you understand who you are during this transition. To have this important conversation, I've invited Kayce Hodos. She has spent the majority of her 20 years in mental health, focused on loss and transition. After having her son in 2012, her own coping skills were put to the test when she struggled through a very dark period of postpartum depression. After this experience, her goal is to support parents. Kayce offers very specific coping skills that are universal not just for PMAD's, but anytime you feel overwhelmed. I love practical ideas and I think you're going to get a lot out of this conversation. I'm excited for you to listen to the wonderful information Kayce shares! Every year, about 1 in 5 expecting and new parents experience symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. While most new mothers suffer from mood swings within the first few weeks, some pregnant and postpartum parents have intense feelings of sadness, worry, anger, numbness, or self-doubt that persist for months. Unfortunately, services are seriously lacking for parents in the United States, particularly when it comes to postpartum mental health. Anchor Perinatal Wellness provides unique and specialized mental health programming for pregnant and postpartum people, including a free, walk-in screening clinic, outpatient services and an intensive outpatient program to pregnant and postpartum adults who are struggling with a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD). Anchor was founded by three Latina women who recognized that they shared a passion for expanding mental health services for perinatal people and they opened their program in May of 2022. Today we are joined by two of the founders of Anchor Perinatal, Roxanne Rosenberg, a licensed mental health counselor and Veronica Kemeny, a licensed clinical social worker. Last week, in part one of our conversation with the Anchor team we dove into a discussion of PMADs, lessons we can learn from other countries, and how PMAD's are showing up differently in minority populations. Today in part 2 of our conversation, we dive into what intensive outpatient services look like for those suffering from PMADs, and explore reproductive justice and the role it is playing in Anchor Perinatal's work. Our discussion today included: An exploration of intensive outpatient programs, how it's different, why it's rare in the US What a day in the life of an Intensive Outpatient Program looks like Reproductive Justice defined The first National Maternal Mental Health Task Force and Anchor's role in it Impact on LGBTQ+ communities of recent legislation Thank you to our sponsor: HER Circle Patreon Resources Mentioned in Episode: MAAME PSI International Anchor Perinatal Wellness Sister Song --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/herhealthcollective/support

They discuss the difference between baby blues and PMADs, the various types of PMADs, and the risk factors associated with them. Cheryl emphasizes the importance of reaching out for help and finding a therapist who specializes in perinatal mental health. She also highlights the role of partners in supporting someone experiencing a PMAD.TakeawaysPerinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) can occur during pregnancy and the first year postpartum and include depression, anxiety, and postpartum psychosis.Baby blues typically start around day three or four postpartum and resolve around day 14, while PMADs often peak around month four.Risk factors for PMADs include trauma history, socio-economic instability, personal or family history of anxiety or depression, and the transition into parenthood.Partners play a crucial role in supporting someone with a PMAD by validating their experiences, listening to their concerns, and helping them seek professional help.It is important to reach out for help and find a therapist who specializes in perinatal mental health, even if you don't have a formal diagnosis. Please feel free to reach out to us with any recommendations for show episode ideas. Becoming a grandparent is typically embraced by society as a joyous event filled with all the love and much less of the responsibility that comes with parenthood. However, in reality, the identity shifts that occur when parents become grandparents are complicated, with a mix of highs and lows. And with this so rarely discussed, new grandparents (and new parents) can feel blindsided and struggle to know how to navigate the complexities of this transition. Joining me today to have a full and honest conversation about what it means to become a grandparent, from both a personal and a clinical level, is Licensed Mental Health Counselor and grandmother of 2, Carol Merle- Fishman. This episode is an ideal listen for both parents and grandparents — tackling generational differences, how to understand each other's perspectives, and strategies for approaching complicated family dynamics with a deeper sense of compassion and empathy. What We Talked About: What are some ‘red flags' to watch out for during the reproductive season of life What exactly is a baby brain? How soon and for how long is it possible to experience PMAD (perinatal mood and anxiety disorder)? Perinatal mental health does not only affect the birthing person Suggestions on how to best support a new family What can be done to prevent PMAD? Things to Remember: “People need help and support and that's very real and very normal.” “There are lots of reasons why someone might not notice they have a postpartum mental health condition or they might not have access to help or know that they can get help.” “Non-birthing parents historically haven't been checked in with or tuned in to see how they are doing.” “With any life change, there's an increased stress.” “It's okay if you don't feel okay.” - Dr. Kat Kaeni “You are not alone. Earlier this year, a woman named Lindsay Clancy was charged with the murder of her three children — who were 5 years, 3 years, and 7 months old. Though Clancy never formally received a PMAD diagnosis, her story has ignited conversations about postpartum care in the United States. Apple News In Conversation host Shumita Basu spoke with New Yorker editor Jessica Winter about the mental-health challenges many new birthing parents face — and the lack of support provided to them. This is a preview of that converstion.
