TRUTH INTERRUPTED | Public Health Insider Speaks Out About the War on Nicotine

In public health, truth is supposed to be sacred. For decades, tobacco control defined and promoted the truth about combustible tobacco: cigarettes kill, nicotine is addictive, and the only path forward is to quit or die. But that truth, once necessary and urgent, has hardened into dogma. In this revealing episode of RegWatch, Dr. Jeff Willett, a 25-year tobacco control veteran and former senior leader at the American Heart Association and Truth Initiative, confronts what he calls “the dangerous game” being played by some in the tobacco control movement: conflating nicotine with the deadly harms of smoking. Now serving as Vice President of Strategic Engagement at Global Action to End Smoking, Willett speaks candidly about tobacco control's unwillingness to recognize the continuum of risk. He tackles head-on the misinformation swirling around safer nicotine products and exposes how tobacco Master Settlement Agreement funds are being diverted—from the critical work to end smoking—into state general coffers. Are governments dependent on tobacco revenue? Find out! Before I introduce you to our special guest expert today, I want to take a moment to share some context I think will tee up today's topic — and why we wanted to have this conversation. Right now, 70% of business leaders rank “showing care” as a top priority — but many of them struggle with how to express “care” effectively.   If you're looking for strategies to make your agency an easy yes for your right-fit prospects — or how to get onto their radar in the first place — crafting a plan to build strategic engagement should be a key part of your mix. That's why we're excited to have Jamie Shibley, CEO of The Expressory, back for this encore interview. We unpack the research findings, explore key insights — and most importantly map out some action steps you can take and apply right away. I also invited Hannah Roth, our Director of Strategy and resident mad scientist here at Predictive, to join in the conversation. Hannah works in the trenches every day alongside our clients, helping them sell more of what they do. If you take and apply the insights Jamie shares with us, you will absolutely help your right-fit prospects feel the care you want them to feel, deepen relationships — and sell more of what you do in the process. What you will learn in this episode:  Why only 34% of companies craft a documented engagement strategy — and how you can easily outshine the competition The key elements of a successful engagement strategy How to implement a documented engagement strategy Steps to shift from a transactional mindset to a relational one The synergy between personal storytelling and intentional gifting Real-world examples of how businesses use strategic engagement to fuel growth Resources: Website: https://www.theexpressory.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-shibley-76a3402/

The eye care support pathway is a framework developed by the RNIB and partners from across the sight loss sector. It aims to support people through the various stages of sight loss by helping them to understand those stages and signposting them to sources of assistance to navigate through each one. Rob Cooper, Director of Strategic Engagement at RNIB joins us to explain how the process will work, and Dr Peter Hampson, Clinical and Policy Director at the Association of Optometrists gives us an eye care professional's view. Worried listeners have contacted In Touch with concerns that sighted support to enable guide dogs to go free running could be withdrawn. We speak to Mark Sanderson, Director of Skills, Information and Support at Guide Dogs to clarify the situation. We may be politically divided, but when it comes to healthcare there is actually a lot we agree on as a nation. We want healthcare that is affordable. We want a healthcare system that is easy to understand and navigate. We want to know we will receive good care when we need it most. These insights are something our guest Natalie Davis takes to heart in her work at United States of Care. She and her team are fighting hard to help create a more dependable healthcare system for diverse and underserved Americans. We discuss:Why we should never use the term “value-based care” ever again.Braidwood vs. Becerra: The court case that may eliminate free preventive services for half of all Americans. The double whammy of US healthcare: system failures and personal shame. How to nurture listening and belonging on a team.Natalie says before you start listening, you need to consider who is being failed by the healthcare system and prioritize hearing their stories:“If we look at something like maternal health – which is a work that we're doing right now – if you look at the data, it is women of color, especially Black women who are left behind and facing a real failure of our system, which is causing morbidity and mortality. And so, for our organization, we are listening loudly to Black women and we are talking to people in communit[ies], we are talking in focus groups to really make sure we understand those issues. Because, if the people who are not served by this healthcare system are listened to and then served it will make the healthcare system function better for all of us.”Relevant LinksUnited States of Care's websiteUnited Solutions for CarePatient-First Care (a.k.a. China's burgeoning relationship with the African continent has been characterized by significant economic investment, trade, and infrastructure development, with China emerging as Africa's largest trading partner and a major player in the continent's evolving economic landscape. In recent years, we have seen an influx of Chinese involvement in African industries ranging from mining and construction to manufacturing and retail. This has been accompanied by an ambitious drive to develop Africa's infrastructure with projects that span roads, railways, ports, airports, and telecommunications networks. But the ties between China and Africa extend far beyond economics. We're witnessing a dynamic cultural exchange, burgeoning diplomatic activities, and even aid and military support. However, these activities have not been without controversy, igniting debates over so-called debt-trap diplomacy and resource exploitation.Joshua Eisenman is an Associate Professor of Politics in the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame.
