In this episode of Spinal Cast, we shine the spotlight on the 44th Annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games, coming to Minneapolis from July 17-22, 2025. Hosted by the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) and the Department of Veterans Affairs, this event is the largest adaptive sports and rehabilitation competition for U.S. military veterans with disabilities. Our guest is Seth Thomas, President of the Minnesota Chapter of the PVA and a U.S. Navy veteran. Seth shares his powerful story – from his service and injury to his leadership role – and gives us an inside look at what makes these games so special. Over 700 athletes will compete across 20+ events, supported by thousands of volunteers. Participants include veterans with spinal cord injuries, amputations, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological conditions requiring the use of a wheelchair. The Minnesota PVA plays a vital role in veteran advocacy, employment connections, legislation, and community engagement and, of course, providing a network of support and opportunity through sport. If you're in the Minneapolis area, don't miss this inspiring six-day celebration of resilience, camaraderie, and athletic excellence. It's like a mini-Paralympics, complete with Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals – a true showcase of American heroes from every military branch and era. What does it mean to truly find your voice as a preacher? Rev. Dr. Teresa Fry Brown has spent a lifetime exploring that question. A powerhouse in the world of preaching and a trailblazing scholar at Emory's Candler School of Theology, Dr. Fry Brown brings her expertise in homiletics, womanism, and even speech pathology to this conversation on what it really means to find—and own—your authentic preaching voice. In this episode of Transforming Engagement: The Podcast, she joins host Rev. Dr. Seth Thomas to explore the delicate balance between personal authenticity, the needs of listeners, and the nuance of different contexts. How do we cultivate a preaching voice that is both deeply true to ourselves and deeply respectful of the spaces we enter? Dr. Fry Brown shares wisdom on everything from the technical aspects of vocal delivery to the spiritual and emotional demands of preaching through hardship. And yes, we even get into why she preaches with her shoes off. Join us for a practical and deeply inspiring conversation about preaching, presence, and the power of knowing your voice.

Hope isn't just for Easter Sunday—it's a rhythm we're invited to live into every day. But in times like these, how do we hold onto hope—and bring it to our congregations and communities? In the first episode of our new season of Transforming Engagement: the Podcast, host Rev. Dr. Seth Thomas sits down with Dr. Mark Lloyd Taylor, author of So Fill Our Imaginations: The Work and Play of a Year in Preaching, to explore what it truly means to preach hope. Together, they explore the paradox of hope: while we may not always see it, we are called to be it. Dr. Taylor connects this to the Episcopal baptismal covenant, emphasizing commitments to justice, service, and stewardship. A recent addition to the covenant—caring for God's creation—highlights the importance of concrete action in our faith. Dr. Taylor shares how the Godly Play early childhood education method can inspire a more interactive and imaginative approach to preaching. He offers practical ways to invite your congregation into the process—not just through words, but through visuals and the physical space around you. Whether you preach from the pulpit or live your faith in everyday moments, this conversation will inspire you to cultivate attentiveness, deepen your engagement, and bring hope to the communities you serve. About This Season, “Reimagining Preaching”: This season, we're exploring how the church can proclaim the good news in our time by reimagining preaching. Over the last few decades, the world has witnessed a technological revolution to tackle the climate crisis. However, more recently, there has been a growing consensus about the role of nature and nature-based solutions in tackling, not only the Three Planetary Crisis but also various pressing societal issues, such as poverty. The goals of nature-based solutions are to restore, protect and sustainability manage both natural and modified ecosystems to benefit both society and nature. In fact, over a third of the climate mitigation required to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement can be provided by nature-based solutions. Annually, flooding damages worth US $57 billion are averted by mangroves in India, China, the US, Mexico, and Vietnam. In this episode, I interview Seth Thomas, a research assistant at the University of Oxford's Nature-based Solutions Initiative. With projects across Asia, South America, and the UK, the program aims to enhance understanding of the potential of nature-based solutions to address multiple global challenges whilst supporting the health of ecosystems. Additionally, the program aims to involve and respect the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities. In this episode, we discuss the concept of nature-based solutions, their challenges, and their potential. Seth also elaborates on his extensive research work which covers the socioeconomic benefits of the legal wildlife trade and a global review of the large carnivore reintroduction, rewilding, and translocation. Connecticut produced a lot of “firsts” for the new United States. Among them was clock-making. Plymouth, Bristol and Waterbury were the leading clock manufacturing centers in the country for more than a century. While the technology for making clocks was brought here from England, an ingenious advancement by Eli Terry brought a breakthrough approach to mass production that was copied by other businesses as the industrial revolution grew. Terry's pupils included the venerable clock maker Seth Thomas. Terry's activities also spawned the Waterbury firm that created the famous TIMEX watch. Even Mickey Mouse had a role to play in advancing the industry. Hear the story from the Executive Director of the American Clock and Watch Museum in Bristol, Patti Phillipon.

Hi fellow mamas, advocates, survivors and change makers! My name is Kristina Dulaney and this is the I See You, Mama podcast! I'm a Registered Nurse, postpartum psychosis survivor, story teller, avid advocate, founder of a nonprofit Cherished Mom and certified in perinatal mental health! I'm a city girl at heart from Raleigh, NC and moved to NE TN in Jan 2016 with my two beautiful girls and husband to be near extended family. You don't know the village you need when raising children until you bring them home and it's my goal to share with you stories of survival and hope, advocacy efforts/journeys surrounding maternal mental health and tap into the professional world leading the way in maternal mental health throughout our nation. Sharing my story has not only been therapeutic for me but I have truly been able to see lives changed as well as it ignite change on so many levels. I want to feature other survivors and talk about their recovery journeys so other moms know they're not alone. I have a deep desire to speak and connect with advocates and share their successes and how others can do the same. I also want to highlight reproducable and impactful programs throughout our nation so they can spread like wildfire. This podcast is for you to learn about anything and everything to do with maternal mental health. Since my dark and scary experience with postpartum psychosis and knowing very little about perinatal mental health, I want you to be able to learn from guests and/or feel comfortable and empowered to speak up, advocate or get the help you deserve. While I'm a registered nurse, none of my episodes will replace the advice, treatment or recommendations from any medical provider. Sometimes we may discuss heavy topics and appropriate disclaimers will be given to you ahead of time. Other than that, I hope you will join me on March 17th for the launch of my first episode of the I See You, Mama podcast!
