I stared open-mouthed in disbelief at the cat crossing the neighborhood street in front of my new house in Silver Bay, MN (I'll be moving up full time in 2027). Trotting purposefully on long legs, with a body almost three feet long, this was no housecat. "Bobcat!" I exclaimed, eyeing the black tip on their short tail and dark blotches on gray-brown fur. Bobcats are common in Northern Wisconsin where I've been living for the past 15 years, and are often spotted around homes and roads, so that was the most likely identification my startled brain could find.  But as the cat climbed up the pile of dirty snow on the curb and into my neighbor's yard, the size of their huge, furry feet came into full view. That, along with long black ear tufts visible against the white, confirmed their identity: Canada lynx.

Jemand, der sich intensiv damit auseinandersetzt, ist Stefan Berger. Der Content Creator aus Dormagen hat sich in seinem Hobbykeller ein PCVR-Nerdhöhle gebaut, aus dem er seine beiden YouTube-Kanäle befüllt. Er nimmt uns mit in seinen PCVR-Werdegang und hilft uns zu verstehen, was PCVR eigentlich ist und warum die Grenzen schwammiger sind, als ich es erst mal erwartet hätte. Family members don’t always stay close together – they can be separated by thousands of miles. But one member of the Milky Way Galaxy’s family takes the separation to extremes. It’s 300,000 light-years from the center of the galaxy – one of the most distant residents of the Milky Way yet seen. NGC 2419 is a globular cluster – a group of about a million stars. They form a dense ball a few hundred light-years across. Any star near the middle of the cluster would have thousands of neighbors within a few light-years. Compare that to our own neighborhood – only three stars reside less than five light-years from the Sun. NGC 2419 is one of the Milky Way’s oldest family members. The cluster was born more than 12 billion years ago – not long after the galaxy itself. All of its big, bright stars burned out long ago. So almost all of the remaining stars are much less massive than the Sun. The cluster follows a highly stretched-out orbit around the center of the Milky Way. That’s led to suggestions that it was born elsewhere, then captured by the Milky Way. But there’s no confirmation of that idea. So NGC 2419 is still considered a far-away relative of the rest of the Milky Way. The cluster is in the uber-faint constellation Lynx, which is in the east-northeast at nightfall. Alpha Lyncis is only about a third of the age of the Sun. Yet the star has already zoomed through the prime phase of life. Now, it’s nearing the end of its life. And it’s letting us know about it – it’s the brightest star of the constellation Lynx. That’s not necessarily saying much. Lynx is a large constellation, but it’s faint – only a few of its stars are bright enough to see from light-polluted cities or suburbs. In fact, the astronomer who created it, in the 1600s, called it “Lynx” because you needed the eyes of one to see it. Alpha Lyncis is classified as a red giant. It’s about half-again the mass of the Sun. Heavier stars age more quickly. Such a star “burns” through the original hydrogen in its core in a hurry. As the core adjusts to the change, the star’s outer layers puff up. Today, Alpha Lyncis is more than 50 times the diameter of the Sun. As it got bigger, the star got cooler and redder – making it a red giant. Puffing up also made the star hundreds of times brighter than the Sun. So Alpha Lyncis is visible – faintly – even though it’s a little more than 200 light-years away. That makes it one of the few stars in this faint constellation that you don’t need the eyes of a lynx to see. Lynx is well up in the east-northeast at nightfall. It’s about half way between the Big Dipper and the twins of Gemini. But you need nice, dark skies to see much. More about the constellation tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

Tracey had a prolonged and close view of a black panther outside her car at a forest edge in Gloucestershire in 2001. Two years later she was able to compare the cat with a black leopardess at Heythrop private zoo in the Cotswolds. Tracey recounts other big cat reports from family and friends, including from her sister who was a sceptic until seeing a black panther in the same general area, and from friends who were confronted by a puma on a cycleway near Stroud.Tracey has had two puma encounters herself. The first on a mountain path when trekking in Patagonia, and then in October 2025, when driving on the edge of Cirencester. Rick recalls past big cat sightings in precisely the same area of Cirencester, unknown to Tracey.  In a final segment we play voice messages from Craig in Herefordshire as he follows up ep129 when he reported a puma on one of his trail cams. In December Craig was charged by a puma just meters from that camera and he's twice seen watching eye shine at close range. Dr. Jonny Hanson's recent book, Living with Lynx: Sharing Landscapes with Big Cats, Wolves, and Bears, examines the contentious topic of reintroducing large carnivores to the islands of Britain and Ireland. Dr. Hanson's work explores conservation of apex predators and our relationship with these animals through the lens of social science, psychology, and history. In addition, he draws upon his experiences working with snow leopard conservationists in Nepal and around the globe. His new documentary, Snow Leopard Trail, is available at film festivals now. Lauren Groff reads her story “Mother of Men” from the November 10, 2025, issue of the magazine. Groff's work of fiction include the novels “Fates and Furies” and “Matrix,” both of which were finalists for the National Book Award, and “The Vaster Wilds,” which was published in 2023.
