Tyrus Hayes is the Director of Strategic Engagement for Al-Maa'uun, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit whose "mission is to alleviate poverty and oppression within black and communities of color in North Minneapolis and surrounding areas through direct service and advocacy." The Next in Nonprofits Podcast usually focuses on a broad topic of interest to the nonprofit community rather than featuring the story of a single nonprofit. We were approached by Podcasthon to divert from our regular format once a year to lift up the work of a specific mission. We are proud to bring the story of Al-Maa'uun to the podcast! Tyrus joins host Steve Boland to talk about the mission of Al-Maa'uun to meet the "Neighborly Needs" of the communities in North Minneapolis and beyond. The organization has grown from just a few volunteers to over 25 paid employees cooperating with other groups to meet needs. Al-Maa'uun is a 2Gen organization and uses this framework to help build a community response to this work.

The Georgia 2Gen Academy is presented each year by the Georgia Children's Cabinet and facilitated by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia. Twenty-six representatives from state agencies, including DECAL and advocacy groups for children and youth, participated. A graduation ceremony was held recently at the Loudermilk Center in downtown Atlanta for a group of students from state agencies who have spent the last ten months looking at ways Georgia can serve children and families through a two-generation approach.  The 2Gen Leadership Academy is sponsored by the Georgia Children's Cabinet.  Joining us from DECAL to talk about their experience from the Academy is Rebecca Ellis, Director of Practice and Support Services; Megan Fickes is Early Head Start Partnership Director; and Rob O'Callaghan is Senior Research Analyst in the Quality Initiatives and Partnerships Division.Support the show

When Georgia’s Childcare and Parent Services (CAPS) Program moved from DFCS to DECAL, part of the restructuring was the addition of a Family Support component, working alongside Program Administration and Scholarship Administration. The new CAPS Program was charged with working with families to help them achieve self-sufficiency, beyond the need for assistance in paying for child care. Interview with Gregg Croteau, Chief Executive Officer, and Keena Phal, Street Worker, of UTEC. Founded in 1999, UTEC helps formerly incarcerated and gang involved young adults (ages 17-25) from the communities of Lowell, Lawrence and Haverhill overcome past challenges and pursue education and career opportunities. Through UTEC’s social enterprises — Mattress Recycling, Woodworking, and Food Services — these young adults gain the work and life skills critical for long-tern success. And UTEC’s recently launched 2Gen program provides licensed early childcare to children of participants. The long-term recidivism rate of UTEC’s young adults averages less than 15%, compared with a statewide average of more than 50%. And about 80% of UTEC participants are still employed two years after leaving the program. In this interview, Gregg and Keena discuss UTEC’s unique full service model, the power and importance of their relationships with the young adults they serve, how they measure success, and what keeps them motivated and committed to UTEC and its mission over time.
